Freeman An Interesting Pick For Jim Rome

July 19th, 2011

Now Joe is no Jim Rome fan. Joe was intrigued when Rome first arrived on Tampa Bay airwaves in the 1990s on the old 1040 AM “The Score” back in ’95 or ’96, but his shtick got very old many years ago for Joe.

Regardless, Rome now hosts powerful national radio and television shows that surely have their pick of guests. So it was eye-opening to Joe that Rome returned from a long summer vacation yesterday and chose Josh Freeman to be a guest on his Rome Is Burning TV show on BSPN.

Freeman?

Maybe there’s more respect out there for the Bucs and Freeman than Joe thinks. Given the lockout, that’s not the Bucs PR staff booking Freeman and hounding show producers. That’s Rome and his team busting off a text or phone call to Freeman.

Freeman didn’t offer anything earth-shattering during the interview. He said he thinks the offense is sharp and hasn’t missed a beat without OTAs and a traditional minicamp, saying guys were very sharp on the playbook in Bradenton.

Asked about the defense, Freeman praised Aqib Talib for working with receivers in the offseason in Tampa — hmm, Joe read somewhere that Talib left town — plus Gerald McCoy and Tyrone McKenzie’s training efforts. And Freeman liked what he saw overall.

“Our defense looked good, man. They were actually throwing some stuff in our minicamp as far as pressures, stuff we wouldn’t normally see. I’m like, ‘C’mon guys, this is just supposed to be laid back, supposed to be just kind of going through some of the base schemes and gettin’ a good feel and get out there and run around as a team.’

“They’re throwing corner blitzes and double-corner blitzes and just crazy stunts and stuff.”

Freeman’s clearly raring to go when the asinine lockout ends. Joe can only wonder how much more national media will come calling if the Bucs land Freeman another toy or two in free agency and he puts up video game numbers.

yeah i was randomly watching that yesterday when they said freeman was coming up after the commercial break (i try to stay away from espn whenever i can)
but the best part was at the end when rome tried to set him up with a question about wether his lockeroom likes Goodell and what his fellow players think of him. freeman said outright he wasnt going to get into any particulars which prompted rome to say, “good job josh, thats how you read that defense!” lol

freeman isnt stupid enough to take that bait

Rome is turning into a big Freeman fan…..he talked about the player workouts at IMG. Not an exact quote, but:

“Player workouts are a joke…..unless Josh Freeman is running them. This guy is getting nowhere the amount of run he deserves.”

Personally I love Rome….although I find he’s at his best when he’s not talking about sports. Love his takes on Top Gun, sales jobs, etc

Peter King is at it again…

He was just on PTI on BSPN and they were talking about Peyton Manning becoming an unrestricted free agent. He was asked if Manning would ever sign somewhere else. King said that Tampa and Kansas City are the only teams with enough cap money to pay him but neither team needs a quarterback and then King said it…

“…and I know people in Tampa are screaming that we have to go sign Manning.”

    Really Peter…REALLY?

I respect the guy but after last years 2-14 and now this maybe he should just stop talking about the Bucs.

Jim Rome has stated numerous times he’s a big Freeman fan. Freeman’s been on Rome’s show(radio and TV) 4-5 times since last season.

The only thing I like about that show is when Jim Everett about beat Rome’s ass on national television. Now that was classic. Did you see the fear in Rome’s eyes? I just about fell off the couch laughing.

On another note, if we can just sign Talib to the extension he deserves First Mate Timmy (aka Capt Tim) will be a happy little skipper’s assistant.

  10. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Ain’t that right, little buddy?

  11. FreemanBomb5 Says:

haha I’m in the crowd that wants Talib extended

  12. Brandon Says:

I would love to see Freeman end what Jim Everett started, that was a truly classic scene.

So since I have posted this on topics twice now, but they have not been the top topic when I posted and it might have gone unnoticed:

    http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d820caaf6/article/owners-players-reach-agreement-on-economics-of-labor-deal?module=HP11_headline_stack

If you look at the thirteenth paragraph, you notice this little gem:

“While the institution of a rookie compensation system is a concession in itself, the players’ side gave a little more in allowing some rules preventing the renegotiation of draft picks’ deals until after three years. The owners’ concessions came on the price tag for the fifth-year option for first-round picks, which the players want paid at the top of the market. It was learned Saturday that the fifth-year option must be picked up after Year 3.”

This is going to kill Florio’s idea (I think Joe said it was Florio’s) that we are going to extend guys like Freeman, Williams, Benn, and maybe even Blount (not sure on Blount because he is not a “draft pick”)
