Ahmad Black, Kevin Ogletree Gone

October 1st, 2013

OThe Bucs are trying to find ways to get their first win of the season and have made an eye-opening pair of moves this morning.

Per Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune, Kevin Ogletree and Ahmad Black are no longer Buccaneer Men.

@RCummingsTBO: The Bucs are letting go of WR Kevin Ogletree and S Ahmad Black and will bring WR Chris Owusu back to the 53-man roster

The cutting of Black is a bit of a surprise since he played so much, and especially since starting safety Mark Barron suffered a hamstring injury Sunday and those things don’t heal so quickly. Perhaps Black’s history of running afoul of the law had something to do with this move?

Joe had had it with Ogletree and his drops. Joe scolded Bucs commander Greg Schiano Monday for having the gall to keep Ogletree, who made Michael Clayton look like Cris Carter, yet benched Josh Freeman for “performance.”

Joe didn’t have an issue with benching Freeman but as Joe had pointed out, if Freeman got benched for performance, how could Schiano justify keeping Ogletree on the roster?

Joe’s question was answered this morning.

I assume this is to make room for someone new?

  2. bucfanjeff Says:

Surprised about Black, especially with Barron nursing a hammy issue. Olgetree – good.

  3. bucfanjeff Says:

Chris Owusu was promoted from practice squad.

  4. Cannon Says:

Heh, man, I must have commented right when this article was released… it originally just listed the two players being cut (and not the activation of Owusu)

  5. Paul Says:

Replace stone hands with butter fingers?

  6. You Go Joe Says:

Cutting black is the only real shocker, why cut him when we are thin on safeties???

  7. jb Says:

Granted, they deserved to go, but it’s so typical of a head coach on the hot seat to start releasing players to try and cover up obvious coaching inadequacies. Wasn’t it Schiano that let Underwood go over Ogletree?

This guy has got to go, basically the entire organization needs to be ripped apart and rebuilt!

  8. Paul Says:

Where’s Underwood? He’s better than Osowu

  9. D-Rome Says:

I’m not sure about Black but cutting Ogletree was the right move. He should not have made the roster over Underwood IMO.

  10. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Good, I don’t think I could sit through another Ogletree drop.

  11. Joe Says:

Guys, the only reason Joe can think of that Ogletree made the team over Underwood is special teams. Underwood — though he tried — couldn’t play special teams. He was one-dimensional.

Not making excuses for Dominik here (he should have found someone other than Ogltree and Underwood) but it is very hard for an NFL coach to justify keeping a non-starter on the roster when he cannot play special teams.

  12. OB Says:

If you watched them play, you would know why they were cut. Ogletree can’t catch and didn’t know where he was on the field for what was needed. Black had a very late hit and most of time he was not anywhere near the receiver he was to cover.

I would not be surprised to see others cut or demoted. Donald Penn has not been very good last few games.

  13. BucDan Says:

    Sign Kerry Rhodes

  14. BucsfaninChina Says:

Dude. Just give me one day where i cant question what this team does. Black was an asset. He got in trouble like a year ago, so its hard to imagine thats what it is.

The quickly diminishing positive side of me has to ask it this may have somehing to do with making room on the roster for trade candidates coming over to the Bucs???

Something tells me its gonna be an interesting day!

  15. Natenazty Says:

I agree, and have been saying it since the last player cuts… Why the hell is Underwood not on this team??? He is not Randy Moss, but he is sure of a hell lot better than any slot guy we have on the roster right now. AND he’s a Rutgers guy… He must have had his pinky toe on the line during training camp.

  16. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Joe

Also…Schiano takes major heat for his Rutgers players…..most of the fans here would critisize him for Underwood. If Owusu doesn’t work out, then maybe Underwood gets another chance.

  17. Natenazty Says:

    * pinky toe off the line… lol

  18. Joe Says:

Also…Schiano takes major heat for his Rutgers players…..most of the fans here would critisize him for Underwood.

True, but Joe doesn’t sense Bucs fans had any issue with Underwood being from Rutgers. He was a reliable receiver and all-around good dude. Oh, and fans liked his hair.

  19. kennyc Says:

LOL listen to your guys “The entire organization has to go”

This team is very very close to becoming good. Fix the O and we are good. You can argue the front four all day long but the reality is the D gets tired. When your O cant move the ball and costantly goes 3 and out, that gets taxing on the D. Look at NO, that D is smoke and mirrors! That D sucks (They have faced three shitty ofenses Bucs, cards, doplhins and even the falcons are struggling to score), but they always play with a lead and get plenty of rest.

