Schiano: “Josh Is Gonna Be Just Fine”

September 16th, 2013

Greg Schiano is not happy with his passing game, so he said today at One Buc Palace, but Schiano said the problems are not just Josh Freeman.

Schiano blamed coaching, protection, throwing and catching, and just about everything else related to the offense.

The head coach showed no lack of confidence in No. 5 when asked specifically about his confidence in Freeman.

“Josh is gonna be fine. Josh is gonna be just fine,” Schiano said.

So there you have it. Joe suspects Freeman will be up and down and up and down as long as he’s in the lineup this season. That’s what Freeman is: inconsistent.

  1. Couch Fan Says:

So far he’s just been down and down.

  2. bucrightoff Says:

I don’t know, if he’s still the 40’s for a completion percentage at the bye and the Bucs are 0-4 I cannot imagine he’s the starter coming out of the bye. Certainly the majority of the fanbase will have moved on by that point.

  3. Ruggyup Says:

This Bucs fan for decades has probably spewed out more than his share of criticism over the years, this one included. I’m now at the point where I truly believe it’s time to shut up, give these coaches and players a positive environment to solve their own issues and believe in what it takes to win. If the season ends in a losing mess then is the time to fire all their sorry asses, not now. Come on! Let’s get that cannon firing loud and often.

  4. Jordon Says:

I like Josh, but I just don’t know that I see him as the long term answer at QB. Is it time to switch to Glennon? Only Schiano/Dominik can make that call, but through the preseason and two weeks of the regular season Freeman has not looked sharp, has made some poor throws, has been out of sync with some of his receivers and has struggled to move the chains. All the while our Defense has been playing their asses off, getting turnovers and keeping us in both games. Something’s gotta give or this team will completely fracture in two!

  5. lightningbuc Says:

Josh is gonna be just fine…..holding the clipboard!

  6. mpmalloy Says:

Freeman strikes me as one of the surfer dudes who is never going
go into full “fight or flight” where one chooses the
    FIGHT option over flight.
Instead of getting that pissed-off look like Brees had before the last
drive Josh gets this kind of mopey, woe-is-me body language.

    WAKE THE **** UP JOSH!!!
Play like your families life hangs in the balance.
Practice until you’re sick and you DREAM about cadences.
Tell your friends to ****-off and practice, practice, practice
    practice, practice, practice,practice, practice, practice
    practice, practice, practice,practice, practice, practice

  7. bucfanjeff Says:

    He is inconsistent.
He has also led us to potential go-ahead scores at the end of both games.
He doesn’t play defense, he doesn’t kick FG’s.
He does need to do more before the end of the game.

Schiano is right about one thing, it’s not just Freeman.

No TE and No #3 WR hurts…a lot. Those aren’t even threats, not even close. If the defense can disregard for the most part our TE and #3 WR, that makes game planning a little more simplified.

I’m a Freeman fan, but I’ve long said this is a prove it year and he’s not doing enough at this point, IMO. BUT…Glennon would be much, much worse….and after 2 games, I’m not throwing in the towel. The sky is not falling.

    Until the bye week…

  8. Splengo Says:

Josh is gonna be just fine. Translation: now don’t you guys go putting any ideas in Freeman’s head about wanting a trade. I need him to cover for my losses until I get my guy ready to take over. Then I will kick him to the curb. All a part of my plan from day one. Smart HuH!

  9. mpmalloy Says:

I’ll bet you dollars to donuts that Brees works 3x as
    hard as Freeman.

  10. Warrenfb12 Says:

I think Freeman apologists have gone from “Josh is a good QB” to “Josh is an inconsistent QB.”

Here is the truth of the situation:

Josh Freeman is a consistently bad QB. <- Fact Mode

  11. kennyc Says:

Protection? The protection was awesome! I am a freeman supporter, but he sucked last night!!! He had great protection, a great running performance and a lights out D. It is clear schiano DOES NOT trust freeman. I am also sick of hearing “Tight Ends are used a bunch” in sullivans office, get with the program its a passing leauge now and EVERY good team has a good TE. I hope crabtree can be that guy.

