Jay Glazer: Bucs Have New GM

January 21st, 2014

New Bucs general manager?

Joe was beginning to feel angst over the clock continuing to click and no one filling the seat of former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik. Well, it appears that wait is over.

Per uber NFL insider Jay Glazer (if he has ever been wrong about something, please let Joe know) of Fox Sports, the Bucs have decided to hire Jason Licht as their next general manager.

@JayGlazer: The Bucs have tabbed Jason Licht as their new General Manager. The two sides are still working out the contract. … Btw, the Bucs job Licht has been tabbed for is a “real” GM job as he has control of the draft & other personnel decisions.

That’s not an untoward request for power from any general manager. He should have control of the draft and personnel matters, with the coach having the final say with the 53-man roster.

Licht comes from the Arizona Cardinals where he served as a vice president of player personnel. He also was a right hand to Bill Belicheat for years. Not to alarm Bucs fans or anything, but the Cardinals are still searching for a quarterback to replace Kurt Warner.

Adam Schefter reports the same thing. (per league sources)

  2. joseph mamma Says:

Yeah but still that Cardinals roster is pretty solid I believe.

  3. deminion Says:

@joe u scared me!!!! (the Cardinals are still searching for a quarterback to replace Kurt Warner)

  4. lightningbuc Says:

Is it too early for JBF to anoint him as Rock Star Redux?

  5. stevek Says:

Hail to the new Rock Star GM in town!

  6. Mumbles Says:

I hope this shuts the mouths of all those knuckleheads who were speaking out against diversity! Welcome aboard Jason.

  7. mpmalloy Says:

    Lordy! It’s about time.
I was gettin worried there for a minute.

  8. Orca Says:

Rock Star Licht (pronounced ‘light’)… Rock Star Part Deux.

  9. Yeah It's me! Says:

Funny how EVERYBODY assumed Lovie had total control because he was hired first even though he said he didn’t. Bucs just wanted to get Lovie before someone else did and since they fired Dom we would probably not have Lovie as HC if we hired a GM first.

  10. Joe Dunn Says:

So did Jay G or Adam S and P Yasinskas actually report it first?

    a) who cares, really??

and b) how can this hire be ANY good?? I have never heard of this dude

  11. Eric Says:

Nice looking résumé, previous work with Pats, Eagles, Cards. Those are some good organizations and they went to Super Bowls while he was there, so he knows what it looks like. Reid and Bellichick two of the best.

And he walked on at Nebraska at linebacker. Shows a bit of persistence.

Looks like a highly qualified professional. Breath of fresh air from his predecessor.

Naturally our local media hacked up the control and Lovie issue, as usual. What a sad group.

  12. Orca Says:

“b) how can this hire be ANY good?? I have never heard of this dude”

How many front office people can you name in the NFL? Not many. They only make headlines when they’re being interviewed for GM jobs. Jeez, that’s dumb.

  13. Clowney Says:

I hope he likes to dress up like a clown in his spare time.

  14. FLBoyInDallas Says:

2/3 of the league is still searching for a franchise QB to replace some past legend. Who cares? Meaningless little jab there at the end.

BTW, whichever GM drafts Joe’s JFF will be out of a job within 3 years of doing so. No doubt about it.

  15. Mulligan Says:

Has he been in charge of working the cap at his previous posts? When does the new year start and can the Bucs still pay bonus money for the 2013 season to free up cap space for the 2014 season?

  16. The_Buc_Realist Says:

Well, if true, after the last GM, He has some very small shoes to fill!

  17. spanishbuc Says:

The Cards may not have found a replacement for Kurt, but they have done a good job with their defense. Do we now have a defensive minded coach and GM? (I’m not bitching. just wondering)

  18. ROBERT6 Says:

now that the good cop and bad cop are in position we can get to FA and the draft!

  19. Macabee Says:

He should stop in, say hello, get pen and pad, and head straight to Mobile. Times a’ wasting! We need beef!

  20. PRBucFan Says:

The guy I wanted after Ballard turned us down 😀

And would rould you look at that, guess my crystal ball was right, he’s been tabbed a “real GM” lol.

Hopefully that will calm some tits

  21. cmurda Says:

This is a good hire from what I read from the powers that be. I have no idea who any of these guys are so I’ll just go with the flow here. I like the way the Cards have been shaping up. Its true they really never found that QB but that’s where Tedford comes in. We have great balance with the staff and I hope that it shakes out.

