Lavonte David No. 7

Joe knows it really irritates many Bucs fans that stud linebacker Lavonte David got snubbed for the Pro Bowl last year. Joe doesn’t give a damn about the Pro Bowl at all, but still, it was an embarrassing omission.

It was such a slap in the face, it seems as if national NFL types have sort of used David’s slight as a crusade to not let this happen again.

Take Nick Kostos of Bleacher Report, for example. Kostos, also the executive producer of “Schein on Sports,” hosted by fan favorite Adam Schein, heard on Mad Dog Radio, part of the family of sports networks exclusively found on SiriusXM Radio, claims such a terrible swing-and-miss for David should not happen again.

Last season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Lavonte David didn’t make the Pro Bowl, which would be like Iggy Azalea being snubbed from a party for the hottest women alive.

David (who was named first-team All Pro) has been celestial for Tampa Bay since being selected in the second round of the 2012 draft. He’s garnered nine sacks and intercepted six passes to go along with 284 tackles, a preposterous number for a second-year player.

With the arrival of new coach Lovie Smith, the Buccaneers are transitioning to the Tampa 2 defensive scheme, and David will be a key cog in the machine. His ability to both stop the run and drop back in coverage will be on full display. And the smart money is that the Pro Bowl voters will have no choice but to send David to Hawaii come next February.

Part of the reason David was snubbed was that, well, sadly, too many thought of David for that bonehead play against the Jets, which is really a shame.

It also didn’t help that David has never played for an NFL winner. If that changes this year, especially with Lovie Smith being the Bucs coach, David will be known for the incredible linebacker that he truly is, not for a fluke play made in New York.

The REAL reason is that the fans vote on the pro bowl. It has removed all credibility. The Pro Bowl is supposed to consist of the best players. Instead, it is made up of the most popular.

It should be changed to stat requirements and production. Take the human element out of the voting.

And, for God’s sake, get rid of this Probowl draft crap. I have not watched it since. What is the point?

Before I watched to see if the NFC won over the AFC. It made it competitive. Now it is just a show.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Fans mostly vote on their favorite players, who play for their favorite teams.

  4. INDYbucsfan Says:

This lost all credibility when he said iggy azalea. That girl is nasty, without make up she is downright scary looking.

  5. Buccfan37 Says:

I’m still not accepting the penalty for pushing the player out of bounds in the Jets game. David made initial contact before the player touched the sideline, in my view. A New York homer call stole that win from the Bucs.

  6. DallasBuc Says:

He played on a bad team and a bad defense so fewer people pay attention. We know how great a playerhe is because we watch him every game and can see that he is usually the best player on the field when he is out there. It’s just hard for others to notice when you go 4-12. Hopefully that changes in Lovie’s defense.

Indy. So are 97% of women out there. Lol. Not many women have that natural beauty without some form of war paint plastered all over their face lol.

  8. Nick Says:

The most asinine part in all of this is that in a game that only allows a 4-3 Base, they overwhelmingly vote in 3-4 backers who do nothing but rush the passer.

  9. DallasBuc Says:

    Nick- good point!

This is a prime example of the complete lack of knowledge of the sport shown by the national pen and mic members. 11 different teams played the Bucs last year and saw him play, four of them twice and he was snubbed. I guess that for the most part professionalism is gone in the reporting business. At least you keep up with their opponents and think up your chosen names for them.

  11. T-DUB Says:

Another Bucs player whos action speaks on the field, and not his mouth!

Those are the true players of the game and that’s why he’s one of the best.

Our team deserves him and we need to pay him right behind GMC.

And that’s why i have his jersey!

  12. Nick Says:

Call it a “senior moment” but what is the implication of David being “7”?

  13. Ole Bill Says:

Her name is Icky Azalea well because she’s icky of course…

  14. StPeteBucsFan Says:

I certainly accept all the points made by Joe and the commenters. BucBonzai nailed why I don’t really give a crap.

The “all star” teams picked by fans in any sport always reflect popularity way more than talent. Worse than that they also reflect population. A player in New York or Boston has a far better chance simply because there are far more people living in those areas, more fans to vote for their faves.

This is what makes me sick when I hear radio talk show hosts or an Ex Mayor of St. Pete talk about the Rays making St. Pete a “major league city”. How bogus is that? “Major League” cities are a reflection of simple market size, not because of super cool fans or a great mayor.

St. Pete got the Rays, Tampa got the Bucs and Lightning because collectively WE ALL comprise the 13th largest metro. Not St. Pete, Not Tampa and not Clearwater but all of us including Brandon, Plant City, Sarasota etc.

A “Major League” city is simply one that is largest enough to support the business of the sport being played.

Does that makes us minor league city because we don’t support baseball?
We certainly have supported the Bucs well in the past and are currently and have historically supported the Lightning. Perhaps it’s the product. MLB has taken an already anachronistic sport that takes forever to play and put even more filler in their product until the games last forever!!!

Such a big deal was made, by even the Bucs media, about that play in week 1. It was close. It wasn’t some ridiculously dumb move. Anyone bashing David for that then or now is the bonehead.

  16. biff barker Says:

Might as well blame this on Schiano too. All NFL fans hated him.

  17. Champ Says:

This is a joke? I had to google “Iggy Azalea” and this is it: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b0/Iggy_Azalea_Walks_the_Red_Carpet_(cropped).jpg

If David ranks as a football player in any way to where this person ranks as a “hot woman” then I have to belive this guy is insulting our guy.

  18. ALEXSTOTLE Says:

    So he is 7 what???

  19. Dewey Selmon Says:

Without #54 play vs the Jets and Ryan Lindell’s kicking, Schiano might still be coach. And i would not be as excited about this season starting. Thank You Mr. David for that outstanding play which we all know was bogus to begin with.

I’m with you about that call but, maybe, for a different reason. In the first half, the Jets QB scrambled to the far sideline and was headed out-of-bounds. The on-coming Buc defenders pulled up and the QB turned upfield, netting another couple of yards (I believe a first down was achieved). After that, IMO, a close call should be judged in favor of the defense. Had the QB gone straight out earlier, then a close play favors the QB.
I have NEVER felt that David deserved that flag.

  21. cmurda Says:

The quote was going good until serenading Iggy Azalea in the hottest women alive category. Look at Rachel Watson, then Iggy and please tell me that there aren’t at least 1000 women in between that are hotter than Iggy.

I digress. Lavonte makes the probowl or we as Bucs fans throw in to fly him personally there. That was ridiculous.

  22. Bucfever40 Says:

Also Hawk, it didn’t help matters that Gino Smith after being lightly “tapped”, did a Rodney Marsh and played the refs by tumbling like he was hit full force.

Not that I blame him as it basically won the game, but that was a bit obvious imo.

  23. Louis Friend Says:

If David doesn’t get hit with that penalty – things may have gone differently last year. And Schiano might still be coach. It’s crazy enough in football to say that one bad flag set the stage for an incredibly wacky year. Had they won that game, maybe the team doesn’t implode quite as quickly and they pull out the Arizona game, and history would look a lot different.

  24. Nick Says:

Still have no idea what “No. 7” means.

  25. feelthepewterpower Says:

Lavonte is #54 šŸ™‚ Bonehead play? I hate to see anyone get fired, but David might of saved the franchise on that play šŸ˜‰ Might turn-out to be the smartest play looking back…
