Next QB Or Receivers Coach Could Be Berbenich

January 21st, 2010

Tim Berbenich

With big names like Keenan McCardell and Ike Hilliard mentioned as candidates for the Bucs wide receivers coach vacancy, the St. Pete Times reported yesterday that Tim Berbenich may have a leg up on the job.

Who?

Joe was wondering that, too. Who the hell is Tim Berbenich?

Well, Joe has never met Berbenich. But he was the Bucs’ assistant wide receivers coach in 2009, assistant running backs coach in 2008, and he spent the previous eight years as an intern, an offensive assistant, and/or a quality control coach with the Bucs and Jets.

Berbenich is 30 years old.

His NFL career followed an unremarkable four-year stint as a wide receiver at tiny Division III Hamilton College, which is tucked in a post-Revolutionary War village in upstate New York. Berbenich seems to like the New York Mets and the Dave Matthews Band, per his Facebook page, and lives in Tampa with his wife and newborn son.

Learning all this, Joe couldn’t stop wondering how young Berbenich would be qualified to take over as the Bucs wide receivers coach.

How could a 30-year-old former Division III receiver sucessfully mentor Anquan Boldin (wishful thinking), Antonio Bryant and Michael Clayton, and be taken seriously?

Perhaps Berbenich is a super coaching guru yet to be unleashed? Maybe he’s got family connections in the NFL? Does he have compromising photos of Raheem The Dream?

From what Joe has learned, it seems Berbenich is a very serious up-and-comer in the coaching ranks, despite not having family in the business or an NFL player resume. Simply, he’s put in the work.

Studied the QB position under Gruden, Hackett and Olson

Berbenich was kind enough to tell JoeBucsFan.com this morning that he has great interest in becoming the Bucs quarterbacks coach.

Having studied daily for years under quarterback mavens Paul Hackett (in New York and Tampa) Jon Gruden and Greg Olson, Berbenich feels he’s extremely qualified to take on the role of Josh Freeman’s taskmaster.

A source at One Buc Palace also tells Joe that Berbenich is a playbook wizard with extreme attention to detail who has tremendous respect throughout the organization from top to bottom.

Joe also went looking for more on Berbenich and turned to one of his coaches at Hamilton College, Paul Adey, a 25-year veteran of the school who has spent a lifetime in football.

An intense, effective communicator

Joe was pleased to learn that Adey remembered Berbenich.

“Believe me, I’ve been around thousands of kids in my years, he’s one of the one’s you remember,” Adey said. “He was a good athlete, but he certainly wasn’t our best receiver. Timmy was one of those kids who worked really hard to be as good as he could possibly be. He was a real filmroom kid, willing to put the time in to become a better athlete.

“Hamilton is a very academic school. Kids come here to be doctors and lawyers, not football coaches. But Timmy went to intern with the Jets in his junior year, I believe, and he just loved the atmosphere there. And the Jets had him doing stupid jobs, too.”

Adey explained that through his long career, via various camps and NFL connections, he has worked alongside many NFL coaches, including spending a week with Norv Turner’s Redskins in the 1990’s. Having been around those coaches, Adey said he is sure Berbenich has what it takes to be a Bucs position coach.

“He’s certainly not going to stand in front of you and scare the shit out of you,” Adey said. “But it’s the effort he puts in to making sure you know what’s going on.

“He was never afraid to put the time in to make sure teammates and coaches understood the play. I always saw an intensity in the kid. It’s this school. Everybody here is really smart. These kids learn so well how to get their point across and to communicate. Timmy really showed that quality, how to communicate, how to present himself at the highest level. The quality Timmy had in him here was that.

“I’ve been around a lot of NFL coaches. The good ones convey their message flawlessly. Timmy has that ability.”

Now Joe knows a guy doesn’t have to have been a good player to be a great coach. There are countless examples across the NFL and other sports.

Given Berbenich’s history with the Bucs, it’s obvious he’s going to move up — or move on at some point.

