Playoffs?

April 6th, 2020

Rants on Bucs.

See what Tom Brady has done for the Bucs?

Every since there were rumors of the six-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback coming to Tampa Bay, the arguing shows on BSPN and FS1 have been talking Brady and Bruce Arians and the Bucs every day.

Today, Joe brings you a full 1:43 of screamin’ Stephen A. Smith rambling about the Bucs. How does that grab you?

SAS talks about the new playoff format and he hopes the Bucs are able to squeeze out a wild card berth over a certain NFC team that, if it happens, SAS said will make his Christmas wishes come true.

Buckle up!

  1. Swampbuc Says:

The Bucs are the 2020 Browns. Everyone had the Browns in the Super Bowl .

    Then reality hit.

It’s the NFL and it’s the Bucs.

    7-9

Brady goes out in week three with a concussion and a torn rotter cuff, and Blaine Goobert finsishes off the Bucs playoff chances with a 1-8 stretch before Ryan Griffin comes in for the final games.

  2. ©MadMax Says:

Thats right! We’re playing January football!

Put money on it….you’ll be glad! 1K for me!

  3. Bucsfan951 Says:

I just can’t see the Bucs making the playoffs this season. I want to believe. I really do. But how have they gotten better? Yes, obviously the qb change. Is a 43 yr old Brady better than Jw? Only time will tell for sure. But they resigned the same 7-9 players from last yr. Lets be honest, while JW threw games away (my opinion), it’s not like the defense didn’t give it up faster than a prom date.

This team still lacks a rt, a true rb, any type of depth at the o line and receiver spots, an older (still productive?) d line, questionable young cbs with zero depth behind them, and very sketchy safeties.

Playoffs? Let’s talk about that around Halloween time!

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

The defense alone should keep this team competitive in each game, combine that without 30 ints from your qb, an extra playoff spot and a playoff atmosphere at Ray Jay that hasn’t been seen in years I’d bet money we make the playoffs this year.

  5. Alaskan Abdominal Snowman Says:

SwampBuc- Those two situations are not comparable. I knew the Browns would fail last year and it had nothing to do with hype. Hype won’t make a team suck but having a coach that has no head coaching experience, little play calling experience, and a bunch of inflated egos in the locker room can.

If you didn’t notice the culture shift in last years team then you weren’t paying attention. This team was in every single game except maybe the one Saints game with TB, and that’s with 30 Ints and like 5 more fumbles. The professionalism and accountability is here on this team now and gets taken a few notches up with Brady coming in.

The browns had a bunch of puzzle pieces with no puzzle master. We got the puzzle master and found a huge missing piece in Brady. We just need a few more things and The Playoffs would be the floor for this team and for the fan’s expectations.

  6. Soberinsac Says:

I’ll talk playoffs today. Some Bucs fans are so used to losing. Your afraid to be positive cuz it’s just gonna let you down. This is different hell with it. Get excited talk smack to your buddies cuz it’s on like donkey Kong. Our Buccaneers are relevant again and I’m going to enjoy it. Other than a nice decade of great great defense we have sucked. We have some damn good players again and I for one think the Buccaneers are playoffs bound and can do some serious damage.

  7. ©MadMax Says:

^^ @Sober, thats right….(sorry, im not sober, but not drunk yet)

I look at it like this….The Brady move hurts some people. They lost their boy. OK, now its time to move on. But some of them cant. So what do you do. I just dont argue with them….is what it is. Intelligent people know whats about to happen! This is why I was calling for Brady many times….and look at us now baby! Glazers have their finger on the pulse 🙂

  8. 541BucsFan Says:

The hype train will only continue gaining momentum after the draft and through camp.

    All aboard!

  9. David Says:

The defense was a top 10 defense the second half of the year. They got better and better. The secondary is young and improving. The D line should improve simply because JPP will be back. White is back at LB.
add another DE and DB and this defense is getting real good.
And let’s not forget VEA! He’s probably already the third best DT in the league and getting better.

Offense, they need a RB and an OT.

Not a lot of holes. The defense cost a game or two early on. Jameis cost them probably three games with turnovers.

Defenses is better simply because they’re young and improving.
The offense is better because they’re going to have at least 15 fewer turnovers.

    They should win 10+ games.
The biggest obstacle will be lack of preparation due to this virus early on.

  10. David Says:

    SWAMPBUC
    and
    BUCFAN951

Browns?!? They don’t have a coach.

