Jameis Watch: The Shutdown

March 9th, 2015

jameis 0108Crab-legs-stealing, BB-gun-shooting, obscenity-hollering, Heisman-Trophy-winning, former national champion Jameis Winston, the pride of Florida State University, continues to look like a much better quarterback prospect than Mike Glennon and Josh McCown.

It’s Joe’s daily nugget on the Jameis Watch, celebrating the best quarterback ever to wear No. 5 in the state of Florida.

When Jameis Winston turned off his Twitter account a few days ago, Joe was waiting to see if Winston merely was in the process of changing it. Was he just switching from @JabooWins to, perhaps, @FamousJameis or @ErasingMcCownNightmare?

It turns out, Winston simply suspended the popular social media account and jumped off a train that could have derailed him if he Tweeted something stupid.

It was a wise move, and a sign of maturity. Joe’s wondering if the Bucs made the suggestion to him last week. Winston arrived in Tampa on Tuesday for a multi-day visit with Team Glazer and friends.

While ditching Twitter may seem very insignificant, and it largely is, it is a sign of maturity. Winston, one can assume, is stepping up his football focus.

Never fear, though, gawkers and stalkers can still find Winston on Instagram.

sign of maturity joe? why because someone told him to that’s mature? wow!

  3. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Now here comes the immature posters questioning Winston’s maturity any minute now…

  4. Dr. Kenneth Noisewater Says:

Very smart. Now he doesn’t have to read the constant barrage of idiotic, racist, and disgusting things written about him by internet tough guys. I don’t know how he lasted that long with an account. Personally, if I was an athlete, I wouldn’t even think about being on social media. Nothing good can come from it.

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

No Joe……it is not a sign of maturity to shut down Twitter…..are you saying the millions that use Twitter are immature….
    Maturity is using Twitter responsibly…..
This is a sign of not trusting yourself…or an advisor not trusting you…..
Now….perhaps not trusting yourself is a sign of maturity…..but I suspect this was not initiated by Winston….

  6. Nybucsfan Says:

Yea I’m sure he thought of it on his own. Here is a better idea just don’t be dumb and you can keep it. You never see guys who aren’t morons have to shut it off

  7. Erik with CleanAthletics.com Says:

    Wise words, Tbbf.

    @ Joes

Your judgement of QB’s is ridiculous…. Why the hell wouldn’t such a solid prospect like MM? Winston is such a risky option. (on AND off-the-field)

  8. Jeagan1999 Says:

I doubt “maturity” had anything to do with it. Winston’s agents probably insisted he turn off the social media until the draft so he doesn’t post anything stupid between now and then. I doubt whether Mariota’s agent had to make the same suggestion.

  9. Cannon Fire Says:

One intelligent act does not a mature person make. When he strings together multiple acts of maturity over a signifigant period of of time WITHOUT a major screw up THEN I would begin to consider that option. Besides, he IS trying to get drafted you know, it’s the least he could do. If he keeps it closed once he signs a contract I would be very, very surprised.

  10. robert 9 Says:

it won’t last long with an attention hog like him.

but yeah, i bet all the negative comments just verifies to teams that the guy is consistently disgusted by anyone but a jaboo homer.

  11. J Says:

PFT notes a new surprise San Fran departure coming. Patrick Willis to Bucs?

  12. pick6 Says:

ha, love folks getting on him pre-emptively in case it was suggested to him from an outside party. these are the same people who will fear his ability to take coaching after some other article. who cares why a 21 year old is making better decisions, as long as the change is sustainable? would it be so bad if he were further motivated to limit his liabilities in preparation for being the face of a franchise?

  13. Captain Stagger Says:

So Winston’s agent tells him to get off Twitter because he is at risk of ruining his draft stock by saying something stupid??? And that’s a move of maturity? So much fault in that logic….a sofn of maturity is keeping your Twitter account and not saying something stupid. I’m guessing this conversation hasn’t come up in the Mariota meeting rooms.

  14. mikeh Says:

@tampabaybucsfan- exactly. I would think his agent or father told him to. maybe he was getting hate mail or 87 would not leave him alone. lol but not the bucs. nice try joe!

  15. Tampabaybucfan Says:

If this is advice….it’s a double-edged sword…..Good advice because neither the advisor or Winston don’t trust his Twitter activity.
Bad advice because it shows that Winston would/can’t follow instruction/advice.
The instruction would be….don’t tweet anything stupid between now and the draft.
6 weeks of restraint can’t be trusted.

Imagine after a contract has been signed for millions…..

  16. mikeh Says:

    again I agree tbbf.

  17. Martinii Says:

I don’t know or care to know much about Twitter, but he better know how to dial 911 if the Bucs don’t get off their butts and find him an offensive line.

  18. pick6 Says:

look at this comment board. how many internet tough guys do you think troll winston daily on twitter? i’m sure it is only picking up as the draft approaches. there has not been a year-long mariotta witch hunt so i am sure his twitter feed is much tamer.

