Sgt. Winslow AWOL

May 12th, 2009

Though Joe loves the way Sgt. Winslow conducts an interview, Joe wasn’t doing backflips when Bucs general manager Mark Dominik threw away a second round pick on Sgt. Winslow. Given his ability to get hurt, his loud mouth and his less than angelic past, Joe was more than a little skeptical.

Well… look at what has happened:

With this week’s OTAs getting underway at One Buc Palace, guess which Audie Murphy wannabe is nowhere to be found (and no, Son of Bob is not Audie Murphy unless you count Germans getting hit with hand grenades as interceptions).

Sgt. Winslow is absent. And his U bloodbrother and former Bucs great Warren Sapp is none too happy to learn that Sgt. Winslow is AWOL, per Rick Stroud of the St. Petersburg Times.

“So when your team fires up OTA’s and you’re not here, I guess you’re being misunderstood again, right?” Sapp said. “Your past don’t equal your future, but it will damn sure give me some reflection of what you might do. I’ll leave it at that.”

Joe wonders if future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez, who the Dixie Chicks also got for a second round pick, is going to blow off OTAs in Atlanta?

AWOL? That implies the team wasn’t aware he wouldn’t be there. Apparently, the Bucs were informed that he had a conflict. Absent, yes. Without leave, no.

Now why should Joe concern himself with such technicalities. Joe even told us objectivitity in sports news is ancient history.

I smell a libel suit from Winslow. Just kidding. It sure is hard to be AWOL for an optional practice though.

If you want to show other people your dedication, desire and willingness to be great – you find a way to show up. There are 2 sides to every story, but this routine happens the same every year for NFLers. It’s not like he didn’t know…

Way to get to know your team mates and build some chemistry Sarge. Primadonna’s.