Bucs D? Young and only getting better. Second half of the season they were top 10 defense

Jameis cost them a 10 win season with all his turnovers.
You can get rid of at least 15 of them with the quarterback change.

Add OT and RB and DB or DLine and a QB in the first 4 picks ….

    11 wins

  11. Defense Rules Says:

Pure speculation based on a bunch of ASSUMPTIONS. Reality is that the Bucs are 0-0 in 2020, just like the other 31 NFL teams. Reality is that we finished 2019 with a 7-9 record, have changed our QB but nothing else … YET. Other than the addition of Tom Brady, the Bucs have added Haeg on offense (probably not a starter?) but lost Allen & Nassib on defense (two rotational DLinemen). That’s it. And that’s where the assumptions come in.

Many seem to be ASSUMING that our defense will pick up where they left off last season, and that we’ll do that with a minimal infusion of new talent on defense. Others are ASSUMING that our offense will still be high-scoring but with a lot fewer turnovers. Another apparent ASSUMPTION in there is that our OLine improves enough to protect Brady (47 sacks would not go over well) and that our running game improves considerably as well. No one even talks about our Special Teams needing to improve big-time (they didn’t exactly set the world on fire last season), so there’s another ASSUMPTION.

Underlying all of that IMO is the ASSUMPTION that the Bucs can effectively close the remaining HOLES in our starting lineups before the season starts. All we’ve got available to do that is (1) the draft; and (2) about $10 mil in salary Cap money. We STILL NEED a starting RT & RB and probably a veteran starting Safety, as well as probably 2 DLinemen (to replace Allen & Nassib) and a slot WR. Signing a quality veteran backup QB wouldn’t hurt either. So there’s probably 3 starters, 3 key rotational players plus a backup QB still needed, not to mention improving our DEPTH in several position groups. But hey, assumptions aren’t real anyways. It’s only April so let’s ASSUME that we win the Super Bowl.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I join SAS with my disgust of the Cowboys…..if they lose, I’ve had a good sports weekend…..

As for the playoffs…..I definitely think it’s possible……Brady, coupled with the extra birth along with a more developed young secondary……our front 7 intact…..
Playoffs, more than just a pipe dream.

  13. Bucsgotachance..todonothing Says:

Okay…some of you guys are more dramatic then the shows you watch with you wife\husbands…we need mostly depth and comp at a few spots..starting with rb..we should trade for a rb or draft the best one if we see a everydown back get him..oline personally i think the center is over paid i haven’t seen top dollar performances from him at all. I think i trade him and get a brady friendly center and leader for the line…lt lg are both going to do their jobs most the time..leaving us the right side..rg wasnt great nor horrible..lacks the push on the run but look ok in pass protection..serviceable i would draft comp for him in camp a guy who can play c rg n rt..a depth player who could challenge someone’s job…ok rt the worst position we have..if we go with the new guy from the colts then we need to have a te who can help him cause his tape doesn’t scream underdog or world beater…so rt is a must to shop draft or after market cuts..te we should be running single back te on both sides every play or double load them on the right with godwin..buy accounting for Bruce play style and pref to have a gunner in at slot..i assume alot of scotty miller n possibly a 3rd or 4th rd pick that he hopes brady can make look great..its that or do some cap moves or trades..brate restructured doubt hes on the ma4ket oj still rookie contract ..i think they hold off restructuring on mike till they go to resign chris..so looking at available players on off to trade to allow them to acquire needs is slim other then the center…defensive side they gotta keep everybody n get more..the need draft dt for depth and hopeful replacement of suh…his money goes to godwin next year..we need potentially another de and ofcourse a safety ball hawk..i see a safety dt or wr in the 4rds ..1 threw 3 will be rb tackle gaurd..i see us trying to solidify the rest of the oline early..which could be tough on young guys to come in but hey its not my job to coach them…personally i haven’t study no one coming out yet or picked who i think will be the beast i tend to start a week before the draft…i will say i highly doubt we go qb this year..it would be a wasted pick unless the guy is special n a steal..to many wholes in the starting line up..we need more muscle in the trenches..n that ball hawk in the 2ndary ..i could get deeper but it is what it is..in brady we trust

  14. Pewter Power Says:

Definitely more possible than when Winston was under center, no one was talking playoffs with him. With all the interceptions our Record probably would have been worse if not for defense scoring most touchdowns in team history

  15. Oneilbucs Says:

Playoffs is not good enough . Superbowl or bust this quarterback is 43 years old and plus Jamies was the reason why we lost according to the people on this site and fanbase !!!!! We have every thing a good offensive line and a good defense according to the fanbase .

