Captains “Didn’t Disagree”

While many think the move to bench franchise quarterback Josh Freeman, who led the NFL in inaccuracy, for rookie third round pick Mike Glennon would be the equivalent of rolling a live grenade into the Bucs locker room, Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times has an enlightening article that suggests that is not the case at all.

In fact, Stroud writes, the Bucs’ captains are on board with the move.

The idea behind making the change to Glennon now, rather than waiting until after the Cardinals game, is to give the young quarterback a chance to play Sunday and then have two weeks to review his mistakes and make corrections.

The Bucs team captains were informed of the decision Wednesday and many of them saw it coming and didn’t disagree with it. The locker room is not expected to be divided over the decision.

While Freeman played better in Sunday’s 23-3 loss to the Patriots and was victimized by dropped passes, the Bucs did not feel he was going to ever be consistent under Schiano.

The captains didn’t disagree? This after Freeman was not voted as a team captain earlier?

A guy walking around with a white cane can see what is going on here. The team, as in the players, had grown weary of Freeman’s All-Pro one day; Bobby Douglass the next-style of quarterbacking, this after four years in the NFL.

So the Bucs finally came to the conclusion that Freeman may not ever be consistent? What would ever lead them to this thought?

Freeman has never, ever been a consistent quarterback. He would tease you one day where he looked like the second coming of Ben Roethlisberger, the next day you wanted to drop $10k on a barrel of Jack Daniels he was so miserable.

Of course the captains are cool with it. They know Mike’s gonna be here next season and Josh isn’t. They also stripped Freeman of captaincy in the first place, an obvious sign they didn’t have a ton of respect for Freeman to begin with.

  2. Sheen Says:

Hey, remember when we benched Dilfer in favor of Eric Zeier. Different QB, same results.

  3. bucfanjeff Says:

Glennon is very smart (masters in 4 yrs?) so if he can learn quickly on the fly, well, that’s our benefit.

I’m firmly in his corner, as I was with Freeman. You’re now the starter – grip it and rip it.

  4. The_Buc_Realist Says:

If you could not see this coming then you did not listen at all to the off-season. the d-fence is looking better. now it is time for the offense to look better. as much as i dislike the pop-star, the bucs have had 2 good drafts, the NFL saying is that if you put up 3 good drafts in a row you will get a multiple playoff window in the future.

So do you have a white cane, Joe? Wasn’t it this page that yesterday gave us 6 reasons why this wasn’t going to happen? I love your page guys.. really I do, but come on!

  6. bucfanjeff Says:

And what’s with TampaBay.com charging for online content…uh, it’s not that good.

  7. ShutTheBucUp Says:

I’m not surprised by this. But I do know Penn will be pissed. Freeman is his buddy. As long as the offensive guys give Glennon a chance to succeed and don’t pack it in for the season, it should be interesting. I don’t have much hope for Glennon though. But I’m behind whoever is our QB. Man, its like I woke up in the twilight zone today!

  8. ShutTheBucUp Says:

    @bucfanjeff

yeah, i guess they don’t like readers

  9. Deminion Says:

This is just a pipe dream but it would b awesome if the bucs could swing a deal for Phillip rivers.., just sayin

  10. mike Says:

No one has thrown more INTs since 2011, so it was time. Freeman missing photos and his camp and who knows what else means this guy is not a leader and won’t take you anywhere. I hope the team will rally around glennon and find a way to win this week and then hit the buy with some energy. The D looks great and the O has more talent than any we have had in the last decade. I hope sullivan will call a good game!

Joe was referring to the players int he locker room. If you happen to have a quote from a player that he wanted Freeman benched, please provide the link.

  12. Danimal Says:

Its better not to waste anymore time on Josh, Trade him to one of the teams that thinks they can fix him. Not sure Glennon is the answer but I know Josh isn’t. Johnny Football?

  13. Deminion Says:

    Hope Glennon gets a W

  14. Harry Says:

    Told you so Joe… lol

  15. lightningbuc Says:

All these subsequent stories are not helping the Schiano haters’ narrative.

  16. Theodore Says:

This is awful. How is Freeman supposed to “get the team in position to win” if he is on the sidelines?

  17. lightningbuc Says:

Imagine that – professional football players able to recognize a turd at QB!

  18. lightningbuc Says:

Beginning to believe more and more that the players only meeting held before the season was indeed about JFRO’s commitment

  19. Couch Fan Says:

Today is a new era ladies and gents!! Even if Glennon sucks at least its change and not the same old Freeman crap over and over again. At least with Glennon there’s a possibility he may have “it”. Excited for the Glennon Era…

    GO BUCS!!

