Sherdian Has Words For Schiano Haters

October 31st, 2013

Never has Joe seen so much drama circling around the Bucs like it has this season, like a buzzard hovering over the carcass of a deer.

It’s one thing after another from the start of training camp, although the drama and leaks have subsided substantially since leaky Josh Freeman was tossed off the team and run from One Buc Palace. Feel free to do the math.

But fans’ ire, loathing and (not Mike Glennon) mob mentality, bordering on a lynch mob mentality all in the name of firing Bucs commander Greg Schiano, has eye-RAH! Kaufman of The Tampa Tribune worried.

Kaufman has said on several radio shows, both local and national, he has never seen such “vitriol” from Bucs fans. So he posed a question this afternoon to Bucs defensive coordinator Bill Sheridan, who recently invited fans to join in game-planning against opponents for free Cokes but shunned them at the gates of One Buc Palace, if he has felt the wrath Bucs fans have for Schiano.

“I appreciate you asking me that because it gives me a chance to speak on that,” Sheridan told Kaufman. “It definitely is not warranted. It may be very hard for people on the outside who don’t know Greg, because for some of the criticism he has received — I don’t have first-hand knowledge; I don’t follow but indirectly, we all get it, right? — It definitely is not warranted.

“I have worked for a lot of quality people in this profession long before I ever came to the NFL. And I certainly worked for quality people in the National Football League. I would put Greg up against anybody I have worked for in regard to a guy of single-mindedness of purpose towards doing the job he has been asked to do and doing it with complete and total integrity. And in our profession, if we get criticized for that, well he should be criticized.

But all he has ever done since I have been here and worked for him is be the first guy in the building and the last guy to leave. Focus his entire energy and concentration on what he can do on a daily basis to help the Bucs win. And he has done this with complete and unadulterated integrity. So, in our profession, if we get criticized for that, then that’s the way it is.

“Nobody cares how hard you are trying right? We are in a production business and a performance-based business. It is frustrating, but everybody else works hard too.”

Joe has noticed in the past few days, for reasons unknown, the lit torches crowd has somewhat calmed down about driving Schiano to the nearest bus stop. Perhaps it is because Bucs fans have finally worn themselves out from the hollering and typing and kvetching?

But Joe has noticed a great uptick in fans wanting to nail Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik to a tree, which saddens Joe and disturbs him.

  1. Justin Says:

Joe- around 6pm on Sunday (as we are getting our heads kicked in) the “Fire Schiano” crowd will be out in full force.

We havent played in over week. They are dormant.

    For now.

  2. Bucnjim Says:

I think everyone is just numb from the losses and being out of contention after only week three. Kind of ruins your entire football season in a very short time. Was not worth the investment in season tickets that’s for sure. I’m feeling really bad for anyone in marketing and the PR department at one Buc. What will be their pitch for 2014? For the fans it will be a Pitch Fork!

  3. bucfanjeff Says:

Another embarrassing loss this weekend and hopefully Schiano is history. It’s not his effort and integrity I question, it’s his ability to adapt scheme and philosophy to the talent he has – and he has 8 pro bowlers – epic fail.

I would like to see how the players respond to an interim coach that will adjust concepts and scheme some. Wannstedt could land himself a job…and should for at least the rest of this season.

  4. JonBuc Says:

Teflon Dom is no longer exempt from much deserved criticism. This could be the farewell tour for The Dirtstar.

  5. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Maybe you like it or maybe you dont, but fans listen and respect the media in this town. So when Deumig, Palowski, Booger, Tom Jones, etc start dumping on Schiano-and add to that embarassing NFL Network job that Silver, Eisen, Sapp, Sanders did on Coach on Thursday Night, some people are finally getting ticked off. (add in 102.5′s billboards as good measure) I dont agree with the personal aspect to it. I didnt see it during the Rahemm Morris days, but man it is real and it is there. The stadium on Thursday was just boiling mad. Maybe it is against Schiano just because he is convenient. Maybe the anger should be against the Glazers. In any other town the owners would be catching the heat, but most people dont know who Bryan and Joel are, or what they look like, much less hold them accountable.