  16. WhatTheBuc Says:

It’s so funny to hear people cry about not have depth behind our top 3 corners. Someone please tell me the name of a top level #4 corner for any team in the NFL. Who has a solid vet waiting for his chance to get in the game? The answer is no one. Just last season we had zero trustworthy corners. Now we have 3 good ones and people are crying like sad little bitchez about it. We have Smith and Wilkins and probably adding depth in the draft. Don’t cry little girl. Go take your meds now.

  17. passthebuc Says:

In this case, you win by subtraction. Minus 20+ interceptions. They will win the division.

  18. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

The best part is the Super Bowl or bust part. Seen a NFC South title lately? JC just give us a division title to start. 3rd or 4th every year just doesn’t cut it. And that defense kept us in a lot of games even having to be on the field after 30 fricking interceptions and 7 fumbles. All we needed was a mediocre defense they told us. It’s almost as if people forget that the other 31 teams also score TDs. Defense can not and will not be able to shut down offenses every damn week.

37 turnovers from the QB alone. Your new QB had 8 picks and 4 fumbles. I’m guessing your defense benefits having more bench time between turnovers. Just a guess though.

  19. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

    O’Neillbucs

Your right it’s super bowl or bust because wherever Jameis lands he’s leading them to the Super Bowl and multiple rings. We were told. Any idea who we’ll be playing in the SB this year? Let us know when you find out. Any moment now we should have word. Wait for it.

  20. adam from ny Says:

the browns were a mess…and kitchens didn’t coach right either…

the bucs are simply not that…

a lot of veteran presence here, on both sides of the ball…

this team is not built on hype and swag…

how it all comes together shall be interesting…

10 wins seems logical, maybe more…

7-9 would be a real problem in tampa …

i have us early on at about 11-5 and in the playoffs…but no superbowl birth…

that all comes in 2021 as we go 14-3 and roll over the entire league to a championship

  21. rrsrq Says:

if the 49ers can go from worst to first, why can’t the Bucs do the same. its simple as that

  22. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Swampbuc Says:
“Brady goes out in week three with a concussion and a torn rotter cuff, and Blaine Goobert finsishes off…”

If Brady goes out, ‘Goobert’ might go in for a couple plays, then get injured. Then Jacob Eason will start.

  23. Bucnjim5656 Says:

Not sure how many games JPP missed last year but they are a much better D with him on the field. Some fans downplay the need for on the field leadership but I feel it is extremely important especially in crunch time.

  24. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

We’re going to the Superbowl if Brady stays healthy. Going to feel so nice!

  25. stpetebucsfan Says:

I’ve done this before but perhaps it bears repeating on this thread.

Seems we have three types here looking ahead to the season…the nattering nabobs of negativity…some of them are just acting out because “their” guy was sent packing…some are acting out of years of dashed hopes…it’s a Buc’s life.

Some…very few IMO are like D.R. who I suspect pilot’s training keeps him totally objective and pragmatic…neither negative nor positive…able to see both the challenges and possibilities.

Then there is the group that includes me who simply say eff it…I’m a Buc’s fan and I’m going down fighting with hope and expectation. This means until the Bucs stink it up this year…I and others like me will assume THE BEST. If it turns out to be the WORST…what have we lost…six months of excitement and hope! I simply do not plan to waste this excitement for the next six months…there’ll be time enough to count the W-L’s when the playin’s done.

Back to this article….many things to be excited about…most of it of course around TB12 but what truly pleases me is that I’m reading folks who base their optimism on our D and the way we played the second half of 2019.

We signed everybody we need and as someone said imagine believing that three talented young 2nd and 3rd year players will continue to progress.

We can draft to fill our holes…RT..RB…Safety. There of course will ALWAYS be depth issues in the cap era…for ALL teams. We are no exception. So like all teams we’ll need “The Luck or the Irish” to stay healthy. Most playoff teams have good seasons in terms of games lost by their stars. We just need the same thing.

  26. stpetebucsfan Says:

My son lives in Columbus and is a HUGE Browns fan…2-3 games a year he makes the drive.

What he has told me is exactly what Alaskan posted.

We are NOTHING like the Browns…Brady is NOTHING like Mayfield who may yet turn out to be their JW. My son is worried. My son said from the outset that Freddie Kitchens was in way over his head..a rookie with a team of major EGO’s.

OBJ has talent but he’s not the team player that ME…CG…OJ..and Brate.

