Grimm’s Legal Troubles Extended To Sept. 12

July 15th, 2013

One would think the Bucs and Cody Grimm would want his charges in Virginia for public swearing/intoxication swept away before the start of training camp and/or the regular season.

It seemed like that might happen, but Joe has learned Grimm’s court hearing last week was rescheduled for Sept. 12, per court records.

That hearing is for the May 26 arrest. Grimm also was nabbed on the same charge back in March. For that one, he got a “deferred disposition,” which essentially means stay out of trouble and the state of Virginia won’t punish you further. A court review/hearing on that case is set for Oct. 3.

Barring injuries to other members of the Bucs secondary, Grimm is a prime candidate to be traded at the close of the preseason, assuming he’s healthy and plays well during preseason games. Grimm surely will get plenty of work in August, and he has starting experience and plays special teams well. If another club has injuries at safety, Grimm could fetch a one of those seventh-round picks coveted by Bucs rockstar general manager Mark Dominik.

But Grimm’s looming court situation — and a potential suspension by Roger Goodell — could make that messy.

As for making the Bucs’ 53-man roster, Grimm will have a hard time without injuries in the secondary. Greg Schiano likes the playmaking ability of Ahmad Black, and the Bucs seemingly won’t give up on last year’s sixth-round pick, safety Keith Tandy. They also might be forced to keep an extra cornerback. Last season, Ronde Barber was available in a pinch last season, but he’s gone.

Grimm’s known to be injury-prone himself.

  2. robert Says:

The outlook is grimm for him being on the team next year.

  3. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I thought Grimm looked so good during his rookie year. (Sans his first game.) I thought he was destined to be a good player that would eventually take over at safety. I feel like injuries have really derailed his career and he may never recover. Add on the brushes with the law and Grimms career may be all but over. Not sure if his father is still coaching with the Cardinals. I imagine he could convince his team to give him a shot.

  4. robert Says:

he looked good early on, but he never had the speed needed in the NFL. to be a starter anyways.

  5. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

He always was on the slow side. That is why he was converted to safety coming out Virginia. His instincts somewhat made up for the lack of speed for the but after the broken leg it was simply too much. A slow guy already that injures his leg is bad news. I wish the guy the best of luck, I just don’t think he will experience success as a Buccaneer.

  6. robert Says:

the guy has spunk, but so did Gradkowski.

and with the safeties we now have his ONLY shot of making the roster is an injury to one of them.

  7. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I hate to say it, but if they would only carry two QBs we could possibly keep an extra player that would otherwise be on the bubble. Maybe it’s time to see if Orlovsky can make another team. We know Glennon going nowhere.

  8. tampabaybucfan Says:

Oh, I just had a horrible thought…..Grimm gets traded or cut and saves a roster spot for my favorite….Myron!!!

  9. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Well, it looks like we can agree on something. I imagine that aside from Barron and Goldson, Ahmad Black and Keith Tandy will be the only backups. Especially with the need of depth at corner. I expect Revis to be good to go week one but he IS coming off an injury. Wright also had some injury issues last year so this backfield could look real bad in a hurry with just one injury. We really need get lucky with injuries this year and hopefully just draft for depth in 2014.

Mr off topic strikes again with this from Roddy White : “All them jurors should go home tonight and kill themselves for letting a grown man get away with killing a kid”.

Sorry but I just saw that on the news and my jaw dropped.

  11. BigMacAttack Says:

Grimm does not appear to be a fan of the weight room. Many players transform their bodies over their first few years. Grimm still appears to be the same 6oz piece of whoopass that showed up here. It’s a shame because he could have built his body to better take the punishment. He has talent but doesn’t seem like the desire is truly there. Drinking and partying can be done later. Now is the time to work, when the opportunity is there. It won’t come around again and you can rest when your dead.

  12. Andrew 1 Says:

the thing that stood out to me the most in the article is that a person can be charged with public swearing in Virginia. Never knew that could be against the law.

as for Grimm… it was nice known ya. best of luck.

  13. Buc1987 Says:

I’m calling the NFL offices tommorow to try and get Roddy White a suspension. Hey whatever helps us.

  14. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I really doubt Grimm will be traded at the end of rookie camp. All the other teams will know he’s getting cut. And odds are he isn’t and was never that good anyway.

  15. Mike J Says:

Andrew 1 , it seems we have Freedom of Speech unless we transgress a law about….speech. And there are a lot of them.
Pardon for the aside, but the country grows more fascist and yet somehow more socialist daily.

