No More Creamsicles This Season

November 10th, 2009

Most of the Bucs players loved them.

The vast majority of the fans were wild over them.

The Bucs cheerleaders looked especially hot in them.

TV viewers with HD enjoyed them.

But the NFL suits aren’t as won over by them.

“Them” is the Bucs creamsicle uniforms. Sadly, writes Tom Balog of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the creamsicle uniforms won’t be seen again, not this year anyway.

An e-mail response from an NFL spokesman on Monday stated that all 32 teams must declare far in advance, by July 1, whether they wish to wear a throwback jerseys that season.

All teams can wear throwbacks for a maximum of two games per season, according to NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy.

The Buccaneers, according to McCarthy, requested to wear throwbacks only once this season, Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Kevin O’Donnell of WTVT-TV Channel 13 reported via his Twitter account that Bucs co-chairman Ed Glazer told him the creamsicles could return for two games next season.

Figures the NFL has some stupid rule like this. To bad, well when we lose the rest of our games it can be blamed only on the lack of the orange and bucco bruce. I guess its OK for the old AFL teams to wear them more than twice a year? Special occasion?

The throwbacks were awesome and that was the most pumped I have seen a bucs crowd in years. To be honest the energy in that stadium was equal to the 1979 Philadelphia Egale palyoff game.

The throwbacks should come back every year for at least a game and two would be better.

Yes. This season is the 50th year of the AFL.

San Diego was the same way with the Powder Blues a few years ago. Players and fans loved them. The bust them out for big rivalry games or primetime games. Over the course of a couple years they have become so popular that the Chargers I think added them as one of their regular optional uniforms because it seems like they are in them at least 3-4 times per year. Good luck with your creamsicles!

I knew this was going to happen the bucs only win will come in orange and everybody will be saying it was the uniforms that made them win.

Freeman looked like a creamsickle on the 3rd down slide, coming up short for the first down. Isnt’ he 6-6 260? This is football!

  6. Justin Says:

If the Bucs really want them, they could add them as an alternate correct?

Or are there special rules about the alternates as well?

It’s fine… makes it more special win they do wear them.

I seem to recall that in 1994 (the 75th anniversary season of the NFL) that the 49ers requested (and were granted) permission to wear their throwback unis for the remainder of that season after they won their first two games in them and lost when they went back to their regular kit. Granted, that year was the start of this throwback uni craze…and perhaps the league has adopted rules about it since then…but it seems as though the league created a precedent there. If the Bucs really wanted to push for it, they probably could on that basis. If they lose this week in the pewter and red down in Miami, they might want to reconsider.

I disagree. Has everyone forgotten how much we hated (and I mean HATED!) those orange creamsickle uniforms and Bucco Bruce around this town? How embarrassed we were that our logo was WINKING like George Hamilton in Zorro the Gay Blade?

This past Sunday was great nostalgia and it was AWESOME to see a team wearing THOSE uniforms first play competitively and then push an opponent around by the end of the game. Even during the Buccaneers’ good seasons of that era we never saw that.

I say, if we’re going to keep those uniforms around then we should keep them sitting on the shelf most of the time and keep them special. I think dragging them out once every four or five seasons would be about perfect for my taste.

I like the idea of Tampa Bay having two throwback games annual now that they got a win in them. For next season, I’m hopeful one of the throwback games is against the Steelers. Perhaps someone in the Buccaneers Organization should get the idea rolling since this throwback game was a success not only in a victory, but also in Marketing and Sales. Speaking of wins, it definitely feels good to get a win given what’s been going on during this season for Buccaneers Fans.

i say we roll ’em out every year for the old NFC Norris Division rivalries.
