Inside The Brady Upgrade

April 5th, 2020

“Jameis, we’re going bigger, and you’re going home.”

There’s another stupid new sports acronym out there: WWBIOJ.

And a former Buccaneers quarterback helped bring an Xs and Os perspective to it.

The acronym WWBIOJ (pronounced WOW-bee-ahhj) stands for Wins With Brady Instead Of Jameis. Everybody’s talking about it in one form or another.

Some fans really believe the Bucs would have won 12 games last season with Brady instead of Jameis Winston (a WWBIOJ of 5). Others see 10 wins in the rearview mirror.

Whatever Brady means going forward is an unknown. But Joe is on record as viewing the Bucs as a 10-win team right now, and Joe will revise that total after the draft and other moves (by all teams) before the season.

Former Bucs quarterback, NBC Sports analyst and University of South Florida assistant coach Shaun King weighed in on what the arrival of Brady will mean on the field for Tampa Bay.

King was adamant that Bucco Bruce Arians will step on the gas as it relates to his high-octane offense — because he knows Brady can handle the road conditions.

“When you have a quarterback that’s as experienced as Tom Brady, that also understands his limitations, you can be very aggressive as a playcaller because he’ll check the ball down,” King told WDAE radio. “So you can call aggressive pass plays because he’ll get you a completion for four yards on first down instead of forcing the ball into double coverage. You know, he’ll move in the pocket subtly and find the second and third options and find completions. I think this is why Bruce, from the very beginning, was so enamored with the possibility of bringing [Brady] into this situation. Because we do have elite talent on the edges and now you have a guy that understands how to manage the game and still be aggressive.”

Joe thinks King nailed it here.

The Bucs are loaded with pass catchers. So expect Arians to be a little more fearless about using them because he has a smarter, seasoned and more savvy quarterback.

King added that he’d love to see the Bucs add a good pass-catching running back to take pressure off the offensive line. He also said Brady is one of the best in NFL history to recognize blitzes and change protections, and that element will be a huge upgrade over Jameis.

The “real” fans just hope that ole stale biscuit does not try to “fix” Brady!!!!!!!! As we all know how that would end!!!!!!!!!!!

    go bucs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Jean Lafitte Says:

I think he’s reading the JBF comment section because that’s exactly what I said a few days ago.

  3. Pick6King Says:

    Jamoist = Failure

    Brady = Success

    Joe = Discredited

  4. Marine Buc Says:

Where will Winston go next season? Is it possible he won’t find a single team who is willing to take him in? Not even as a backup? He might need to lower his asking price. Tell his slick haired a-hole agent Drew Rosenhaus to shove his $30 million plus where the sun don’t shine.

Let’s not forget there are still a handful of decent QBs who will be looking for work after the draft – Cam Newton, Andy Dalton, Joe Flacco, Bortles, Stanton – just to name a few.

  5. Jaywill Says:

The problem with King’s statement is Arians told Winston he would yell at him if he threw the checkdown instead of throwing to a double covered Evans or Godwin because it felt they were the better option. He has said in interviews multiple times.

  6. ParrishBucsfan Says:

    Rosenhaus is not his agent

  7. ParrishBucsfan Says:

Was still asking way too much

  8. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

I was told that Jameis was going on to win a super bowl ring. But you’re telling me he hasn’t even found a team yet? That’s strange. Because both of those statements can’t be true at the same time.

  9. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Parrish

Your right. My bad. Shaq Barrett’s agent is Drew Rosenhaus. Got them mixed. Winston’s agent is Joel Segal.

  10. Jean Lafitte Says:

    Jaywill

wrong, Arians had said if Jameis gets into the habit of throwing to the check down like so many young QB’s do before looking at deeper options he would get upset. He has never said to force it into double coverage.

  11. Youngbucs Says:

Now the Winston nut huggers will say this is slander. But it is the truth they act like Winston is told to force the ball lol. He been doing that spit way before Bruce was around. These same lame excuses will follow him to his next team just u watch he is held accountable for nothing lol. Well almost nothing the Bucs finally grew a pair thank god.

  12. Rob in Land O Lakes Says:

If I’m not mistaken Joe, isn’t Shaun King one of three QB’s to take the Bucs to a championship game? I think I read that somewhere. 🙂

  13. Jmarkbuc Says:

No matter where you land on the JW Spectrum, it should be a win win for everyone. If you’re actually a Bucs fan that is.

