Mike Williams Has Curious Answer

October 20th, 2013

One of the coolest cats in the Bucs locker room, Mike Williams, is always open and frank with reporters. He’s often one of the first to come to the defense of teammates.

Joe remembers last year how Williams came to the passionate defense of Bucs then-franchise quarterback Josh Freeman and his less than stellar completion percentage. Williams said wide receivers deserved plenty of blame because they had to make sure they were on the same page as Freeman on each and every pass play.

Williams even took heat off of Bucs quarterback Mike Glennon when the Bucs rookie was named starter, saying, “It’s not like [Glennon] has never practiced with the first team.”

After today”s game, recounted by Pat Yasinskas of ESPN, Williams seemed evasive when asked about Bucs commander Greg Schiano not going for a touchdown on four-and-23 with five minutes left and the Bucs trailing by two touchdowns.

Don’t ask me: None of Schiano’s players questioned the call to kick the field goal, but wide receiver Mike Williams had the best quote: “I just block, catch balls and try to get touchdowns. That’s my job. I can’t make the calls. That was his call and that was the right call for him at that time.’’

It sure seems like Williams wanted to go for the touchdown, but for the same of harmony in the locker room and perhaps to protect Schiano, he’s biting his tongue.

Sooner or later there will be more chirping from within the locker room is the losses mount. From what Joe understands, there already are frayed nerves. Not yet publicly, at least, not at the coaching staff.

    Bowers had an interesting tweet as well.

    The way we were going…we would just end up out of field goal range….didn’t we have a TD just called back because of a penalty….I can’t fault the call….our chance was near zero either way.
    As for Williams wanting to go for it….I didn’t hear him say that…but I think QBs and recievers always want to go for it.

    Amen

  4. Meh Says:

    What was Bowers’ tweet?

  5. Stranger Says:

    The use of “his” and “him” is very telling.

  6. Mr. Patrick Says:

    Toes on the line, Mike

  7. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    @Meh,

    “Something’s you just can’t control… Coaches coach players play point blank”

  8. Mr. Patrick Says:

    I guess you have to do those things when you have 1st and goal from the 30

  9. Meh Says:

    Ouch.

    The wheels have definitely come off.

  10. Hawaiian Buc Says:

    The worst thing ever is the story about how he kicked Dexter Jackson (the good Dexter Jackson) out of practice. Read up on that one. It will be big news in the next few days.

  11. Cmurda Says:

    It’s obvious that Schiano’s game doesn’t translate in the NFL. There is no disputing that. Keeping this staff around so we lose which is Joe’s reasoning is self-deprecating. Fire Schiano and name an interim. Ill sacrifice draft day for some hope for the near future. Its just too difficult to watch and as much as I know the season is over, I want to see a win.

  12. Architek Says:

    People don’t care anymore!

  13. Andrew 1 Says:

    I agree with what Cmurda said, Schiano’s game just doesn’t translate well in the NFL. I dont want to hear one more word from that guy Sheridan who made a depleted falcons offense look so dominant. he really does need some fans to go to one buc and help him out. I cant even tell what kind of defense we are playing anymore. I can understand our offense struggling, especially with a new QB, but there is no excuse for our defense to struggle like we did.

  14. Jim Says:

    @Architek

    I certainly don’t. I watch the games, but there is no way I am spending a dime on that product. In a way it is relieving to know that were going to lose. It takes the emotion out and I can just count the days until I can start caring again.

  15. Jeff Says:

    Chris Jones had two sacks today for the Patriots, the funny thing is the Bucs had him on there roster earlier in the year but cut him. He was drafted by the Texans and is a rookie. I was shocked how fastly we cut him. I thought the kid looked pretty good.

  16. Tampabaybuctfan Says:

    @Jeff

    Jones also had a unsportsmanlike penalty call on him that cost NE the game……

  17. Bobby Says:

    Of courseyou go for the field goal when you need two scores and you have zero chance of getting a TD. We got the points. The odds of getting a TD on 4th and 23 is about the same as recovering an onside kick. Take the points. You need them. We were beat long before then. Picking out that call is just plain ignorant.

  18. BamBamBuc Says:

    Sheesh, we just needed that FG, plus 4 recovered onsides kicks followed by 4 40 yard passes to VJ followed by 4 more FGs in a couple minutes time… why is anyone second guessing this strategy?????

    (sarcasm)

  19. Eric Says:

    He kicked Dexter Jackson out of practice?

  20. Robert Freithoffer Says:

    Mike, you play. Schano coaches. Shut up home. Why don’t you get open? If you’re hurt, sit. If not, get open. Shut up!