  22. Architek Says:

    Welcome aboard Mr Licht…

  23. Clowney Says:

The best name for our new Rockstar……………………MC Licht

  24. sneedy16 Says:

All I have to say is he was a college scout when the drafted Tom Brady in New England. Useless fact. lol

  25. Orca Says:

Are the Bucs beginning to see the Licht?

  26. Chad Says:

Yea Joe, still searching for a QB, but 1) He was not the GM. 2) look at some of the beasts that have come up in AZ (Tyran Mathieau, Pat Peterson, Calais Campbell, Daryl Washington) Love this hire!

  27. Northend Says:

    Mac,He’s already in Mobile.Been there all week……

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Joe Dunn…does it really matter if you’ve heard of his name or not? I’m as skeptical as I can be these days, but I’m not going dwell on the fact that I have not heard of this guy before. Hell how many other guys that were up for a GM spot and I actually know there names or have heard of them before? The answer is zero? Who the hell knows that many front office type names?

Bottom line : everything right now is a wait and see.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

@ Realist…I just saw your post. LMAO!

  30. joseph mamma Says:

Oh, Joe, you said to let you know if Jay Glazer has ever been wrong about something. He originally said he heard that Schiano’s job was safe. We now know he missed that one.

  31. PRBucFan Says:

The guy I wanted after Ballard turned us down 😀

And would rould you look at that, guess my crystal ball was right, he’s been tabbed a “real GM” lol.

Hopefully that will calm some people over till they find the next thing to start to worry about lol

  32. PRBucFan Says:

1987 Dunn just says it to say it now

I don’t know of you’ve noticed or not but that is literally almost the only thing he says now lol

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Not that means anything but wikipedia already has him listed as the Bucs GM.

  34. Buc1987 Says:

Yah PRB…I kinda thought so, but I was bored so. lol

  35. bucfanjeff Says:

“Not to alarm Bucs fans or anything, but the Cardinals are still searching for a quarterback to replace Kurt Warner.”

I took this another way…he knows which QB’s they like and whom they may make a play for.

  36. Rrsrq Says:

I wanna know if he keeps the current staff, specifically Stokes & Quarles. I think Hickey may get some other opportunities, maybe the fins

  37. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I’m glad the Glazers made this decision and didn’t necessarily let Lovie have his pick. Checks and balances are a good thing when it comes to authority. Doesn’t do anybody any good to let Lovie get too comfortable. Gotta have accountability and a GM who has an independent thought process. I like it.

  38. PRBucFan Says:

I did the same thing last thread lol

  39. Buc1987 Says:

Okay now it’s time to get to work guys. Please put a stop to my misery. Get my team winning again. Please.

  40. Eric Says:

Perfectly normal GM/HC division of power just like it always was going to be before the hacks jumped the gun and distorted it.

  41. bucs4lyfe Says:

just glad we didnt hire atlanta’s guy because beyond the big trade they made for julio jones and that for tony gonzalez their offense used to be high powered but they arent all that talented from top to bottom, it’s just saints traded for drew brees and hmmm somehow panthers and falcons sucked bad enough to draft quarterbacks at the top of the draft…..we have a chance to get back in the thick of the playoff race…saints receiver core is getting old, panthers cant address their awful secondary and their receiving core unless they get extremely lucky being that their salary cap is just as bad as the saints and atlanta well they just lost gonzalez and outside of matt ryan, julio jones theres nothing there that should scare anyone….if the bucs are smart this offseason the last two years would just seem like a bad dream…GO BUCS

  42. PRBucFan Says:

Lovie was telling the truth after all, aint that something? lol 😉

    People are funny

  43. Patrick in VA Says:

@Joe Dunn – how is it that you’re not working for the Bucs? Considering you know everyone who’s anyone worth knowing as far as coaches and front office types go it seems like you’d be an invaluable resource for them. maybe the glazers should just bring you on as a consultant so they can call you up with a list of names and the ones you haven’t heard of they can just take off the list immediately

  44. StAugBuc Says:

    @ Patrick:

    🙂

  45. Jon Says:

Well let’s see if he takes a QB. It’s easy since we all are experts on here. Nothing wrong with the guy but don’t know what he has done or why he has moved around between four clubs with similar titles. Fresh start

  46. Buc1987 Says:

bucs4lyfe…don’t forget 2011. That needs to be included in the nightmare as well.

  47. nick j Says:

    who cares

  48. Doc Says:

    Very good hire.

  49. bubashep Says:

Looks like a drinker. That will come in handy.

