Freeman Will Be The No. 2 QB

September 25th, 2013

No. Josh Freeman doesn’t have to beat out Dan Orlovsky for the backup quarterback job in the wake of his official benching in favor of Mike Glennon.

Joe has penetrated the walls of One Buc Palace and has learned that Freeman will be the Bucs’ No. 2 quarterback on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals. Freeman will not be buried further into irrelevancy.

Joe watched the media-allowed session of practice today and Freeman and Glennon were working alongside each other. Yes, the Bucs will entertain trade offers for Freeman, but Joe strongly suspects the right offer might take a while.

    :/

  3. Patrick Says:

I still think Jacksonville would take him. They would probably snatch him for a 6th/7th pick. If not JAX, try Washington. Guess who works there?

  4. bucrightoff Says:

Jacksonville is getting Teddy Bridgewater. Cleveland is drafting a QB. Arizona is drafting a QB. Minnesota might be the only place that trades for him, and is he really an upgrade over Ponder or Matt Cassel, both of whom have full knowledge of the playbook unlike Freeman, who’d be learning from scratch in the middle of the season? And if Minnesota’s season goes really south its very possible Frazier gets fired and the new guy will want to bring in his own QB, likely through the draft. Its a strong upcoming draft class and a really weak UFA class for QBs.

If the Bucs trade Freeman it will be to someone looking for a backup.

  5. Ricardo Esteban Says:

please don’t let this guy anywhere near the field again. he is done with this team!

    make orlovsky the #2

I doubt free has any will left in him @ this point and will probably be hungover every other day.

  6. bucrightoff Says:

And as soon as I post that…

No surprise: Jaguars have zero interest in trading for Bucs QB Josh Freeman

  7. Couch Fan Says:

But I thought Orlovsky was on the team simply because Glennon sucks?

  8. Buc1987 Says:

Josh needs to stay the F away from Glennon. We don’t need Freeman clouding up this kid’s head with his cloudy brain.

  9. Couch Fan Says:

There is no reason to trade Freewee. Nobody would give us anything for him and he will make for the best back up in the league. How many other back ups can say they are the franchise record holders?

  10. Bucworld Says:

I bet Josh is just as happy as the fans that wanted him gone. It’s obvious that he did not want to be in Tampa anymore. Now we can move on. This situation could have been handled better though. They should have been honest and upfront about Freeman long ago like Harbaugh handled the Alex Smith situation.

  11. Dave Says:

“Joe strongly suspects the right offer might take a while.”

Based on your track record for predictions, we should see a trade within the next 2 hours.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

Yep there really is no more debate about Josh anymore for Bucs fans. Unless it turns into a QB carousel. Which I hope like hell it does not.

  13. Adam L. Says:

I was BEGGING for Alex Smith in the off season. BEGGING. same situation as Drew Brees.

You know who might be up to trade? San Diego. They Chargers might unload Rivers for picks in a rebus effort. I’d argue that the Bucs are closer than the Chargers are.

  14. Buc1987 Says:

    Dave…lol hilariously true.

  15. The_Buc_Realist Says:

In other words, the only value for JFro-6pak is maybe a 7th rounder and a dirty napkin,

  16. D-Rome Says:

Josh Freeman’s performance is a symptom of a much larger issue with the Bucs. I hope Glennon is successful moving forward but I have my doubts.

This move by the Bucs confirms to me that just about all the rumors coming out of One Buc, despite what the players actually say, are true. This whole Freeman vs. Schiano and the associated rumors about their relationship have been true all along. I’m sure the players complaining about Schiano’s game plan, in particular Darelle Revis, are also true. I’d bet that Dominick and Schiano really do not get along and do not see eye to eye.

Schiano has already lost this team. He needs to find success in the lower ranks before he tries the NFL. Players at this level don’t respect him.

