Why Drool Over Chip Kelly’s Leftovers?

January 21st, 2015
If Eagles strongman Chip Kelly has no use for Nick Foles, why should the Bucs?

If Eagles strongman Chip Kelly has no use for Nick Foles, why should the Bucs?

With apologies up front, Joe doesn’t get it. Joe just doesn’t understand how too many (and one is too many, frankly) Bucs fans are pitching a tent over the (planted?) Philly media story that Chip Kelly is willing to trade half of his team to move up in the first round to snatch his former pupil, Marcus Mariota.

This ought to scare the hell out of Bucs fans.

Why? Because someone at One Buc Palace may be hatching some hare-brained scheme to bring in Nick Foles.

You have a chance to get a franchise quarterback at No. 1 and you are thinking of taking Kelly’s refuse? Do the math here. If Kelly is so hot and bothered about replacing Foles, then why on earth would the Bucs even want him?

This story sure smells like a plant to Joe. There are folks in the Bucs organization that have ties to the Northeast and likely have cell phone numbers of specific reporters.

This story just screams that whoever planted it, is trying to drive up the price of their draft slot by igniting a bidding war. Never mind Kelly would have to give away about half of his team, or throw away the team’s future, in order to trade with Tampa Bay.

What sounds more reasonable, is that Mariota will fall to, say, No. 6 or No. 7, which makes it slightly more reachable for Kelly without having to sacrifice his first-born in ransom.

Funny, Kelly had no use for Dennis Dixon, LaMichael James or DeAnthony Thomas, former Oregon stars who aren’t NFL studs.

And for the Trade-Down-and-Get-A-Quarterback-Later crowd, Pat Kirwan had this little interesting nugget yesterday on SiriusXM NFL Radio: In the last 11 years, 82 quarterbacks were drafted on the third day of the draft, rounds 4-7. Only one — one! — has a winning record. That would be Kyle Orton, with a career record of 42-40.

Essentially, those who prefer the Bucs pass on Jameis Winston simply don’t want the Bucs to make the playoffs for the next, oh, five years or so. Quick: how many garbage quarterbacks led their teams to a playoff berth this season? And yes, turnover-prone Josh McCown even makes Matthew Stafford look like Dan Fouts.

  1. OB Says:

Why don’t you start a rumor that Seattle is going to trade their entire team to the Bucs for the first choice, if you are going to be extreme go to the outer limits.

  2. Eric Says:

Chip Kelly might just end up flaming out. His team collapsed last year and now he has taken over the personnel decisions. Sounds a little like when Chucky did that here.

I’m betting in two years we will be glad we got lovie and not Chip.

As for Foles, he’s already on our roster – his name is Mike Glennon.

    Neither will do.

  3. Dewey Selomon Says:

Take Winston and don’t look back. If it doesn’t work out we lose 3 or 4 years max. At least the Glazers don’t lose $50 mil like the old CBA. I been a fan for 38 years and 3-4 years means nothing anymore to me.

  4. Another J Says:

Nick Foles will end up being like Kevin Kolb, or Matt Flynn…

  5. rayjay1122 Says:

How can anyone even take Chip Kelly serious? He did after all choose to live in Philly over Tampa. If that is not an indictment against his common sense then I do not know what is.

  6. Dean Says:

Chip Kelly knows that a franchise QB is necessary to become a really top winning organization.

In his structured offense (not anyone else’s), Mariotta is the franchise and you mortgage the future to get that man that becomes Tom Brady, etc.

So, would the ‘ol Chipper be willing to make that horrendous deal to set up HIS offense for the next 10-15 years? Absolutely.

Should the Bucs be willing to accept his castoff, backup QB and half a team in picks? Maybe. Let’s see what Dirk thinks and the rest of the braintrust (or lack of same) at One Buc Place.

  7. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    We already have Mike Glennon…

  8. Eric Says:

quote from Jameis about Wilson after the seahawks-packers game:

“Grown men compete they never give up 4ints that’s nothing it’s about that W ladies and gentlemen he is a winner and with faith anything is possible that’s why we play this game to hush all doubters and to fight with our brothers till it’s over”

Love that attitude. Gunslinger mentality. If any team ever needed it it’s is ours!

