Preparing For A Move?

October 21st, 2020

Shuffling cash.

This got Joe’s attention on an otherwise boring Wednesday.

Per Field Yates of BSPN, Bucs guard Ali Marpet, who may be having his best season since drafted in 2015, had his contract reworked.

Now last week Joe read the Bucs had some $2 million in cap space. That was before the Bucs traded for Jets defensive tackle Steve McLendon, who per Spotrac.com was only collecting $808,000.

Obviously that $2 million and change was there to pay for players the Bucs may have to sign in case of injuries (read: McLendon).

Could the additional cap space as a result of Marpet’s contract being reworked mean the Bucs are trying to swing a deal before the trade deadline of Nov. 3?

Very interesting timing on the reworked Marpet contract.

Maybe another pass rusher? Who’s still available?

  2. WiscoJoe Says:

Clay Matthews?? Depth at all linebacker spots if they get him. He played middle linebacker his last year or two in Green Bay.

  3. 813bucboi Says:

i hoping for another pass rusher….

    GO BUCS!!!!

  4. gotbbucs Says:

I don’t know what position they’d be going after right now. Jets and Jags are probably the only two teams that might be trying to fire sale before the deadline.
I would guess more defensive depth if anything.

  5. AJ Says:

Do we want the headache that is Antonio Brown???

  6. JimBuc2 Says:

If dollars are tight I suggest Bucs give Shady McCoy the boot. The guy doesn’t produce much. Either tighten up one of our studs, or bolster our depth. We will be playi significant games in January and injuries do happen.

  7. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I would think if anyone, it would be a defensive player….

Not enough to work an early deal for Godwin…..but maybe something like that.

  8. Teflon Don OG Says:

    Hopefully its Geno Atkins

  9. Gofortheface30 Says:

813 – agree. After Barrett and JPP it’s somewhat slim. The Mclendon deal was brilliant though, hear he’s an amazing locker room guy and was so excited to join Bucs that he just stayed in Miami after game and immediately rented a car to drive up here. Time to retire this whole thing about Licht being a bad GM. He should be telling everyone “YOURE WELCOME” for Suh/Shaq/JPP/Dean/Davis/Todd freakin Bowles. Top to bottom we may have the most complete team in the league, thanks to JL

  10. 813bucboi Says:

falcons may have a fire sale too….

maybe they give up dante fowler….

john ross just requested a trade from the bengals….

    eagles and derek barnett?

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  11. Davenport Buc Says:

JimBuc2 — i agree, Shady is done, he looks slow. Thing is he is a veteran on the opening day roster so his salary is guaranteed for the year.

  12. LVMYBUCS Says:

    Earl Thomas ?

  13. 813bucboi Says:

    face30

    i’ll thank JL….lol…

i bashed him for years but he’s finally getting the job done…imo, it was lack of player development from the previous staff but thats another story for another day….

a pass rusher would be ideal imo….The Mclendon deal was indeed brilliant…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  14. Danny C Says:

Man! How exciting has this season been so far and we have so much left of it.

PS – I wouldn’t mind seeing Shady gone. He really has nothing left, I wish Ke’shawn had more playing time. I also want Fournette in the mix.

  15. 813bucboi Says:

    BIG NO TO EARL!!!

our secondary is gelling nicely imo….let them continue to grow….

but we all know how much licht loves CBs…lol…

    GO BUCS!!!!

  16. Tampabuscsbro Says:

I would want another CB honestly.

Also We have two good starting safeties and one good backup. Don’t need one there.

  17. Joe Says:

Do we want the headache that is Antonio Brown???

    No for many reasons.

  18. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Maybe they just wanted a cushion

  19. Bird Says:

Clay matthews could be had for 1.5 – 2 mil

    Make that happen now.

  20. JimBuc2 Says:

@Davenport. Props man. You know vet comp rules better than me. Thanks for both the mention and the heads up. Class all the way.
    Go Bucs!

  21. Buc4ever Says:

Mohamed Sanu would be a good backup when Evans or Godwin can’t go. Kind of like Perriman last year.

  22. AtlBuc Says:

No Joe. It’s for AB. He becomes eligible next week and he will reunite with Brady. Normally, I would say that this wouldn’t happen. But all of our receivers are injured and this move will give them time to heal properly

  23. Hodad Says:

Please no to AB. Head case. Clay Matthews is washed up, no to him too.

  24. Anonymous Says:

blocking tight end. Gronk gonna miss a few by season’s end

  25. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with bro. Biggest need probably is at CB.

  26. 813bucboi Says:

    atlbuc

it very well could be for AB…

i wouldnt be jumping up and down if we got him but i wouldnt be livid either….

AB could open up things even more for the offense….

but im hoping for a pass rusher….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  27. Joe Says:

blocking tight end. Gronk gonna miss a few by season’s end

Antony Auclair’s coming back at some point. He’s a good blocker (and very inexpensive).

  28. Bird Says:

Clay matthews had 8 sacks in backup role Last year.