Bucs fans should have some answers next week.

The main thing he has going for him though may be the fact that he would probably come cheap. Besides, who cares if he doesn’t have experience? Our head coach didn’t. The Bucs will give anyone a shot, experience not necessary. It doesn’t matter in the new age of Buc Ball.

  2. JDouble Says:

I’m not sold on Timmy. He doesn’t seem like a guy that young recievers are going to take seriously, and he sure as shit isn’t the QB coach for Freeman.

  3. Louie Says:

Berbenich will get the job because he’s CHEAP. They’d offer the job to the janitor if they hadn’t already laid him off. …”Hey Morris, get over here and mop up this coffee spill!”

  4. JJ Says:

Tough crowd. You don’t even know the guy. No reason to think he sucks out loud.

  5. nick Says:

JJ, dont you know JDouble knows him and has seen his work all across the league. I mean the fact that JDouble is not sold on him should tell you something. Maybe he should re-interview with JDouble (sarcasm, all of it)

  6. D-money Says:

I love how all of the praise and kudos from people who actually know football is ignored and everyone who posts on here, who i’m assuming have never been coaches or executives in the NFL, decide that he’s a bum and can’t possibly be any good.

Its a postion coach people, not the head coach. You’re not going to go out and get an experienced guy for that job because A) if they are good the team they are with will want to keep them. B) if they are really good teams will be looking for them to fill coordinator jobs.

Seems to me he has more coaching experience than Ike or Keenan, Just because those guys were good recievers doesn’t mean they will be able to teach that to other guys.

  7. D-money Says:

    JJ,
Don’t you know the rules of posting on JBF.com.?

    1. Everything the Glazers do is because they are broke.
    2. Everything Raheem Morris does is wrong and he is the worst coach of all time.
    3. Bill Cowher is God’s gift o the NFL.
    4. The Glazers are Broke.
    5. Mark Dominik is an Idiot. No matter who he signs or what trades he makes (he’s only doing it to make it seem like the Glazers aren’t broke.)

Keep your post’s related to these topics and you’ll fit right in.

  8. Mr. Lucky Says:

    D-money – Hey I agree with you on points 1 thru 4.

Have to disagree with #5 as Dumyinik actually looked smart in the Gaines Adam trade – ESPECIALLY now. 😉

You’re right Joe. I mean look how OLD this guy is!!! Can Tim even do a chest bump with these players?

I thought the Glazers were going for a YOUTH movement. I mean a 30-year old WR coach? What’s wrong with the Glazers? Couldn’t they find anyone coming out of college to take the position?

  10. B From O-Town Says:

The Glazers do not care about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers enough to spend money. They are flat broke. It may be a matter of time before the NFL starts asking questions about the Glazer’s being fit enough to own the team… and this is solely based on their behaviors of cutting player and coach costs at an astounding rate…. not rumor based.

The Glazer’s plan is different from Raheem’s. But Raheem is taking advantage of the opportunity and trying to make the est of it. In the end, Raheem will gain some pretty good experience from this debacle… even when he his released… he can’t be so delusional to not know this is an interim position he is holding… that’s why he is making the best of it. Everytime he steps to the podium, he is interviewing for his next NFL gig. Only problem is, he seriously needs to work on his communication skills… and maybe establish a better grasp of the English language. Afterall, in the NFL, to be a head coach, you SHOULD be a dynamite communicator with the team, the stakeholders, the fans and the media. You SHOULD be in the top 32 as there are only 32 head coaches. Ask yourself, is Raheem one of the top 32 minds in the NFL?

