Cases Dismissed Against Talib’s Mom

June 26th, 2012

In what Joe hopes sends a resounding message to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about the validity of the recently dropped felony assault case against Aqib Talib, the Dallas County District Attorney dismissed the felony assault with a deadly weapon charge today against Okolo Talib, Aqib’s mom.

Okolo Talib also had a charge against her of unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, based on a previous conviction, which also was dismissed today.

Aqib Talib and his mother’s nearly simultaneous arrests had stemmed from the same March 2011 incident outside Talib’s sister’s home in Garland, Texas.

This is very curious considering that both Aqib Talib and his mother told police, per police affidavits, that Okolo Talib fired a gun multiple times during the March 2011 domestic disturbance that led to their arrests. In that affidavit linked above, there also are reports of witness statements that Okolo Talib fired at Shannon Billings, the sex offender who was involved with Talib’s sister and was reportedly fleeing from the scene.

Not that Joe wishes ill on Talib’s mom, but something really stinks here in the dropping of both charges. And the stench isn’t coming from the Talibs.

Again, Joe hopes Roger Goodell takes note and passes on holding Talib accountable for the events surrounding the March 2011 shooting.

Glad to see that Texas is still a state where you can resolve your issues with a pistol.

  2. Macabee Says:

    Joe,

Perfectly understandable! The state has no witness. Not only was Billings not credible, he is now a hostile witness who refuses to cooperate. I bet the only visitor he’s had since his incarceration is Talib’s sister. I would not be at all surprised if Billings ever sees the light of day, there is a reconciliation. Don’t ask me to explain the rationale.

Then again, it might not be unlawful in the state of Texas to shoot at armadillos, polecats, and recidivist sex offenders!

  3. SeminoleSam Says:

Macabee, that still doesn’t apply to the felony firearm charge. And there were other witnesses. Strange.

  4. BamBamBuc Says:

My guess is that, as much evidence as the state had, there was enough contradictory statements made to make this difficult to prosecute. Even one person saying “I saw the whole thing and she never fired” is enough to create reasonable doubt, even when there are 10 others saying she did. Even Okolo’s own statement changed numerous times. Funny thing is, since Aqib’s case has been dismissed, I’m betting she could say that it wasn’t her, but Aqib that was shooting and they couldn’t do anything against him because of “double jeopardy”. Basically, it looks like nobody will pay any price for firing weapons in residential neighborhoods (regardless of the target).

  5. Macabee Says:

    SeminoleSam,

You’re right. Obviously, I have no firsthand knowledge here, but I would assume it became a case of small potatoes. No public outcry, no personal or property damage, mounting caseloads, and taxing budgets, they were probably happy to wash their hands of the sordid mess!

I don’t know what Joe smells, but I don’t think anybody was paid off and not implying that Joe believes that either.

  6. FreemanBomb5 Says:

Great news… Now Talib will not have to worry about his mother being incarcerated and can have no excuses to not play lights out. I predict that Schiano announces Talib to be a Buccaneer Man and we resign him. Hopefully Dom doesn’t give him some kind of absurd contract but I certainly hope he remains with the team for the duration of his athletic prime.

  7. Vic Says:

How the hell do they drop the felony gun charge if she wasn’t supposed to fire/have a weapon? That wasn’t in dispute. Shi* man, if a felon on my block goes postal I’d appreciate a punishment.

  8. Fritz50 Says:

“Shi* man, if a felon on my block goes postal I’d appreciate a punishment.”

Not sure using a gun to protect your daughter, from a known sex offender, at that, qualifies as “going postal”.

Still, seems funny the weapon’s charge was dropped, but would guess they couldn’t get anybody to testify other than the victim. with the associated problems. You’re surprised at this, living in a state where 2 gang members shoot AK47s at each other, killing a bystander, and then both get off on the “stand your ground” defense? Welcome to the new world.

  9. Thomas2.2 Says:

My suspicion all along was that Talib paid Billings, through Talib’s sister, to either recant or make it clear that Billings would blow up the state’s case.

  10. Vic Says:

Yeah Thomas, nice and possible theory, but how does that explain Texas dropping the felon using a gun thing on his mom. That has nothing to do with Billings.

  11. Thomas2.2 Says:

Bc Billings was THE eyewitness to the using the gun part you idiot.

  12. Drew Says:

Can’t wait for the season to start. I’ll either shower them with LOVE or shred them with HATE.

  13. Drew Says:

    Thomas 2.2,

Show a little love to your fellow bloggers. Why are you being so harsh? Idiot is a pretty strong word and you may be held in contempt.