If we’re trying to prove that the QB has been the biggest problem, no better way than going out and getting the 🐐. It’s an intriguing crucible. It should be a great time to be a Buc fan.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

  14. Dan Says:

No team should waste there time with Winston he’s a proven bust and should find work in something else he loves.

  15. Defense Rules Says:

It’s difficult as a fan IMO to really know how much of a, upgrade Tom Brady will make for this offense (and TEAM). I’m anticipating upgrades in 4 areas as a minimum:

    1 – Leadership (kinda obvious).
2 – Play modification at the line (Brady excellent at reading defenses and checking out of plays … result: fewer ‘lost’ plays).
3 – Progressions (Brady seemingly much faster at running through his progressions than Jameis was).
4 – Accuracy (again Result: fewer lost plays).

Now the Bucs OLine has to protect him AND give him a respectable running game so defenses can’t just key on the passing game.

  16. Marine Buc Says:

    @ defense

    Agreed 100%. Well put.

  17. J Says:

His agent asking for 30mill didn’t help his narrow situation either; JW believing he was worth that is hilarious.

If I’m not mistaken Joe, isn’t Shaun King one of three QB’s to take the Bucs to a championship game? I think I read that somewhere.

Sean King was one of two Buc QBs to lose a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 9 or points….

    Rams 9–0 Doug Williams
St. Louis 11-6 (safety) Sean King

  19. SB Says:

Jameis may have to go back to baseball

  20. Adrnagy Says:

Blindness has caught up on a lot of folks.

    Truth.
Whatever Brady means going forward is an unknown.

Exactly. Those who believe Tom is still playing elite are drinking too much toilet water.
Brady is old and washed up. He couldn’t make it happen last year with patriots. He couldn’t develop his receivers. Patriots receivers were good.
Edelman. Sanu. N Harris. Along with Michel, bulkhead , white. And #1 defense. Come on. Ask yourself , why did bill Belichick let Brady go ? If he’s still elite why?
So it’s more those who are sprung with Brady that are blind.

  21. Adrnagy Says:

Patriots did a good job hiding Tom Brady’s age and deterioration.

  22. Adrnagy Says:

Bucs are going to be the one to exposed Tom age and downfall.

Patriots = great oline no hits.
Bucs = mystery oline a bunch of hits.

Patriots winning = great defense , kicking, play calling
Bucs losing = half defense, bad kicking, leftwhich.

It’s good. Why ? All the blame was on jameis. Now it will be on licht. Bruce and bandwagoneers.

  23. America’s Turnover Machine Says:

.. but we know for sure that 5 years lost with cra.py QB, and terrible leader/persons…THANKS GOD are gone….. NO MORE JW
that we know, and we love it.

  25. Dapostman Says:

The Bucs should have won 10 games in 2019 with Winston. Could have been 11 if Arians had any balls.

    Giants> kicker
    Falcons> kicker
    Titans> ref
Seahawks> Could have went for two after last TD.

So is 10 or 11 games really a stretch in 2020? Of course not and now with 7 out of 16 teams making the playoffs they are more realistic since 2002.

Making the playoffs as the 6th or 7th seed and getting bounced out ala the Bengals or the 2019 Patriots will be a major disappointment.

It’s NFC Championship game participant or bust! Anything less would be so unGOAT like.

  26. Adrnagy Says:

So why are we talking about drafting a QB ? And is that “draftee qb” the answer moving forward ? Are we sure is not going to be bust ?

Same goes with “drafting a WR “ in the 1 or 2 round … why? We have Scotty Miller , Watson, oj and brate

  27. Hethrew 30 Says:

This is stupid, but nothing can top the empty-headed, dead-on-arrival “America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston.” Joe’s an instant laughing stock for that one…not to be taken seriously. Yet here you are every day reading Joe’s opinion. Interesting. Joe’s America’s Quarterback nickname began 4+ months before Jameis was drafted. It’s a nickname. Ever hear Joe say Jameis got screwed by not getting picked for a Pro Bowl? No. You didn’t. The archives are all here for all to view. –Joe

  28. Clutch buc Says:

Adrnagy….. shuutttttt up. You are easily the worst poster I’ve had to waste time reading. Especially on a site with a lot of great insight from fans, you just send negativity because you’re butt hurt you lost your worthless qb nobody else wants . Go bandwagon another team and let the true fans enjoy what’s clearly the best thing to happen since the Super Bowl win. Just shut up and go away.

