Koetter Assigns Responsibilty On Opening TD

Rams WR Brian Quick was on the back end of a Case Keenum bomb less than three minutes into Sunday’s game. Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter pointed a finger yesterday.

Sunday’s shock waves reverberated early through the Stadium on Dale Mabry Highway, less than three minutes into the game.

How could the Bucs make Case Keenum, touchdown-free beore Sunday, look like Brett Favre?

Keenum connected with Brian Quick on a 44-yard bomb strike (video here) with cornerback Alterraun Verner trailing and hold his hands out in disgust, as if to say, “Where’s my safety help?”

Dirk Koetter and analysts implied there was supposed to be safety help for Verner on the play, but Koetter quashed that notion yesterday at his news conference. Koetter explained the defensive check communicated on the play meant basic man-on-man coverage.

“It really wasn’t on the safety. That was the corner’s play all the way,” Koetter said.

So there you have it.

Tighten up the secondary and this team will be just fine.

Unfortunately you can’t tighten something up if a few nuts and bolts are missing while the ones you got are stripped as well.

It’s going to be a long season of trying to outscore the other team.

    Good luck and Go Bucs!

“It really wasn’t on the safety. That was the corner’s play all the way”

We’re all seeing why Verner and Banks were benched last year.

  3. 911bucs Says:

I was more pissed on the 3rd and 17 penalty late. And the td pass to Austin where he literally walked in. Pathetic

  4. Mike Says:

You don need athletic corners. You need SMART corners. Offense is speed and timing, defense is position. If you don’t know what your supposed to be doing ad where you are supposed to go, nothing else matters on defense.

Bucs have a horrible draft history post superbowl….no position worse than DB. Free agents haven’t been any prize either

  5. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

Fans are freaking out as usual on social media, I’ve been trying to explain to them that u must have patient when u decide to change your whole coaching staff and “defensive scheme more importantly” every other year. It’s gonna a take time for these guys to know there assignments and to stay in there gaps. Once we get that basic stuff down we will be fine, u take away the big plays and this defense hasn’t looked that bad. We have held up nice against the run and pretty much shut Gurley Down. And to Banks defense u can’t get on him because he hasn’t even been given a chance yet this year, and he also looked good in preseason making way more plays than Verner. I think its unfair considering all the blown coverages I’ve seen, and the lack of improvement from Verner, yet he continues to get plenty of playing time.

  6. jwash3 Says:

so then it falls on mike smith.

Why the hell would you play cover-0 on third and long with sub-par man corners?!

  7. DemBoyzFromDaBay727 Says:

So far it seems like the only LEGIT corner we have is the rookie from the SWAMP. 🐊 he’s the only one doing his job consistently and not getting picked on like the rest of our CB’s.

  8. BigPoppaBuc Says:

I’ll deserve my judgement of mike smith for after the bye week. Overall the defense has been ok. It’s the big, big plays that are breaking our back and they’ve all seemed like miscommunication and missed assignments. It’s three games into a brand new defense. I’m still preaching patience with all things on this team. Patience fellas.

  9. rayjay1122 Says:

The entire product is pathetic. This organization has more excuses for losing……so over it. They better get their acts together and since the entire NFC South is starting the season dismal, they are not in too bad of shape yet. Unfortunately it wont matter. The Bucs are just perennial losers with no dog in them. I think my patience with this team figuring out a way to become relevant has just about been exhausted. Still a fan, just one who has lost all hope and expectations of ever being a good team again. 4 or 5 wins this season is about what they are showing themselves to be able to possibly win.

  10. thunderchunkyPA Says:

DemBoyz, then how do you explain Jim Schwartz taking Fletcher Cox and a bunch of no names and making the Philly D roll like they are? The it takes time thing is over blown.

let’s not get stupid now… vh3 has made some plays but he has been embarrassed a couple of times too. I was not on board with the vh3 pick and still don’t think he will amount to anything more than serviceable corner at nfl level. however, he has impressed me a bit that being said he is hardly playing lights out and he will be embarrassed by a bigger receiver before the year is out. Let’s see what the little guy can do against Benjamin in Carolina.

  12. Dr A Says:

We need to promote banks to 3rd CB, it doesn’t get worse than how verner played vs the rams. I was legit surprised to see him in the game after that first bomb he gave up.

  13. iamkingsu Says:

Again he was beat by 5 yards of course he was going to look for help. My guess before the season was Week 4 Robinson will be in our top 3 corners rotation and starting opposite Hargreaves by the time we face the 49ers after the BYE because Grimes got manhandled by Carolina’s receivers on Monday Night.

