Bucs Made Play For Carson Palmer

September 25th, 2013

It seems that the Bucs had issues with Josh Freeman prior to drafting the hero of the outfit that bears his name, the Mike Glennon Mob. Speaking to the Tampa Bay pen and mic club this morning, Desert Rats quarterback Carson Palmer said Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik was pushing hard for his services in the offseason.

“My agent had said that Tampa had been contacting him a lot,” Palmer said. “I would have been very excited to be there. The organization has a lot of good players across the board.”

So apparently, Dominik could not promise Palmer a starting gig right out of the chute this season, but the Desert Rats did.

Joe wonders what the Bucs’ record would be with Palmer at the helm starting Week 1? BSPN’s Adam Schefter learned back in April that Palmer had hoped to land in Tampa Bay.

I’ll take my chances with Glennon!

  2. bucrightoff Says:

Palmer would have been a stopgap so I’m not sure how much interest I would have had in him. That said we’d be 2-1 right now if he was the starter.

  3. Jrock Says:

Ehhh… I’d rather have Alex Smith over Palmer… really wouldn’t want Palmer at all. Like lightning said, I’ll take my chances with Glennon, thanks.

  4. Patrick Says:

Dominick officially needs to go. You try trading for Palmer before Alex Smith? He was making a push for a quarterback that is washed up. Luckily, we dodged another bad Dom decision.

  5. nate Says:

Brett farve to tampa bay baby!!!

  6. jb Says:

Freeman, Dominick, Shiano……all gone by January

  7. Killian Says:

Palmer has been a loser everywhere he goes. Wouldn’t want him on the Bucs. This is a win win for us, Glennon gets plenty of time to play, therefore allowing us to get another QB if necessary.

  8. bucrightoff Says:

I’d be down for a Favre run. Certainly would make the season more fun.

  9. mvermulm Says:

Patrick, Dom was trying to bring in legitimate competition for Freeman, not find a new starter. Smith was only going somewhere to start, and it would have cost the 1st-rd pick we gave to the Jets for Revis in order to get Smith. Dom played it right.

  10. Jeagan1999 Says:

Palmer’s not the player he once was, but he’s completing nearly 60% of his passes, with less talent (except for Fitzgerald) than what Freeman has. Problem with Palmer is he is not the LONG TERM answer at QB the Bucs need. We need a Wilson/Kapernick/RGIII/Luck/Newton/Tannehill/Dalton type of young guy who can grow with the team, but has the tools to win some games NOW! Hopefully, Glennon can be that guy…if not, we’ll be drafting a QB in the 1st round next April!

  11. MakaveliTheDon Says:

    “Desert Rats”??

sorry Joe. I dont thinks thats really PC…. ohhhhhhhh. you didn’t mean, ok! the Arizona Cardinals! not – ok! I gotcha!

  12. ctord Says:

ah man, stop teasing us with what could have been.

lmao.. hell yeah! we need a TE too! wheres Shannon Sharpe at??!!

    ^^^^^ what he said.

  15. Joke Says:

Joe, there are comments flying around that the Bucs could get a compensatory 3rd-round pick for Freeman if someone signs him as a free agent in the offseason. Can you dig into that for us?

I’m not sure how compensatory picks work. I doubt a team would do it if they have to give up their own pick, but if it’s just an “extra” pick that gets created by the league to compensate the team losing the guy then I bet someone will pick him up.

  16. You Go Joe Says:

This is new??? It was mentioned before, back when FA started, however he was traded to the cards. He was going to be an expensive backup, but would’ve been a good one IMO. Better than a rookie at least.

  17. BFFL Says:

Expect a fire-sale if Glennon is bad. Revis and Jackson will be traded to get draft picks for the next GM. Trade Jackson to Seattle and that will force the 49ers to trade for Revis to defend Jackson.

  18. bucrightoff Says:

Joke, it’s kind of a complicated formula but the basic gist of it has to do with players added versus players lost. For instance, the Chiefs got a compensatory 3rd round pick last year with the following:

Lost:Brandon Carr, Le’Ron McClain, Kyle Orton, Barry Richardson
    Signed: Peyton Hillis, Brady Quinn

I don’t think the NFL reveals what the formula is, but the basic concept is compensation for overall player attrition.

  19. Eric Says:

So we can all agree that the most important draft choice ever made by Mark Dominik is a bust?

  20. Tampamac Says:

I’m not as down on Palmer as some. He was right around the elite category before his knee got shredded and he had horrible talent around him during his Oakland stint. I believed he would’ve been a nice stop gap to give Glennon a veteran who’s had some sustained success to learn behind.

  21. FLBoyInDallas Says:

I’m still LOL @ Joe and his staunch position that Freeman would play out the season. Just a piece of advice, Joe: be careful how freely you take such firm positions in a public forum. They inevitably come back to bite you.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

It’s just what I said last night in here. How do we fans know that Dom was not trying to bring in a QB in the off-season? This proves my point from last night. There are a A LOT of things we fans don’t know and can only speculate on. Well some of us speculate as if it’s a fact. Some of us also seem to think Schiano does all the hiring too and calls the offensive plays. I don’t have to name, names for you. Most of the JBF regs know who these people are.

Have fun being a speculator. I’m going to try to just remain a fan from now on. I’m also not going to fight with any more fans in here. Have fun trying to start one with me. I’m just going to ignore it, because it does no good.