The arrival of America’s Patriot Qb to Tampa.

  30. Mike Johnson Says:

One things for sure..If Arians and Licht fails in anyway and does not get a t least to the playoffs with Brady? They are failures. Pleease no excuses. They rolled the dice on a great has been who cannot run 5 yrds but may still have something in the tank. They’re gonna have to go all out to ensure this statue of liberty he is protected. I wish us luck on the gamble. If this does not work out I say we dump Licht and Arians in the bay..head first while Brady is enjoying all that guaranteed money in Rehab.

  31. stpetebucsfan Says:

“The Bucs are loaded with pass catchers.”

EXACTLY!!! And yet I read guys pining for a trade for Edelman…and a wild thread here where we might burn our #14 on wait for it…..a freaking pass catcher.

Again…ONE football to feed all of these guys. Brady will be great at spreading it and the only requirement for his target is to run the right route and get open.

WE DO NOT NEED ANOTHER TARGET!!!

Assuming the next RB we get will be able to catch out of the backfield like Dillon or Cam or CEH how will all these guys get their touches?

Luckily we have absolutely the greatest two WR’s in the game today when it comes to sublimating their egos to the needs of the team.

I cannot remember when our “locker room” has been in better shape. Let’s protect that team oriented togetherness…no more DJAX’s or Swaggys!!!

  32. Adrnagy Says:

    same to you.

The great Derrick Brooks refused to call Cadillac Williams by any nickname until it was earned. Sure, sometimes guys a nickname as part of friendly banter. But Winston never earned any of the moniker Joe (alone) gave him. Not even close. Bad for cred.

It’s going to be ok buddy.

  39. Joe in Michigan Says:

Is it bad for cred for someone to worry about a player’s nickname? Cadillac Williams ran more like a Chevette in his last years, and we still kept calling him that.

  40. Formerly Tampa 2 Says:

I watched an interesting blog on YouTube that made sense today. It broke down every coach and player currently on the roster and projected why the bucs would win many games this coming season. The real interesting part was the comparison of Winston & Brady. And the most telling about Winston was that he could not judge/read defenses pre-snap and always tried to force the ball to the designated receiver instead of checking down to an open one or throwing the ball away. And Brady is a master at reading defenses pre-snap and knowing when to throw the ball away. Won’t go into what was really said about winston. But it was a very informative blog. Looking forward to this coming season for sure.

  41. Oneilbucs Says:

They shouldn’t have to change anything because it was Jamies fault why we lost . We have a 7 ranked offensive line and a number 5 defense . So we shouldn’t have to change the playbook or even get a runningback because we couldn’t run the ball because of Jamies and Jamies was the second most sacked quarterback in the NFL and he was number one in quarterback hits but it was Jamies fault . So now that we have Brady superbowl or bust playoffs is not good enough superbowl or bust we have a good offensive line and a good defense according to the national media and the fanbase on this site .. No excuses ….

  44. Youngbucs Says:

Hey Tampa 2 all you have to do h I s watch the all 22 film.
Winston has been doing this his entire career.
It’s has nothing to do with BA offense.
Honestly a lot of people will get mad when I say this but freeman was actually better than Jameis in these aspects with less.

  45. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Nothing like a little Jameis “chum” to bring out the posters…….bravo….

  46. theodore Says:

“…Brady is one of the best in NFL history to recognize blitzes and change protections”

Hope Brady brought his defensive sign stealing video crew with him.

  47. Jean Lafitte Says:

    that ship has sailed

  48. SOEbuc Says:

WTF. I’ve been saying this since Brady was signed. Don’t need Shaun King (who was sitting behind me at an IHOP when I was a kid and he was starting. Got a napkin autograph:). Jameis and Brady had avg. 2.5 seconds in the pocket. Brady threw for 4,000+ yards 24TD/8 INTS (12-4) with a poor receiving corp. Jameis threw for 5,000+ yards and had 33 TDs/30 INT (7-9) with the best WR duo in the NFL.

The eyes Chico. They never lie.”-Tony Montana. Take this quote and compare it to Jameis vs. Brady and look at the reaction to every fan and player on this team.