  50. Tampabaybucfan Says:

OK…so we haven’t heard of this guy before.

How many of you (honesly) can name several NFL Vice-Presidents of Player Personnel?

Just like me….don’t know, don’t give a rats a$$….the proof will be in the pudding.

All I want is at least the initial approval of Lovie Smith & the Buc Realist!!!

  51. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    honestly

  52. The_Buc_Realist Says:

I cannot endorse until after the draft and free-agency. I need some kind of track record and actions to see what they really think of the roster. I will not jump around and all excited when someone new that we don’t know tell us for the first time that the plan is ” Winning Football! ”

its a new regime and a new era for Bucs, I hope for the best! And TBBF you forgot to say that you haven’t called me an ” idiot ” like the others do.

  53. Go Bucs Says:

Licht (Bulb) should be a nice addition to the Buc family! Welcome to Tampa Mr. Licht Bulb.

  54. IdahoBucsfan Says:

We already have our QB! Lets get some linemen!

  55. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Buc Realist

I have never and will never call you an idiot like all of the others….

Actually, now that Dom is gone…perhaps you will have something else to contribute…and I applaud your decisiom to review after there is a track record.

  56. Joe Dunn Says:

    I will also add THIS – – –

    a) I wanted to get all you “Wannabe GMs riled up, and it WORKED.

    b) Does anybody on here REALLY have the ability to evaluate a guy that has NOT held this position before?? NO

    c) How many of you had ever heard of Tony Dungy before Bucs hired him?
I had not……and that turned out pretty damn good.

    d) and as far as CONTROL goes, didnt Gruden have a lot of say-so when he was here on personnel decisions?? Result = Super Bowl. But I could be W R O N G .

  57. PRBucFan Says:

I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF HIS NAME!!!

OH MY GOD HE MUST BE HORRIBLE!

    lol 😉

  58. Buc1987 Says:

    @Dunn

    C. Yes I did hear of Tony Dungy before he was hired. I saw his first few pressers and thought to myself. Here we go again, another moron. Things were very bleak back then, much worse than they are now. I don’t think anyone expected all that much from Dungy. So it’s a ya never know for me.

    A. You got no one riled up at all. If they were riled they would have agreed with you. Did it work?

  59. NJBucsFan Says:

    Star Licth?

  60. NJBucsFan Says:

    Licht*

  61. Capt. Tim Says:

    “Rock star Licht”
    The low calorie alternative!

Welcome To Tampa, Mr. Licht. Your job is well layed out before you.
Truly wish you the best of luck and success!
    For all our sakes!!

  62. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I have a HUGE problem with his race.

We don’t need a human GM…I wanted one from Krypton!

  63. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

How many Lichts does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll pop?

    (Someone had to sat it)

  64. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Say*

  65. Joe Dunn Says:

    *Buc1987

Didnt they start out about 2-6 in Tony’s first half a season?

Then it got better…… My point is that just because the local Buc fans are not aware of a coaching or GM candidate does not mean they will not turn out to be very effective.

I am still amazed (seriously) how critical fans are of every move the team makes. As if they are T H A T smart ???? I doubt it.

I have listened (and called in) a ton over the years to sports talk radio, and if a person does not have the nerve to call in (I do) but will sit at home and type, just how credible are they?

I am not, by the way, being critical of you personally. You seem to have a brain!!

  66. WinterSpringsBucsFan Says:

Prior to working with the Cardinals in 2008, Licht spent five years (2003-07) with the Philadelphia Eagles, including the final two years as Vice President of Player Personnel. During Licht’s career, he has worked with four Super Bowl teams (New England—XLVI, XXXVI, Arizona—XLIII, and Philadelphia—XXXIX)

How’s that for real NFL expirence? I like it. Welcome aboard Sir!

  67. Joe Dunn Says:

    ***WinterSpringsBucsFan

    Good research!!

I wish him the best (naturally)

  68. Underdog_Lefty Says:

Joe, I’m curious if there are NFL rules regarding what assets a front office person can take with them when they move from one team to another? Working on the periphery of the legal world, my experience has been that the data collected, and in this case the player profiles from scouting and video analysis reports, etc., would be the property of the former employee and legal action could be taken if removed or copied. If similar rules apply in the NFL, then how does the new GM bring his experience and “knowledge” with him, taking the legal risk and copying it all before he goes, or just walk away with only what is in his head?

  69. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Underdog_Lefty

I would think a lot of stuff is stored in his head.
