Keeping Darrelle Revis

March 11th, 2014

darrelle revis 1210

Last night when news started with embers that the Bucs were shopping Darrelle Revis , then moved to the bonfire that was the Bucs were planning to toss Revis in a ditch come 4 p.m. Wednesday, Joe went from being sick to his stomach to wanting to jump out the window.

Joe simply cannot comprehend, not long after watching that eyerake of pass defense in 2012, one of the worst in NFL history, that the Bucs would throw aside at worst the second-best corner in the NFL.

Well, yes, the Bucs would do this to save 2014 cap money, but damnit, there are lesser players on the Bucs roster who could be painlessly dismissed and accomplish the same goal.

Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune claims the Bucs do have options to keep Revis and save cap cash.

By turning Revis’ salary into a signing bonus, the Bucs would be able to prorate that amount over the final five years of the deal, thereby saving them about $9 million on the cap for this year.

The Bucs are actively trying to restructure Revis’s contract but are making little headway, so they are also fielding offers for a possible trade.

Revis is due a $1.5 million roster bonus before the end of the week, so a conclusion to this matter should come shortly. But there is a way for it to end with the Bucs reducing their immediate financial commitment to Revis. It could even come as soon as today, but clearly the Bucs have some options here.

Joe sure hopes cooler heads prevail at One Buc Palace. That’s one helluva hole the Bucs will be trying to fill if they turn Revis loose. A crater in fact. Just the thought of cutting the guy makes Joe want to heave.

First the new uniforms and now Revis being cut? Sounds like someone has a nice chunk of stock in Bristol-Meyers Squibb.

We were 4-12 with a 16 million dollar-a-year corner on the roster. That is just retarded.

  2. Mazz Says:

Worse trade in sports history if Bucs release Revis. 1st rounder, 4th rounder, 16 million for one year of a 4-12 season. Gotta love it..

  3. Patrick in VA Says:

Is there a chance that the talk of cutting him if not traded might have been used to ratchet up the intensity on potential trade partners when their intention was to actually see if they can land an awesome deal and, if not, restructure the deal to allow for the situation you listed above?

I don’t know that it is as black and white as it has been reported to be

  4. snook Says:

This shouldve been added to the original news release. This caveat in his contract is the reason he won’t be released.

  5. Broy3434 Says:

They’re looking at a fan base giving u if his 16 mill doesn’t turn into Tillman AND Verner. They better spend all that money with the cap inflation next two years

  6. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I gotta tell you joe, I can’t be more excited for Today! right now the only thing that would top all the excitement is if Licht emailed every team the Bucs roster and said other than McCoy and David give me your best offer on all the others.
Its time to build an NFL roster for the Bucs

Its a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!!!!
    Go Bucs!!!!

  7. Chris Says:

Listen to Shaun king joe. They do that then his salary increases to 18.4 mm in 2015. Do your research.

  8. Leon Says:

please Lovie fix this and keep a legend!

  9. pick6 Says:

i’m earnestly hoping this is just posturing to push revis to take, say $12 million\year in a long term deal. the point of shopping him in trade and having a bunch of people say we can’t afford him, i hope, is to prove to darelle that this salary is not available to him from an NFL team. but now we have $24 million guaranteed to a DE whose best year outside of 2012 was worse than Adrian Clayborn’s rookie campaign, and in one fell swoop used up a third of our free cap space

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

“By turning Revis’ salary into a signing bonus, the Bucs would be able to prorate that amount over the final five years of the deal, thereby saving them about $9 million on the cap for this year.”

That would be a HUGE mistake. By doing that, he would cost more than $16 million per year starting next year.

Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but if they do as suggested above, that would create $1.8 million of dead money per year IF the Bucs cut him next year? Or would it be more?

  11. ander Says:

joe preach im with you i honestly dont get it

  12. BucfaninMi Says:

Get something for him! Damn! Let him walk and he goes to a division rival!! Stupid!

  13. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Yes Lovie, fix this mess and BE a Legend!!!!!! trade revis to cleveland for there second round a pick based on play for next year!!!!

Its a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!!!!
    Go Bucs!!!!

  14. theDON Says:

Glennon MOb, i am in agreeance. My lasting image was of revis getting toasted against new orleans.

  15. unbelievable Says:

@Patrick in VA, The more I think about it, the more I believe (and hope) this is what is really going on. They want to restructure him, and since they are not making progress, they are fielding trade offers to see what’s out there, as well as saying they could release him, so he sees what his actual value is and will agree to restructure with the Bucs for just a few mil less per year.

Then again, Revis has been known to holdout in the past— and this was my biggest hesitation to signing him (besides the multiple draft picks we gave up). Next 24 hours should be pretty interesting.

  16. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

This might be the precursor to that 50% roster turnover. Licht needs $ and hopefully more picks to get rid of some of Dominick’s genius (read: dummy) moves.

    Realist/Lightning Mob!