  12. Buc1987 Says:

I think if Josh looks sharp and the D shows up again, the Bucs will beat the Pats next week. I just don’t see Josh looking all that sharp. I do however predict a win at N.E. and if he looks like crap. In comes Glennon week 4.

If Josh however does look sharp and the Bucs win, he keeps his status heading into week 4. Hopefully he does snap out of it (I don’t see it happening though) and the Bucs beat Zona at home as well to come into a much needed bye at 2-2. It’s all up to the coaches though. They are going to have to fix him or fix themselves and cater to what works for him. 2-2 at the bye would be just fine by me. I hope that I’m right. I think every Buc fan hopes that I’m right. I just don’t know anymore. A once excited Bucs fan has been reduced to hope.

  13. Kevin Says:

HEY GREG SCHIANO!!!!!!!!!!!!! GET YOUR NOSE OUT OF THE OFFENSIVE PLAYBOOK MAN!!!!!WHAT’S THE PROBLEM HERE?????? YES I GET IT JOSH FREEMAN IS NOT EVER GOING TO BE AN ELITE OPTION AT QB….BUT BETWEEN JACKSONS BIG DROPS, THE REF’S DOG PILING ON TH EBUCS FOR THE SECOND WEEK IN A ROW AND YOU GREG, PUTTING YOUR OWN PERSONAL STAMP ON THIS OFFENSE BY RUNNING THE GOD DAMN BALL EVERY SINGLE FIRST DOWN WE HAD, MY LITTLE 10 YEAR OLD NEPHEW SAT NEXT TO ME LAST NIGHT AND TOLD ME EXACTLY WHETHER THE 2ND AND THIRD DOWN PLAYS WOULD BE RUNS OR PASSES. LET SULIVAN RUN THE PLAYCALLING OR YOU WILL LOSE YOUR LAST OPPORTUNITY TO COACH IN THIS LEAGUE. I LOVE WHAT HAS BEEN DONE WITH THE D BUT FOR CHRIST SAKE GIVE FREEMAN A CHANCE TO PLAY HIS BEST. AGAIN…I KNOW HE’S NOT AN ELITLE QB BUT WHEN YOUR PLAYING A HIGH POWERED OFFENSE, IT SEEMS LIKE IT MAKES JUST A TINY BIT OF SENSE TO THROW THE BALL ON AT LEAST 25% OF OUR FIRST DOWNS TO TRY AND THROW THEM OFF SOMEWHAT. THIS IS A JOKE THE COACHING LOST THIS GAME ALONG WITH JOSH FREEMANS INABILITY TO GROW THE BALLS TO CHECK OUT OF THE RUN ON FIRST DOWN AND THROW THE BALL. PERIOD OVER AND OUT. ….DISGRUNTLED BUCS FAN!!!

  14. Buc1987 Says:

Cue Raphael at any moment. I hope he is okay and was not cyber-bullied into submission.

  15. Buc1987 Says:

    Kevin…HA… I FEEL YOUR PAIN!!!!

  16. Al Says:

“Bust In Waiting” changed into “Bust Is Here”

  17. MIKE Says:

I DID NOT SEE NO HEAD BAGS ON. LOOK. WE WHERE TOLD THAT JOSH IS A LOT BETTER THIS YEAR, I DON’T SEE IT IF HE IS. ITS THE SAME OLD SAME OLD.. YOU DON’T SEE HIM ON THE SIDE LINES STANDING BY THE COACHES AND INTERESTED IN THE TEAM OR WHATS GOING ON OUT ON THE FIELD AT ALL. BUT IF YOU PUT A VIDEO GAME IN FRONT OF HIM I WOULD BET HE WOULD BE MORE INTERESTED IN THE VIDEO GAME THEN WHATS GOING ON THE FIELD. BUC’S 4-12 2013……..

