Cousins Working As First-Team Left Tackle

October 30th, 2014

CousinsWhat was an August nightmare for Bucs fans looks like it could become a November reality on Sunday.

The projected starting right guard this offseason, veteran free agent pickup Oniel Cousins, was dreadful in preseason and was buried on the bench behind Patrick Omameh and Garrett Gilkey.

Now, per the afternoon Twitterings of Bucs beat writers, Cousins is working in practice as the first-team left tackle, filling in for Anthony Collins who is nursing swollen buttocks a bad foot. Collins hasn’t practiced this week after a very rough day against the Vikings and Everson Griffen.

This is certainly a troubling development. If Cousins plays, Joe has no idea what to expect, other than former Bucs coaching intern and glory days defensive end Steve White won’t be watching.

Boy Cousins is one of the biggest turnstiles in the league. I think week 1 last year for the Browns he allowed like 4 sacks. Somehow, this unbelievably bad line might get worse

  2. RastaMon Says:

Oh..geeshh…another zit on this pus pile….

  3. "TheKevin" Says:

This is the new starting tackle and everyone is screaming to get a qb first in the draft lmao.

    Idiots. Every single one!!!

  4. "TheKevin" Says:

Might as well re-sign demps and let him play qb because you will not get half a second to throw. Just running for your life.

But yea lets get a rookie qb first pick and watch him get blasted and buried on every play lmao.

If they get a qb first pick that mother f**er better be able to run like the wind!!!!

  5. Lynch Says:

Glennon should definitely ask for Sunday off now!

  6. DB55 Says:

I can’t watch this garbage. Cousins? Lovie really hates the schiano men. He must! No other explanation.

  7. HawaiianBuc Says:

Capt. Tim is going to have an aneurism when he sees this, lol. I have a sneaky suspicion Glennon and McCown may play rock scissors paper to see who DOESN’T start Sunday.

  8. HawaiianBuc Says:

Maybe Cousins skill set is best suited for left tackle instead of guard. Those are very different positions and he could end up being a stud left tackle.

  10. HawaiianBuc Says:

Nah, I’m just messing with you guys, this is going to be a disaster.

  11. Cali Buc Fan Says:

Browns set NFL record for QB hits and sacks in a game.

  12. Piratic Says:

Start McCown. Please. Glennon might never recover from a start at LT by Cousins.

  13. Newbucsfan!!! Says:

start those rookies they are learning nothing from the scrubs in front of them except that they don’t want to play like them. Well maybe they are learning something.

  14. biff barker Says:

The offensive greatness of Lovie and Warhop.

  15. HawaiianBuc Says:

    @”TheKevin”

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think we can get rid of Cousins next year without a HUGE cap hit. That’s probably going to eliminate us from drafting a LT even if we want to. But for the record, Mariota can run like the wind.

  16. Buccfan37 Says:

Big Frank Zappa fan, “What’s the ugliest part of your body? Some say your nose, some say your toes, but I think it’s your mind.”

  17. biff barker Says:

Collins, Cousins, Michael Johnson…… Warhop too, yup, Cincinnati sent the whole dumpster full.

  18. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

Cousins is probably looking GREAT in practice. Of course, look who he is going up against in practice…LMFFAO!

  19. HawaiianBuc Says:

Warhop is from Cleveland. He coached 2 Pro Bowlers on his line last year. He’s coached in the NFL for 20 years straight. I really don’t think he’s the problem.

Did you watch the Knicks play last night? They run the triangle offense just like the Bulls and Lakers did. They lost by about 30. Do you blame the coach for not coaching the triangle correctly, or could it be because they have crap for players?

  20. Espo Says:

This is because some A hole on the airwaves (Mark Ryan) said “it can’t get any worse.” I’m not a superstitious guy but I knew then he set us up for something terrible. This is worse than Freeman. This is worse than losing Tedford. This is worse than Mrsa. This is worse than Ebola. This is worse than me exaggerating how bad this is.

  21. HawaiianBuc Says:

    ^LMAO

  22. Buctebow Says:

Tell Melman not to eat pancakes for breakfast on Sunday, he’ll get plenty in the game.

  23. Touch_Down_Tampa_Bay Says:

Oh Boy… this will be ugly. In honor of Halloween we might have to call this game the massacre in Cleveland. Glennon will probably start but do to injury we will see McCown in the 2nd quarter.

I only watched the 1st half of the Atlanta game. Hopefully, I will not have to go through that again.

  24. RastaMon Says:

Johnny Boy will get his first playing time….kinda like a lioness dragging in a half kill for her cubs to toy with before the kill

  25. billy buckaroo Says:

Anybody remember that we drafted two offense lineman this year?
    Seems like we did?
    Maybe I was wrong

  26. Bucfan4life Says:

Hey TheKevin the Bucs will be starting from rock bottom as soon as this season ends. This team needs a total rebuild and needs approximately 17 -18 new players. That will not be solved in one draft. Every great team needs a great QB. Assuming this train wreck continues the Bucs will have a top 3 pick and most likely will have their choice of QBs as the Jags and Raiders won’t be taking one. If management feels that next years QB crop has a franchise guy they need to take him. He can sit behind Glennon or McCown for a year or two while the Bucs try and build an offensive and defensive line. I think the Bucs will have a few more years of top 5 picks and they need to use one of them to find the right QB. Personally as dumb as Winston is I think he has the most upside and they need to at least consider taking him or Mariotta.

