First Down Swing Pass Has To Go

November 8th, 2009
Joe suspects this Cadillac Williams drop was the perplexing swing pass on 2nd-and-4 from the Packers 7 after Caddy ran for six yards on first down.

Joe suspects this Cadillac Williams non-catch was on the perplexing swing pass call on 2nd-and-4 from the Packers' 7 after Caddy ran for six yards on first down.

Yes, Joe is happy as a clam right now. But there was still plenty that got under Joe’s skin during this game.

No. 1 on the list is the Bucs’ Chucky-like abandonment of the running game — over and over again. This Packers game was never out of reach. There was no excuse.

Joe thought today was the day to establish the run-first, play-action identity Raheem The Dream kept talking about ad nauseum for months. So what do the Bucs do with Josh Freeman on his opening drive? They open with a swing pass to Cadillac Williams that a nervous Freeman overthrows en route to a 3-and-out.

This is your identity, Rah? Your violent, smath mouth identity?

Fast forward to the Bucs driving for the winning touchdown after Michael Clayton’s deep catch at the Packers’ 13 yard line.

On first down, Cadillac Williams ran for six yards to the Packers’ 7 yard line. Then the Bucs threw the same darn swing pass to Cadillac on 2nd-and-4. Incomplete. Where the hell was another run play to take pressure off the young QB? Pound the freakin rock down there.

On third down the Bucs threw incomplete, and then Freeman and Sammie Stroughter earned hero honors with the winning touchdown.

Joe’s just praying the Bucs decide to pound the ball a bit more. It’s the answer in the long run with the talent on their roster.

I was thinking the same thing. Why are the Bucs not running the ball to help take the pressure off Freeman. It turned out OK this time, but I wouldn’t count on Freeman being able to regularly win games through the air just yet. Freeman lucked out a couple times today as Green Bay should have had a couple more picks.

Joe’s blatant hatred of Coach Morris only adds to his lack of credibility and the laughingstock that is joebucsfan.com. In other words, Joe is a tool.

  3. Jeff Says:

Joe, some of us are still waiting to admit you were wrong about starting Freeman in this game…

  4. Jeff Says:

    for you to admit

  5. BucForce Says:

Maybe taking the “Green Bay Packers Merchandise” ad off the side of your web page would be a good start…

i almost feel like this web site should be call joe.aint.a.bucs.fan.com

Wow, lets slow down now every one. It’s just 1 win, we’re all talkin like the Bucs have locked up a 1st round bye in the playoffs with all this Joe bashing. Freeman had a solid game, made some rookie mistakes but you can’t expect him to perform this way every week (we would like to hope to). 1 game, 5 games, 1 year, isn’t enough to gauge Freeman yet. We need to start getting dedicated to the ground game, I don’t like seeing Ward make a TD catch, I’d rather see him run one in, or Caddy be used more when he’s getting 5 yards a pop.

Maybe Joe was a bit critical of the pick but we had more pressing needs that early (or so I thought at the time, but with the way Dominik/Morirs gutted the team maybe a QB was needed). We’ll see how it turns out, but hopefully this is where the team turns the corner and starts showing some real progress.

I’m just freaking glad that we won’t be going 0-16…Honestly?! I liked Freemon today, he is raw, but man he is a specimen…

For the rest of you guys…Joe is huge on hyperbole, just like the Big Dog…If he admits anything it will be a surprise…Even if he does admit some wrong he’ll show how some how it showed how another one of his comments was correct…

  9. Justin Says:

Joe doesn’t control the merchandise ads. It’s probably a Google algorithm that picks up tags, like “Green Bay”, and places related ads on the site.

In fact, I’m sure that’s the case. Why would Joe try to target Green Bay fans? He wouldn’t.

  10. The Captain Says:

WHAT RUNNING GAME? We had something like 80yrds on the ground the whole game and 25 of those were from Freeman! Joe you are a blind nutless monkey to even think we had a running game at all today.

  11. Joe Says:

Justin is right. Those are Google ads and Joe doesn’t control those.

Joe saw the Packers gear ad yesterday. Sometimes, that means there are a bunch of IP addresses logging on from Wisconsin. Not always the case but that does happen from time to time.