  18. #1BUC Says:

Im sorry but josh needs to go, we have a hall of fame worthy RB and good WR’s like ogletree and vincent (dont forget about Mike!) and a wicked nasty D fence that was able to put Brees out on the bench! only one thing we can fix, and its not even like hes under pressure either he almost always has time in the pocket.

  19. Mike10 Says:

Ya this means nothing…like pat yasinkas (or however u spell him) said, if this keeps up, 5 isn’t gonna be here in ’14. But I agree w Pat that Schiano could be ruining Free’s style

  20. bucrightoff Says:

Greg Schiano sucks so bad at coaching he’s made 2011’s abortion of a defense already be totally forgotten. What a terrible coach.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

MIKE..I did however see Glennon warming up in the 3rd. Look the division is still wide open right now. As far as I’m concerned Atlanta, Carolina and N.O. are beatable. The problem is so are the Bucs.

  22. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Freeman would have much better stats if the drops were caught and if the penalties were not stripping yards away.

  23. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Freeman says he feels no pressure….that nothing bothers him….that he is totally unaware of rumors….
Josh may be our Ricky Williams…..maybe he longs to retire early with millions and smoke weed and pull a Tiger Woods with some Dale Mabry dancers.
That’s what Schiano meand by “Josh will be OK…he’ll be just fine”
If we don’t win and win with our Offense performing by the bye…Glennon will start. The only risks to that would be to find out that Glennon wasn’t a good pick or needs a lot more time to develop…..but actually, that would be a good thing to find out.

  24. tampa2 Says:

BuccaneerBonzai – Ok. Lets add on on the 3 drops. Now, lets add on the 72yrd catch. That comes out to (drumroll) 12-22 for 198 yrds. Hey guess what?! That still sucks a fat one. Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers had drops to. Everyone does. It’s part of the game. Lets stop making excuses. We have the most inconsistent qb in the entire league. A commenter above nailed it. I bet Drew Brees, Peyton Manning etc work 3 times as hard as Josh. Not to mention they are real leaders. When Josh Freeman is GONE come 2014 I hope king Freemanite (ball licker) Raphael leaves along with him. He can cheer for his boy while he is throwing 3 interceptions with Minnesota. Gosh Freetard can make those “what, who me???” looks while he is wearing purple. The color purple better suits Josh

  25. lightningbuc Says:

    BucBonzai,

All QBs have receivers drop passes that effect their stats. It’s all relative. Next excuse please!

  26. Pete 422 Says:

I’ve been a Freeman supporter, but he doesn’t look good. Tony Dungy was even saying “Freeman looks lost out there.” John Lynch was a big Freeman guy but obviously not now. I say give the kid a shot.

  27. Pete 422 Says:

@mpmalloy: I’m with you in the work ethic. I’m sure Brees works insanely hard.

  28. 76buc76 Says:

I bet this source close to Freeman is……his Dad

  29. Rahb Says:

I wonder how many “Josh Sucks” Guys even played Football! I’ll go with a Guy who has played at the NFL LEVEL….A HOFer in fact. Oh Yeah, Why Not a Buccaneer HOFer. WARREN SAPP “Where was Josh when I played”, was what Sapp said during the off-Season when this FREEMAN BS was Started by Gregory.

This wouldn’t even be a topic of discussion if Schiano didn’t make it one. Had Marky D Signed Freeman to a new deal like the Falcons and Cowboys had done with their QBs the only thing we’d be discussing
IS WHAT WE SHOULD BE DISCUSSING

GREG SCHIANO IS NOT NFL COACHING MATERIAL! Dammit, Raheem Morris won more games with Far Less Talent. So why did the Bucs Draft a QB with their 2nd selection in the draft when there were far more potent needs for PLAYERS WHO PLAY?

To secure Josh Freeman as his scape goat. “JOSH IS GONNA BE FINE” Alright, throwing TDs in the 2014 playoffs for the Minnesota Vikings while the deconstruction of the Buccaneers Continues then BOOM…Schiano gets an offer from another minor conference college say Bucknell and Bolts back where he F’in Belongs and Bucs Fans are left staring at the New (Jack Thompson) and a decade of DOUBLE DIGIT LOSSES

WAKE UP IDJITS…..This is the NFL, not friggin Madden. Teams are an Emolgamation of Players Joined in a Common Cause, the Coach is only there to ensure their Talents are put to the best Use.