  9. tmaxcon Says:

    Draft Winston.

We have been sending our good players to playoff teams and receiving their garbage for years that cycle needs to end. Most in the name of character which is getting really silly to me at this point. It’s funny how many of those low character guys are now on winning teams some even enjoying playoff success. I am not saying we should have kept every malcontent. I will preface by saying that I commend lovie for his beliefs and principles that being said this is the real world people, it’s not perfect. You are going to have to have a couple of idiots on your roster and you must know how to deal with that. be honest, every place you have worked or owned there are always a couple of idiot employees or coworkers. Lovie needs to stop blaming character and just admit he can not judge talent and that he belongs back in the basement.

  10. JoeJoes Fungi Nails Says:

    Winston =’s Ryan Leaf
    Mariota =’s Peyton Manning

  11. Jonny 2.3 Says:

If the Eagles think Foles is disposable, we the Bucs who have been longing for a franchise QB do not need to settle with mediocrity. Glennon can be mediocre if we can offer him some help on the O-line and put up better than mediocre numbers if we get him more weapons. If we do deal with the Eagles, no thank you to even Shady McCoy, his actual value is far lesser than the hype around him. It should involve players like LT Jason Peters, RG Evan Mathis, DT Fletcher Cox, DE/OLB Connor Barwin, TE Zach Ertz, WR Jordan Rodgers etc. One or more of those players along with 3 firsts and 3 2nds.

  12. rayjay1122 Says:

    @Eric

While I agree that Winston’s statement shows his appreciation for winning and fighting to do so, the one part that alarms me is shrugging off the 4 interceptions. Since I lived in Seattle (Bellevue and Redmond) Washington for a few years, the Seahawks are my back up team after the Bucs and I was very distressed during the NFC championship game. The 4 interceptions were absolutely a big deal and it took a miracle for the Packers to piss away that game. Most games in the NFL will not end that way with a QB throwing 4 interceptions albeit a couple were tip drills and not really Wilson’s fault. Like I said, I like his spirit to win, but he needs to realize that in the NFL, ball security is a big part of obtaining that coveted win. That just seemed a little ignorant to me, but again, he is young and immature.

    Eagles: good drafting team
    Bucs: bad drafting team

Eagles: have productive QBs on roster
    Bucs: need a QB

Why would you give the Eagles an opportunity to draft the best QB in the draft when that is exactly what your team needs? Does the Bucs fanbase have no common sense? The obvious move just slapped you all in the face:

    DRAFT MARIOTA

My god we already embarrassed ourselves by drafting a poor man’s Nick Foles in the 3rd round…don’t compound that by acquiring Foles himself to upgrade on his doppelganger.

  15. Ray Rice Says:

Next thing that’s going to come out is that the YUCS are going to trade the #1 pick for Chip.

  16. rayjay1122 Says:

I do not see Winston being another Ryan Leaf. I actually believe he will grow up and get his head on straight. I have more fear that he will be another Byron Leftwich as far as his play on the field. Like I have said in the past. I just think there is something off with his game. Maybe NFL coaches can correct his flawed mechanics. As of now, I can see a lot of interceptions and tipped balls at the line of scrimmage due to his long wind up and locking in on a receiver. Just my observations and opinion though. I hope the kid succeeds regardless of where he plays at the next level. Why root for anyone to fail?

Well no matter who you are, Russell Wilson or anybody else, bad things are going to happen in NFL games.

Of course nobody wants to through INT’s, but the ability to overcome them and win is what Jameis is referring to.

Not a bit of immaturity in that.

The kind of thing a seasoned veteran would say.

  20. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

I agree. Nick Foles really isn’t anybody special. Seems like a QB we already have in Mike Glebbon. I would be more focused on O-lineman or perhaps snatch up one of Philly’s secondary along with a boatload of picks. I honestly think the Eagles are too far back though. To give up all that for one guy? It would be the trade of the century. Not happening IMO.

  21. MariotaOrWinstonOrWalkdaPlank Says:

  22. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

I wonder….if Jimbo was the coach of the Eagles what would he be willing to give up to grab Winston?