  14. rrsrq Says:

When do you give Banks a chance to show up on Sundays, can’t be any worse.

  15. Mike Johnson Says:

for the millioneth time..McDougle, Verner, Banks, and Conte all need to be sweeping floors on the graveyard shift at Walleyworld!! They should have been gone..yesteryear! And you will see more..many more TD’s completed and long gains while they are back there. 5-11 here we come!

  16. iamkingsu Says:

If you’re not going to put Banks in press man to coverage where he can use his size and length I don’t know why you have him. Quit with the Got D@mn safety talk!

  17. scott Says:

rrsrq Banks would of got torched at least once. He always does

  18. LakeLandBuc Says:

It don’t make since to fire Lovie and keep the players that got him fired in the first place. Verner, Conte, Tandy, Banks, McDougald, Jude. This franchise is ass backwards.

  19. LargoBuc Says:

I guess it wasnt scheme holding Verner back, he’s just mediocre. And I don’t wana hear him biching about his safety help, that’s weak. He should be more than capable of covering this guy I never heard of. If Verner could cover better, that would allow us to be more creative with our safety positioning. McDougald can hit, there has to be a way we can use that.

  20. LakeLandBuc Says:

You can play Cover 2, or you can play Cover Whatever or any basic defense. You still need quality players who can play in this league. And we don’t have those players, these players couldn’t play for any other teams. This secondary sucks and it will continue to suck until we get some players who can actually play football.

  21. iamkingsu Says:

If you’re playing man to man to man for the life of me I can see the use of Verner. I know some of you’ll turned your tv off the dreadful Thursday night but I didn’t because I live outside of Tampa and it’s rare I see my Bucs on tv so I was going to see it through.

But it was on of the Falcons “Later” scores that night and he was lined up against what had to be their 7th receiver and was beaten by 8 yards from the snap.

From that point on I said that point on a football coach shouldn’t force poor Verner into a man to man situation in his life. It was so sad

  22. LargoBuc Says:

Lakeland your right. I repeatedley told people its fine to blame Lovie, but lets do so for the right reasons. Those blaming him over his “scheme” first off cover 3, Tampa 2 etc are very basic coverages that every team runs and if you have a defense that cpllectively can not grasp that, you are in deep trouble. Now we can hold Lovie accountable for not doing enough to get better players on defense. And I dont neccesarily blame him for getting his former players in to be stop gap starters as every coach does that, but completly ignoring the the defense in the draft was not wise on his part. We could have Adrian Amos. Wasnt he drafted in round 4 or 5? Or Kawan Short the previous year instead of ASJ? Poor personel choices hurt him not his “scheme”.

  23. FLBoyInDallas Says:

The secondary can’t be tightened up until this team gets an actual, you know, PASS RUSH. You could have Darrell Green and Deion Sanders in their prime manning both sides of the field and if the defense can’t get any pressure on the QB even those guys would eventually get beaten. The loss of Ayers and Smith exposed the woeful lack of depth at DE for this team.

Now you guys know why Schiano blitzed like a man possessed. He had no DE talent and he knew that to get any pressure at all he had to get creative. With Ayers and Smith out our current DC is gonna have to find other ways to make the QB feel some heat. Not sure what he comes up with but he better be hosting all night brainstorming sessions to figure it the hell out, and quick.

  24. 813bucboi Says:

@tmaxcon…VHG has been our best db in the secondary by far….he held his own against Julio….he hasn’t been embarrassed…that would be verner and grimes….they have given up the td’s….

@bigpoppabuc……the defense hasn’t played that bad?…have you watched the games?….so far they have given up an average of 33 points per game these first 3 games….they have allowed more 40+ plays this year in 3games than all of last year…we only have 1 defensive turnover….if you think that’s ok defensive play I would hate to see what you call bad defensive play….GO BUCS!!!

  25. jwash3 Says:

    Bigpoppa,

How can you say the D is playing ok!? We’ve given up more points than anybody in the league…which means we’re the worst defense out there. If they’d even played “ok” we’d be 2-1 right now.

  26. Patrick in VA Says:

We’re conditioned to think that. Every DC we’ve had come in here has been selling us on the idea that it takes somewhere between 2 and 10 years for a team to be able to get their heads around how to play their defense. And we just eat it up every time. We’ve accepted it as a given.