  14. Sambizle Says:

0.0 always lighting people up about stupid statements and then says Talib paid off an inmate to keep quite! REEEEEEEEEEEALLY??????????? Sorry bro but that was extremely dumb. Where in the hell is this locked-up cat going to put this get-away/keep-quite-money…………..In his sock? HAHAAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAH ur a dumbass!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. BigMacAttack Says:

Okolo should get a 4 game suspension

  16. Bucfan Says:

Thomas 2.2 is classless and a know it all.

  17. Stevek Says:

Take this show to a “judge sapp”.

Thomas, change your sheep ass diaper and apologize for calling that dude an idiot. 🙂

  18. Eric Says:

Actually Talib puts his mother with a gun. I suppose this Billings guy is such a scum that they just let it go.

Really no legal cause to drop the felon in possession. But she wouldn’t have possessed it but for this idiot assaulting the daughter.

Gun jamming at fence sounds real shaky to me. Who can tell based on that collection of idiots? Threw up their hands and gave up…..

  19. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Thomas…your theory has holes in it. Talibs attorney produced 19 witnesses that said Talib never held the gun and that they only saw his mother holding it.

There were multiple witnesses that Talib’s mother had the gun.

Because she is a felon it was unlawful for her to even own a handgun.

However…a case could be made that calling the police did no good on previous occasions and Talib’s mother feared for the life of her daughter. Since the police were doing no good, she felt “forced” to protect her daughter.

Extenuating circumstances. A jury conviction would be difficult at best.

  20. Eric Says:

How did billing know the gun was “jammed” from striking a fence unless he tried to fire it. That fits into the theory that he was pointing a gun at them and the mother fired in the air and ground.

Incoherent stories all around, just from the police report, let alone what else may have been uncovered.

Be nice if Mr. Talib learned something from this.

  21. BamBamBuc Says:

Billings could have known the gun was jammed if he had it, was running away, being shot at, turned to return fire and realized it was jammed. That also would allow him to see it was actually Aqib chasing him down the street with the gun firing at him. Also, I see no report of Billings actually assaulting his sister at the time of the incident. The most I saw was Billings taking her phone away from her earlier in the day when she attempted to call 911 when they were arguing (which he was jailed for when he talked to police). Talib’s sister maintained contact with Billings, even shared a home with Billings, despite previous disputes between them, despite previous sexual assault charges, despite filing for restraining orders against him. For all anyone knows, he was going home to get a baloney sandwich when he was confronted by Talib and family. Maybe he was going back to apologize for the earlier argument like most scumbag abusers do after they’ve hurt the one they care about (and before they do it again…). I will NOT say Billings is a good or decent person, but I WILL say Saran was just as stupid, reckless, and put herself in that situation on a repeated basis. It’s possible Aqib and Okolo had attempted to get her out of that situation many times before, only for her to go back. You all may think I’m crazy here, but I’m putting Saran Talib as the heart of the problem here. If she won’t move on from this idiot, then she’s gonna get hurt, Billings may get shot, and Aqib will probably end up in jail….. but it’s all Billings fault, right?

    @Thomas2.2
“My suspicion all along was that Talib paid Billings, through Talib’s sister, to either recant or make it clear that Billings would blow up the state’s case.”

Just when I thought you couldn’t possibly become more stupid than you already are, you go go and say something like that. I guess you are still trying to defend the fact that you looked like a complete id1ot when you kept saying he would be found guilty, only for the trial to last 5 mins and be dismissed because of the extremely weak case against Talib.

  23. Hawaiian Buc Says:

“My suspicion all along was that Talib paid Billings, through Talib’s sister, to either recant or make it clear that Billings would blow up the state’s case.”

    ———-

Best joke I’ve heard in quite a while. This dumb arse refuses to admit he was wrong, which makes him into a bigger dumb arse. We’ve all been wrong before, it’s okay to just admit it. Now you are claiming to have had a suspicion all along? Wow, just wow.

  24. Dini's Biceps Says:

Talib makes Pro Bowl this year. Okolo sponsors troubled kids to attend Bucs games for free “Okolo’s Outlaws”

  25. OAR Says:

We really need to stop saying to Thomass ,”How stupid can you be?”
    Cause I think he’s taking it as a challenge…..

  26. canadabuc Says:

Time for the Talib’s to celebrate. Raise your glocks to sky and fire off a couple rounds for your homies!!

  27. Eric Says:

Wonder how many PTA meetings the mother has attended? Bake sales?

  28. OAR Says:

Why do I get the funny feeling, if Okolo attended any bake sales, her pies would be like the one from The Help?

  29. Eric Says:

I heard one of the Joes is dating Talib’s sister.

Picks her up in a sherman tank.

  30. admin Says:

    Joe here,

@Eric — C’mon, now. It’s obvious Joe only surrounds himself with the finest local talent.

  31. fernando Says:

The commish can’t touch talib. This incident happened when the CBA wasn’t in place. This could turn into a legal mess for the league. Also Talib was never tested for gun powder residue. Some guys have all the luck!!!!