  6. Northend Says:

What Jeff said. And please ,please, please take Sheridan with you you leave Greg.

  7. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

    Truth hurts, I know

  8. Kalind Says:

Joe, those fans need to shut the heck up then. Dom is hardly the problem. He’s done everything a fan could ask of a GM. He’s brought in a lot of talent. Signed hotshots left and right. He’s one of the best GMs in the league. Lay off. He isn’t coaching. He isn’t playing. He brings guys in and evaluates talent. Of which he’s been pretty good. Not great, hardly perfect, but very solid.

  9. Buc Fan South Tampa Says:

Justin, as I was telling Art today – when you start the season thinking playoffs (as most fans did), and you end up 0 and 7, people will get a little ticked. They are going to take it out on somebody.

  10. Super Friend Says:

    @ Kalind

Put on your fireproof coat, you aren’t allowed to disagree with the 14 people who constantly post to Fire Dominick as well.

But I agree with you (zipping my coat now)

Oh and Sheridan – you aren’t allowed to say good things about a man’s character around here. You should know better

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

if Schiano goes then Dom should go as well. there are many and obvious reasons for that.

  12. Lev Says:

    Joe,
I listened to you on the radio. What good will happen if you add an offensive tackle to an 0-16 team? We should take a QB with our first pick and then a guard/center with out 2nd round pick.

  13. adamant Says:

Barring a significant winning streak or turnaround, both Schiano and Dominick will be gone. Just the nature of the business. The record speaks for itself and Dominick, like it or not, is tied to that record. He has done some nice things with free agency and the draft here and there, but clearly not enough.

  14. []_[]Buc Says:

    If we continue to lose

The entire place gets a clean sweep

Afterall it’s all about the wins right?

You can’t crucify a man for one thing and overlook the other for the exact same thing.

I like Dom and I think these last couple seasons have had some amazing drafts. But as of now he’s just a loser. With way more osses under his belt than wins. That is the “sad” truth.

  15. BucsFan68 Says:

The drama will truly be over when changes at One Buc are made. The “Mike Glennon gives us the best chace to win” thing has not produced any victories.

  16. BucsQcCity Says:

I wish they stop looking at the clock to see who’s staying longer in the office. This is not a valid metric. Wins are. Not hours in the building. NFL doesn’t keep stats about how long coaches have planned in the practice week.

    Just win.

Oh and no one will pity you and Schiano. Since you got here, you already made more than I’ll do in a lifetime and without having anything to do except being in the building..

  17. Bobby Says:

What good is it to draft a QB if he ends up like Stafford his first couple of years? At some point we have to address the O-line. Now, if Bridgewater is available and we pass for an O-lineman I’ll probably be the first one screaming at the TV but only if it’s Bridgewater.

  18. Bobby Says:

@BucsFan68 …surely you’re not saying that Freeman gave us the best chance of winning????!

  19. BirdDoggers Says:

No one knows the true inter-workings within the organization. I have no doubt Schiano is doing everything he can to be successful. The media makes Schiano out to be a tyrant. We have no idea what his staff and players truly think about him. All we know is this team is not winning games and looks to be consistently outcoached by the opposition. The criticism snowballed as the losses mounted.

The fact that Dominik is taking heat from the fans is the result of the wreckage this season has become. Regardless of the job Dominik has done, good bad or indifferent, he is guilty by association. I don’t believe Dominik is a bad GM, but the results are enough to start pointing the blame at everything and everyone.

  20. Lev Says:

They are saying that Mariota is better than Bridgewater

  21. Lev Says:

OK say we draft a tackle with our first pick, will Glennon magically become a franchise quarterback?

  22. Eric Says:

The guy is a disaster as a GM.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

There are two reasons why the Schiano haters have eased off.