  27. Architek Says:

    Correction FlBoyinDallas-
The question is why don’t we have more DE – pass rush since the departure of Gruden??

  28. BenjaminBuc Says:

The coverage, whether man or zone, does not and will not matter until this team can pressure the quarterback. In today’s NFL, filled with 3 and 4 receiver sets and illegal contact / defensive holding / pass interference called on seemingly every other play, the secondary will continue to get exposed in coverage. That is not to say that our safeties are not liabilities in coverage, but it starts with getting pressure with the front 4 and the Bucs have not had a solid pass rush in years. As sacks do not seem anywhere in the foreseeable future, at least disrupt the timing and move the quarterback off of his spots.

  29. SOEbuc Says:

Stop talking about benching Verner. He was shutting Carson Palmer down in the entire first half last week. Some guys have bad plays on bad days and now everyone wants to make Banks be the starter because they saw him play well against 3rd string defense and get a pick directly thrown to him in the preseason. I go Verner over Banks any day and I think the Bucs will too. Especially at $9 mil a year

  30. tmaxcon Says:

    813bucboi

vh3 has been decent but nothing special so slow your roll a bit. the entire secondary has sucked and he is part o f it and deserves part of the blame. he will be a decent serviceable corner in the league for a few years anything more only time will tell. it’s not like you will ever look at a play of his objectively so not point in debating it with you. the fan boy glasses will always come shinning through. i respect your loyalty to the little guy.

  31. SOEbuc Says:

    *third string offense

  32. mike n Says:

Did anyone else watch MNF last night and see sterling moore basicaly shut down J Jones… why did we not resign him again???? He makes 1/3 of Verner

  33. 813bucboi Says:

@tmaxcon…im calling it how I see it….answer this….is VHG our best db on the team?….if not who is?….GO BUCS!!!!

  34. orlbucfan Says:

Why not stick Banks in? Let him rush the passer. Kiffin did it all the time with his DBs. He’s big enough. He also knocks balls away more than Conte is doing. Right now, he’s paid squat (can’t say that for the newest Jet, ASJ), and he just sits on the sidelined fully dressed out and gets mildewed. Find out where all the weak links are. That is also Smith’s job! Go Bucs!!

  35. Kevin Says:

Well who is comminucating the valls on defense. Verner obviously expected help. I called before the game, we woild make keenum look like an elite passer. Sorry but Im not.convinced this secondary is going to perform better even with upgrades at saftey. And if we are playing man coverage why do we never press? Please tell me. Iy not like we are holding offenses to lower numbers right now so what is there to lose?

  36. Bucsfanman Says:

BINGO to those who understand that you have to have pressure from the D-line. It simply does not matter who is in the secondary if a QB has all day to throw.
No matter what, you need talented football players. Players play and coaches coach. Smitty ain’t going to cover anybody so one of these players better do it!

  37. DPewter Says:

Leave Hargreaves on the outside and have Hey-Jude come in on Nickel packages. Important completions always seem to be made on Verner’s side.

We should’ve traded Verner and kept Moore…

  38. 813bucboi Says:

@Bucsfanman….I agree…pressure on the qb is very important for any defense….its the job of smitty to create/generate pressure when we cant get it from the front 4….

@dpewter…I agree…we’ve all seen enough of verner….trade him for a draft pick that we so desperately need….GO BUCS!!!!

  39. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Says:

Gurley never gets mentioned in this loss, but in a way he did this to us. His running ability, and our obsession in stopping it at all costs, allowed their receivers to get behind us way too many times.

  40. Destinjohnny Says:

Ya with out ferocious pass rush it’s shocking that could happen.
I think jason was spot on not drafting any lineman in the deepest line draft they say ever.
    PAss rush is overrated

  41. Rich Says:

Time for Hargraves. And we need Safety help! Conte spends his time looking at the backs of opposing players and McDougall’s forgotten how to tackle.

  42. BigHogHaynes Says:

Didn’t I say in preseason that Banks and Verner would be cut, they weren’t but they should have been, they are here to stay now so let’s and I quote the KNOW IT ALL “coach the LOVIE out of them” scheme be damn, who can make a play? T. O. used to say “I can”. Has the Conspiracy run deep enough yet! Open your eyes people firing LOVIE was about ABSOLUTE POWER…… Now put these players in a position to get us a win Sunday or Coach K might be forced to look or another Defensive Coordinator during the BYE week! 13 games to play 8 more games to win! Let’s go Bucs time to get an Upset Win!!