  17. rayjay1122 Says:

Yep…Revis is the blame for the 4-12 season. Really??? Explain the logic please. I guess since LTD cost us the game against the Jets we should trade or release him too with that line of thinking. I think a lot of people who think that way are knowledgeable but there is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit but wisdom is knowing not to put a tomato in a fruit salad.

  18. rayjay1122 Says:

NOT LTD…LVD. AUTO CORRECT. GOTTA LOVE IT.

  19. Orca Says:

For all the holes the Bucs need to fill on offense and with the pass rush, that 16 million of cap space might be more wisely allocated elsewhere. It’s nice to have Revis, but it may be a luxury they can’t afford…

Also, the whole idea of pushing money into the future just means causing more pain in the future. Not only would they have to eventually cut him next year or the year after, but they’d end up with a sh*tload of dead cap space in doing so. It makes ZERO sense to take unguaranteed money and convert it into guarantees for a player that is already eating like 12% of the cap.

Dominik made a desperation move in signing Revis. Now the Bucs are left to deal with it. Building a team isn’t about dropping a bunch of stars into a puddle of mediocrity. Dominik left this team with a talent deficit at too many positions, and now Lovie/Licht have to scramble to fill holes.

  20. Harry Says:

I think you all are crazy. To get an semi average CB will cost $10M+/-. There is so much you can do defensively if you can take away the other teams #1WR – If you have a pass rush.

Funny how so many Buc fans will give MG8 all the excuses in the world. But Revis being not being 100% last year and having NO pass rush and you want to run him out of town. AND HE STILL MADE THE PRO BOWL! The double standard is crazy

  21. Harry Says:

You still have to fill his spot ppl. That will cost a draft pick or signing a $10M FA. You are NOT saving $16M, only saving about $6M and have a lesser player to show for it.

  22. Macabee Says:

The unilateral restructure with dead money has always been an option and the Bucs haven’t needed Revis ok to do that. Where they are not making progress and Revis is not agreeing is to take less money.

The Bucs are trying to get value here even to the point of trading Revis for picks and/or personnel. The threat to cut Revis outright may be veiled operating on the assumption that Revis knows that he’s going to have to renegotiate anyway even if he hits the open market.

What Cummings is talking about has always been an option and is still an option until Revis is due his roster bonus which I think is Wednesday at 4:00pm. I don’t think Revis is going to cave and I don’t think the Bucs are bluffing. They will trade him or if all else fails cut him by that deadline!

  23. BucsfanNJ Says:

Patrick Va…. I agree with your opinion, perhaps this “to the browns” trade talk is a tactic being used to convince Revis to say “OK OK OK I’ll restructure just please for the love of God don’t send me to the browns!!!”

  24. Geno714 Says:

Whatever happened to the Bucs extra cap money that was supposedly rolled over from the past few years since they were always so far under the cap? I never hear anyone mention that, and I don’t understand how the cap issue can be that bad.

  25. delson Says:

I agree with harry. We will overpay regardless

  26. Macabee Says:

Revis has become the hottest commodity in FA. Somebody, like the Bucs last year is going to go all in on some kind of trade.

If Revis is not careful, he is going to be traded to some hell hole like the Raiders who are flush with cap space and can easily do this deal. Revis should be cooperating with the Bucs and a team of choice that has a chance of getting a ring and he might enjoy playing for.

This need not be a travesty, but calmer heads need to prevail so there is some semblance of win win win for all parties involved when this is all said and done!

  27. buccanAy Says:

well..I’ll try to help you Joe. In this style of defense(tampa 2), and any defense, for that matter, each position has a value. I’d say the Tampa2 puts priority on DT(3 tec), weakside LB, pass rush DE, SS, MLB, then towards the end of the value chart for this d, would be the CBposition. If Smith and Frazier are gonna run the D, they’ve run their entire carreer, with good success, they cant be paying a CB 16 million per year.

  28. Ladyfan Says:

Joe, when you puke leave room on the floor for me and if you jump tell me when and where and I’ll follow you out dah window. Oh Bucs, Oh Bucs you do the same stupid thing every year….getting rid of good and great players…..And Lovie, you aren’t looking very flexible….oh misery, oh my, another year of who’s that player? What number? and Oh Nos on game day as I turn of the TV in the mid 4th Q.

  29. Bill T Says:

Shields is an excellent CB and got 4 yrs/$39m. So $10m would be the cost for a a great CB. Only Revis and Sherman’s market would be $12m+ on a longer term deal.

I want them to renegotiate Revis at 4 yrs/$50m but have no idea what numbers they are talking or if Revis is even interestesd. It seems on Twitter that Revis has no interest in anything less than $16m next year to stay with the Bucs….which is disappointing.

  30. The_Buc_Realist Says:

They did ask Revis for a paycut, it was reportedm that he was not intrested. So now its off to Cleveland or Oakland with ya!!!

Fix this Mess Lovie, and Be a Legend!!!

Its a Great Day in Tampa Bay!!!!!
    Go Bucs!!!!