  11. Jake Says:

D-money you can bury your head in the sand all you like but the proof is in the pudding…and thats 3-13 pudding and may only improve to 5 or 6 win pudding this year because of the weaker schedule. Don’t listen to what the Glazers say, but look at what they do. If you look at what they do, every single decision they make at the core of it is based on reducing the expenditure of money. I.E. replace your high profile coach with a low profile coach who is already on your payroll and pay him less than market value for a head coach. Even though you still have to pay Gruden you can save on not having to succumb to Grudens demands for high priced free agents which is a net savings. Replace your GM with an inexperienced GM that is already on your payroll and pay him below market value. Sell your fans that the “plan” requires building through the draft to justify spending less money on more expensive veteran free agents to complement your draft picks. What other successful franchise operates on a shoestring like this one and trys to sell its fans that the only way to succeed is to stock your roster with inexperienced and unproven talent. None. Only a damn fool would ignore whats going on with the Glazers financially and believe that all their actions or inactions the past few years have been in the best interest of the team and not motivated by their tenuous financial situation.

  12. JDouble Says:

I never claimed to know everything or even know this guy. All I’m saying is why would we let Mann go, and then expect his underling to be better at coaching recievers than he was?

As far as a QB coach. This is a 30 year old guy that has been an underling for RBs and WRs….that’s it. Can you seriously say you think this is the guy we want to coach our young franchise QB? Seriously?

Hate on me all you want, but I think we have enough young inexperienced coaches on our staff. This guy could be the next Bill Parcells, but I hardly think this is the time to take another shot on another young unproven guy.

  13. JDouble Says:

Also, I really don’t think this has anything to do with money. Wether they sign this no name or the best QB coach available, your talking a difference in the tens of thousands of dollars. That’s a drop in the bucket in terms of an NFL franchise.

  14. jlynch1340 Says:

Why do you think the Glazers are broke??? They skium cash out of Man U administration fees…… Millions of dollars. They aren’t broke they are scummbags hiding money. They want their soccer player to buy bonds to help with debt, deferring salary to help pay bills. They are very clever money miser scumbags

  15. d-money Says:

    Jake,

blah blah blah….it wouldn’t matter if the Glazers raised Vince Lombardi from the dead and hired them as the new coach guys like you would find a way to bitch about it.

  16. Jake Says:

D-money, I spend $2500 on season tickets each year and have bought season tickets continously since 1986. I think I have a right to bitch when I see the owners putting crap on the field and running the team into the ground. They piss all over the fans and then try to convince them its raining. The only thing that pisses me off more than the Glazers right now are jackass fans like yourself that cant see the forest through the trees.

  17. tnew Says:

Hey, lets make him head coach

  18. George C. Costanza Says:

That was an awesome, informative post, Joe, that shed light on someone we should keep an eye on. Thanks for the effort.

  19. JOSH P Says:

QUESTION???? WHAT EXACTLY DOES A WR’S COACH DO??? (IN DETAIL PLEASE)

  20. d-money Says:

    Jake,

Stop buying tickets if you don’t like it. Nobody is forcing you to do it.

And like it or not you are not qualified to judge whether or not this guy is a good coach. I highly doubt that a recievers coaches salary is going to break the Glazers bank account. So no this doesn’t have to do with money. It has to do with giving a guy who has apparently impressed everyone he has come in contact with a chance.

I supposed you never got a promotion at your job? Why is it any different for these guys. these coaches have to get their start somewhere.

GO BE A FAN FOR ANOTHER TEAM. YOUR NEGATIVE SHIT IS NOT NEEDED HERE.

  21. Jake Says:

D-mon it is because of pollyannas like you that the Glazers get away with the sh*t that they do. Perhaps it would be better for the Bucs if morons like you went to root for another team.

  22. Mr. Lucky Says:

Hey Joe I have an idea – lets set up a cage match between Jake & D-money!

  23. Mr. Lucky Says:

Jake as for you spending $2500 a year for season tickets I ask you why? If you’re THIS unhappy with the Glazers running of the bucs why do you continue to line their pockets? Just so you can claim that you’re a fan?

I follow the Bucs, watch all their games on TV and go to 1 game a year – I didn’t go to any this year. I enjoy rooting for certain players and have “claimed” the Bucs as my “home team” since 1993.

