How Will The First Three Picks Shake Out?

Michael Lombardi of the NFL Network believes the Bucs have their sights on Tennessee safety Eric Berry as a cornerback.

It’s only Feb. 13. Football fans who don’t have the NFL Network are worried about roses and chocolates and utter nonsense like that rather than growing a pair and getting the NFL Network.

Joe is a man. So he watched Michael Lombardi and Jason La Canfora of the NFL Network last night dissect the first five picks in the NFL draft and what the teams holding those picks are likely to do.

La Canfora made some interesting observations: This is the last year that high first round picks will demand a king’s ransom in salary and bonuses. After this season, there will very likely be a rookie salary cap. As a result, teams may be reluctant to trade up, waiting to make draft day moves when there is a rookie salary cap.

Lombardi suggested that the Bucs not only would likely draft Tennessee safety Eric Berry, but that Berry will be a cornerback in the NFL, not a safety.

Both La Canfora and Lombardi believe defensive tackles Gerald McCoy and manbeast Ndamukong Suh will both be gone when the Bucs pick, unless the Lambs trade their first overall pick.

As a result, the duo believe Bucs general manager Mark Dominik will feverishly work the phones, desperately trying to trade down.

(Reread Joe’s third paragraph.)

Those are just some of the interesting observations the two made about the Bucs needs.

Roses and chocolates? Pffttt! Joe’s got Caybrew on the mind.

I’d think fiscal thoughts might make some teams want to trade for future picks if a salary cap for rookies will be in place. I’m dubious about this, though, as it would require a new CBA by the 2011 draft, which isn’t looking likely.
The trade down concept might work if teams decide Clausen &/or Bradford is a franchise QB, which also seems unlikely, but who knew at this time last year that Stafford & Sanchez would go so high??

Let’s hope the bucs don’t draft berry they need d-tackles and d-ends and widerecievers and runingbacks and offensive tackles and gaurds and cornerbacks and then safty!

  3. zech Says:

They need mccoy or suh and if they can’t get either of them then trade down and pick up more picks cuz if we don’t address these areas of need then ere gonna sux big time!

  4. CreamsiclePasties Says:

    A corner at 3 overall?

I can’t see it…..not that Berry couldn’t make the move and be successful….we just don’t need a corner as bad as we need a safety.

If that’s the consensus…that the kids a corner at the next level…..then we need to go Okung.

  5. zech Says:

I say no to okung we need d-tackles and d-ends and linebackers and widerecievers more than we need an offensive tackle we need more picks to address the needs we have!

  6. RustyRhino Says:

If we cant get Shu or McCoy then try to drop down, then get this S/CB Berry there not at # 3 if we can’t drop down get a Tackle or LB or DE. For years we had top 10 picks and we did not pick wisely. Time to change the approach, no disrespect to Mr. Berry he will be a Player in the NFL i just don’t think he is worthy of top 5 picks in the draft. As there are always players who are picked in the first round who don’t pan out in the NFL, do you think we can afford to waste our pick? I personally don’t think we can afford to get a player we would want to change positions (equals 1 lost year) with our first round pick.
    Maybe it is just me.?

    re: zech

In part I agree with you….but at 3 overall there are very few guys or positions worthy of the $$$ the 3 pick is going to get. My opinion: there are very few rookies worth that money….QB (not happening) and in the trenches….Berry’s an unbelievable talent, so I can see the justification there if he’s playing safety.

I also agree that we need upgrades at all 3 levels of the defense…..but this is an extremely deep draft at those positions. Let’s say we grab Dan Williams DT from UT in the second, Eric Norwood OLB/DE from South Carolina with the second 2nd round pick, and Kam Chancellor S from VT in the third or fourth……

Add Okung with the first pick and maybe Dexter McCluster or Jordan Shipley with a second or third round pick and all of a sudden we’ve added a stud on oline, playmaker for Freeman, and a starter (potentially) at all 3 levels on D…….

This draft doesn’t end after the 3rd overall pick for Bucs fans…..

  8. CreamsiclePasties Says:

Sorry, my last post wasn’t worded right…..look, I’m not saying I’m completely sold on Okung, but I would be pretty happy if we went

    1-Okung
    2a- Dan Williams
    2b- Eric Norwood
    3- Jordan Shipley
    4- Kam Chancellor

  9. Cody Says:

I coud def. live with that draft, Creamsicle.

  10. zech Says:

The bucs won’t draft okung because he will be on the bench because we have donald penn and jermy trueblood so why would we okung and draften berry would be a mistake cuz he takes a lot of plays off and he gets beat alott trust me I watch every game that he played in and I’m not sold at all on him! Just watch his combine and tell me if his stock drops!

