Freeman’s First Big Test

August 7th, 2009

When the Bucs resume training camp this morning for their 10:15 a.m. workout, Raheem the Dream has already decided rookie quarterback Josh Freeman will get significantly more snaps, so reports Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune.

“The QB coach designed it so that if the two older guys came out and executed well we’d give them a little Santa Claus treatment [today],” Morris said. “So we’ll let them rest their arms a little bit and look at the other guys. They needs some opportunities and so we’re going to provide them with that [today].”

Bryon Leftwich, who in recent practices seems to be pulling away from Luke McCown in the early race to win the starting gig, will pretty much get the morning off, as will McCown.

That leaves Freeman and Josh Johnson to pick up the slack.

Much had been made over the summer when the Bucs suggested they were going to put Freeman on a “fast track” because they were disappointed with Freeman and McCown in OTAs. Well, from the practices Joe has viewed and reported from, Freeman has seen limited practice with the first team. That tells Joe the fast track has been derailed.

Today we should see just how NFL-ready Mr. Freeman is.