I’ve been calling for the benching of Freeman since preseason, but I’m still a little sad today because I had high hopes for him. I hope he can turn his career around but the odds are stacked against him. I wouldn’t be surprised if Belichick gives him a chance next year to become Brady’s backup.

  19. Natenazty Says:

Hindsight: Schiano and Dom were anticipating Freeman’s demise coming into this year. 1) They surprised everyone by drafting Glennon in the 3rd round, which I thought was a reach (probably would of been there in the 4th or 5th) and 2) Glennon got pretty much every snap in the preseason. Good play from Freeman was not expected by Schiano and Dom this year. Remember, his horrible play extends back to his collapse last year. Schiano and Dom got to go over all of his tape all offseason. They know what they had in Freeman, as did many of us. This situation today is simply their plan coming to fruition.

Quarterbacks currently in the NFL that would be solid starters for us:

    Kyle Orton (DAL)

    Kirk Cousins (WSH)

Philip Rivers (SD – if they have another disappointing season, look for them to trade him)

Tony Romo (DAL – same here. Another playoff-less season, Dallas could trade him)

  23. DP4LIFE22 Says:

Freeman has more issues than his productivity going on. players know it and so do other insiders. Getting to your own camp 4hrs late aint from sleeping in, fours late you better be coming from california on a flight. plus the any other things that ave gone on with his dedication.

trade for Cousins !!!!! he is proven and young

  24. D-Rome Says:

Philip Rivers (SD – if they have another disappointing season, look for them to trade him)

Bucs won’t do that because it makes too much sense. I think Phillip Rivers would be great here. It’s my understanding the Chargers will look to clean house at the end of the season and look to rebuild and that process would not include Phillip Rivers.

Even if Glennon struggles a bit this year, bring in Chucky as HC, let him assemble an NFL staff, and I have no doubt that Chucky can turn this QB and this teams talent into a contender. And keep Dom! He’s the reason we have all this talent AND money!

  27. Couch Fan Says:

    Lol

  28. MakaveliTheDon Says:

there you go lightning McQueen! now you get it!

  29. Couch Fan Says:

Do you really think Chucky would want to come back? I seriously doubt it.

  30. MakaveliTheDon Says:

oh god… here comes little furniture fan.

  31. Patrick Says:

@Makaveli……..Gruden is not coming back here. We fired him, remember? Although….I would actually like to have him back.

  32. MakaveliTheDon Says:

I’m sorry couch, Ive already got lightning mcQueens vagg to break, I have no time for you.

yes Mak thank the gods I have returned to enlighten you some more.

  34. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    yeah. wishful thinkin Pat…

  35. Jordon Says:

Natenatzy, if coach Schiano and Mark Dominik “saw” this coming, they would have traded Freeman while he still had draft value. This is simply a case of a player who has regressed and seems unwilling to put in the time and effort to turn it around. It seems that Josh’s attitude lately has shown that he does not have what it takes (at least at this point in his career) to be a top tier QB. The best QB’s in the NFL don’ t necessarily have to have rocket arms and be extremely mobile…look at Peyton, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Ryan …they all have good (but not necessarily great) arms. None of them are real risks to take off and beat you running down the field …but they are all intelligent, detail oriented and have that killer instinct to win that Freeman lacks! I don’t know that Glennon is the long term answer either, but we already know that Freeman is not! Time to evaluate the rookie so we can decide if we need to draft or acquire another guy in the offseason! I wish Josh the best of luck in the future…maybe playing behind a great QB and watching the prepare and play would resurrect his career!

  36. DCBUCSFAN Says:

This inept coaching staff along with the GM needs to be benched, not Josh Freeman!

Every move they make magnifies their ineptness, incompetence, and inability to strategically plan – long term, and game day situations.

The Glazers should hire Jimmy Johnson as a consultant, and coaches that can develop talent and rid themselves of this garbage of a coaching.

    #Glennonainttheanswer

  37. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    @DCBUCSFAN

I gotta admire your dedication to Free, but he’s gone. I was as big a Freemanite as there was, but its in Free’s best interest too to move on.