The one thing I can say is this: the team owes you, me, all fans NOTHING. The Glazers are running a business first and foremost – winning is a far second to making a profit first.

Do I like that? Who cares? I don’t own the team. I don’t have a say but if I don’t like the “product” then I can choose to spend my $ on other sports venue if i so choose. If you really don’t like how the Glazers are – don’t give them any more of your money. Seriously man.

  24. D-money Says:

    Mr lucky,
You are exactly right. If Jake is going to continue to spend money on season tickets then he only has himself to blame. I never said i agree with everything that is done with the team. My point is that I am a fan of the team and Im not going to give myself a heartburn over things I can’t change. I’ll leave that up to the people who are supposed to now football.
Whatever their motivations are is not my concern. My concern is being a fan of whoever they sign and the guys who wear the pewter and red on sundays. If they go 2-12 next year and the year after that i’ll still be a fan. But you know what I can watch on TV or listen on the radio and that will not give the glazers a penny.

And Jake, as for me letting the Glazers “get away with the shit they do” I haven’t paid to go to a game in 2 years. Because Im not stupid enough to spend $2500 dollars for season tickets and then cry about it when the team goes 3-13. Everyone in the world, except maybe you, new that is what we were in for.

You my friend are the one who is letting them “get away” with things because you are the one who still spends your money on the product.
If you really want to make them notice then stop buying tickets. All the rants and complaining and calling me names like a little baby on JBF.com and any other message board isn’t going to do a thing.

  25. JDouble Says:

The Glazers took a joke of a franchise and gave us a proud top defense for over a decade, made the playoffs several times, been to a few champianship games, and won a Super Bowl. We hit a rut over the last 3-4 years and weren’t progressing so they cut Gruden and started from scratch. All the sudden they are horrible owners that won’t spend money, every move they make is horrible, and they don’t care about the Bucs or Tampa Bay fans. Gimme a break. What a bunch of dillusional crybaby douche bags.

I don’t like this particular move, I think we need to get some more experienced coaches on our staff….but I’m not going to throw a tantrum and cry about how long I’ve been a fan. Have some faith or get the f*** out. So tired of ridiculous fairweather fans with unrealistic expectations and over active imaginations. The sky is not falling! We are rebuilding, it had to be done and it can’t be done in one week. If you don’t have the patients to handle that, then take a break. Come jump back on the wagon in a few years when we are badass again.

  26. D-money Says:

    Tell em Jdouble,

The fair-weather fans forget that the Glazers built this team from nothing. So hey, what if they are struggling with cash? Big deal its their team it’s their investment. If they need to cut spending to get back into the black then go ahead and do it. I wouldn’t expect any sound business to spend money they don’t have. That would be stupid.

If they don’t have the money they don’t have the money. But if that is the case I have no doubts that when they do have the money it will be spent wisely as they have proven to do in the past.

  27. Louie Says:

Can we PLEASE get away from accusing people of not being a Bucs fan? If you’ve taken the time to come to this blog, you’re a Bucs fan, period. If you’re happy with the current direction of the team, then great. If not, then that’s your right to complain about it (anybody remember “free speech”?). Either way, it doesn’t diaqualify you from being a Bucs fan.

I appreciate everyone’s point of view. I don’t agree with everyone, but on occasion I find myself re-thinking my positions based on other’s perspective. I enjoy the healthy dialog found in these blogs except when it gets petty.

  28. JoelGlazerLovesMikeBrown Says:

Jake: I agree – the Glazers need to be held accountable. However, D-Money is right: Only money talks and if you keep spending money on tickets, then you are part of the problem, not part of the answer.

JDouble: Wake up. Bucs circa 1995 through 2003 or so were led by Malcolm Glazer, who apparently cared about the product on the field as much as, or more than, the receipts at the gate. Now that he’s not involved in the day-to-day operations, things are completely different. The same thing happened in Cincinnati when Paul Brown passed away and left his beancounter son Mike in charge (thus my moniker). Mike Brown cares only about making sure the Bengals are competitive enough to sell tickets; he couldn’t care less about a Lombardi trophy.

