One Play Turned Leftwich’s Night

August 22nd, 2009

As tight as the quarterback competition has been, one play can mean everything.

Joe believes Byron Lefwich’s night Saturday turned on one play. And if he gets the starting job, he can look back to it and smile. Especially considering how strong a performance Luke McCown turned in.

On Leftwich’s first series, he fell into a 3rd-and-15 after Derrick Ward ran wide for a big loss on the opening carry, followed by Leftwich overthrowing Michael Clayton on second down.

Leftwich dropped to pass on third down and hung in the pocket. He was hit as he threw and threw a strike to Maurice Stovall over middle for a first down.

If he misses that throw or takes a sack, he opens with a three-and-out and may not have bounced back.