  20. FloridaGirl Says:

Sounds like the rumors that the real reason for the team meeting was the other players were doubting Freeman’s commitment to the team. The captains not disagreeing with the move now seems to solidify some of those rumors…..

  21. bucrightoff Says:

    Ugly….

    Peter King‏@SI_PeterKing2h
Freeman Benching No Surprise Dept.: Completion rates since start of 2012: Brandon Weeden .570, Blaine Gabbert, .569, Josh Freeman .535.

  22. crazy Says:

Schiano made his move to pin the blame on the GM. He better find a way to make #8 at least look competitive over the next few games. The GM built a team around a first round guy that hasn’t been competitive at all this year.

  23. SG5821 Says:

Looks like after getting into Josh’s head this offseason, coach has achieved what he wanted- Josh out of Tampa….

Curious about the coaches statement- You cannot create depth in 2 years- Does the coach not think highly of the players brought in before the coach arrived…

Tired of this double talk….GO BUCS

  24. SG5821 Says:

Ofcourse Mike Glennon will get a W… he is against the lowly Cardinals…. and then the coach will look good…. damn I hate this coach

  25. Joke Says:

Every time V Jax and Mike Will have dropped a pass (or not try to keep both feet inbounds), a little part of me has wondered if they weren’t trying to sabotage Josh because they’re sick of carrying him with fantastic grabs.

Learning (during the Pats game) that Mike’s been hurt all season made me think that’s less likely.

But at the end of the day, let’s just say I’m hoping our drops problem goes away with Glennon at QB.

  26. Capt. Tim Says:

    Here comes the Blitz!!
No TE, no slot Reciever over the middle. No back that can catch out of the backfield!( Lorig may help that)

Good luck Mike. I wouldn’t blame you if you walk of the field- and Slap Dom and Schiano both. No QB should be that handicapped.

  27. Leon Says:

Right… Man can’t wait for Schiano to be gone.

  28. gg720 Says:

    Capt. Tim,

Maybe, there will miraculously be improvement at TE and slot receiver now that Schiano got Freeman out of there. Backs can catch the ball out of the backfield if a QB could throw the ball to their arms instead of over their heads. Could it be he might have made things more difficult for JF knowing it was a way to get his guy in there more quickly. Curious to see how this all plays out because if it gets uglier, Schiano will be calling Rutgers to get his job back.

  29. rhenry Says:

Maybe we can coax Brett Farve out of retirement. LOL

  30. Otto Says:

Arizona had their two OLBs and safety injured last week. There is a good chance Glennon will have a better completion percentage than Freeman (possibly a win), then have two weeks to prepare for a struggling Eagles team. If Glennon starts out 2-0, Schiano will look like a genius. If not, we still rid ourselves of one of the worst performing QBs in the league this year. There’s not much downside.

  31. MakaveliTheDon Says:

Phase 1 of The New Schiano Takeover is complete.

    1) Take Out Freeman – check
    2) Take out Sully, Promote McNulty –
    3) Undermine and Take Out Dominik –
    4) Assume the Role of HC & GM like Belicheat –
    5) Start Rebuilding!

    PJ Fleck (former assistant):

“He had a hand in every aspect of that program. He wasn’t just the football coach, he was everything. He was the marketing director. He was the fundraiser. He was the recruiting coordinator. Greg could do anything. He did do everything.”

  32. CaliBucsFan Says:

Do you think the Bucs would entertain the idea of Johnny Football?? I think he would be re-energize our fan base! What do you think Bucs Fans??

  33. MakaveliTheDon Says:

@Glennon, go out and get us your first win on Sunday! You dont have to carry this team, just stay consistent. Youre our new QB, and I’ll support you 100%

  34. MakaveliTheDon Says:

@Joe, arent you on 620 today??

just thought you might want to update that plug. you guys should get record listeners today…. I’ll be tuned in as always.

  35. Young-buc_361 Says:

I was down with Freeman now I am down with Glennon wish we still had solider boy Winslow bad knees and all still made plays

  36. Patrickbucs Says:

Still cannot believe this. I hope the kid does well or a possible 1st round QB or a de from South Carolina. If a lot of these reports were/are true they should have traded Freeman in the offseason and upped the ante for Palmer.

I hate to be a “no source reporter” but for the Saints game they were asking some of their sponsors if they would be upset if Freeman’s was removed from some of the marketing lit if that would be ok. Thats from a good friends wife, thought she was mistaken now i owe an apology. I guess where there is smoke there is fire.
