McCoy Doesn’t Get Fan MindsetOctober 10th, 2013
Gerald McCoy went on a passionate rant last night on the Buccaneers Radio Network explaining a message about his head coach he thinks isn’t getting to the masses.
“He is not a dictator,” McCoy said on WDAE-AM 620.
No. 93 talked about how Greg Schiano meets with captains and listens to them, among other non-dictator-like acts.
Joe loves McCoy, but Joe must say that it is completely irrelevant whether or not Schiano is a dictator, acts like a dictator or smells like a dictator. In fact, fans would absolutely love Schiano’s tough-guy persona if he were winning. It wouldn’t matter if he was a toes-on-the-line, rules-obsessed, temperature-managing coach. That would become endearing. Fans only care about wins.
McCoy clearly felt compelled to defend his head coach, but this is the wrong way to do it. Fans expect head coaches to be angry dictators. Hell, Tony Dungy was bashed in this town because he wasn’t in-your-face with players on the sidelines and visibly fired up.
There’s only one title fans want on their head coach: winner. It’s the same label fans wanted on Josh Freeman but didn’t get over the past three seasons. That’s why he’s gone.