Owusu is going to shine!! He was tearing it up in training camp and has chemistry with glennon. I agree the Black realease is a bit surprising seeing that DB’s are thin right now.

Underwood is NOT better than Owusu! I am not on board with all you schiano haters. he is doing what needs to be done, the team is 0-4 its time to start shaking things up. I think

  20. joseph mamma Says:

I just think the guy in the front office who thought that signing Ogletree, was a good idea, should be sent packing too.

  21. Young buc Says:

    Fire greg schiano

  22. Natenazty Says:

Kind of off topic, but I think Schiano may have an issue about spending time worrying about useless details instead of paying attention to the more important ones. I think the “over-thinking” of everything blurs his judgement during games, annoys his players, and has them over-thinking on the field, instead of just playing. I did notice a difference with Glennon at the line of scrimmage this last game though… The play clock wasn’t ticking down to 1 or 2 seconds before every snap like Josh would do. (I know… I’m rambling)

  23. bucrightoff Says:

Underwood has been resigned as well.

  24. Natenazty Says:

If Barron can’t go in a couple weeks, who is going to be the safety? Tandy??? smh

  25. mvermulm Says:

I haven’t liked Black at all since he was drafted, so I’m glad to finally see him gone. He got a ridiculous personal foul for that hit on Graham in the Saints game, when every member of the defense was looking at him like he was a moron and they couldn’t believe what he did, all while he celebrated. He looked lost last week once Barron went out, so I’ll welcome anyone other than him to the secondary. Same goes for Ogletree.

  26. BucsfaninChina Says:

Can anyone please provide some proof this has anything to do with Owusu?

  27. snookau Says:

The cutting of Black is either temporary or he got in trouble again.

With Barrons injury, these are the only explanations.

  28. Biff Barker Says:

There is probably more to the Black story than we will ever know.
As far as Ogletree, being cut, he earned the privilege, the guy just flat out didn’t do his job.
Let’s hope Owusu can put the jitters behind and contribute. Interesting that he got the nod instead of Tiquan Chapter 3.

  29. crazy Says:

Must be a couple more Rutgers guys available.

  30. Ian P. Says:

    bucrightoff is correct.
Twitter is blowing up with “Bucs are expected to sign Tiquan Underwood”

  31. Joc Says:

Been saying it our boys will never be a 500 team as long as Dom is the gm. Can anyone debate me here?

  32. Bucnjim Says:

Sounds to me like there might be a suspension looming for Black. That’s usually the case when a team drops a player mid season. Who knows though!

  33. Kryq Says:

Would of rather kept black over Tandy he has better ball skills but oh well.

  34. Mike Says:

I can! Our last 2yrs of draft picks! We gonna b just fine

  35. bucsfanfromtexas Says:

I thought Ahmad was playing well, but glad to see ogletree gone

  36. DP4LIFE22 Says:

natenazty !! your out of line , u been angry since i took it to you

Underwood dropped key 5yd ins last year over and over, the passes he cuaght usually were off some strange bounce.

Black I was surprised but understand, I was just saying how he is always a step behind on the play and never in right spot to make play. that said who is gonna replace him???

thse complaininga about schaino seeming to be desperate to keep his job, i guess you are the same people that quit when it gets tough.

schiano is defensive guy and thats been corrected , who knew offense would stuggle soooo bad. score 17pts and we win

  37. Mike Says:

    Ty DP4! Well said

  38. Joke Says:

I’m glad that Ogletree is gone, but surprised. The guy goes from your #3 receiver to off the team? Why was he even playing this past game?

Oh well. We’ll see what we roll out next.

On Barron, we do at least have the bye week for him to get right.

  39. Harry Says:

Glad Ogletree is gone. One of the most frustrating things when watching the Bucs play is when the QB makes a great throw into the receivers hands, and they (Ogletree) drops it.

    @Kennyc:
I so agree with you. We are close. What we need most is a QB. Glennon has 12 games left to make his case.

I think Shiano has done a very good job on “D”. Who here would expect the Bucs to have the #12 overall D, #15 passing and #9 rushing.

Problem is we are #31 on Offense. And with the talented players we have there is no way we should be that low – That is coaching. Freeman is not that bad; granted, I do not think he is anywhere near a franchise QB. And with VJ, M-Will, Martin, Nicks, etc., our offense should not be so easy to stop, and it has been for almost 10 straight games.

  40. Mike Says:

That would lay on our OC and HC for not going for more with the lead

  41. Warthog Says:

The D is better this year. Gotta give Schiano credit even though there’s a few weird stunts and coverages in there that don’t make a whole lotta sense. As for Ogletree, great. But why was he on the team in the first place?