  19. bucrightoff Says:

Why would there be a Mariota witch hunt? Has he engaged in anti-social, extremely immature behaviour? Because the guy from FSU sure has, Mariota’s been a Bible Study so who cares about that?

  20. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

Lmao, 87 you yourself have said that Jameis Winston has the maturity of a 10-year old. Shutting down his social media was a mature move, but that does not make him a mature person.

It’s not the maturity I’m worried about, we all should have a sense of humor. But even a mature man can make stupid decisions.

  21. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Charles Davis just did his 3rd mock draft update.

Previously he has Winston going to the Rams.

Now he switched it back to the Bucs….

We’re getting closer people…were getting closer.

Time to come to grips fro some of you people.

  22. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

  23. robert 9 Says:

it’s kind of hard to believe with JW’s theiving, alleged raping, vandalism, disregarding police, jumping up on tables, yelling at coaches…etc, etc.. etc…

hard to believe cause he post some crap about talking to young kids or something positive…just all seems like a big ruse. no one is buying it. he just needs to STFU

and i am sure his agent told him to pull it…..cause it’s still not working.

  24. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Winston just sneezed and Robert 9 complained about it.

    87, I make some posts from 9-5 mon-friday

not a lot of room to talk.

  26. Chef Paul Says:

I signed up for instagram just to follow Winston. The comments people leave for him are worse than anything he’s ever done. The reasons for dropping twitter is all speculation. I say he’s sick of the high horse riders telling him to go hang himself.

  27. louden Says:

Off-field stuff aside, Winston is way overhype absolutely Freeman 2.0
just watch draft-breakdown the game against Notre Dame..
He is just locked on his targets and does a poor job manipulating defenses with his eyes, sth. Mariota does better.., yet,. clearly Winton is the more pro-ready (sarcasm)
    absolute BS..
just see how all those new.era kind QB went on having instant success year one..
just a matter of overall team, including coaching and all..

    Mariota over Winston any time

  28. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Robert…I don’t have to ride his jock anymore. I’m 1000% confident that he’s going to be the pick.

It’s the rest of you that are going to have to digest it and deal with it. Yet I doubt someone such as yourself will be able to deal with it. Especially after Glennon gets traded.

  29. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Louden the NFL is looking for scouts….you might want to apply.

  30. bucrightoff Says:

87’s meltdown when they take Mariota or Williams is going to crash the site most likely. It’s gonna be hilarious though

Are you saying Winston is in the same situation as the millions who use twitter that only have a few dozen followers?

Are you saying that recognizing that Tweets are often taken out of context in order to fuel the outrage cycle of the Internet and removing yourself from that potential risk in order to protect yourself and your future team is not mature?

It has nothing to do with not trusting yourself. Anyone can take anything you say and find something offensive in it. Not to mention even if he tweets something benign, he will be met with racism and people calling him a rapist, a thug, a thief, etc…

Check the replies to any tweet by anyone famous and you get a grab bag of idolatry and hate spewed at them.

Regardless of whether someone suggested it to him or not, it’s the smart thing to do. There is no benefit from someone like Winston to be on Twitter. Good for him and good for us.

  34. Tampabaybucfan Says:

“There is no benefit from someone like Winston to be on Twitter.”

    I couldn’t have said it better myself…..

  35. Edgewalker Says:

Congrats! You proved my point by taking something out on context to make a meager point. Allow me to rephrase:

There is no benefit for any professional athlete to be on Twitter. It only will lead to trouble.

  36. mikeh Says:

that’s because CHARLES DAVIS is guessing just like the rest of them. closer we get to the draft watch all the mocks change a little they always do. they are saying this team should draft this guy as a need and hear say.

  39. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @Edgewalker

Let’s see if Winston returns after the draft…..

I actually don’t disagree with you..I just don’t agree that it is a sign of Winston’s maturity…..but Twitter is a popular site for many public figures….actors, musicians, atheletes, politicians…etc.

Anthony Weiner comes to mind…..could have used your advice.

A sign of maturity would be to use social media properly. This means that he cannot trust himself to do so. Yeah, that is who I want to be the “face of the franchise”

This demonstrates a lack of awareness of what goes on in social media. He can tweet something positive, like Kapernick did and be met with trolls who speq hatred. Maybe he doesn’t want that. If so, good. That’s mature.

  41. BRoy34isdonewithMorons Says:

so is there literally anything he can do to shut you fools up?

  42. Josh P Says:

If any of you actually followed him on Twitter you would realize he really never tweeted that much anyways Nor did he ever tweet anything controversial.

  43. Josh P Says:

    @robert9

Your a** is on here Saturday and Sunday also.