One is the finality of the Josh Freeman situation coupled with his miserable debut on MNF….many Schiano Haters blame him for outing & ousting Freeman….and now it looks like the benching & cutting of Freeman was warrented.
The other reason is that Scniano’s firing is pretty much a foregone conclusion….no need to lobby anymore the losses will take care of that.
As for Dominick…it will all depend on the Glazer’s relationship with him….he is not the lightning rod that Schiano is…It is possible that the Glazers don’t want to work with someone new.
Actually…Dominick could be replaced now if you wanted to get a head start on everything..there are many candidates not coaching that may be approachable unlike other coaches or players (tampering)

  24. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Actually, I’d like to see Dominick stay…simply because I am continually amused by Buc Realist’s “Pop Star” posts.

And, by the way Buc Realist, I’m not one of the vast many that call you an idiot!!!

  25. JonBuc Says:

Knowing that Schiano pretty much has one foot on a banana peel and the other in the unemployment line…I’ve turned my attention to Dom. Seems like a smart guy…well spoken and has done some decent things. But let’s not over-congratulate him for bidding against himself and paying sticker price + to sign free agents. V-Jax has been very good- makes a pile of cash. Wright was awful and Nicks simply hasn’t worked out. Goldson unfortunately is becoming obsolete in the new era of Powderpuff Football..so we shall see there. The Revis trade is dubious at best…partly because how he is used and he basically makes franchise qb money. Too many whiffs in the draft for every L. David and Martin trade-up hits.

  26. Fire Dominck Says:

Joe you can’t be serious can you? Other than Lavonte and Martin name me a great player we drafted since Dom has been GM. And please don’t say Mr. 2 sacks and 14 tackles McCoy. He has failed at every draft till Shiano got here. Don’t believe me count how many stars we have on the team…. go ahead I’ll wait.
Bowers and Clayborn both suck yet we get rid of Bennett. No TE that actually scares anyone, no third WR and an extremely overpaid O line. Try and put that on Shiano. Truth is you look foolish giving him the nickname rockstar and you don’t want to admit it.

  27. passthebuc Says:

All I can say about the Buc’s situation is

    GO LIGHTENING

  28. WalkdaPlank Says:

What exactly has Dom done for us that has been so great? What has made him a “rockstar”? I will give him props for the 2012 draft, snagging Mark Barron, Doug Martin, and Lavonte David all in one draft. But the others have been horrible. There is a long list of failed draft picks under Dominik’s tenure as GM. Notable players that have done well are Martin, David, GMC, Foster, and Mike Williams. That’s it. Then there’s players like Josh Freeman or DaQuan Bowers or Kyle Moore. Under Dominik we have had 4 losing seasons and NO PLAYOFF APPEARANCES. There was the Eric Wright failure, and so far the Revis trade has gone in the Jets favor because our idiot coaches think Revis is a zone coverage superstar, and its Dominik who brought these guys in. How many GM’s get to work with their 3rd consecutive head coach with the same team without getting the boot? I’m open-minded to listen for a good reason why we should keep Dom around with how horrible this team looks right now, and how it has looked in the last 5 years.

  29. Bucs Fan Since '76 Says:

@JonBuc – You nailed it. Having said that, my problem with the Rock Star relates more to his inability to actually run the organization in the absence of the owners. Maybe a McKay or Polian type would keep him as a GM. Who knows. What I believe is that the team needs to follow the Falcons model – CEO President with a personnel background, and a GM focused on acquiring talent.

  30. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Schiano hate is real…Dominick is hard to actually hate…you can question his competence but hating isn’t easy…Sullivan is the same way….he’s hard to hate.

  31. Bobby Says:

    @Fire Dominck…

You know, it’s hard to find teams that have drafted more than 2 ‘great players’. Now I question your ability to evaluate talent since you think McCoy is just ‘good’. He’s being misused and that makes him appear avg in the stat sheet but he is a beast.