  42. Tomcin Says:

Resign Grimm or Sean Baker for ss help.

  43. John23 Says:

We need a TIGHT END please get a trade for one or do something

  44. Adam L. Says:

the guy sitting behind me on Sunday was a die-hard Cowboys fan who had just moved to Florida 3 days ago. When he saw the ball that hit Ogletree square in the chest and bounced sky-high, he said out loud, “And THAT’S why Dallas cut him.”

  45. Capt. Tim Says:

Black musta adjusted the Thermostat! Or penne, instead of linguini.

Wonder which Rutgers safety we’ll sign?

  46. Jeagan1999 Says:

Rotoworld is reporting that the Bucs will re-sign Tiquan Underwood today!

  47. TheRealVince Says:

Glad Ogletree is gone, that dude is terrible, but with us so thin @ safety Im curious about the Black move.

  48. Dennis Says:

    @Joe

I know we signed Underwood and Owuso back but what do you think of this trade… Titans need a QB and we need a #3 receiver.. Kenny Britt (Rutgers Guy) wants out of tennessee, this trade makes a lot of sense to me. Kenny britt and a late round pick for Josh Freeman and we would have to cover the salary…

  49. Adam L. Says:

I don’t get cutting Black. I really think Dominik failed a philosophy course in college and now he has an aversion to anything “deep.”

  50. BirdDoggers Says:

I’d rather see what Owusu brings to the table than see another drop from Ogletree. Cutting Black doesn’t add up, unless something happened behind the scenes.

  51. Legarrettes Blount Says:

Trade Josh Freeman for Kenny Britt now that Locker got injured. And why would we cut Ahmad Black? He has been our dime safety for 2 years now and played pretty well. He was a total ball hawk and UF. They must like Keith Tandy for that role better. But would it kill us to bring in some veterans?? Or is Schiano worried that grown men veterans wont be able to deal with his micro managing coaching style.

  52. hamilton Says:

how can you play a lot like black an get cut after the game, they said mccoy told some player to shut up complaning to media about the off,i think black was one of them. pewterreport

  53. Legarrettes Blount Says:

Ahmad Black is a weed smoker though. I dont have anything agaisnt that as long as their on the field performance is not affected. But my friend down in the Tampa area said he smoked a blunt with Black, and this was after already being arrested for marijuana possession. We dont know what is really going on behind the scenes, so show some trust in our front office ( although they dont deserve much).

  54. Illuminati Says:

Demps, Owusu, Underwood. We’re putting a lot of speed on the field.

  55. Jeff Says:

Most teams mid season roster moves involve cutting and signing guys you’ve never heard of ei practice squadders; while giving major playing time to guys you have heard of.

    Adam Gase for bucs HC.

  56. Illuminati Says:

Everybody’s falling in love with Gase. But I wouldn’t rush to judgment. He’s only 34, this is first season as a coordinator in the NFL, and Peyton Manning will make any offensive coordinator look like a world-beater.

  57. Rahb Says:

I used to think the Glazers were great Owners, however every since they Jettisoned Chucky they seem to be clueless. I keep hearing how Schiano deserves credit for improving the Defense…..yeah your defense had better be improved when you invest 2 First rnd picks a 2nd rnd pick and $100 Million

Strange how our newly minted Offensive Captain and Bank Busting WR has been targeted more than any WR in the NFL yet production from those targets are under 50% and has yielded 4 interceptions. Not to mention his drops.

THE OFFENSE SEEMS TO BE A REFLECTION OF VINCENT JACKSON’S LACK OF PRODUCTIVITY. (Anybody else notice how many times this big strong guy seems to fall down or thrown down on his routes? Kinda slow too? )

  58. JamesrunningWilder Says:

In Defense of Glennon… The Guy looked pretty good for having not Practiced with or Thrown a Single Ball to Jackson or Mike Will in a LIVE Game. I think once he gets his Timing Down with those guys, which will take more Reps to Accomplish, he should be Pretty Good. I like the way he looked… He was decisive with his throws and had nice touch on his passes when he needed to put some touch on the throw. Secondly, The O-Line really didn’t give him much Time in the Second Half of Sunday’s Game. The Cards D-Line Brought It in the Second Half and the Bucs O-Line Left It in the Locker Room at Halftime.
I like the Freeman for Britt Trade Idea… but the only problem with that is that Britt has had a LOT of Off-The-Field Problems. Not sure the Bucs want to take that Drama on.
Black needed to go because our Defense really got Toasted once Barron went down and Black replaced him. Black was a Definite Liability in Coverage.
Ogletree… well, he did Nothing to make a case for remaining with the Team.
    Again, just an opinion. =)