Last summer Joe had a post that had connections to Alabama and Tennessee. Not long after, there were Google ads selling Bama and Vols gear because so many people from those states were logging on and reading Joe.

  12. Ackall Says:

I think a lot of you need to learn how to read. …What, you’re mad at Joe for questioning some playcalling and disagreeing with a draft pick? That’s what fans do. That’s what analyzing a game and a team is all about. Ride high with the good and question what you don’t like. That’s sort of what makes it fun.

    Joe here,

Anyone writing that Joe isn’t a Bucs fan, or that JoeBucsFan.com lacks credibility is out of their mind.

  14. Eric S Says:

Agree with some posters with their comments. It was only one game, but Freeman sure looked ready to me. Thank god that the coaching stuff doesn’t listen to Joe about a lot of things. He also made the Packers D out to be the ’85 Bears. That they aren’t. The whole vibe of the team just seemed different with Freeman in there. He did make rookie mistakes, but 3 TDs and only 1 pick is a very nice start. And to bring the Bucs back from 11 down was awesome. Just awesome. I can definitely see the Bucs winning a few more games down the stretch. I would say that the win did probably guaranteed Morris another year. If he went winless, I am not sure he would have survived. He and Mark D. have to do a better job in the offseason.

    Joe here,

Agree with you that we should be thankful the coaching staff doesn’t pay attention to what Joe has to say. Joe doesn’t advise game planning through this Web site.

  16. Jolly Rodger Says:

Something that always bothered me about Gruden’s play calling was that he had a tendency to give up on the run too quickly and coordinator Greg Olson is following that Gruden plan to a tee. He as much said he was going to, so really, why the suprise.

That said, as much as I would like to see the Bucs be more patient with the running game (Williams did average over 4 yrds a carry), it was very apparent that the Packer defense, as has been the case every game this season, has been stacking the box and forcing the QB to beat them. It is quite simply taking what the defense is giving you. Fortunately Josh Freeman was able to hit on enough big plays to do that. So maybe if he has continued/increased success spreading things out, defenses will start easing guys out of the box, thus opening more opportunities to develope a sustained running game.

  17. BigMacAttack Says:

Freeman did an admirable job, but it is only one game. Nevertheless it was a great feeling at the Stands to finally get a win. Why would anyone say Joe is not a Buc Fan? Only someone who really loves a team would go to the trouble to make a site like this. New content every day. We have Carlson and White posting good reports every week. When a team is in shambles, change only comes about with discontentment of the fans. Face it peeps, this team is far from being a winner yet. When a Government in in shambles, change only comes about when citizens are no longer willing to accept the status quo. Those days are approaching fast, and those that who are willing to just take whatever comes their way and believe everything they are told without reason are Sheeple.

  18. Ron Nado Says:

Have to admit, I was wrong!
Atleast for yesterday I was that’s for sure and I’m man enough to admit it.
I did not believe this kid Freeman was ready to come out and lead this team to a victory, I was WRONG…….(but he did have alot of help ) the WHOLE TEAM played around him! Something we have’nt seen in a while!.I am very happy for the kid and for our team. Some of you though need to back off on Joe and other’s though. Alot of you are doing exactly what I said would happen, flippin the switch! I’m seeing alot of “I told you so’s” not only on here but on the OTHER sites. I’ts funny as hell how it can go from this team sucks, this coach sucks, this GM sucks, this Freeman kid sucks, to I told you we should have started him earlier.. LMAO
I’ll admit some of you did say to start him, but not many! It’s one win people, not a play off game! Lets just all sit back and enjoy the damn win! It was awsome!

  19. Dee Says:

As a Tampa fan in Wisconsin, I’m helping pump those google ads in.

I also know a thing or two about packer football and they’re the same team that regularly contains Adrian Peterson to low yardage. These boys can stop the run.

  20. JK Says:

Great work Joe. Always a true fan right or wrong. I have one question about Morris though. Has anyone seen him use the head set he wears? Is it just for looks or does he listen to music with it? He did wrap it around his leg once. I’ve never seen anyone do that before. The Glazers probably fired the wire boy due to budget cuts.