  49. BrianBucs Says:

Before last season began, I predicted the Bucs would go 7-9 because even though the roster was talented I knew that was the very best they could do with Winston at QB.
Next season will be a little harder to predict.
Even though Brady, even at 43 is a HUGE upgrade over Winston, I think the absence of minicamps and OTA’ s will put the Bucs a little behind .
But, Brady having the experience he does plus having an unbelievable football mind should pick up thing very quickly.
Can’t wait to see the Bucs play with a REAL NFL QB as they haven’t had one in quite some time

  50. SOEbuc Says:

    @stpetebucsfan

“Edelman would be the “perfect fit” for us now that Brady is here. We have the “bigger”pass catchers, with him in the slot the team becomes even more dangerous.”

An awesome dream but for some reason it looks like they think Scotty Miller is the next Hump. We’ll see about that. Hump was a Licht UDFA and it’s only Scotty’s second year.

    JAMEIS GRIEF TOUR: DAY 19

Still Attending: Ndog, LaMarcus, Oneilbucs, Ardnagy, Dapostman, Mike Johnson.

NOTE: Cute that I have an imposter posting at 2:05pm about Edelman. I didn’t post.

  52. Ivan The Insider Says:

    @ Marine Buc

I spoke with an agent for one of the top 10 NFL agencies (won’t name names) a few months ago… he said they talked with some people from Jameis’ Team before last season as they were considering an agent switch…

Anyway… his person told the agent I spoke with, and I quote… “We believe Jameis is a $35,000,000 per year man.”

I would assume they were not asking for $35M after his infamous 30/30 season last year, but your $30M/year probably isn’t far off.

The Bucs dodged a bullet not resigning Jameis. The entire league can see his true “market value” now… it’s very low as no one has jumped to sign him. You’re exactly right… his agents will have no choice but to lower that salary demand if he’s going to sign somewhere; and probably only as a backup.

This is a very HUMBLING time for Jameis Winston, no doubt. It will be interesting to see where he goes and how his career develops from here. My guess is that any teams with a little interest in Winston will wait until after the Draft to see if they can grab one of their top QB prospects somewhere in the draft first. If many teams ‘miss’ that wanted to draft a young prospect, then they might take a chance on Jameis.

Many posters on this very site were saying months ago that the Jameis Market was only Tampa Bay. And that if Tampa Bay didn’t give him a big contract he probably wasn’t going to get one. Some even mentioned it was a real possibility that Winston could be out of the NFL. Many Jameis fans laughed at that possibility but now it’s actually becoming more and more real.

Personally, I’m happy Jameis is no longer a Buccaneer. Too inconsistent and unpredictable. But I wish him well and hope he lands on his feet with another opportunity somewhere. If not, I DO hope if he turns to baseball he has a successful career there as well.

  53. Ivan The Insider Says:

JOE – looks like myself and stpetebucsfan have the imposter posts above between 1:45pm and 2:15pm. Both posts made about Edelman (weird).

  54. BigHog Says:

Brady…Brady…Brady!! All hail “THE GREAT WHITE HOPE”!!!

  55. BigHog Says:

All but me!! The BigHog!!! …and I mean that!!!

  56. Defense Rules Says:

Ivan the Insider … You’re certainly not alone in believing that Jameis’ stock is at rock bottom right now. As a starter, I think he’ll have a tough time finding a team willing to take a chance on him. But as a backup QB, my guess is that there’ll be a number of teams vying for his services. But no, the Bucs won’t be one of them.

Right now most teams are strapped for salary Cap $$$. Only THREE teams have over $25 mil in Cap space right now (Browns, Texans, Jets) and that’s before the rookie class gets signed. Hard for any team to pay Jameis what he & his agent are convinced he’s worth when no one has that kind of gambling money.

  57. Defense Rules Says:

Ivan & StPete … Finding out who the imposter is (or are) should be a piece of cake for Joe’s guys. Mistake to steal someone else’s handle and think that no one will figure out who it is.

  58. Clutch Buc Says:

  59. Barack's Crack Pipe Says:

  60. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

When it comes down to it this article is spot on! We went to 7-9 with mr 33&30 so what makes people think we wouldn’t do much better than that with the GOAT who threw for 24 tds and only 8 picks???? Sure Brady would have been sacked a whole lot more than he did in NE but he also would’ve utilized the intermediate and underneath routes more thus negating the pass rush. Would Brady even be needed if Winston had thrown 33 tds and 11 picks??? He probably would’ve thrown for 6000 yards and gone at least 11-5. Those who can’t see what Brady would have done to this offense are just as irritating as those who throw all of the losing at Winston’s feet.