  44. McBuc Says:

Maybe he simply is tired of it or sees it as a distraction. Maybe he is viewing his time like is in hunting for a job. When looking for a job you should suspend all social media. Not because you might post something stupid, but one of your mutual friends might. With Winston this is magnified even greater. Smart move, regardless of who’s idea it was. That’s why you hire an agent, for advise.

  45. ChessMaster Says:

    Twitter is stupid anyway.

  46. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

He’s so intelligent that Twitter can’t handle his great mind. Or his handlers told him to shut it down….Better to be accused of rape than dropping your drawls and proving it type thing.

  47. JFat Says:

I fall in to the “Who gives a $hit?” camp on this one. People are reading a bit too much in to this, as usual. Maybe he just got tired of Twitter and all the BS that comes with it?

Hopefully he turns it back on after the draft though, I’d like to see what he posts when he sees Mariota on stage getting a Bucs jersey.

  48. Barry Bryan Joel all agree Says:

Probably the Winstonnite inside OBP had something to do with it. But how do you think the Glazers feel about this? 7 plus Red Flags, and now him being told to shut down all social media. He’s on total lock down. Really mature of him. Joe’s in full sales mode. #GoodToBeKing

If it was a lock that Winston was coming to Tampa it wouldn’t matter what he said or did on twitter right? So now he knows and his agent knows he’s not a lock so it’s time to tighten loose ends to help secure being a top pick. This is not a sign of being mature people (get off his nuts already) it’s a sign of acknowledging by him and his agent that he is not mature and could hurt his stock if allowed to have the twitter account between now and the draft.

Nope and that’s the point there’s nothing Winston can or will do for the next 3 years that will shut them up… ALSO..there’s so many new and fake screen names in here these days it’s getting quite childish anyways.

Why bother anymore? Just wait until draft day for now and…

Post here and there until then.

@87, it’s nice that you’re 1000% confident that Winston is the pick. What we’re discussing right now is that Winston and his handlers just acknowledged that they are NOT 1000% confident he is the pick. If you know you’re a lock to be the top pick you don’t need to worry about embarrassing yourself on Twitter or anything really… Shutting down his twitter account says he and his handlers don’t trust himself from saying something stupid between now and the draft.. So even if you’re right and we draft Winston we don’t have to worry about him embarrassing our already fragile franchise until after the draft. Will he have his twitter account activated again after the draft???? I can 1000% guarantee that!

  60. bo Says:

Not sure what would melt down the folks like 87….if the Bucs don’t take him or if they do take him and he sucks….I am sure that if he sucks, 87 and his ilk will blame everyone else except Winston

  65. chris k Says:

@87, I will be at the Stadium party that night, just like last year. They doing a party at ONE BUC????? You meant stadium right? Either way we’ll catch up the day after on here and have some more fun. I’m going to the draft party with my cousin(Giants fan) my friend(Eagles fan) and my brother(Jets fan)… They all have said they’re gonna have a field day taunting me and other Bucs fans if the pick is Winston.. Lol.. Let the shame of being a Bucs fan continue!

  66. IStillbleedOrange Says:

And there I was, hoping that the title: “Jameis Watch: The Shutdown” meant that the Joes were finally ending this daily force feeding of their annual “this is who the Bucs should draft because I like him and I don’t give a (insert expletive) what anyone else says that doesn’t agree with me” crap.

Of course, this is what I get for wishful thinking. (sigh) Yet another reason for me to reflect on why I waste my free time on this site.

  67. I'm a great person Says:

I will say it again and again (and you could even simply look for the negatives about Winstons game on nfl.com) and even there, there are the Freeman traits listed..

And winston is supposed to be a pocket passer, with freeman trais??
hell i dont want that with the 1st pick.

If QB – it has to be Mariota by a long shot.

  75. bo Says:

For all of you guys with a hard on for Winston…please let me know what quarterback you compare him to going forward….Is he some combination of Peyton Manning, John Elway, Joe Montana, and Tom Brady? Is he Trent Dilfer? Is he Michael Vick? Is he Matt Ryan, Stafford, or Moore? Just want to get some idea where you project him and what year you think he will be inducted to Canton?

  76. 87ForJameisNOMariota Says:

Bo…the fire and energy of Tom Brady. The build and running ability of Big Ben.

Other than that I won’t compare him to anyone. He is who he is. Perhaps some day others might compare future QB’s to Winston.

  77. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

    1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers — Florida State QB Jameis Winston: Asking around at the combine, I couldn’t find anyone (NFL scout, analyst, etc.) who doesn’t think Winston will be the No. 1 pick to the Buccaneers. Can the Tampa coaches and front office trust Winston? That’s the only question, but the on-field talent is too good to pass up.

Lets evaluate what mikeh’s typed. A characteristic of maturity is the ability to accept and apply prudent advice. Providing that we accept the connotative definition of the word mature. I am not making the argument that Jameis Winston was told to discontinue his twitter account or accepting any statements as fact considering the issues. I really do not care one way or the other.