Second point regarding the Glazers: Even if they care about winning a championship, they overreached tremendously in buying Man U. They leveraged the purchase to the hilt, assuming that the rapid increase in market values in ALL professional sports teams that took place during the 90’s and first half of this decade would increase the equity in the team enough to give them a tolerable debt:equity ratio. Unfortunately for them, Bucs fans, and Man U fans alike, sports franchise market values have plateaued along with most other major assets in this economy. So… now they’re screwed royally. They’re debt is huge and the interest is accruing exponentially. They can’t sell Man U because they’re upside down. So their only hope is to refinance – thus the bond offering to the Man U players. That’s an unheard-of move in pro sports.

So even if they WANTED to spend tons of money on FA and potentially field a Super Bowl competitive team, they can’t. They’re screwed, and we’re all screwed with them. Their only recourse is to sell off major assets to try to save the day, thus their sale of one of their kickball stars (Ronaldo?) for millions of bucks. That’s the first step of a huge slide into bankruptcy.

Oftentimes sports fans know nothing about business ownership. I do, and I’m here to tell you all the signs are on the wall for them to slip into Ch 11 reorganization. Watch for it within the next 24 months, unless they can sell one of these two franchises first.

  29. JOSH P Says:

WELL PUT JDOUBLE….. IF IT WASN’T FOR THEM OWNING THE “MAN U” SOCCER TEAM AND THIS WAS GOING ON EVERYONE WOULD BE ALL ABOUT THE REBUILDING PROCESS…HELL YOU WOULD THINK AFTERTHE 14 YEARS OF LOOSING IN THE 80’S AND 90’S WE WOULD BE ABLE TO HAVE A LITTLE PATIENCE. I GUESS WE JUST GOT A LITTLE SPOILED…. 2011 IS THE YEAR BUCS FANS NEED TO BE FOCUSED ON GETTING BACK IN TO THE PLAYOFF HUNT.. 2010 WILL BE A YEAR WHERE WE WANT TO SEE PROGRESS NOT PLAYOFFS(IF IT HAPPENS GREAT,BUT DON’T SET THE STANDARD THAT HIGH). I WOULD LIKE TO SEE HILLIARD OR MCCARDELL AT THE WR COACH POSITION BUT THE ONE THING TO LOOK AT IS THAT THIS KID HAS EARNED EVERYTING HE HAS GOTTEN..HE HAS NO TIES TO THE NFL AND HE IS SLOWLY MOVING UP THE RANKS WHICH TELLS ME THIS KID IS SMART AND DEDICATED TO HIS JOB(WHICH ARE NOT BAD QUALITIES TO HAVE IN A COACH) WHO KNOWS MAYBE HE’S A DIAMOND IN THE ROUGH!!!!

