It Starts With Freeman

January 8th, 2010

Ask about any Bucs fan what the team’s priority should be in the offseason and one can get a different opinion from each one.

Many, like Joe, believe the Bucs need to draft a defensive tackle in the first round.

Others may say the Bucs need to draft a strong safety.

Still others will suggest the Bucs need a linebacker.

Raheem the Dream says the Bucs already have their priority: quarterback Josh Freeman.

In a Buccaneers Team report via Yahoo! Sports, Raheem the Dream said the team’s priority is to help Freeman.

“As far as priorities for me, No. 5 (Josh Freeman). He is the No. 1 priority. It starts with him.”

Joe wonders if Raheem the Dream is hinting the Bucs will draft offense to surround Freeman with targets and talent?

Or was this a head-fake by Raheem the Dream?

Seems like every year we talk about the draft its either drafting all offense or all defense. Never a little of both.

  2. Jeff Says:

Trade Josh Johnson, Clayton and the #3 pick for the #1 overall pick, then get Chad Pennington as the veteran backup, and draft Suh.

I think Freeman will make a nice leap, 1 to 2, but I’m already starting to let my mind wander a bit on the possibilities of a Tanard Jackson-Eric Berry safety tandem to go with Talib and Barber.

Then find some pass rush in FA and see what happens back there.

  4. Al Says:

We NEED defense. But I hope one of the 2nd round picks is used for a WR in FA. Or a trade for a WR.

    my scenario.

FA: get Brandon marshall (if we wanna pay 120M for haynesworth, maybe we can pay something nice for this guy)
    1 pick: DT
2a: WR (maybe golden tate still available)
    2b and other picks: DEFENSE!!!!!

Ward and Graham still have plenty to give and could become a suprisingly good 1-2 punch. If they keep Caddy (I hope they do) then they need to find a way to get these three backs in sync. We need to pursue a good veteran backup and look for a diamond in the rough as our third QB. We need to dump Clayton at almost all cost and get either Marshall or Boldin. I don’t mean try, I mean get one of those two WR. No Haynesworth/Vilma near misses this time. Do it early before the expiration of AB’s contract. When we add a real #1 WR then offer AB an excellent longterm deal as a #2 WR and noone else comes to match it we will have succeeded. The Draft for the most part (Rnds 1-5) need to be spent on Upgrading the Defense. While I would not complain if we took a DB rd 1 we really need to get that next DE a Sapp-like player who is what Adams was supposed to be. We need to start looking for that blue collar NT interior D-linemen to replace Hovan as he Ages over the next 2+ years. And of course we need those ever elusive playmakers in our 2ndary and linebacking corps. This is why we need to first, meaning this week, evaluate our talent evaluators. It all starts in the scouting department. Our scouting dept has not been the same since we started exporting our scouts to other teams as GM’s and player personnel heads. We definitely have to get a good OC. Olson, as he was with the Chiefs, just doesn’t have what it takes to be an OC in this league. Maybe, and I really mean MAYBE he might be an OK QB coach. OK doesn’t cut it in Tampa anymore. Those days left with Ray Perkins, Leeman Bennett and Richard Williamson. Sam Wyche started us on the road to getting over the OK mentality and Dungy took that to an even higher level. We as fans, especially us longterm fans since the ’70’s, deserve it. GO Bucs!!

That’s the same quote from the press conference on Monday. It seems like Coach Morris was talking about free agency more than the draft and possibly even coaches/coaching. Full quote.

“As far as priorities for me, number five (Josh Freeman). He is the number one priority. It starts with him. Then after that the draft and building around him, our team and what we are going to be. You have to say that number five is the biggest priority, making sure everything works around him because when it works around him, we were able to be successful at the end of the season there. The next biggest priority has to be the draft. We have 10 big time draft picks coming up. I have to get the exact number but I know we have three really high ones. You never know what you can do in the draft. Maybe we’ll find another Sammie Stroughter. That has to be a priority there.”

nice point steve!!! all i wanna say is!! get Brandon Marshall!!!

  9. Travis Says:

Draft berry with our first pick. Then with your 2 second round picks take a dt maybe T.Cody (Not a great pass rusher but will help out on the run alot) then with the other take a WR maybe Jordan Shipley. He seems like he catches just about everything thrown at him, like our version of Wes Welker.

It seems the question is what would help Freeman the most? O-Line? WR?

  11. FlBoy84 Says:

“It seems the question is what would help Freeman the most? O-Line? WR?”

Have to add QB Coach and an innovative OC in there as well.

  12. JerrJenn2 Says:

    Very Good Point, FlBoy84

  13. Leighroy Says:

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think Raheem is talking about the draft at all when he says his “number one priority is number 5.” I think he’s just talking about getting the film study and work done with him and getting offseason reps.

I say this cuz then he started on the draft after saying that first. And let’s face it, making sure “everything works around him” includes addressing the defense.