    Yah. Thats washed up.
He can play limited snaps. Keep guys fresh.
He is high energy. Great leader. And he won a super bowl. Sounds like a no brainer to me.

And he commented on wanting to come here for brady.
He would take peanuts – since almost half way thru season.

  29. WyomingBucsFan Says:

We’re probably going to sign Antonio Brown. I mean why not? Don’t tell he’s going to mess up the locker room, Brady is not going to let that happen.

  30. Dre_Ghsotjr. Says:

Tbh whitehead is a great tackler BUT i mean has he showed up this year at all?
Mike edwards is making a statement that he wants to start! He’s making plays every time he gets a chance and whitehead is just mehhh…so i definitely would agree with the signing of Earl Thomas good. He’s a good vet in locker room and he could provide great presence on the backend. But it probably won’t happen, my guess is AB. I love him as a player but character off the field is definitely worrisome! Brady is AB number 1 advocate in the NFL and with the WR core banged up we could have a chance to sign a top 10 WR for pennies! *sounds like a Patriots move to me* and if JL and BA wants to win NOW! Then this is definitely a nice move to consider. Orrrr reality about the NFL business side is we may just want some cushion for future injuries to come

  31. Darin Says:

    Buc4ever
I wouldn’t doubt if it was another WR. We’ve seen how they decline when Godwin and/or Evans are out. I could also see McCoy get cut and pick up another receiving back. Whatever it is Please keep playing close to mistake free football! The playoffs Would taste great if we can eat enough W’s!!

  32. pick6 Says:

Already in week 6, there is no shortage of teams whose seasons are totally in the toilet and see more value in losing and dumping players for draft picks than in competing right now. Don’t know what position the bucs might target, but i can guess 4 or 5 teams that we might get a respectable starter from while they chase a top 3 draft pick

  33. Mickmam Says:

How about using it to renew a existing player, like Golston Suh or even Godwin in year to spread the cap charge

  34. Defense Rules Says:

Bucs don’t really need any 1-year rental guys at this point, with one exception: a pass-rusher. JPP & Shaq are both playing like 90% of the defensive snaps. If one of them gets dinged up for several games (or more), our pass rush would be hurting, big-time.

Nelson’s starting to come on a little, but he’s only getting around 15 snaps a game. Not really accomplishing all that much IMO, except they do seem to be blitzing him quite a bit. OLB’s Quinton Bell & Cam Gill don’t seem to be adding much (as in 0 defensive snaps each) so we’d be hurting if JPP or Shaq goes down.

Yup, without JPP or Shaq our defense would probably be very much different. Might be a good idea to bring in some help there since we still have 10 regular season games to go plus 3-4 playoff games?

  35. Chris Boyd Says:

so i know that you can roll over extra cap money at the end of the year to the next year somehow, right? is it possible that maybe they’re doing that so that they have the extra money next year to resign david and godwin? i’m not exactly sure how the cap works, but i’m pretty sure there’s a way to roll it over

  36. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Potential Target “If” we make a move
    1. WR – Julian Edelman
    2. TE – Zach Ertz
    3. OLB – Clay Matthews

  37. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Acquiring WR Julian Edelman will allow Tom Brady –
to efficiently attack all three levels of the football field.

  38. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Plus it allow Mike Evans a couple weeks to heal for this title run.

  39. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

    i would rather develop tyler johnson…kid doesnt seem overwhelmed….and he’s flashed….

i thought ertz just got hurt…

clay wouldnt be a bad option….

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  40. LUVMYBUCS Says:

    813

I hear you. And his time will come.
But since time is of the essence- I’d rather Brady have all his necessary pieces for this tile run.

  41. LUVMYBUCS Says:

You can trade for players on injured reserve.
Plus its only an ankle injury.

  42. 813bucboi Says:

    LUV

i thought he had a more serve injury….

if brady feels he needs edelman, go for it….

kamalei correa:DE/OLB requested a trade from the titans after their game…jon and jason are tight….he could help the defense…

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  43. Ricky Says:

    A.B ?

  44. BucEmUp Says:

Im guessing its antonio brown. Brady wants him and we have seen how bad the offense is when the wrs are banged up Im betting its antonio brown

  45. DaBux Says:

Obviously, we’re giving a huge pay raise and extension to our kicker.

  46. Ricky Says:

Maybe we extend David’s contract now?

  47. Fernando Says:

    Cut McCoy he’s done
    Sign a pass rusher

  48. LUVMYBUCS Says:

Would be crazy if its Jet’s DT Quinnen Williams

  49. Orlampa Turd Says:

    STYLEZ G. WHITE

  50. Issac haggins Says:

I get the cut MCCoy talk but until Vaughn shows he can catch an NFL football he must stay ……….Brady has to have a rb that can catch

  51. MtBucsfan Says:

    Need to resign LVD!

  52. Timbo Slice Says:

I think the Secondary or Clay Matthews would be the long term move, however with Godwin and Evans both battling injuries this season a fresh 3rd receiver would be nice too.
