Arians Identifies A Fix For His Secondary

October 22nd, 2019

Speaking passionately yesterday, Bucco Bruce Arians acknowledged his struggling pass defense and called out a simple fix, one that has Joe eagerly awaiting his next trip to Abe’s Place for a half gallon of the coldest draft beer in the Tampa Bay area.

What is a cornerback’s dream? One would think it’s having coach who the majority of the time asks you to play an attacking style of man coverage.

You know, get up on your receiver immediately and cover him like your life is on the line. But Bucs cornerbacks, per Arians, haven’t responded well to that edict.

“Just be more physical,” Arians told WFLA-TV, “You know, we play a lot of man-to-man. So we’re 1-on-1. So if our pass rush is not getting there, you gotta cover your guy. You know, again, we played a couple of poor decisions on crossing routes [in London] where we went underneath and got thrown over the top because we were going for interceptions. But overall, just be more physical at the point of attack.”

In the quote above, when Arians said “you gotta cover your guy,” he chuckled. Joe’s glad Arians is able to maintain a smile in the face of the Bucs’ poor secondary play. Joe does not want to see Arians’ health deteriorate quickly because of the unwatchable Bucs pass defense.

Sunday is a perfect day to get the cornerbacks on track against Ryan Tannehill and a Titans receiving corps that won’t be winning any postseason honors.

“You gotta cover your guy.” Well said, Coach.

    Hey joe,

The only thing I did not see that Bucco Bruce said in his speech was not having his secondary lined up 10 yards off their man. Even a blind mentally handicapped Jameis Winston could convert all day on a defense that practically gives you the first down completion. Every time I see our secondary lined up that way I get heartburn and pray for the day a heart attack will take me so I do not have to witness another race for the draft, but I’m healthy as an ox fml. I just saw that philly just real ease Orlando Scandrick what do you think about the Bucs cutting some of our under performers and going after him?

  2. AKickInTheBucNuts Says:

Cover your guy. Yeah, that’ll fix it!

  3. Son of Kobe Faker Says:

“My Dad read this 5 times

What’s the Fix? Is he joking?

Tampa bay is naive and have low football IQ but

U cant fool a northerner like my Dad and I

    The Great Golfcart Heist

2024 is when the naive bucs apologist gets their new GM

    LOL”

  4. Defense Rules Says:

Ya, THAT’S the ticket BA. just tell your CBs to ‘cover your guy’. How hard can it be? YGBSM. You start off the season with VHIII (inept), MJ Stewart (inept), Davis (2nd year guy), Whitehead (2nd year guy) and Edwards (rookie) and then give them advice like THAT? ‘Hey guys, just cover your guy’. What could possibly go wrong?

I foolishly thought, from the ‘Arians Identifies a Fix for his Secondary’, that there was a REAL FIX on the way. Like MAYBE we’d traded for a veteran CB to replace VHIII? Nah, we’re good. Our only HOPE now is that TB replaces VHIII with either Ryan Smith, Dean or SMB. And oh ya, that Edwards is back in the starting lineup. Let these guys take their lumps and GROW. We’ll end up better off for it in the end.

  5. Pewter power Says:

Not sure why joe keeps disrespecting titans they are still a better complete team and are better than us until we beat them. There is no gimmie game for this team nor even the Falcons

  6. Colonel Angus Says:

Well there you go, no need to make a trade, our DB’s just have to start covering people. Problem solved.

  7. Bob in Valrico Says:

Its no secret that VH3 lacks the speed to stay up with a lot of the faster receivers in the league. There are a lot of mismatches in the NFL. Smaller defenders usually don’t have the leverage necessary to go up against the taller receivers in press coverage. Advantage WR, Its way easier to push down than it is to push up.

  8. Easy Says:

“So if our pass rush isnt getting there you gotta cover your guy.” LOFL what pass rush?! Outside of Shaq Barretts few games we have ZERO pass rush.

  9. Delawest Says:

    STOP PEEKING IN MAN COVERAGE!!!

  10. 813bucboi Says:

So if our pass rush is not getting there

    THATS THE POINT…

the pass rush isnt getting there….outside of shaq, we have no pass rush….

wanna know why BA chuckled?…..because he knows pass rush and secondary go hand in hand….

