A Look At How Weak Bucs’ Receiving Corps Is

March 20th, 2010

Great guy Sammie Stroughter is the Bucs' leading receiver returning from last season. But his numbers place him 82nd in total catches for wide receivers in 2009.

Not sure how many people heard Joe this morning on the air with his good friend Justin Pawlowski, of WDAE-AM 620, but Joe dropped something on Justin and his listening audience — aside from a quality Maxim magazine mention — that Joe thought he’d share for those who didn’t hear Justin’s show.

Of the receivers currently on the Bucs roster, the top receiver was rookie Sammie Stroughter who hauled in 31 passes, which averages out to less than two a game.

Per NFL.com, that number is tied with five other receivers for No. 130th in the NFL — 130!!!

Take away all the tight ends and running backs on that list and Stroughter ranked 82nd in the league among wide receivers in total catches.

To be fair, the Bucs leading receiver was Kellen Winslow who caught 77 passes.

Still, what does that say for the Bucs that not only is your leading receiver a tight end, but he caught over twice as many passes as the top wide receiver on the roster?

This is simply frightening to Joe.

As presently constituted, worst wide receiver corp in bucs history, which says a lot.

Of course it will be fixed with a couple of rookies and scrub FA’s.

  2. Radio Mushmouth Says:

Have we already forgotten , we have great Reggie Brown .

    Problem solved.

  3. Aldo Says:

well in defense of sammie, he could ranks better IF radio let him plays like a number 2 receiver!!!!

  4. JDouble Says:

Sammie dropped two passes and caught the 31 thrown to him. He averaged 11 yards per catch. I think those are the stats that matter. The rest is misleading since he was used as a #3 or #4 reciever last year and didn’t have many chances.

I think Winlsow, Stroughter, and a good 2nd round rookie WR like THomas, D. Williams, or Tate would actually be alot better than most people think. I guess time will tell.

  5. Vince Says:

    Pathetic

  6. Vince Says:

Joe, Sammie — a rookie — played: (a) on an evolving offense, (b) with three QBs (two who don’t start on any other team in the league and the other a 21 year old rookie), (c) behind several players for much of the season, and, (d) two games less than a full seaason due to a foot injury. Hardly a meaningful comparison.

  7. Finerdetailz Says:

And to think Dominik thought he a good reason for getting rid of Antonio Bryant.

  8. Mike J Says:

I opined long about October that Sammie might be a #2 WR. Brown is a better pick-up than people around here think, & as I have said, Bradley will contribute. Draft Shipley rd. 3, & take a flier on Danario Alexander rd. 6, & you have a decent receiving corps.
The roster is not yet set for Opening Day.

  9. Marc Says:

I would hate to bust everybodys negative bubble, but the draft is coming up april 22nd and if we dont get 1 WR in the first two rounds we will get 2. AB was a tough loss but life goes on. Stovall, who is a realativley new player, has been busting his ass since jan 3. Brown may break out due to a change of scenery. Freeman has been busting his ass as well. Im not saying Brown and Stovall are superstars, or even top tier players, but I garuntee if one of them starts they will break the top 100 WRs next year.

Its funny when people try to pass judgement on a team based on stats from a previous season, the league is forever changing. Football is a sport, not a video game. If histroy has taught us anything, a team that may look one way one paper will be turning heads by the end of the season. I believe the hard work our team puts in this off season will transition on the field, I know someone will quote me in a while an call me stupid, but just watch. People say it will be a miracle if we win 4-5 games, Just watch.

  10. Marc Says:

**they wont just break they wil blow past the top 100

  11. RahDomDaBest Says:

There are 32 teams in the NFL… Theoretically speaking, your # 1 should be in the top 32…. If not, then you already are losing in the league.

With 2 WRs that’s top 64. And with 3 wide, it should be 3 in the top 96.

To not have 1 in the top 130 is pretty aweful… And it shows how terrible your QB is. Josh INT Freeman who also can’t convert on 3rd down.

Guess what, Jason Campbell and Jamarcus Russle were good prospects too.

  12. Eric Says:

The Tuskers have Frank “yo” Murphy and Chas Gessner on their roster.

    Not bad.

  13. TJ Tillman Says:

Winslow is solid ,straughter is good but he has had problems of injury problems, stovall is inconsitent and if he is not blocking Clayton is useless. Last thing tired of people trashing Bryant about causin INT’s. He made plenty of plays too look at the First Falcons game the Panters catch on the sideline, bottom line Freeman looked good sometimes but hten ah I dont know 18 int’s in 9 games is alot

  14. Eric S Says:

Right now the Bucs don’t have a #1 or a #2 receiver. That is a serious problem. Sammie is a nice player, but his 10.8 yards per catch is horrible in that few of catches. He was 90th among qualifiers with that average, so that isn’t very good. Reggie Brown is a castoff. Are the Bucs trying to catch lightning in a bottle like they did with AB with Brown? Brown was so good that the Eagles drafted 2 receivers early in the last couple of drafts. So we are counting on this guy?