  30. Bobby Says:

    Tampa 2 says:

“BuccaneerBonzai – Ok. Lets add on on the 3 drops. Now, lets add on the 72yrd catch. That comes out to (drumroll) 12-22 for 198 yrds.”

Actually that would be 13 for 22 for 198 and a 59% completion. Let’s not forget he doesn’t throw AND catch the ball. Mike Williams gets his feet in there is another. How many balls were close? One off of Ogletree’s fingertips on a bomb. One to V-JAx that I though should have been pass interference on Jenkins. When you only throw the ball 22 times (Only one QB threw fewer times.. Russell Wilson who was 8 for 19 and 142 yards) it doesn’t take a lot to make your stats look bad. A few drops, a few close ones that just miss and all of a sudden the stats say you had a horrible day but did you really?? They don’t give Freeman a chance to do much of anything until they need a drive in the final minutes of the game and then they turn him loose. Just once I’d like to see them get him out of the pocket for the entire game, run play action when the run game is going and lets see if Josh can revert back to 2010 when they didn’t hand cuff him.

  31. Kodaslc Says:

How about a couple of screen plays on 1st down build some confidence !!! And it still helps Greg get the ball in Martin hands without running up the guy every first down… And maybe Martin pops a long run and helps freeman get on track

  32. bucrightoff Says:

He’s gonna go the Minnesota and lead them to the playoffs. Huh..

VJax > Every receiver on Minnesota combined
MWilliams > Every receiver on Minnesota
Dougernaut < AP, but its not a boat race. Both top 5 backs.
We have a TE? Vikes O-Line, not particularly close
    Bucs D > Vikes D

And somehow, despite the fact the only true advantage the Vikes have over the Bucs is TE, and the fact the NFC North is as hard or harder than the NFC South, Freeman is going there and taking them straight to the playoffs. I really want the drugs these people have.

  33. bucrightoff Says:

Wow that cut some off haha. Rudolph is better than our TE, (????), and our OLine trumps theirs.

  34. Bobby Says:

Look, say what you want about Schiano but he has turned this defense into something special. I love what he is doing there…it’s the offense that I have a problem. Sully has to wake up and realize that the very definition of predictable is running the ball on first down every friggin’ time. What about play action? What about short slants to pick up 6 on first down and set up manageable 2nd and 3rd downs? How about letting Freeman run more often when he has a lane?? Is that too much to ask?!!?

  35. coopsxx Says:

I guess I am in the minority, but i think JF is a victim of poor stats rather than poor play.

2 dropped 3rd downs by VJ (it happens, vj is great, but still no one mentions that, just JF’s end stats).

    70+ yard TD pulled back.

At least 5 penalties that put JF in a position to fail/force it/settle for a low % pass.

By no means do i think he is great, or where he should be at this point in his career, but there is a lot of analysis by people who just looked at the stats and didn’t watch the performance. The end result is also that if we hadn’t blown the last minutes in both games (defence / special teams), we would be 2-0 and JF rallied for game winning field goals.

So far I am the only person to have made this argument from what I have read/listened too.

  36. Eric Says:

Defense isn’t special unless u like losing.

  37. bucrightoff Says:

I think every one’s reaction in the game thread to the play Josh ran the ball was pretty funny: Where has that gone?