  23. MakaevilTheDon Says:

It’s official. I am sorry. You guys were right.

Now can we just move on?

  24. SteveK (MGM) Says:

What does the Sour Pup 620 have to say?

Go Bucs! This was the best move for the Team, no doubt.

Freeman had all the opportunity in the world to assert himself.

  25. MR.T Says:

Off topic, but does anyone know why they cut Noble to bring back Spencer Larsen? Is something wrong with Lorig?

  26. lightningbuc Says:

    Sour Pup 620!

    That’s funny!

What’s really whacked, is he actually hates Joe Maddon – a proven winner – more than Greg Schiano.

  27. FLBoyInDallas Says:

Dumbig hates anyone who has authoritarian tendencies or who is just a strong leader. It threatens him. I imagine he had his lunch money taken from him growing up and is vicariously getting back at the bully by hating on Maddon and Schiano. The guy has no credibility and I hate to even mention him, though.

  28. BirdDoggers Says:

This just reinforces the fact that Freeman was on thin ice at the end of last season. Dominik wouldn’t be in the market for a veteran QB if Freeman was their guy. So why did Schiano and Dominik go the entire offseason telling Freeman he was the starter. I have to believe Freeman knew he wasn’t their guy but they had no other choice. You have a talented team and you’re going to pin your hopes to a guy you don’t even believe in at arguably the most important position in sports. Great plan guys.

  29. Deminion Says:

    Trade for Phillip rivers

  30. Allin4Atrain&47 Says:

Rumors of Philip Rivers up for trade. Bring him to Tampa, better than Glennon and he already has chemistry with VJax.

  31. MakaveliTheDon Says:

oh man. if what the big dg is insinuating is true… I might have to back off Schiano a bit. the drama just doesnt stop @ OBP. smh

  32. Tampamac Says:

    @Deminion,

I don’t think San Diego trades Rivers as he’s better than Freeman and is their best option. Mallett makes sense to me though because he’s stuck behind Brady for at least 3 more years and coming from the system he’s in is likely ready to play now.

  33. Couch Fan Says:

    What exactly is he insinuating?

  34. MakaveliTheDon Says:

how could I have missed the sniffles during his interviews and pressers. ASSUMING what big dog is implying is true. get well Josh.

  35. bucrightoff Says:

Philip Rivers is not available in the slightest right now. Maybe he craps the bed the rest of the year, but he’s playing at a top 5 level right now. 70% completion and an 8:1 TD to INT ratio is incredible, all with mediocre weapons. I’d love, love to have him, I just don’t think he’s realistically available.

  36. bucrightoff Says:

The insinuation has been made by a couple people here too: Josh likes to ski. Of note, there are no ski hills in Florida…

  37. lightningbuc Says:

Tried talking about JFro’s off field issues 4 months ago, but was dismissed as a hater and a liar by West Coast Buc Fan, among others.

  38. Couch Fan Says:

Well I hope thats not true. That would mean Free has a lot more issues than just football.

  39. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

    Tebow

  40. bucrightoff Says:

I really doubt its true, but the fact its even out there is troubling. And if it is true Josh has gotta take care of himself first, just like Aldon Smith. First part of solving a problem is admitting you have one.

  41. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

    Cut Freeman, Bring in TEBOW

  42. lightningbuc Says:

Boomer Esiason was a year ahead of everyone else. Joe dismissed him as knowing nothing!

  43. ImissAlstott&Lynch Says:

TEBOW would sell out RJStadium, avoid blackouts. Better hurry before Jacksonville gets the bright idea and scoops him up.

  44. Buc1987 Says:

In order for Teblow to work. Teams have to change their entire offensive scheme for him. Just like Denver did for him. I don’t see that happening at all.

  45. @CAeric Says:

Trade a #2 for Kirk Cousins………throw in Freeman with that deal so he and Bruce / Rah can united in DC……

  46. lightningbuc Says:

    Bruce did not draft Freeman!

  47. bucrightoff Says:

Kirk Cousins feels like a trap. He looked good at the end of a game against Baltimore, against a bad Cleveland team and…thats it. You also gotta remember IRGIII is likely to, well, end up hurt, so they need Cousins as insurance.

  48. PewterPirate Says:

Palmer was one of the better QBs in the league at one point so I’d take him or Rivers right now. The idea of a long term solution is good in theory but tell me you wouldn’t take Peyton for the few years he has left. Imagine if Denver had passed that up because “he wasn’t a long term solution.” Not that Palmer is Manning but at one point in their career Palmer was up there with Manning as some of the top QBs in the league. In the right situation he could thrive IMO.

  49. Fire! Says:

@BFFL Why would we start trading our only good parts just because Freeman sucks?

Like those trades would even go down. They are insane.

look at this loser trying to pose as me… nice try, you almost got away with it bucrightoff/couch/lightning.

  51. MakaveliTheDon Says:

^^^^^Its sad how I make so much sense that I stay inside your head like that…. good stuff!!

  52. bucrightoff Says:

Makaveli if I was gonna try and pose as you, or something similar, I’d certainly be a lot more creative than just changing a couple letters. I’d probably go with another Tupac reference like “Tupac’s in Cuba with Elvis” or something like that. The only person I would try and mimic their name for fun would be logicalvoicesays on PFT, because there is already like a dozen names there mimicing that.
