NFL Ponders Goldson Suspension

Bucs defenders (sans Darrelle Revis) like to brag about how high-hitting, sometimes-illegal tackling is what they do and they are not about to change their ways.
This stubbornness will end up costing some players a bunch of cash and, likely, playing time.
Per the Twitter feed of NFL insider Adam Schefter, the league is discussing suspending Bucs safety Dashon Goldson.
@AdamSchefter: NFL is considering suspending Bucs S Dashon Goldson for Sunday’s helmet-to-helmet hit as well as his hit history. … Since 2010, Bucs S Dashon Goldson has 15 personal fouls, more than any NFL player. The one Sunday might be tipping point.
Simply put, it is irresponsible not to follow and abide by the NFL rules when they change. For better or — in Joe’s eyes — worse, the NFL is going after headhunting.
Look, when the NFL changes rules dealing with holding, blocking below the waste, and other elements of the game, players adjust. Why can’t (won’t?) Goldson and the Bucs?
Or is there a reason the 78 College of Coaches on Greg Schiano’s staff cannot coach these guys up?

Goldson’s hits are always football plays. Brandon Merriweather meanwhile is a classic head hunter. If Goldson gets suspended and Merriweather doesn’t, his belief the Bucs may be marked gains credibility.

Merriweather is far worse … And Suh doesn’t get suspended for hits to the leg AFTER a play and Dashon might for a hit during a play …

Hey Joe, are you trying to set a record for the number of articles you write about the same subjects just so you can keep the hits coming? Agree with some recent posters, this site is heading downhill. Miss the old site that had actual factual Bucs news; not just speculation articles, drama news, the same subjects just rehashed over and over and more screen space for ads than actual articles. Can’t wait for the next article where we find out what Kim Kardashian thinks of Schiano’s and Freeman’s relationship. Could always change the name to TMZBucFan the way this site is headed.

Headhunting is not even making a football play and just going for the head. Goldson has 2 legal hits for which he got fined and this one is helmet to helmet sure, but nothing malicious in his intent, just making a play. Watch Merriweather on Eddie Lacy and if you still think Goldson is a headhunter compared to that, I don’t know what to say.

Joe stop crying…these guys play 1000 mph…and dont give me that “other players can adjust” or “other coaches coach there guys up to hit the right way crap”… If you are a hard hitting safety you cant change the way you play..Goldson is making football plays.. Receivers are ducking their heads. Ed Reed, Goldson, Bethea, chancellor, Barron.all those guys play one way..Its not like Goldson is hitting guys late. He is playing football..you cant change the way you hit..he is aiming for the chest…but what if he hits then and they dont fall or he hits them and they bounce right back up..then there is no flag.! You cant teach that sh*t in practice joe. You just cant.

“defenseless’ receiver is the stupidest term created for a player on the football field. Players and the league understand the risks associated with the game. All these new player designations and asking a defensive player to hit a moving target consistently in an very small “strike zone” are ridiculous. These flags impact the outcome of every game. Refs are deciding games now, not the players.

I think it will take a while for players to adjust to the new rules. They’re being asked to change the way they play the game. Maybe we’ll see a reduction in penalties from the next generation of players, when they grow up learning different techniques.

I think it is silly for you to expect a player to control his body on a bang bang play. The black penalty was unnecessary. Goldson is just playing with speed

I truly hope that the NFL does not suspend Goldson. He is a big part of that defense. I love his style. Its old school and effective. The NFL is trying to make changes just because of the concussion law suites that they’re going through, but what they don’t realize is that the new rule of where you can hit is causing a lot more knee injuries this year. Friends, those are serious career ending injuries when they hit the knees. I think the league has made a serious mistake, and you can see that with large amount of injuries that have already happen.
I say clean up the location of the tackles, but don’t change a thing about the aggressive hitting nature of this team. Trust me all the other teams are now worried about playing the Bucs, especially with them seeing how we manhandled the Saints and kept them at 16 pts.
Even though we are 0-2 I feel good about where we’re going. We’ve played 2 tough games that we were in position to win. They will clean up some of the stupid mistakes and be a team to deal with.
I’m not scared of the Pats. They are struggling, and have many injuries. I think we will take that game and it will be the start of the climb to the top. The Giants went 0-2 and went on to win the Superbowl.
Joe, sorry man , but you are just as guilty as the rest of the media empowering the useless speculations to boost your patronage. As fans we need to stop listening to the crap and support our team every week. Forget this soap opera that is manufactured by the meadia and disjointed fans.

So where was this information about Goldson having the most penalties of anyone in the NFL when all you Sports Experts were reporting what a great deal he was being added to the team? And who do you think has been prompting them to go ahead and “hit away” to show toughness? Could it be Mr. “hit ’em when they’re trying to take a knee” Scheeanooh? Why the hell is he not getting skewered by the press for his coaching faults? Who isn’t seeing that the players even know how to line up, or hit legally, or get proper substitutions in on time? And his absolutely BS practice of going soft and conservative when the game is on the line instead of playing the same smart football that got them to within 3 yards of the first down that would have won the game? I am sorry, I supported him all along but it is clear now he is a bull-headed bungler! Instead of learning what it takes to win, he constantly butts his head against the rules and then is mad when he can’t change them and they lose. He is small time, and tunnel visioned. He is the reason we are losing. He is the reason Josh Freeman seems to walk on glass. He is a control freak that is trying to force his will on the team instead of finding what will work best organically for his talent and then being creative and flexible at game time to maximize their potential. I am disgusted by this coach and his staff.

As much as I hate the new and unimproved NFL rules, we do have to live with them. I do think that if the NFL is going to be so flag happy about hits to the head I think they should treat it like facemask penalties. If it is an intentional hit to the head of an opposing player or use of the head as a weapon by the defender it should, by all means be a personal foul drawing 15 yards. But if it is an incidental hit to the head then hit them with a 5 yard penalty. If it keeps going this way where the refs throw a flag every time a defender breathes on a ball carrier wrong, we might as well start embracing soccer as the new American pastime.

@BuccoBill – there is no 5 yard facemask penalty anymore. The whole point was to take subjectivity out of the game. Our team is clearly being targeted and watched for any type of helmet to helmet contact. The players have to change the way they tackle, period.

So now Revis is unhappy with lack of man coverage?? Just what was the problem with the defensive plan yesterday?? Again…where is the quote from Revis and if there is no actual quote then why is this being reported?? I have no problems with the defensive schemes right now. We played lights out defense against the Saints. Revis can have a problem with the defense when the scheme doesn’t work but that was not the case yesterday. I just can’t imagine him saying something like that after a defensive performance like yesterday. Something just isn’t right there.

I want to know when the league is going to start fining and suspending the offensive players for their part in the head to head contact.
When they lower their heads to draw the contact on what would have otherwise been a perfectly legal tackle they not the defender are to blame.
It’s a little unfair to put the whole thing on the defenders.

Exactly Greig, glad someone else noticed that. That play yesterday, had the player not fell and dropped his head, Goldson would have hit him right in the chest. How can anyone expect Goldson, who is coming in at about 100 MPH, to be able to adjust his target? It’s not possible, which shows how flawed the rule is.

Revis wanted to be on Colston on the final drive. He makes $1 million a game, let him earn his money. Situations such as those are why you acquired him.