  38. gotbbucs Says:

At this point it’s not really a question of if, it’s a question of when. Freeman looks completely out of sorts in between every series as Sullivan holds his hand back to the bench to have him work on his ABC’s of football. After five years it seems like they are still trying to teach him the basics and none of what they tell him translates to the field.
Like others have said, drops are part of every Qb’s problem on every Sunday. Get over it. It’s the late throws across the middle and throwing behind the receivers on slants that kill me about Freeman. The clock inside his head does not work and he doesn’t have a quick enough release to fit balls in on seam passes. Somebody tell me the last time we even threw anything down the seam. He’s just not a serviceable NFL QB. He just doesn’t understand the game enough.
I’m not even going to start on the coaching. The biggest problem with our coaching staff is we have too big of a coaching staff, and believe me, that can be a problem. There are too many voices and too many opinions. I’m not going to pretend I know what’s being said between coaches on head sets like some guys on here. Somehow some of you know that Schiano is calling both the offense and the defense throughout the game. Great lip readers I guess. We have an OC in his second year of calling plays at any level, maybe we have a problem there. Sullivan and Freeman sitting on the bench together staring at defensive formations is the blind leading the blind in my opinion. I think Sullivan needs to get up in the box and let Freeman learn how to be a big boy down there on the sideline all by himself. Honestly, if Freeman doesn’t understand what he’s seeing on the field after five years then showing him pictures on the sideline isn’t going to help either.

  39. Raphael Says:

Lol @ the haters … 35 responses and all but bobby are completely hatin on the guy..it’s hilarious to me. this is not All on Josh! If you don’t believe me listen to Schiano, or Steve White..

Or continue to form your dumbarse opinion and spew your ignorant banter back in forth amoung yourselves, I don’t care .

1987 …do you really think I care what anybody here thinks of me? I have a lot of friends and I travel the world.. I will be in Vancouver next week but I still might post …FYI

  40. tonytwocents Says:

    Guys, we are DONE!

Freeman, good luck buddy. Youre only 25, there are plenty of offensive coaches who would love to design some plays to suit you.

Schiano, go ahead and make the move to Glennon. And pray 3 times a day that Glennon doesnt play like a 3rd round QB who had a god awful preseason.

Glennon, youre still a Buc. And I’ll support you if youre behind center. But with this towns fans, for the love of god, do not throw an incompletion!

  41. tonytwocents Says:

Raph, Im with you brutha, but I think its time to come to terms with Freemans departure and the waste of this season.

  42. Kevin Says:

Ralph we are not all hating on Josh. We are all being realistic about Freeman and Schiano. I like Freeman….but he does not have the mental capacity to realize that if he does not run with this offense and call his own plays he will be gone. I know he can play it just almost seems as if he doesn’t really care. I see why you have plenty of haters of your own on here. Do you have naked posters of Josh Freeman over your bed???

  43. Raphael Says:

Kevin..the biggest problem right know is controll freak Schiano won’t let Josh just play, relax be yourself run the ball , change the play ….not gonna happen and there are some star players pissed at Schiano right now .

  44. tonytwocents Says:

The Glazers will let Schiano bench Freeman. And may God have mercy on his soul if Schiano’s project QB is no better than Freeman.

Players will go to Dom & the Brothers. And the Brothers will listen to their players.

Who do you thin the Glazers will side with if theres a mutiny, 3 mill/yr HC, or the 100 mill island, 45 mill Hawk, 55 mill VJ, MW19.

Who gave VJ his BEST season of his career??? Whose responsible for MW19s sucess??

Ok, lemme calm down. Freeman should go… For his own sake and nothing more.

THEN Id like to see what you haters will blame next… THATd be interesting!

  45. tampa2 Says:

“Actually that would be 13 for 22 for 198 and a 59% completion.” So – this is the bar we are setting? Because you act like that’s stellar. And don’t compare Freeman to Russell Wilson guy. Russell Wilson has had more good games in his first yr and is already more consistent than Josh has been his entire career. They don’t belong in the same sentence. Also, in case you weren’t aware, 2010 was a long time ago. Plenty of Quarterbacks and players in general have had a solid yr only to not have had another good yr again. You know what’s gnna be REALLY special??? Freeman going 12-27 next week for 180 yrds or something terrible again with none other than Aqib Talib snagging one of his INT’s. Tony Dungy – “he looks lost out there.” You see that Raphael?

  46. stanglassman Says:

When did Bucs fans get so Dam stupid? If you think Josh lost this last game you are either so blinded by your hatred of Freeman or you just don’t know much about football.