BA is NOT Kitchens…I remember a year or two after their SB that the Falcons got a lot of hype…perhaps we’re more like them.

  27. Jean Lafitte Says:

IDC what you debbiedowners say. For the first time in 5 seasons I actually feel more confident going into the season that we’ll finish above .500. I didn’t have that confidence with Mr. ATM.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

Swampbuc…that’s an awful lot of BS to see in one crystal ball. 🙂

  29. Defense Rules Says:

@StPete … “Then there is the group that includes me who simply say eff it…I’m a Buc’s fan and I’m going down fighting with hope and expectation.”

LMAO StPete. For folks in my previous profession that usually starts with the words ‘You stay high #2, I’m going in”. Followed shortly by ‘Oh crap, bad mistake’.

  30. stpetebucsfan Says:

    D.R.

In another life I wanted to fly jets off an Aircraft Carrier. Almost got into Annapolis. Don’t know if I would have washed out. Flown enough weird aircraft from ultralights to homebuilt biplanes to know I had the skill set.

But now in my “maturity” I realize that perhaps I would have been that guy who said…”I’m goin in followed by Oh crap bad mistake.

I get your old saying…their are bold pilots…there are old pilots but there are no old bold pilots. I always had more balls than common sense so I probably would have been a good candidate to wash out.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

    @Bucsgotachance

When I finally focused my eyes I found your post thoughtful.

If you wish to post longer items a tip…white space is your friend. Some separation of sentences and certainly paragraphs will make your stuff more readable.

Since you seem to be a thoughtful guy I hope this can help because I would enjoy reading your posts going forward.

  32. Mike Johnson Says:

You pay a 43 yr old..end of career QB 50 mil and all you want is the playoffs?
You’d better demand Superbowl..nothing less. And you guys actually expect gabbert to take us on when the golden boy goes down huh?..You are delusional as hell Buc fans. Confidence is one thing. But hopin and prayin is another.

  33. StRicKn Says:

A lot of ppl on here are taking how the Bucs are not gonna make playoffs and they’re not that good. These ppl don’t watch the games or are just not that smart when it comes to football. We got the best front 7 in football with a surging secondary. Brady gets rid of the ball a lot quicker than JAMEIS that’s for sure. Our offense will get better through draft. The one player we really, Really need to play at high level is Matt Gay. He needs to improve and be steady for us to make a Super Bowl push. I would say this team talent and coach wise is playoff ready. Go Bucs!

Oh goody, we have Wilkins and Smith behind our 3 very young and very unproven cbs. I mean, why bring in some form of competition for them? You can feel comfortable knowing Smith is backing them up but I don’t. I mean, Stewart can come in as well, right? Smh.

Not sure if you knew it or not but dean has had knee issues in college. You may feel comfortable with that but I don’t!

  35. SOEbuc Says:

When none of ALL these people don’t mention how good the Bucs D could be next year let’s me know they know jack sh!t about this team. They don’t mention we were a top run stopping D and a guy on a one year contract beat Sapp’s sack record by 3.5 sacks in one year with Bowels. Lots of idiot analyst don’t know Bucs but SAS is the dumbest and most annoying.

  36. stpetebucsfan Says:

If we expect to get a Super Bowl from paying a guy 25 million a year…with bonuses what would we have expected from one making 30 million a year?

Let’s see…30 million a year for a guy who hasn’t even played in a single playoff a guy with a Losing record…versus 25 million for a guy with six rings. Somehow that doesn’t compute for a lot of us.

  37. stpetebucsfan Says:

    SOEbucs

I agree except the good news is that more and more of the writeups I’m reading do mention the dramatic improvement of our D and the three young DB’s and Devon White along with resigning all the critical pieces up front is frequently mentioned.

BTW SOEbucs…I’m not for Edelman at all..that was one of the imposters who used three of our names yesterday to post stuff that was the opposite of what we believe. I’m in the school that believes we have enough targets already and will be adding another in an RB who can catch as well as the myriad opportunities to get another WR late in the draft or even like Hump as a UDFA.

  38. Nate Says:

I don’t understand the ALL OUT “pessimists” aka #haterzonthelow …..

How many games were we beating the playoff teams yall talk about …

The Tennessee’s n Houston’s of the league….the giants we lost what 31-33 cuz of a kick but moreso we gave up a 28-13 lead sumin like that

    Because of way miss

The D was 5 -12 in every category but 2nd to last in points cause of short fields every min

FOOTBALL 101..if your #1 against the run your gonna be lower against the pass because teams always pass

The D is alot better with better efficiency at QB
