Young Defensive Guns Came To Play, Dominate

January 17th, 2021

It wasn’t perfect, but damn, the Buccaneers’ core of young defensive players turned in a heroic and dominant effort tonight against the Saints.

Joe is so freakin’ proud of the secondary for standing tall under a mountain of pressure.

Sean Murphy-Bunting had a huge interceptions and key plays.

Antoine Winfield Jr.’s punch/strip was the play heard across Tampa Bay, scooped up by Devin White for a return that led to a game-tying score in the third-quarter.

Jamel Dean shook off a bad penalty to have a key pass defensed on third down. And there was more love to go around, but Joe really has to give it up for White and what his return meant to the defense. Like Vita Vea, White is not replaceable and his impact after two lost games due to The Sickness was felt tonight. His fourth-quarter interception was one of the great plays in Bucs history.

Even ballhawk backup safety Mike Edwards got into the action with a late interception.

Collectively, the defense made Drew Brees look like Mike Glennon, and where was Michael Thomas? Zero catches.

What a monster confidence boost for the defense heading to the NFC Championship game in Green Bay.

I deeply dislike the Saints, they are a very cocky and mouthy team, glad we beat them IN THEIR HOUSE TOO!

  19. adam from ny Says:

the rojo and lenny show is good to go

  20. adam from ny Says:

    started slow and shaky…

saints were talking mad sheet too…

played a little dirty in piles too…

eventually we got our feet under us and then…

it became the defense and devin white show…

amazing to beat the saints with literally little to no game from our big 3 receivers

  21. Davenport Says:

We got away from the weak ass zone that Bowles loves. Man with 2 deep safeties is the way to go next week.

I just don’t understand where 58 & 90 have been the past few weeks. Barrett is leaving alot of money on the table for 2021.

  22. Coburn Says:

Good for smn and white. Both made plays in coverage. SMB always been a. Guy you want to like because he does the other little things well and comes across as smart, but just got beat too many time before. Good for him. Hopefully play more man next week and hopefully frustrate Rodgers again. Managed to do it tonight without actually hitting Brees much

  23. TiltedRedMan Says:

    D White MVP

  24. Brandon Says:

If Rojo was healthy or if Fournette could break any tackles at all we would’ve destroyed them. That penalty on SMB was crazy. Great performance by D and excellent coming out party for White. He is the future at Mike in the NFL. Best plays in coverage of his career.

  29. Destinjohnny Says:

    We can beat the pack
Was more worried about the saints

  30. Oneilbucs Says:

Adam I agree with you bro I know the media and the fan base is going to make it all about Brady but it was the defense and us running the ball .

  31. Oxycondoms Says:

What a blessing that numbet 7 didnt play for the saints. Couldve been the difference between 2 tds instead of 2fgs in first half

  32. TampaTown Says:

Did anyone hear the name Cam Jordan? Nope

  33. BringBucsBack Says:

Props to the “D”, for sure. Someone was saying all week that Drew couldn’t throw the deep ball. He was correct, Drew couldn’t!

The Pack are better than the first meeting & Rogers can move & throw the deep ball. It should be cold as a witches nipple up there, too.

Let’s go Bucs! I wanna change my freakin’ screen name!!

  34. ocala Says:

Bucs had an incredible draft this year:

Wirfs OT – Possibly best RT in the NFL
Winfield S -Already one of the best safeties in the NFL
Vaughn RB – has shown some promise
Johnson WR -possibly had the best catch of any NFL player this year
Davis DL -a promising prospect that was in the rotation in this playoff game

  35. Jason From Jamrock Says:

Cam Jordan was almost right …
… the Saints WERE in our heads!!

  36. Jason From Jamrock Says:

Big concern though – SAVOURING THE VICTORY, of course …
… where was the pass rush??

  37. View from 132 Says:

    Press coverage. Thank you.

  38. Bucamania Says:

Now THAT’S what I’m talking about! Boys came to play tonight. Woooooooo!

  39. unbelievable Says:

Mad props to Devin White for that play!

He has been a huge liability in the passing game, I don’t think anyone could argue otherwise. But when we needed it most, he came up with a HUGE play that change the game. Instead of 27-23 Saints, we went up 30-20! Can’t overstate enough how critical that was.

Hats off to the defense. After a genuinely awful start to the game by both our offense and special teams, the defense came to play! Finally!

  40. Big Marlon B Says:

I’m really proud of Murphy Bunting. He took his lumps during the regular season….costly penalties, and seemed like he got beat for more TDs than any other CB. But he has shown up big time these last 2 weeks. Interceptions in back to back games (surpassing his season total), deflected passes, big open field tackle on a TE he gave up 50 lbs to, and gutting it out after getting dinged up twice. Lots of guys made huge plays, but it’s nice to see him elevate his play when it matters most. Keep ballin kid!

  41. lambchop Says:

For whoever said SMB was a bust. Lmfao. He’s not lights out, he’s not perfect, he’s not an island, but damn does he make some important plays every now and then. FAR from being a bust at his draft position. Kudos to D White and Winfield Jr and Carlton Davis (bounce back game from a personal standpoint).

Let’s keep this attitude of expecting to win rolling. I’ll cry if the Bucs have a home SB game in Tampa. But, Packers first. DeVante Adams will be healthier and a headache.