  27. RastaMon Says:

Every single player on the 53 has NFL talent….t is coaching….leadership…Lovie is an empty suit….and none of his staff can do anything about it, without risking a coaching future in the NFL…The Glazers need to FIRE Lovie soon !

  28. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I just hope the Bucs have been practicing draw plays and screen passes because there is no way our OL even slows the Brown’s rush much less contains it.

  29. RastaMon Says:

A Draw or a screen requires the OL to hold their blocks….for a typical deeper developing play…allowing the rush in…after a delay…..all we see is our OL getting rolled back and into themselves in total collapse….nothing works out of that….

  30. "TheKevin" Says:

    @bucfanforlife

Hey I understand we need a stud franchise qb I get that.

BUT we all know it’s a crap shoot and most don’t pan out. The bucs have so many issues. i just don’t think things are set up properly right now for any qb to be successful here. The minds of rookie qb’s are fragile and with this o-line a new rookie qb is just being set up to fail. Have to have an o-line, give a franchise qb a little time and he can build some confidence. Right now it’s a disaster waiting to happen.

  31. Dom is gone Says:

Lovie should be fired over the o line alone, not to mention worst D in the league.

  32. "TheKevin" Says:

    @bucfanforlife

You make an interesting point. IF they draft a “franchise” qb and they let him sit for a year or two as they build a competent o-line then that makes sense and we can have a conversation about that.

But if they draft a qb and plan to start him opening day then it’s tee off time for opposing defenses.

Unless ofcourse this franchise qb is manning like or Andrew luck like which are very few and far between.

  33. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Oh what do you guys know… you all said Barron was solid and Cousins is terrible. Well it looks like Lovie didn’t want Barron and now entrusts Cousins to step in.

I think I will go with Lovie Smith’s judgement over the rest of you commenters. Lovie KNOWS what he is doing.

LOL… that pov doesn’t work like it used to 7 weeks ago.

  34. iamkingsu Says:

Lovie brought in basically a whole new football team and seems like we need a whole new football team

  35. Buc Fan #237 Says:

Yep… out with Zuttah, Penn, Davin Joseph, Barron… in with wtf????

  36. BucsQcCity Says:

Were really aiming for the 1st pick

  37. JJV Says:

Don’t be so hard on Cousins. He fits in just fine with this fine O-line Lovie has assembled. It took Lovie a year off in his basement to plan all this Now his team is in the basement. So everything is going according to plan. Rest easy fans, all is well. It’s as simple as that.

  38. Gt40bear Says:

Really, how much worse can he be than Turnstile Collins?

  39. Owlykat Says:

If WarFLOP had a brain he would move his RT to LT and play Johnson at RT but he is ruining our OL trying to play his Brown’s rejects. He is an idiot and needs to be fired!!!

  40. FanOfBucs Says:

    Cousins at LT… F!

Between Cousins and Collins manning LT, we should expect an early pick of LT in draft.

Cut cousins. Move Collins to guard.

  41. Delson Says:

This years draft we could be setting up to take a de first. That’s my opinion. Clayborn is underperforming again. Bowers is a no show. Gholston should be getting the majority of the starts for now. Johnson is waste but we are stuck with his contract. Spence needs to come alive in the middle at least in the run game. Also if we do take qb I hope its mariota this year would be the year we have to seriously take one. We will be somewhere in the top 5 n the teams in the bottom have their future qbs. O line can be picked up in the 2nd round in either scenario. But I gotta ask this question.. besides David who else plays lb? Wheel n deal to trade the late rounds for a second 2nd round pick.

  42. Capt.Tim Says:

Wow! I think Cleveland ought to send us all free Browns Jerseys!
When we draft bad players, or give out bad money contracts- we can only dump our mistakes at a high price.

Drafting Barron( a Safety that can’t cover anyone- lol), we spent a high 1st round pick- and could only recoup a 4th and 5th rounder. – a pretty bad Pick loss.

Not Cleveland. Bad player with big contract?
No problem- just slide that crap between two slices of bread- and feed it to Tampa! They’ll eat it with a smile!!
And It seems Cinninnati pulled the same stutter, with our Statuesque DE!
What did we ever do to Ohio??

Poor Glenon!! If the talentless cousins replaces the not Very talented Collins- then poor Mike will end up eating more grass than a cattle herd on Sunday.

And Krueger is jumping up and down to get here.

That’s a 3x Cleveland. Um, better go 4x. Gonna take a lotta beer to wash this game away!

  43. Capt.Tim Says:

    Hawaiian- spot on again!
Every time I read some outlandish nonsense- like Oniel stepping in a football field, in Buc attire- as a starter!!!
The whole world goes grey, and I stumble around like I just caught a knockout shot from Johnny “Bones” Jones!

May be the first guy to get a concussion- just from shock over team mistakes!!

It’s appropriate, that I read Cousins may Play, on Halloween! Nothing scarier than that!!! Brrrr!

    Happy Halloween all.
Sorry your Halloween has to last thru Sunday, Mike. We’ll all be scared for you!!

  44. pick6 Says:

are we really sure he’s worse than collins?

  45. PhillyBuc Says:

    Cousins starting?! Lord help us