I also agree that this HC has to go, but I think Dom deserves to stay with the talent he’s given us.

Fck it! Bring Chucky Back Home!

  38. Natenazty Says:

Gruden? Really? You listen to him on MNF for a couple years talk about everyone like their Hall of Famers and now you want him back? How soon you forget how lousy his offense was. How the players couldn’t stand him cause he would tell them what they wanted to hear all week and do something completely different during the actual game. Gruden is a great talker and makes for good sound bites (love him on MNF), but is full of it.

  39. lightningbuc Says:

    “be a man”

    ______

    tonytwobits,

Obviously I’m not half the man you are – you know, calling other posters’ wives the most vile word in the English language! Now that’s manly!

  40. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    Bring Chucky Back Home!

  41. Natenazty Says:

If Gruden couldn’t figure out how to put Joey Galloway and Antonio Bryant on the field at the same time, how the hell would he manage our talent now?

  42. RBellBuc Says:

First of all.. Chucky would have to want to come back. That’s the future problem I see with the Bucs. No experienced NFL Coach would want this job. It’s like the place where NFL Coach’s go to die. Besides Dungy, what other coach went on to have a head coaching career somewhere else? Now name how many prominent ex-NFL head coaches turned down an offer from the Bucs? Now name some candidates who even had a winning record apply. Schottenheimer? Coach’s also choose. Andy Reid said no, Parcells has said noway, Chip Kelley said not on your life, and Jeff Fisher just laughed. I wonder how many good FA’s turn us down regularly, unless we overpay?

  43. MakaveliTheDon Says:

did I not “man” up, and sincerely apologize to that lady TWICE when I realized she in fact did not lie about be??

    keep trying though lightning mcQueen.

by the way, I dont care if youre a man, woman, or a martian, you fabricate lies about me, youre a f**kin cunnt.

  44. snookau Says:

Freeman and #2 definitely belong in the same sentence.

  45. Patrick Says:

Gruden was still able to field competitive teams despite the Glazers refusal to spend money on talent to improve the roster and having a terrible GM in Bruce Allen. If Gruden was coaching a team with this talent, we sure as hell wouldn’t be 0-3 and Freeman would’ve been gone long ago.

  46. Patrick Says:

The Glazers would look like the biggest morons on the planet if they re-hired a coach they fired 5 years ago. Has that ever even been done before?

  47. bucrightoff Says:

The Montreal Canadiens hired Michel Therrien again last year after he was fired by the team in 2003. That’s pretty much the only example I can think of.

  48. Jacko101 Says:

All the Glennon mobsters will be calling for his head, I’m glad he gets a chance but in reality I hope he fails so Schiano, and Mark Go Elsewhere Sad but true.

  49. Jacko101 Says:

I swear with the Bucs leadership it’s like the Blind leading the Blind

  50. ChanEpic Says:

After watching the flailing around the last few seasons isn’t it obviously, painfully clear that firing Dungy and Gruden were mistakes.

  51. Couch Fan Says:

    Jacko101 said,

I hope he fails so Schiano, and Mark Go Elsewhere

    ——————————

Wow. So your hoping for failure… Now this is the definition of a “hater” if there was such a thing on here.

You know you can always become a fan of another team right? Just sayin…

  52. Ricardo Esteban Says:

I’m just glad we got a smart QB with a big arm…exactly what this team needs

as opposed to a QB with no football IQ and a penchant for the white lady

    IT’S A NEW DAY!!!

  53. D-Rome Says:

Is there any truth that Freeman has a drug problem?