  35. pick6 Says:

87, he also has eliminated 2 of the most successful #1 picks of this generation from consideration while shifting the criteria to make sure the numbers are good and loaded in favor of his arbitrary point. QBs have gone first overall 11 of the last 20 years (9 since we apparently can’t count the mannings due to their success). 11 of the likely 200+ players who have played QB for a team in that span…,that would make up 5% of the QB population. my bet is, they’ve represented more than that proportion of playoff games started and won in that span. you’re also selling cam newton, andrew luck, and matthew stafford short, since all 3 have already won division titles and have plenty of years to go.

  38. gatrbuc17 Says:

Pick 6. This is no court of law my friend. Everything I type is within all the parameters laid out here by the owners. I see that everyone wants to knock me for my observations but they still stand true. One does NOT need a first overall pick to win SBs in this game. NEITHER one of these QBs are “Sure Fire Can’t Miss ” prospects. They both come with baggage. Anyone that thinks that we are a QB away from winning. A ROOK qb at that just plain old doesnt know football

  39. gatrbuc17 Says:

And BTW………………..ANSWER my questions before you start calling me a troll.

  40. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

Nothing but multiple (high!) draft picks over two or three years should do if there is any truth to Kelly wanting to move up. As for the Mariota must be great if Kelly wants him line of thinking…let’s be realistic. Mariota might be the perfect QB to succeed in Kelly’s offense, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best fit for Koetter’s. I for one hope it is true and even if Philly can only get up to 5-10 in this year’s draft by trading players to another team I’d still take a three year multi pick deal and draft BPA OT, DE, or DT (unless Winston falls into that range at which time I’d at least consider rolling the dice or trading down again for more first round picks). I keep harping on Hackenberg out of Penn State, but that kid has franchise QB written all over him…use the multiple picks next year to swing a deal for him and bolster both lines this year and the Bucs are built to win!

  41. pick6 Says:

sorry, i should say “salient” not “factual”. the statement that outside of the manning brothers, very few #1 overall picks (since troy aikman and elway walked away with 5 superbowls between them) not named manning have played in or won superbowls is a factual one. however, it does little to inform a team on what to do with these 2 players. that logic floats when jamarcus russell is the #1 pick and it sinks like a stone when andrew luck is the guy. it is not about history or percentages, it is about the 2 guys you are evaluating.

  42. gatrbuc17 Says:

Factual Point……………….Both of these QBs have issues
Factual Point……………….This team is at least 2 or 3 yrs from being a contender
There does that make mr Pick6 feel better about my posts????

  43. pick6 Says:

gatrbuc, if you are so interested in the answer to your question, i suggest you educate the rest of us by posting it. clearly you’ve done enough homework to form an opinion, i’d like you to share it. no it isn’t a court of law but you still have to use valid arguments if you expect to represent your point of view with credibility. your observations on the bust rate of 1st rounders and #1 overall QBs, for example, would be undermined greatly if it turned out that QBs picked in later rounds had an even lower chance of having a successful NFL career. if the objective of the organization is to get the type of QB they have never had in their history, that’s an important piece of information.

  44. gatrbuc17 Says:

The Bottom line is we could have only won maybe 6 or 7 games this yr with Aaron Rodgers behind our OL. I would rather see the line built from the draft. Yes QBs especially high profile QBs energize fan bases but don’t win games right off. We won the SB with Brad Freakin Johnson for Chrissakes. What was he a 9th round pick? We need a GB type OL and we can win

  48. pick6 Says:

gatrbuc, i’m curious how you think we should address the QB situation. in the 20 or so years i have been a bucs fan, i have heard the team and fans rationalize, almost every year, that we have a better shot at the type of QB we want\need next year, or that shaun king\chris simms\bruce gradkowski can be “good enough” with the right players around them. tom brady, russell wilson, and tony romo are the exception and not the rule. if folks knew the kind of player they were coming out of school, they would have been #1 overall or close to it in their respective drafts.

  49. gatrbuc17 Says:

Eric I had said the last 20 QBs.

  50. Dave Pear Says:

Glad we have Lovie over Kelly? That’s funny!

The Bucs got left at the alter again because an offensive innovator wouldn’t tolerate JTF as his franchise QB.