  30. JOSH P Says:

    JoelGlazerLovesMikeBrown

I LIKE YOUR KNOWLEDGE OF THE BUSINESS BUT MY ONLY THING WOULD BE WHY DID THEY PAY BRYANT 9 MIL LAST SEASON, THEY GAVE WINSLOW A CONTRACT EXTENTION WITH 20 MIL OF GUARANTEED MONEY, THEY PAID CLAYTON 10.5 MIL OF GUARANTEED MONEY, AND DERRICK WARD WITH 6 MIL OF GUARANTEED MONEY WHICH IS 46 MIL THEY INVESTED LAST SEASON.. IF THEY WE TRYING TO JUST CUT MONEY THEN WHY WOULDN’T THEY HAVE JUST LEFT WILLIAMS AND GRAHAM TO RUN THE BALL AND LEFT WARD ALONE AND SAVED 6 MIL. AND WHY GIVE CLAYTON THAT KIND OF MONEY ITS NOT LIKE HE IS A FAN FAVORITE HE WOULDN’T HAVE BEEN MISSED AND THEY WOULD HAVE SAVED 10 MIL AND AS FOR BRYANT IF THEY WERE TRUELY TRYING TO CUT THE PAYROLL TO NOTHING THEY COULD HAVE JUSTIFIED NOT PAYING HIM 9 MIL LAST YEAR. AND WHY GO OUT AND TRADE FOR WINSLOW KNOWING YOU WILL HAVE TO SIGN HIM TO A CONTRACT EXTENTION. EITHER THEY ARE THE STUPIDEST INVESTORS I HAVE EVER MET I MYLIFE OR WE MIGHT NOT KNOW IN DEPTH OF WHAT IS REALLY GOING ON ACROSS THE WATER. JUST SEEMS LIKE THEY SPENT A LOT OF MONEY LAST YEAR FOR SOMEONE WHO KOWS THEY CAN’T AFFORD IT..AND IF YOUR THEORY IS CORRECT THEN THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO TRADE THE FIRST ROUND PICK THIS COMING DRAFT AND I DON’T SEE THAT HAPPENING

  31. Jake Says:

D-Mon, look I have nothing against you or anyone else on this board. One thing is true we are all fans or we wouldnt be posting on this board. These boards are the one place we fans can vent about the things that aggravate us about the current state of affairs with the team. This is the only way our voice gets heard. So we can agree to disagree about the Glazers and move on from there and hopefully talk football.

  32. JoelGlazerLovesMikeBrown Says:

JOSH P: I get your point and the only thing I can think of is that the Glazers have to worry about the salary floor. Besides the salary cap, there’s a designated level of spending they HAVE to achieve according to the CBA.

It’s been well documented here on JBF and other sites that the Bucs have been one of the lowest – if not the actual lowest – spending teams over the last 5 years. That’s the true test of how much they’re spending, not the occasional flashy FA or trade signing such as K2. You’ll notice the big signings you mentioned are all players – thus satisfying the CBA salary floor. Don’t look for any flashy coaching signings, as that makes no difference in regards to the CBA.

And again, it’s not clear to me whether the Glazers are entering Mike Brown territory, per my prevous post, or whether they truly do want to field a competitive team, but the quagmire they’re in with Man U is preventing that. Ultimately, it doesn’t matter. Their financial troubles are reflected in nearly every move they make, to the ultimate detriment of the team.

  33. BigMacAttack Says:

Let’s hear it for your 2010′ “US Bankruptcy Court – Buccaneers”.

The Honorable Judge Rodney May – GM
    &
The Honorable Judge Alexander Paskay – Head Coach

They will be wearing Throwback Robes on the Sidelines.

  34. JOSH P Says:

    JoelGlazerLovesMikeBrown

i understand the CBA deal… the ward and clayton signings fall right into what you are saying… Winslow on the other hand i beleive they are hoping to have the finacial issues some what cleaned up with in the next 2 years and Winslow is a big part of the rebuilding plan and i do think they will make a couple of trades this off season that will allow them to aquire a few playes and make their contracts backend heavy!!! by saying that i wouldn’t be surprised to see them make a deal with KC to aquire Dorsey which would save us some money by not having to pay a top 3 draft choice and pick up an additional pick.. i do think they are still trying to build a competitive team the best that they are able to right now.. i think we will see some real progress next year. but if they don’t go out and do anythink this off season they are pretty much putting it out on the table about what they are doing!!!! good talking to ya JoelGlazerLovesMikeBrown

    go bucs!!!

  35. Alex Says:

Has anyone ever heard of that guy who coaches the Patriots. Last i saw he graduated from Wesleyan, a small division III school that is in the exact same league as Hamilton. There are many intangibles that a coach needs to have to be successful, many qualities that simply cannot be taught. He clearly is a smart guy and also has the work ethic. If you question his position so be it but it seems like within the ranks he is respected and by a previous coaches testimony he has what it takes to be a great coach.