I look at Atlanta and I see Matt Ice, Roddy White and Julio Jones. I look at New Orleans and I think Jimmy Graham because Brees wasn’t drafted by them and neither was Sproles. I look at Carolina and I see Cam and Steve Smith, Williams and Stewart and Kuechly but not all of those players have been selected by the same GM. I would say that Dom has done pretty well. We have Martin, David, McCoy, Mike Williams, Barron, and Foster and they are all playing pretty well. They should only get better with time but of course you want to judge talent on an immediate basis and that is far from an accurate science in the NFL.

Just go through the NFL team by team and see how many teams have more than a few players that are ‘great’ that were drafted by the same GM and were not brought in as a FA. Very few teams have more than 2 or 3. Even if you are loaded like KC it’s no guarantee for success as we saw last year. You have to have a QB and you have to have good scheme.

  32. Your Mom Says:

I don’t give a sh!t if these fools can cure cancer. Win some Gdamn football games. You’ve turned our team into a joke. Let’s see, a slightly above average college coach who never won a conference title makes a below average NFL coach… Who woulda thought. Keep clown shoes and his merry band of yes men around just long enough to win us the first pick in the draft. Then bounce his ass! I will always be thankful that he got rid of Josh, but other than that I’m tired of his sh!t game plans, his misuse of our star players, and his ridiculous comments. Go win “our share” of football games somewhere else and take your dogsh!t defensive coordinator with you.

  33. Splengo Says:

Sticks and stones may break my bones but only wins and losses count here! Good luck in Seattle – the house of the damned!

  34. Jonny 2.3 Says:

Who cares how many hours Schiano and Sheridan are putting in? If they aren’t intelligent enough to get the best out of their players through their schemes, which very much seems to be the case, they must be shown the way out.

  35. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I wonder if there are any Schiano masks out and about tonight?

  36. Capt. Tim Says:

One arrogant, incompetent ass- defending another arrogant, incompetent ass.
Sorry guys. Your record gets you fired. And the total disregard for who your players are- and their strenghts, means you deserve to get fired.
Quit crying, quit complaining. You treated our players like children, treated the fans like fools!

Now, you don’t like getting fed what you’ve been feeding us!
Shut up! You are only still here- because we think you are incapable of winning a Game! You can get the top 3 pick, for when some real coaches get here.

And on your way back to NY/NJ- take Dom with you!

  37. Capt. Tim Says:

Bobby- you need another case of Chapstick? Those lips gotta be chaffed!

  38. Buc1987 Says:

” Now I question your ability to evaluate talent since you think McCoy is just ‘good’. He’s being misused and that makes him appear avg in the stat sheet but he is a beast. ”

Bobby…I hate to throw a dispute at ya, because I think your a great poster. But how is McCoy being used different this season than last season? Are they doing something different with him this season?

See not really a dispute, because I like McCoy a lot. Just a question that I hope you or someone else can explain to me. Is it the loss of Bennett that has effected his play?

  39. K_bassuka Says:

That’s the problem Sheridan, you guys are trying your best, in other words, your best amounts to the NFL worst therefore the HC and everyone else that can’t help the team improve needs to go and us the fans will continue to let you know that….

  40. Eric Says:

Now if a General Manager goes 0-16 in the fifth year of a rebuild is it proven to everyone’s satisfaction the he totally sucks?

Or will we need more data and analysis?

  41. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    I wanted to wear a Josh Freeman mask…..there were two choices….Good Josh & Bad Josh….so I settled for 99…..

  42. holymoly Says:

When does Spring Training start ?

  43. JonBuc Says:

    Bucs since ’76:

I totally agree…and was thinking Dom could be kept on a la McKay was in Atlanta…a demotion under the guise of change in title. I think he provides some value. I also agree that there needs to be a reorganiztion if not development of a power structure. This last decade hasn’t been working to say the least….