  47. tampa2 Says:

tonytwcent – You have a two cent brain and you can’t see the forrest through the trees. You are obviously content with inconsistent mediocrity. Cool story though.

That’s what it is, blinded by hatred. It’s a conspiracy. lol. Forget the facts (9-22 125) You prefer to point out something that isn’t even tangible, and speculatory at best. Yep we’re just haters!! The go to retort for ‘tards. It’s mighty cute that you puff your chest out and say Josh isn’t the reason and then proceed to not follow it up with a reason.

  49. GRIF4FREESUX Says:

@raphael,ur pretty cool online Mr. world-traveler but judging from your spelling u don’t seem very educated.

  50. Kevin Says:

Ralph, I understand what Schiano is more than likely telling Josh…but MY point is that if Freeman REALLY gave a shit, he would do what he wants and win games. The coach can’t go running out on the field every time Josh does his own thing, and if Freeman get’s big gains and sustains drives like we know he can in doing so, what is Schiano gonna do take him out of the game???Start Glennon over someone who is winning….NO!!!! That’s my point….if Freeman has the potential and ability but he chooses to allow Schiano to determine his fate for him. He has no fucking balls and it hurts me to say that having been a supporter of his all this time. But in his situation with him not showing the fire and taking his job and becoming a leader…maybe Schiano is exploiting him for being week minded and having no drive to succeed. Sorry man but Freeman is not the Gem many once hoped for. Plain and simple he has no balls.

  51. tonytwocents Says:

hey, tampa2, you win…. lets start Glennon! then come see me at the end of the year so I can put on a glove, take it off, and smack you in the face with it.

  52. tonytwocents Says:

damn., first its all rational and cool headed, all the ‘necks just show up in droves!

  53. Raphael Says:

Kevin..we will disagree on that..the nextbtimemyour boss tells you to do something, tell him nope , I don’t think so bud…

And if your boss is paying you 8 million a year , you can still tell him no I don’t think so …lol

  54. Raphael Says:

Tonytwocents ..lol…. it’s like a clan rally just let out or something …

  55. Jbyrd Says:

If any of you who actually watched yesterday’s game wants to pin it on Freeman you have no idea what you’re watching. Other than maybe two plays it was not on Freeman. He did the best with what he was given. He made some nice plays despite what was going on around him and the crappy play calling.

  56. Harry Says:

“Gonna be just fine”. Too funny. You know what is NOT funny? Being so depressed over the play of what should be a possible playoff Bucs team that it caused me to check out 2014 draft projections. And almost as troublesome, now some idiot will come along and comment about me being negative. How stupid can ppl be?

  57. Rahb Says:

    @ bucrightoff

    NEWS FLASH GENIUS:
The Vikings Made the Playoffs Last Year without a QB who can throw 25 TDs and 4,000 Yrds. Yes, the Vikings can Be A Playoff Team with Freeman, they already were with Ponder.

Pay Attention…..The issue Is not Freeman’s Talent, its a matter of a QB having his Coaches Support. A QB who doesn’t have the full support of his current Coach cannot get anything accomplished!!!!

  58. Couch Fan Says:

Freeman needed V-jax and Martin to throw 4000 yards. You are delusional if you think Free can go to Minnesota and throw 4000 yards.

  59. Couch Fan Says:

    And Williams*

  60. stanglassman Says:

Tampa2 As long as you understand you are in a very small minority that thinks it was Freeman’s fault that the Bucs lost the game Sunday. I didn’t feel like there was a real need to prove what most people already believe to be true. The Bucs did not lose Sunday because of the poor performance of Josh Freeman. You can be the biggest internet tough guy in the world and it won’t change that fact. Bad gameday coaching, stupid penalties, chicken sh!t ref calls, dropped passes (again), not having a better game plan to stop Graham (we are back to bad coaching) were bigger factors than Freeman’s play.

  61. stanglassman Says:

*missed field goal has to be in there before blaming the QB as well.
