When Did Greg Schiano Know?October 10th, 2013
It is really weird. Greg Schiano spoke confidently this afternoon that there was a chance Bucs guard Carl Nicks could play Sunday against the Eagles. Then two hours later, it is learned that Nicks has the MRSA again.
Nicks missed the first two weeks of the season with a MRSA infection to his foot that he first contracted in training camp.
But when did Schiano learn of this latest infection? The following is the transcript of his first few questions and answers at his daily press conference.
Q. Was Carl Nicks limited [today in practice]?
A. He was.
Q. Is that a re-occurrence of a previous issue?
A. It is his foot. I will leave it at that. Keep it vague on purpose for our opponents (smiles).
Q. Is it an infection?
A. I will just say it is his foot. We are examining everything.
Schiano later said Nicks was day-to-day and did not rule him out for Sunday’s game against the Eagles.
This tells Joe one of three things: Either Schiano was being less than truthful (which Joe doubts because Schiano is not a con artist), or Schiano was being hung out to dry, or that the Bucs learned of Nicks’ infection in the roughly two-hour period that elapsed after Schiano left the podium and when news of the re-occurance of Nicks’ MRSA broke.
This is clearly the weirdest Bucs season Joe can remember.. This team just cannot stay away from the drama and sideshows.
UPDATE: A trusted Bucs source told Joe that the Bucs learned of Nicks’ test results for MRSA as the Bucs were on the practice field this afternoon. Schiano holds a press conference immediatley after practices so Schiano would not have known about Nicks’ test results until after his press conference.