Meanwhile, Lovie, a journeyman HC ruled by his antiquated dogma, served up a steaming plate of McCown.

Kelly knows touchdowns are better then waiting for points off of turnovers.

Kelly knows a franchise QB is the way to win it all. Lovie doesn’t. Glad the Glazers are going to be calling out first pick.

  54. 87ForJameisNoMariota Says:

  55. Jack Says:

The best Philly trade rumor I have seen involves trading picks and not personnel. This way the BUCS get a QB and some other picks and Philly gets their QB.

  56. Eric Says:

Eli Manning was also first overall. As was his brother. Jim Plunkett also.

That brings the total to 15 Super Bowl Champions with the number one pick in the draft at QB.

As far as first round draft choices at QB. 27 times the Super Bowl Champion has been quarterbacked by a first round draft choice.

    that is well over 50%.

  57. CS Says:

I love foles largely because I’m an Arizona fan, but I certainly wouldn’t give up a 1st pick for him. Maybe for somebody like Aaron Rodgers but that would never happen anyways

  58. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Even after Drew Brees made the Pro Bowl in 2004. Offensive Coordinator Cam Cameron, didn’t think Brees was a good fit. For his version of the Air Coryell offense; so they drafted Phillip Rivers.

No biggie, Sean Payton thought he was a great fit for his version of the West Coast offense. One mans trash, another’s treasure…Such is life

“One mans trash, another’s treasure…Such is life.”

LOL Luv…McCown comes to mind…oh wait.

  60. Skyline Crew for Mariota or Winston Says:

Foles doesn’t really fit into Kelly’s system up there. He won them games, but he just wasn’t mobile enough. Sanchez was awful up there as well. Obviously a big strong mobile QB is what Kelly is looking for and there aren’t really in FA. It is plausible for him to want to get Mariota, but I don’t think that will ever come to be. He would have to give up to much and in the end giving up certain players wouldn’t be good in the long run. Now if he gave up Sanchez to move up the first time and Foles to move up the 2nd time I could see that. I wouldn’t want Foles though as he isn’t all that accurate. He can definitely sling the ball, but just throws to many interceptions for my liking.

  61. Eric Says:

Easy to blame Lovie for McCown.

But the only other available FA QB was Vick, who fared no better.

  62. flmike Says:

Kelly has stated he thinks the draft is the worst crap shoot ever, if he has his heart set on Mariota and is willing to trade his draft class for him, let him. It may take a few moves for him to get down to the number one pick from where he sits now, but if he’s willing to give up multiple picks and it still puts the Bucs in a position (say number 2 or 3) to get WInston, then do it, don’t let those picks who can help rebuild this franchise go to the Titans who have let it leak they are interested in Williams and not in Winston (smoke screen? maybe?).

  63. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If he can grab boat load of drafted picks, a Quality Vet or 2 , and a Pro Bowl QB…WHY NOT DO THE TRADE?

  64. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If we can grab boat load of draft picks, a Quality Vet or 2

….and a Pro Bowl QB…WHY NOT DO THE TRADE?

  65. Jeagan1999 Says:

This choice is so important for the Bucs. The history of the Draft shows that choosing a QB in the first round is a crap shoot at best. Since 1999 (the last 15 drafts) 45 QB’s were chosen in the first round and only 17 of have gone on to have any kind of real success in the NFL ( guys like Mike Vick, Chad Pennington, Carson Palmer, Eli, Philip Rivers, Big Ben, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan, Joe Flacco, Cam Newton, Andres Luck). 7 of them are incomplete because they were chosen in the last 2 years ( I.e. Tannehil, EJ Manuel, RGIII, Bortles, Bridgewater, etc…). That leaves 21 AB’s taken in the first round that had very little success in the league….Tim Couch, Joey Harrington, Akili Smith, Kyle Boller, J.P. Loseman, Matt Leinart, Jamarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Sam Bradford, Josh Freeman, Tim Tebow, Jake Locker, Blaine Gabbert etc… If the Bucs do not feel strongly about either Mariota or Winston, trading out and waiting until next year might be something to think about. In looking at this list it also struck me at how often some teams chose a Bad QB and then another one a few years later….Cleveland, Oakland, Arizona, etc…all missed on QB’s multiple times. Let’s hope that Freeman is the ONLY bad QB the Bucs choose in the first round!