  44. JonBuc Says:

I can’t help but think ever since the Breaking Amish Boys bought Man U.-the Bucs have become a hobby at best to them and at worst an outdated video game system. And we are now seeing the piper being paid in full…

  45. []_[]Buc Says:

    TBBF

You didn’t see the one that’s half and half that’s the one I bought. ;)

    Jajaja

  46. MTM Says:

    @ Your Mom – LMAO

Thanks Sheridan for loading bullets to be be used against you and clown shoes. “The first one in the building and the last one to leave” is such BS. Thanks for the 1st round pick. Now take your sh*t show back to D2.

  47. WalkdaPlank Says:

As for Sheridan I’ve had enough of his yapping! Between this and him being a smart ass and sarcastically inviting fans into OBP to work on the gameplan and have some free cokes, then some actually show up and he turns them away. His defense has looked like crap this season, and him talking down to the fans only makes it look 10 times worse. The coaching staff has made the (former) best CB in the NFL look like a lawn chair. “Stud” second-rounder Jonthan Banks was infected with stupid MRSA, not sure if that has effected his play or not but he looks like a launch pad for receivers to burn up and down the field. Goldson was a good pickup but as it turned out Roger Goodell hates players like Goldson. The Bucs have also been using Barron incorrectly in their failed attempt at a good zone coverage scheme, the guy is a run stuffer, not Darren Sharper, every time Banks or Johnson get burned or the QB diagnoses the zone and throws it through the coverage Barron is the only one out there to defend the pass, it’s not his strong suit. Foster, David, and GMC are the only good players on the front 7 and they aren’t getting any help, especially GMC. For a defensive minded head coach, Schiano’s defense looks like crap. So shut your trap Sheridan, actions speak louder than words on the gridiron.

  48. 911bucs Says:

“He has failed at every draft till Shiano got here. Don’t believe me count how many stars we have on the team…. go ahead I’ll wait.”

I think the reason our draft picks don’t pan out is due to proper coaching.

  49. Doc Says:

All those hours in the building and still 0-7, I guess he just admitted they do not have any idea what they are doing.

  50. Buc1987 Says:

@Doc…correct. They are the most inept group of coaches since the Richard Williamson days.

For those of you who have recently became Buc fans over the last 15 years, this is it. This is what it’s like being a Bucs fan. Get used to it.

Think the new QB that they take in the draft will work out? Don’t count on it. Don’t count on anything from here on out. Waaaaay before Jaworski called Freeman an enigma, that’s what I used to call him. It’s almost like Jaws had a bug in my house on gamedays I must have said that word over 50 times when it came to Josh.

Well guess what? This whole freaking team is an enigma now. Usually I can point to one or two things that’s holding the team back. After I went to the Eaglets game. I walked out of RJS with the biggest question mark in my head. I just said out loud in the parking lot “I don’t know”. My wife looked at me and said “you don’t know what?” I said “I have no answers anymore as to WTH is going on with this team.” Enigma.

  51. Buc1987 Says:

and another thing before I found JBF. I used to blog on NFL.com. When they hired Schiano and started assembling coaches. There was a Buc fan in there ranting and raving for about a 1/2 hr how terrible Sheridan is as a DC and how he was going to suck. Wow did he have a crystal ball or what?

  52. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    bucfanjeff Says
“Another embarrassing loss this weekend and hopefully Schiano is history.”

See now…when does it sink in? He didn’t get fired during the bye week.

He didn’t get fired during this ten day period (basically our second bye week).

Clearly the Glazers are determined to stay with him through the end of the season.

All you are doing is setting yourself up to be more frustrated by hoping he gets fired every week.

  53. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

So they players have stuck up for him. The coaches are sticking up for him. Even Dominick is sticking up for him.

And yet…some of you would rather take the word of someone NOT inside the situation over people who are? OOOOKAAAY.

    My prediction: Schiano in 2014.

  54. Otto Says:

We won’t be contenders until we have a great pass rush and QB. Dominik hasn’t excelled at bringing us those key components.

  55. givemeball Says:

The Bucs will be contenders with both Schiano and Dom!
