“We’re Not A Dirty Team And We’re Not Going To Slow Down”

September 19th, 2013

Early on The Gerald McCoy Show on WDAE-AM 620 last night, the man for which the show is named said he wasn’t going to say much about Dashon Goldson’s suspension.

“That’s a tough situation [Goldson] was in. But I’m not going to elaborate on it because it’s over with,” McCoy said. “He won [the appeal], and he’s playing this week.”

Then McCoy opened up a handful of minutes later.

“I don’t think we’re doing anything differently in practice,” McCoy said about what the Bucs are doing to eliminate their illegal hits. “They’ve just made us more aware of it, with what they show us on film and the penalties we have received from helmet-to-helmet hits. They’ve slowed them down. And we’ve went over them. And they’ve explained to us why this is a violation and how anytime that situation comes up they’re going to call it. Because their priority is to protect offensive players. And it’s just, I mean it’s just our game. It’s something we have to get used to. But we’re not doing anything different in practice.

“We’re not a dirty team and we’re not going to slow down. You know, we play on the edge and we’re going to continue to play on the edge. That’s just who we are.”

As Joe detailed extensively to The Big Dog, Steve Duemig of WDAE-AM 620, last night, what’s happening now with the Bucs defense is a dream come true for Greg Schiano. The Rutgers defense is working in the NFL. It’s intimidating. It’s leading the league in sacks. It’s not allowing a lot of points. Schiano is not going to mess with it. It’s working, and the fines aren’t his money. Schiano wants his team flying around and playing on the edge while trying to follow the rules.

Expect nothing to change other than, hopefully, eliminating the unquestionably dirty hits like the one delivered by Ahmad Black on Sunday.

They lead the league in penalties and fines ….
Which by the way is clearly Freeman’s fault ..:)
    Lol

  2. MadMax Says:

The ZEBRAS need to change…or else its going to cost eyeballs! PREACH IT SIR McCOY!!!!

  3. Raphael Says:

We would be 2-0 without a lot of those penalties …fact

  4. bucrightoff Says:

We would be 2-0 if Alex Smith was our QB…fact.

  5. Sneedy16 Says:

It’s the offensive penalties that pisses me off. Big plays called back because they aren’t lined up correctly.. Ex. Vincent Jackson TD called back because Dotson wasn’t on the line… Game would been over with.

  6. MadMax Says:

    ROFLMFAO @raphael facts….

The D kept us close and winning, and the “Free” created the “keeping us close” to begin with….until his red bull kicks in….in the final minutes of the game….

@raph, dammmmnn you are strange (i dont care though)

  7. Sneedy16 Says:

    @bucrightoff

False. He would’ve been on IR with the pass blocking issues we were having.. lol

  8. Sneedy16 Says:

One thing I noticed was that the top defenses in the league are up there in penalties.

  9. Niko Says:

Last year the D was NO. 1 against the run, and anyone who says thats because everyone passed against us doesnt know how to read a stat sheet. Look at the run per carry. Look at the top 5 teams. The NO.5 team had even less carries than we did. The others had maybe 10-18 more carries. Big deal.

Now…we have the top red zone offense after playing Drew Brees and Co. This guy carves us up like a Turkey, but not this defense. We lead the NFC in Sacks.

So lets see what happens this week in New England, but don’t be surprised if the Bucs don’t come home with a win.

  10. Niko Says:

Correction…top red zone DEFENSE…not offense. I dont think anyone would have taken that error seriously LOL

  11. 76buc76 Says:

Offences feared head injurys Vs the Buc’s. Now they must fear their legs and ribs.

  12. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

Coach Bryan Cox’s front seven are playing lights out, the rest of the team, not so much.

Funny how the Little General seems to take credit for anything that works.