    GO BUCS!!!!!!

  11. 813bucboi Says:

    EASY

    BINGO!!!!!

    GO BUCS!!!!!

  12. ElioT Says:

What are the odds Humphries has a career best game on Sunday against the Bucs secondary?

  13. Jean Lafitte Says:

Put two DB’s on the enemies best #1 WR at all times no matter where they move on the field. Put our best CB (C. Davis) with FS help on their #2 WR all the time no matter where they move on the field. Let our LB’s and slot CB take care of the slot all the time. Quit giving their best WR’s one on one matchups. Let’s make them work for it. How many times do we have to watch WR’s like Thomas, and J. Jones beat us single handedly because we give him a single DB. I say smother them, just like they do to us with ME13. It won’t be perfect but at least it makes it tougher on their best marquise WR’s.

So who is the best WR on the Titans?

  14. LJsDaddy Says:

Tannehill will have a career day. Hell, he might even make the pro Bowl…after Sunday, they will at least start the conversation. Back ups mean nothing to us…we make them look great time after time after time after time……..

  15. JDR Says:

VhIii getting physical..lol he got pushed to the ground with a simple back hand brush off. PATHETIC. When we traded up we should have taken cyrus Jones instead of a dang kicker!

  16. Dusthty Rhothdes Says:

They dont play alot of man coverage…they play tons of zone…watch its iike what mike smith was doing by mixing it up with cover 2,3 and some zero….problem is the bucs have maybe 1 really good lock down corner and bowles blitzes seem really vanilla….id send whitehead from all levels and all areas guy has anose for the football

  17. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

If our pass defense is in last place, then why doesn’t BA switch out the veterans for Murphy-Bunting and Dean? We can’t get any worse.

  18. AlabamaBucsFan Says:

I remember a few years ago we had Doug Martin at running back. He sucked the last two year here and Koetter refused to replace him. Hope the case is not the same with BA. BA needs to replace VIII with Dean or Murphy-Bunting. Peyton needs to be replaced with RoJo. What happened to playing the guy who’s hot (BA words).

  19. Sport Says:

No money, youth movement = same players. It’s all up to coaching and learning this year.

    In BA I Trust!

  20. Mike Johnson Says:

LMAO Again here. Joe says, Sunday is the perfect opportunity for us to get back on track against Tannehill. You kidding me Joe? Hint…A change at QB for the Titans. Now look at our record against change of oppositional QB’s. We..make those QB’s giant killers come Mon Morning. Not once but..every single GD time. We shall see. But don’t hold your breathes for to long.

  21. jmarkbuc Says:

BA starting to sound all Smitty to me…

“You know, get up on your receiver immediately and cover him like your life is on the line. But Bucs cornerbacks, per Arians, haven’t responded well to that edict”

Sounds eerily like ” We let them decide”

When did defensive schemes come with an opt out?

“I only cover certain people. Based on my pay scale”

All these coaches and can’t even “coach their scheme” Bench somebody. Cut somebody. Accountability, right?

  22. #1bucsfan Says:

There’s a shocker. Asking corners to cover their WRs. Why didn’t we think of that.

  23. jmarkbuc Says:

“So who is the best WR on the Titans?”

Against this secondary. All of them.

  24. JimbobBucsFan Says:

Kobe & family, whoever the f#ck you are, the majority of your comments have little to do with football evaluation.  Football IQ?  You need to look at yourself first. You seldom discuss real football issues.

You are really more of a troll because you work so hard at saying provocative things to stir up emotion.  You criticize other  fans but you add nothing positive or useful to the discussion.

The previous 11 years record of this franchise is set in stone as it were.  The Buccaneers’ future is not!

  25. orlbucfan Says:

JFCOADC!!!!!!!!! You have a secondary filled with rookies and second year players. You have a BRAND NEW HC team. They’re supposed to be all-pro by now? Really? Is the earth flat? With some of the loudmouth yahoos on here, I guess it is—flat.

  26. Jackpc1 Says:

Where have I heard that before?