  61. Soggy Says:

@ BigPig – Shut up racist

  62. DavidBigBucsFan99 Says:

Big Hog as opposed to what Jameis the Great Black Hype??? Brady proved himself to be the GOAT and Winston a goat, loud, arrogant, stubborn and unwilling to learn from his mistakes and that’s got nothing to do with color. It’s called reality. I know in your reality color is the only thing that matters but in this case it isn’t. Now if we got Andy Dalton instead and some of the yahoos were hootin and hollerin then maybe so. Just give it a rest, Brady is still worlds greater than Winston!

  63. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

Now we see why BigHog wanted Jameis to stay. Old NDog too. For the same reason they stated that other fans didn’t want him. Meanwhile the guys in the locker room who resemble Jameis are happy as hell that Brady is their new QB. It’s almost as if they are “judging somebody by the content of their character, and not by the color of their….” you know the rest, right Haynes?

I remember hearing that quote somewhere. Guess it’s not as powerful as we were led to believe.

  64. Knuckle Sandwich Delivery Service Says:

    DR

I wish I could buy you for what you’re worth, and sell you for what you think you’re worth.

  66. Chris l Says:

Agree on the check down but let’s find a guy who can catch smoothly. That is not Ronald jones. Or when Jameis threw screens it looked very bad and awkward.

  67. JimmyJack Says:

What is this behavior? I don’t get the point of playing make pretend that Tom was our QB last year. To each there own I guess.

Nobody knows how much better we will be with Tom. But with h we are now talking playoffs. The expectations are raised. That reason alone makes it a upgrade.

It’s also funny to me the Winston adorers saying now it’s SuperBowl or bust. Like that’s a bad thing. Hahaha……With Winston SuperBowl wasn’t even a possibility and was a laugh to even talk about….
……..The fact that now with Brady we can actually say Super Bowl in a serious tone means it was a obvisous upgrade.

  68. Tye Says:

It’s just refreshing to have an off-season that is filled with hope and possibilities…
1st offseason in decades the Bucs future looks promising..

  69. BigHog Says:

  70. kyle Says:

marinebuc, no disrepect but you were just posting the other day about how Jameis is not on the team and Joe should move on instead of writing about him. Now youre bringing the Jameis conversation up.. lol Pick a side dude, kinda hypocritical.

  71. BigHog Says:

Soggy::a lesson for you…I nor my people can be racist because we never have hated because of the color of your skin…never……don’t think on it, just choke it down and realize it!!!

  72. JimmyJack Says:

Look man the guy is a racist. He’s not here to talk Bucs football he here to spread and create racism. More comments take ng about race is exactually what his goal is.

Best off to just call him a dirt bag or a racist and move on. Or ignore completely and talk football. Don’t give him what he craves.

  80. Alvin Scissors Harper Says:

It’s really embarrassing to me to read about racism with Jay Miss. It has absolutely nothing to do with racism and everything to do with a 5th year QB who still throws 30 pics, is a deer in the headlights, holds onto the football too long and who continuallly makes stupid decisions. Doesn’t matter if he’s black, white, red or yellow. He is what he is and that is Jay Miss.

  81. Joe in Michigan Says:

I get where Marine Buc is coming from, sometimes you get sick of hearing about things that day, the next day you feel like commenting on it.

The thing I’m tired of hearing is “Jason Licht sucks” or “Licht is stupid”. I guess I just don’t see where this adds value to any conversation on here. Does anyone really think that the Glazers are going to look on here and say “You know, (place Licht hater handle here) is right, we need to fire that guy”?

  82. stpetebucsfan Says:

Joe thinks he has it taken care of. Same clown that used the handle “El Buco Realisto” was the culprit.

    @Adrnagy,

I stopped reading when you said Tom Brady had great receivers in NE last year. You have no clue. Edelman was the only reliable WR with the screen to the RB. One dimensional passing offense. The Sanu pick up was worthless. Did you watch the Dolphins game when TB had AB to throw to?

We have 2 Pro Bowl WRs who are not divas. I would say TB is going to bounce back in a big way because he’s out of the private school system in NE. He will have a career year. He is literally the most competitive person in sports. And he is not being asked to wing it down field each and every play. This is going to be a hybrid passing offense, with each week exploiting the defense on the field. Get yo popcorn ready. You’ll be bandwagoning on the Brady train 3 weeks into the season.

Grab a bottle of Preparation H next time you’re out shopping for dooms day relief.

Finally…. an article that identifies the upgrade as it relates to identifying protection. This will help the running back, name doesn’t matter.