  16. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Mike J

I hear you. the way it contradicts itself doesn’t make much sense to me, but I definatly learned something new. Im not very knowledgeable when it comes obscure laws like this one, but this had me curious enough to investigate Virgina’s laws even further. I was surprised to that find adultery was also against the law in that state. those types of laws seem a bit archaic to me and should be done away with. just my honest opinion.

  17. Bucfever40 Says:

I look at Cody Grimm and I don’t see an NFL player, I mean look at the picture featured for this story, he’s got under developed arms on a small body with face that looks more like high school than NFL, he did have some potential early on and earned some respect on the team, but even at his best was barely good enough for a lower echelon defensive backfield in the NFL, now he’s on a defense that boast (on paper) likely the best defensive backfield, I’ll be surprised if he even makes it past camp.

  18. Buc1987 Says:

@Andrew 1…yes adultery is against the law in N.C. too, and get this in N.C. it’s actually against the law to live with and have sex with someone that your not married to. Now I have not checked into it. But I lived there for about 5 or 6 yrs and heard about it all the time. It’s just not enforced I guess.

  19. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc1987

wow. I understand those kinds of laws aren’t really enforced but why not just take it a step further and do away with them altogether if in fact they aren’t enforced. to much of a hassle maybe? I mean you would think a law like that would have been abolished when separation of church and state occurred considering its mainly viewed as being morally wrong and sin in the christian sense. whatever… Ill leave it up to the omniscient law makers and politicians in our country to figure out. go get em guys.

  20. Buc1987 Says:

lol Andrew 1 …it’s the bible belt.

  21. BigMacAttack Says:

Remember that Virginia is one of 4 Commonwealths which were formed before the Country became the United States. They did this in rebellion to the British Monarchy. As the United States was formed it was a Nation under GOD. Our forefathers were Christians who believed strongly in the Ten Commandments. These laws were written in belief of those Commandments yet freedom of speech should have trumped this law. I am not a historian but as our Nation was formed as a Republic and not a Democracy as some would have you believe, states were somewhat autonomous in their governance.

My Daughter just moved back from Norfolk, Va and informed me that their view of the law is very black and white compared to the gray that most of us reside in. Be careful there, especially if you keep a gun with you.

  22. BigMacAttack Says:

Maybe young Master Grimm should have done his partying in West Virginia.

  23. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ BigMacAttack

“These laws were written in belief of those Commandments yet freedom of speech should have trumped this law.”

thats the part that throws me off a bit. it SHOULD have trumped those laws and yet it doesn’t. I can see now that those southern states, or “bible belt” states as Buc1987 put it, are steadfast in there belief that they should be run in a more traditional or conservative sense more so than the rest of the country. if thats the way they want it then so be it. I certainly want no part of it.

  24. BigMacAttack Says:

It’s time for secession. Funny how conservative those who founded the country were. And how they loved their guns. It’s funny how so many of the problems in this country stem from bad behavior and a sense of entitlement.

  27. Andrew 1 Says:

Im guessing Grimm doesnt either right about now.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Okay it’s getting political now. I come in here to get away from politics. Which is my 2nd hobby. It’s almost midnight and 23 more days til pre-season.

  29. Solaire of Astora Says:

I wanted him to succeed on name alone best last name ever

  30. Buc1987 Says:

on 2nd thought Andrew 1 statistically your wrong.

The Gallup survey found that 40 percent of Americans consider themselves conservative; 35 percent consider themselves moderate; and 21 percent see themselves as liberal. The figures did not change from 2010.
    This was a recent poll.

  31. Andrew 1 Says:

your right thats enough politics from me. I will say this, with the additions of players from the draft that can play on special teams, I dont think we will miss Grimm in that respect.

  32. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc1987

I dont doubt you one bit. to be honest politics are not really my forte. from now on Ill stick to what I know: football and the bucs. after all this is a football site.

  33. Buc1987 Says:

Yes and I’m sorry to crap on your site Joe with such rhetoric, it shall NEVER happen again.

  34. Andrew 1 Says:

back to the bucs, one thing I am interested to see play out during training camp is who wins the starting job at RT. any thoughts? does anyone REALLY believe Carimi can challenge Dotson? Im hoping this does not become a position of weakness.

Surveys are subjective. There are a lot of conservatives that support Obama. I’m one. It’s not that I agree with everything he’s done. It’s that I agree with more of what he’s done than I agree with what the Republicans have done. As a Christian, I hold true to my beliefs. I vote only for the things I agree with.

But surveys don’t take into consideration people like me who live conservative but vote librral until the conservative party gets their head out of their butts.

And that poll is off anyway…otherwise Obama would not have been re-elected.
