Schiano Talks Competition

June 13th, 2012

Greg Schiano might have given a glimpse into what his roster and or gameday/roster might look like come final cuts in early September.

Talking yesterday about various position battles, Schiano referenced having eight defensive linemen ready when the whistle blows.

“Who’s going to be our guys that go and show up on gameday, those eight guys ready to go. We want to be able to roll eight guys,” Schiano said of his defensive line. “Linebacker, great competition. Secondary, we have some good defensive backs. At the end of the day we’re probably going to have to end up letting go a defensive back that can play in this league. That’s always tough. But that’s a good problem to have, I guess.”

Of course, playing eight defensive linemen doesn’t mean one or two more aren’t on the roster but inactive.

Talking more about competition yesterday, Schiano said he was excited by the battles at wide receiver and running back but conceded that his starting offensive line is all but set. Joe had wondered whether free agent tackle/guard Javon Meredith, signed in March, would compete with Jeremy Trueblood, but that seems unlikely now.

Hers an area where there is a big difference with Rah. Rah had his starters in mind, often influenced by where the rock star drafted them.

This approach is far superior IMO.

Im wondering is Dom will have that head set on telling Greg who he can or can’t put in the game?

    I am thinking no.

I want E.J. Biggers gone. Keep Anthony Gaitor.

  3. The Dutcher Journal (Pete Dutcher) Says:

Biggers has been looking bad on the practice field.

There is one thing I miss about Rah…the daily press conferences during OTAs. Clearly Schiano is not as transparent as Rah…which might be a good thing…but I still miss the flood of information.

  4. ALSTOTTSMART! Says:

Is Lewis still a ghost? Even when rarely healthy, I just don’t hear much about the guy.

  5. Fritz50 Says:

Joe, do you know what’s up with BucStop.com? Learned about the site here & now it’s coming up sometning unrelated to the Bucs. Couldn’t find any other way to communicate with you. I’m not twitter literate.

  6. RCH Says:

Maybe the coaching staff can give Biggers a fresh start but I cant come to forgive him for him loathing around during that Dallas game last year. He needs to prove to me that he should stay in Tampa. Yeah there was probaly others doing it too during that game since it was widely speculated but he stood out like a sore thumb to me.

  7. Thomas2.2 Says:

Did I hear competition at Running Back? Even with the great (fumbling, unreliable in passing game) Blount on the roster we have a competition? Already?

Great to hear! Go muscle hamster!

  8. robert Says:

you guys hating on biggers are crazy. He hung with some good players subbing in for Talib. The guy has the talent, size, speed etc. he’s the only one outside of talib that isn’t either short or slow…or just a zone CB. he’s the only one we can put on the other guys top WR’s. wright is too small, ronde is too old, the others are all to small or too slow. so you better get used to biggers.

Thomas your a big idiot that doesn’t know anything and you are so one sided it’s frustrating to read. You would like Blount to fail? Blount had 1700 yards in his first two seasons, he’s a useful back that has a proven rb coach and a coach that demands him to bite the ball. Stop being a hater, you’re probably a small little man with a big chip on his shoulder because things never seem to go your way, unless your behind a keyboard then you think your a big guy now dont you, little boy.

  10. Andrewbucsfan Says:

I’d love to see both backs reach 1000 total yards how great that would be for our offense.

Signed, a true bucs fan not a depressed, angry, bumbling fool

  11. Jrock Says:

I don’t get the Blount bashing either.

He had 1,000 yards in what, 10 games his first year? He carried the team

Last year he was rarely ever used, we all know the reasons. Still churns out 700 yards.

Lots of good running backs have fixed fumbling problems, I don’t think I need to cite examples. It’s his third year, one which he will be utilized a lot. This is the year to judge his performance (not that his last two were weak, IMO)

    Did Briscoe attend camp?

    Briscoe is at camp. –Joe

  13. Thomas2.2 Says:

    Jrock you are clueless:

Hardly ever used? Blount had 184 carries, 20th in the entire NFL despite missing 1+ games. Blount started 13 games in 2010, he did not play in just 10.

Ben Tate, Fred Jackson, demarco Murray all had fewer carries and over 900 yards – hardly a list of hall of famers. And those guys aren’t chronic fumblers and no blockers and non-factors in the passing game.

I love it how the lies are perpetrated.

The truth is Blount is a backup RB, he is very good when he gets to plus 3 territory untouched but that rarely happens.

  14. Drew Says:

Just ignore T 2.2 and maybe he’ll quietly go away. Then again, that may irritate him and bring out the worst where he starts bashing the posters.

  15. BamBamBuc Says:

YES, Thomas 2.2, you heard Competition. That’s right, your proclaimed starter, 1st round draft choice Doug Martin has NOT been handed the job based on draft status or “all-around” ability. There are at least 2 RBs competing for the starting job in Blount and Martin. We won’t know if Schiano sees something in Madu or Smith to throw them in the mix (regardless of draft status).

Yes you, Thomas. You proclaimed Martin the starter and you are apparently incorrect at this point. No saying Martin won’t WIN the job, but he’s gonna have to fight for it. They’re not handing out starting jobs due to draft status unless the previous guy is gone (Barron starting where Jones is no longer on the team… or David starting in Hayes vacated spot).

  16. BamBamBuc Says:

Oh, and hey Thomas… Adrian Peterson fumbled 4 times his rookie year, 9 times his second year and 7 times his 3rd year. He also had only 19 and 21 receptions his first two years. Peterson averaged 5.6 and 4.8 per carry those first two years (Blount 5.0 and 4.2, 15 receptions his second year, 4 & 5 fumbles the first two seasons). Blount was undrafted, Peterson is a first round draft pick.

Also, don’t perpetrate lies. Blount PLAYED 13 games his rookie year, he STARTED 7. Peterson had the benefit of an off-season with his team both his first two seasons, Blount hasn’t had an off-season workout program with the Bucs YET. Peterson very well may be a future HOF guy…. but by your standards should have been a backup by year 3. Oh wait, he had 3100 yards on 600 carries over those two years. Blount has about 1800 on about 400 carries. Funny enough, MJD had 343 carries last year alone, almost as many as Blount has gotten in 2 years. MJD had about 330 carries his first two seasons for about 1700 yards. So, MJD didn’t start fumbling until his 3rd season (6 fumbles), and didn’t earn the starting nod until his 4th season. Yet he was the rushing leader last year. So, maybe they should have given up on MJD too?

There are too many examples to continues. Keep going, and I’ll keep finding them… There are Pro Bowl RBs and potential Hall of Fame guys that didn’t start as well as Blount.