  66. Mr. Patrick Says:

I really don’t think that the Bucs will trade out of the #1 spot because I think Lovie will fall in love with Leonard Williams, who is the comnsensus best player in the draft. If they do insist on a QB, then I hope it’s Mariota because Winston is a total crapshoot who could possibly cause the Bucs Franchise a lot of future embarrassment

  67. David Says:

    Mariota!

  68. David Says:

No Trading Down for Glennon 2.0 etc., No Winston/King/Leftwich/Rapelisberger or whatever you want to call him either! Draft Mariota! Period!

  69. Tom Says:

As Joe likes to say regarding these stories leading up to the draft, this is all a smokescreen. Chip is just trying to help out the draft stock of his old QB Mariota since it appears he’s falling pretty fast

  70. Jason Licht Says:

  75. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Jason Licht (JBF version)

Again Mariota is a perfect match for Kelly’s offensive scheme but maybe not so perfect for ours. That’s not saying he can’t develop into a great Bucs QB, but he could most likely step into the starting role in Philly and be the offensive rookie of the year (perfect marriage of player, coach, and system). I personally think there is some truth to the rumor of Philly looking to trade with us, but the bummer is I doubt it will be as much compensation as the Rams got from the RG3 deal even with the further jump up. My opinion only, but GM’s have seen the havoc giving up 3 round 1 picks and missing on that #1 pick has caused the Redskins and most likely won’t risk that kind of long term future assets on any player ever again.

    Fuhgedaboudit!

The ONLY move the Bucs should make (short of trading down for a literal King’s ransom) –

IS TO DRAFT JAMEIS WINSTON!!!! Draft Winston and don’t look back. Then draft at least 2 OLinemen in rounds 2>4.

THIS is what will bring the Buccaneers long term success.

Winston is the best QB to come out in the last 3 years – and it ain’t even close. Those who disagree with that statement did not watch many FSU games the last 2 years.

Mariota is also a very good College QB who is extremely athletic and capable of making big plays with his feet – but the risk that he will not be able to transition well to the NFL and or/get hurt a lot if he tries to run around too much is VERY real.

  78. LUVMYBUCS Says:

If you really want to make things interesting, and push their hand. Hire Scott Frost as the New QB Coach.

  79. Rob Says:

Seriously… if Chip Kelly is such a genius why would you take the QB he doesn’t want, and let him have the QB that he does want?

  80. Mike10 Says:

@ least we know Foles knows how to win at Raymond James

  81. ToesOnTheLine! Says:

    @ Rob

Simple the guy he wants (Mariota) fits HIS system perfect and the guy he supposedly doesn’t want doesn’t (fit as well anyway).

  82. FuNkYxMuNkEy Says:

Joe this is one of your worst articles ever. Philly runs a system all their own. The fact Chip doesn’t want Foles there has no relevance to his talents as a QB. He is a pocket QB with a great arm. Chip wants the mobile QB who he has known since the kid was 16 years old.

IF ANYTHING this should show just how good Mariotta is. The guy is willing to give up everything to get him. You don’t do that for a junk player. I am so confused with you people…

AND, Philly didn’t “flame out” quoting ERIC, until Foles got hurt and they started playing Sanchez. Foles is a proven QB with the 2nd best season a QB has ever had in the NFL. Nonsense people…F’n nonsense

  83. Rob Says:

“Simple the guy he wants (Mariota) fits HIS system perfect and the guy he supposedly doesn’t want doesn’t (fit as well anyway).”

He fit it to the tune of 27 TD’s and 2 INT’s last year.

If we’re talking about systems, Foles excelled in Kelly’s system. People who don’t want Mariota say that the Bucs shouldn’t draft him because he was great in a spread offense.

Why would you want Nick Foles then, who only excelled in a spread offense?

See my point? It’s the same scenario. So if you want Foles, why wouldn’t you want Mariota? Mariota’s the superior prospect and Chip Kelly knows it.

If he wants Mariota, then he doesn’t have to bother climbing all the way to #1 to get him. A trade between the Bucs and Philly is ludicrous.