  11. zech Says:

    1-McCoy/suh
    2-de/wr
    3-lb or rb
    4-rb or cb
    5-cb
    6-s

  12. Eric Says:

all irrelevant, cause nobody to coach em up………………….

  13. zechariah Says:

i wanna see the bucs have a wining season behind raheem morris do i see that happening is to be determined on how well raheem drafts and how well he coaches them up that being said berry at 3 would be a mistake because he shows up for a couple games and then the rest of the time hes invisible and thats y i say if we cant move up to get suh and or we cant get mccoy then we should trade down cuz then with more picks we can make trades if we need too or we can position our self to go after whatever player is our our board at that time!

  14. JOSH P Says:

why are people so against drafting Berry at #3? who cares about the position in front of his name and the fact that its a top 5 pick.. if Ed Reed was in the draft there wouldn’t be a problem taking him number 3, or Palamlau, or Bob Sanders, or what about Revis??? sure all those names are proven but isn’t drafting Berry at #3 just as big of a gamble as drafting Suh or McCoy?? last i checked there are plenty of D-linemen who turned out to be bust. Suh, McCoy, and Berry are probably the 3 most talented players in the draft so i say which everone is there at 3 when its our time time to pick take him!!!

  15. zech Says:

I say if berry there at 3 and mccoy and suh r gone then we need to trade down and get more picks and I really don’t think berry will impress scouts I could be wrong its just I watch to much of him on tv and if I’m a owner I would be against pickin him at 3 ! Just watch the combine that if he goes. I just think he will hurt his chances to go top 5 even top 10

  16. Greg Says:

Zech, I wouldn’t count on having both Penn and Trueblood back next year, and definitely wouldn’t count on Trueblood fixing his mental/anger lapses.

  17. Cody Says:

Zech, Okung would easily beat out both Penn and Trueblood. Regarding Eric Berry, he’ll probably show up at the Combine and run in the 4.3’s and all the scouts will be drooling. Flip a coin with Okung and Berry, either way we’re getting a starter out of that pick. The bigger questions for me is how the rest of the draft is going to play out. Those are the picks that are going to make or break this rebuilding plan.

  18. zech Says:

Either we get a d-tackle or we trade the pick and get more picks cuz more picks means more we can do to help the defense and our offense . Okung/suh/mccoy/bryant I would be madd at!!

  19. zech Says:

I would still take a wait and see on berry until after the combine I don’t see berry runinng a 4.3 more like 4.5 and 4.6. And plus I don’t see berry startinig this year he would probably play behind barber but like I said its all about how he works out at the combine that we should go D-Tackle first and or Ot and or trade down and land a linebacker or widereciever!

  20. JOSH P Says:

Zech, Berry would start this year becuae he would be playing Safety not corner which is Barbers position. and Berry sure as hell isn’t going to sit the bench behind The Goat!!!

  21. zech Says:

Raheem won’t start berry cuz raheem knows he would get burned everytime! I’m sayn don’t be suprised if mccoy and suh r gone to see the bucs trade out of the pick!!

  22. zech Says:

Love to see either okung if we can’t get those d-tackles or dez bryant or mcclain!

  23. JOSH P Says:

if Raheem would start Sabby he would start Berry for sure!!!! why wouldn’t he?? it would be and upgrade at the position….. i do not want a WR in the first round..if they are going to trade down and pick up some more picks they still need to go D in the first.. wait till the 2nd to grab a WR…the gap between talented WR is a lot smaller than the gap between top notch D-lineman…WR’s are a dime a dozen these days.

  24. zech Says:

We need recievers that can catch the ball not drop them and from my understanding recievers in the 2nd round have more drops. I wouldn’t mind trading down if mccoy or suh r gone we need more picks and I wouldn’t mind okung or dunlap oranother d-end or even dan williams from tennessee! With more picks then more trades could come to make the bucs better!

  25. JOSH P Says:

i don’t really mind trading down either i just don’t want to see them trade down and then grab a reciever. just like you said there is dunlap, williams, price, pierre-paul……i just don’t feel a reciever in the first round is a solid pick.. “my understanding recievers in the 2nd round have more drops” where in the world did you get that stat from???this draft needs to be Defense heavey, 6 to 7 of the 10 picks need to be on D, we need D-line, we need Linebackers, and we need Secondary!!!! grab a WR with one of the 2nd and maybe a OL and RB with between the 4th and 5th rounds

  26. zech Says:

We need a 4 to 5 of the players be on defense. Raheem won’t spend the top 5 or 6 picks all on defense I think he would mix it up because u gotta get freemen protection and recievers and I can see him pick a runingback late 2rd to third round and a reciever 2rd or thru trade !