  13. 76buc76 Says:

We’ll clean up the peneltys, then we’ll be unstoppable. Oh wait Gosh will still be the QB. Never mind. I can see us holding the Pat’s offence down. But what does Freeman project against a very good turnover defence? 12/30 for 170 yard’s 1TD 3Int’s. The good news is he will hit the 50% plateau. If you include the 3 compleation’s to the other team. Get this clown out of there before he sabatoges the season

  14. Bobby Says:

Everybody keeps talking about our defense and thinks we SHOULD be shutting down the other offenses but fact is both defenses we have played are ranked higher than ours. The Jets have the #2 ranked defense and I believe the Saints have the 11th ranked defense. Funny how when our defense makes the other team struggle on offense it’s the way it should be but when our offense struggles we act like the other teams defense sucks and we should be scoring 40 points. Bottom line is, penalties are really hurting us on offense. When you play good defenses you can’t afford to make mistakes. Dropped passes and penalties like the one on Dotson, interceptions, etc. just take their toll. I think we’ll get it going, although New England does have the 8th ranked defense. Should be another close game.

  15. 76buc76 Says:

Watch these QB’s tonight. Vick and Smith have taken huge hit’s. Doing everything they can do to get a W. Notice how Freeman NEVER takes big hit’s. I’ve allway thought he was smart by protecting himself. But at this point don’t even hook slide. What a shocker last week when he pulled it down and ran for the first down.

  16. 76buc76 Says:

Ranking’s are squewed 2 weeks into the season. The Pat’s have faced 2 rookie QB’s. I don’t think anyone had us as a great defence after the Jet’s game. Because the jet’s offence is bad. But everybody know’s the Saint’s offence is a great offence. So we do get props for that performance. Althou it could be a one off. What you see with youe eyes is probably a better indicator than the number’s at this point. Do the Raider have a great defence or did they just play the Jags

  17. Buc1987 Says:

For 2weeks in a row the Bucs D looks solid. This Sunday will tell us a lot more about just how good they are or will be. NE had 10 days off to rest and prepare for the Bucs D. I don’t see the Bucs D slowing ANYTHING down. How do you like your Br-ady cooked, fried, broiled, seared, baked, or sauteed?

  18. bucsQcCity Says:

If Schiano succeed at “fixing” the penalties, I’ll revise my judgement on him and gives him credit for its defense, I can’t deny the fact that they lead the NFL in sacks up far. I rewatched on NFL GamePass the last game and I do like the way they attacked Brees last week. Clayborn was an absolute terror lining up in a 2 points stance. Our linebackers are roaming sideline to sideline and our safeties aren’t afraid to go down in the box.

Plus Revis denying a TD on the flea flicker was a real beauty to watch.

I noted that Bowers play did improved from preseason and the first game. Still not as disruptive as I would want to see him but with all those stunts , it’s hard to evaluate its contribution only on sacks and tackles. Competition between Casillas and Watson does seems to help both of them to raise their game. LJ is still the weakest link by far on that defense.

  19. Raphael Says:

    1987. … Defense solid ??

Jets had 40 seconds and no timeouts, and the defense blew it .
Saints marched right down the field and won the game ..

    Solid as a Swiss cheese

  20. Outlaw53 Says:

I was just reading the article on PFT that showed McCoy stating that “we’re not a dirty team…” Huh? Three PF calls in one half…two of them accounting for fines of $121,00 dollars? How then would he define a “dirty team”? How many PF calls and what amount of fines would define any team as “dirty”? While I do think the Bucs were capable of winning last Sunday ( except for Freeman going 9 for 22 )…karma is a beatch…..

  21. bucrightoff Says:

Where’s the Freeman “Thriller” pictorial Raphael?

  22. MadMax Says:

@bucsQcCity, preach it Brother…Dammmm you need to post here more often!!!

@Buc1987, like I said last week…blitz like a mofo and play man in the backfield. NE and Brady has ISSUES (receiver issues).

I hope they see this. Man I was calling for them to double team Graham last week and they were beat up most by him.

@Outlaw53, dude, you CLEARLY didnt see those plays….go watch Suh and then get back to us!

  23. MadMax Says:

Alright, what gives with these friggin filters JoeGuys?