Mark Bradley is useless, so I am not going to count on him at all. He was drafted by the Bears of all teams and he couldn’t stick around with them. The Bears!! I don’t know what to think of Stovall. This is his fifth year. He has 44 catches in 4 years. That really isn’t productive.

So right now we have a castoff, an underachiever, a receiver who is known more for blocking, a useless guy and 2nd year guy. Does that sound like a great receiving corps? And now the Bucs are counting on a rookie or two being the #2 receiver or even the #1 receiver. Yeah that is going to turn out well.

How in the world can anyone see this receiving corps as it is constituted being anything but substandard? This corps could make for a good sitcom. Call it the Crappy Ones. Thank god we have Kellen Winslow Jr.

  15. Eric Says:

I think it is a mistake to assume the bucs are going to draft a receiver with one of their first four pics in the draft.

I think that Dom/rah are prepared to go into the season with Sammie and Clayton as number 1 and 2 wideouts plus reggie brown and stovall.

Although that may qualify for Ripley’s believe it or not, I will not be shocked if they don’t adress receiver until the later rounds of the draft, if at all.

  16. Mike J Says:

I wonder what all the nattering nabobs about Brown & Bradley (if he is mentioned at all) were saying about the acquisition of Antonio Bryant two years ago?? He was brought in off the street.

  17. Radio Mushmouth Says:

We need Golden Tate. He is the most polished of the projects , and is most likely to be able to contribute immediately.

After he ran a 4.4 though he has been steady climbing and may not even last until the 2nd round.

  18. Finerdetailz Says:

Yes Antonio was brought in from the streets but the guy had talent. That could have been a credit to Dominik in finding such a guy although not sure how much credit Dominik deserves. So the Bucs find an awesome talent and just because we found him ‘on the streets’ then we can just get rid of him. This makes Dominik look as foolish as last years mastermind approach of changing the schemes on both sides of the ball. I know this is beating a dead horse but when are people like dumbass duemig going to wake up and hold this organization accountable for it’s actions.
And Joe what gives with u calling this guy the dean? I do believe most find this guy to be ridiculous when it comes to covering people the Big Dog likes. Do you agree with him that if the Bucs win only 3 games again this regime should still be retained?

  19. Louie Says:

@Mike J, when AB was brought in the Bucs already had proven receivers, so it wasn’t critical that he develop into a star. That’s be big difference between then and now.

Assuming Sammy is going to be a starter this year is a big assumption. He could develop into a starting, but he could just as easily have a sophomore slump. They let both AB and Clark (who was developing nicely) go “hoping” the new guys will replace them. Should an NFL team go into a season “hoping” your WR’s work out with a young QB??? Sounds like Russian Roulette to me.

  20. Eric Says:

Counting on bringing in another guy off the streets, and having him perform like Antonio Bryant did, is akin to buying a lottery ticket to pay your next months mortgage.

Plus, i think I have read or heard that Dominik did not want to sign Bryant to begin with.

I state the obvious that when Bryant had his awesome season he was coached by Jon Gruden, not the Dream. Huge difference, just ask Antonio.

Get it through your heads, Raheem the Dream the sequel isn’t going to be a bit better than the original. The disaster begins again in september. Duemig imay be the Dean, but is also the village idiot.

  21. Eric S Says:

I think I have read it all. Comparing Mark Bradley to AB? Wow. Bradley never cracked 400 yards in receiving with 2 teams that desperately need quality receivers (Chi, KC). If Brown somehow becomes a quality #2, then I will be a little surprised. If people think Brown will become the #1, I just don’t see it. A lot of ifs with this team. It didn’t have to be this way.

  22. Bucs1Fan Says:

I think we’ll be fine. Winslow throughout his career has been the leading receiver on the every team he’s played with. We just need to get the defense solid again, and give Josh sometime to get comfortable.

  23. TJ Tillman Says:

Agree with Radio. @ Bucs1fan Winslow is also a knee injury away from his carrer being in jepeorday. We need to remeber The Bucs were hurt alot I mean alot last year faine Clayton oops he does not count Bryant Phillips Ward Smith Wilkerson stroughter

  24. Eric Says:

    @Bucs1Fan

Not sure where your getting the stats, but Winslow never led the Browns in receiving, that was Braylon Edwards.

Without a legit number one, he will be taken out of the game, along with our vaunted running attack.

  25. Eric S Says:

Winslow led the Browns in receiving in 2006 and 2007.
    2006-Winslow-89, Edwards-61
    2007-Winslow-82, Edward-80