  54. buc4lyfe Says:

its funny how josh freeman was the guy that was always first in the building before schiano got here…..lets see glennon complete go routes to a 5’7 muscle hampster, believe it or not thats not a high % throw no matter who is under center…..lets see if we can actually sustain drives and hope to god that we arent in close games because we need blowouts to keep schiano from making any important decisions, lol josh freeman got the blame for the losing streak even though he’s sitting on the bench with a lead at the end of about 4 games…..yea im glad glennon is in because he has no one else to blame for the idiotic decisions he makes on gameday

    #glennon save my job please

  55. bucrightoff Says:

Skip Bayless thinks Freeman is twice the QB as Glennon. He also said the Broncos should keep Tebow and not sign Manning. So I feel twice as good about this switch as I did before.

  56. BirdDoggers Says:

Josh might be better off as the 3rd stringer. It won’t help Glennon if part of the fan base calls for Freeman to re-enter as the starter if Glennon struggles.

  57. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

@1987,YEAH ,YOU’RE right ,there is no more debate about Freeman.I’m just glad to see all the freemanites hang their head in defeat and crawl back into josh’s jock where they belong glad you got keen to freeman’s loser ways before the proof came out today.I’m proud to be a buc fan again.

  58. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

    @buc4lyfe, YOU’RE STUPID!!!!

  59. shotybuc Says:

Benching freeman is not a big deal, i remember when griese was benched by Gruden after 3 bad games, produce now or pay later, obviously nothing was putting a chip on jfrees shoulder, maybe this will..besides last year if the falcons didnt clinch a first round bye hed be 0-9 up to now..too long to wait for a change, glad it finally happened, and big dog says he left with the lead in 5 of the games we lost, hummph, none of those teams we had a lead on were playoff teams, you put away crap teams..jeez

  60. BamBamBuc Says:

Never fear, Freeman will be traded for any pick or player they can get. We have Orlovsky as a backup, get used to it. If Glennon is horrible, was it Josh or the scheme? If it was scheme, we just dealt a decent QB and got nothing in return and have no QB. If Glennon is ok, we probably miss out on a better QB next year. I won’t even suggest Glennon is great. We won’t get a comp pick if we keep Free and let him go in free agency, we added Goldson and Revis, which the NFL will deem a plus for the team, therefore no comp pick.

  61. BamBamBuc Says:

Also, I’m starting to worry about the locker room and behind the scenes at one buc. Free obviously isn’t happy here. When Bennett left for Seattle, he didn’t exactly have good things to say about how things were handled here.

  62. buc4lyfe Says:

    @GRIF4FREESUX

Your stupid because you act like the argument was about whether glennon would start or not which shows your freakin reading level. the argument was would he be an upgrade….idiot your so dumb because your gloating because glennon is now the starter and he hasnt played a single snap as if you expect this guy to come in a be a savior….

GUESS WHAT, THE SAME KNOCK OR FREEMAN IS THE SAME ONE ON GLENNON, INCONSISTENT AND THROWS LOTS OF RISKY PASSES WHICH LEAD TO ALL THE INTERCEPTIONS IN COLLEGE BUT HEY….GRIF4FREESUX ENJOY

but everyone knew this move was coming at some point
I didnt agree with it but i was ready to get it started which is what i always said, i always said he was inconsistent and inaccurate but he was better than glennon. I was ready for this move because now schiano is tied to glennon and if he is nothing like a franchise qb that he is trying to say he is, freeman goes somewhere else and shines what do you think will happen to schiano if were picking in the top of the draft again

we gave up a pick for revis…13th pick so clearly we sucked last year. the coach is the idiot…not for benching freeman but for the idiotic offense he’s running and what he’s asking freeman to do so you need to watch the offense and the plays as much as how glennon throws because if the come with short quick throws basically changing the offense for glennon why didnt they do it for josh?

No rookie qb is going to have success with a tight end or slot guy to bail them out…i doubt their gonna have glennon doing this dumb receiver routes that take forever to develop

i dont wanna see a soul making excuses for glennon if receivers are dropping touchdown passes, just take your medicine like the so called freemanites did. this kid had every chance to come in and take the starting position….guess were about to see if schiano is as much an idiot as you are you inbreed
