Criticism Will Make Freeman “Better”

September 13th, 2013

One Buccaneer theorizes that Josh Freeman will emerge from the endless scrutiny of his play, and Photogate, as a better quarterback.

Mike Williams always has Freeman’s back, and yesterday was no exception. Williams told The Tampa Tribune that media and fan darts and spears tossed at Freeman will make No. 5 stronger.

“People don’t know what they’re talking about,’’ Williams said, referring to Freeman’s skeptics. “That’s my quarterback and he’s going to be my quarterback as long as I’m here. Sometimes, people look at things and think it’s one person’s fault, but it’s a lot of things. I’m going to let them keep on criticizing Josh. I think it’s only going to make him better.’’

So there you have it. Pile on Josh. You’ll be doing him a favor.

Joe (seriously) believes Freeman insulates himself very well from the media madness. He’s always been that way, though that doesn’t mean Freeman isn’t aware of what’s said and written about him – and the boos that rained down on him during home games last season.

Freeman largely ignoring criticism comes in large part from Raheem Morris, who was very vocal about instructing his players not to read a word of the newspapers and more. Freeman seems to have taken that message to heart.

The only persons likely to be immune from criticism are those who rarely are criticized…That would be players like Revis & Jackson

  2. Raphael Says:

    Thank you Mike Williams ….
Finally a voice of reason Mike , but you could of said how stupid the detractors are …. Oh wait ..you did . SNAP ! Lol

True. When you’re “sleeping” all the time, it’s hard to get caught up in the media madness.

Schiano has always had issues with qb’s since rutgers, i dont remember any qb getting drafted out of rutgers ever so as a defensive minded coach how would he know because he’s not a proven winner at any level. who could win games with that boring offense they run, it doesnt take alot of game planning for this generic high school offense. if you have the lead with 35 seconds in a game the lost isnt on the qb, he’s not calling his own plays because if he want we would have went for the throat. schiano lost against every ROOKIE quarterback we’ve faced since he’s been here and whats sad is it was in the last seconds when he disappeared so he can deflect blame. No one can tell me they seee him outcoaching anyone in the nfl. schiano, freeman and dominick should go if they fail to win with this talent

  5. bucrightoff Says:

The comments in the linked article seem to mimic this website very well. People are growing tired of Freeman. For his own sake he had better put together two great performances the next two weeks, because if it gets to 0-3 the fans will be demanding change.

  6. Raphael Says:

Bucrightoff. I am sure freeman is getting tired of the clueless detractors as well …

  8. buc4lyfe Says:

we are still saying freeman’s name, i watched patriots play this same team and TOM BRADY was like 19-33 and 200+ yards. now why is it they won and we didnt and freeman is sitting on the bench with a lead. freeman could play lights out this weekend and we still lose because schiano is a very good gameday coach FACT. NO one has praised him for a well coached game not once. Dominick cant keep giving us these rookie head coaches in what some call the toughest division in the league because he cant coach, freeman is inaccurate but he’s worse ever since this guy got here.

you play a tight end on every single play of a game even though he’s not a factor not one single target to stocker, they cut the only healthy fullback we had and put a running back out there on sunday. man thats just stupid and so is this offense because its to predictable to be successful no matter who is back there. freeman might not be good enough for tampa fans but he’s the best on the roster so honestly who do you want to blame for that? i guess it’s freeman’s fault he’s still here and they didnt bring in any talent even though his last press conference last year he talked about how he would create competition and the qb spot…is anyone worried about glennon taking freeman’s job because im sure he’s not

  9. buc4lyfe Says:

it’s kinda stupid to blame freeman’s winning record on freeman. raheem morris…whatever anyway schiano was average at best at the college level but atleast he knew how to make halftime adjustments which is why freeman has so many comeback victories but all of his comebacks were sabotaged by the coach last year….he sucks and if freeman isnt his guy why is this coward scared to make a change…its because we found out that if he’s fired the glazers get to pay him the remainder of his money over a span of 5 years and he’s scared already

  10. bucrightoff Says:

And if Freeman continues his last 4 game average (which would be 250 yards, a TD and 3 turnovers on 53% completions), you’ll still be defending him Raphael. I admire your commitment to Freeman, even as its kind of bizarre to care more about a player than the success of the team. I honestly don’t care who leads the Bucs. Freeman has been mediocre at best since 2010 (and the NFLs INT leader as well). To deny that is to deny what fact tells you.

  11. Sharon Says:

Watch the game. Free is a shell of himself on the sidelines. No leader left in him.

  12. Nick2 Says:

Wow this quote from Williams reminds me of Terrell Owens in tears when the lynch mob was done with Tony Romo dating Jessica Simpson— “Thats my quarterback man!! Thats my quarterback!!” See it really does not matter what Mike Williams thinks and I do like Mike Williams. Freeman has done so much irresponsible harm that nothing Mike Williams says really makes a difference. I do agree with everyone else that if Freeman starts to play great football he can make all of this garbage go away but last years implosion makes me think that will never happen. I hope I am wrong.

  13. lightningbuc Says:

Does anyone know what buclyfe said?

  14. Nick2 Says:

Raphael I wish we were all clueless but unfortunately that is the one word I would give our Quarterback now clueless…. We are the ones seeing the immature behavior and shaking our heads.

  15. Big Rob Says:

Mark Sanchez is the INT leader.

  16. buc4lyfe Says:

shows how ignorant you are lightningbuc…

lovie smith, tony dungy got fired for not getting to a superbowl and deep in the playoffs, no one was blaming the jay cutler or shaun king or whoever the qb was. stupid dude to place all the blame on freeman for that game as if the rest of the team was in sync, guess its the coaches job to do nothing but have press conferences. you guys are pathetic because there are 10 other positions on the field….what about third down drops that would have extended drives. everyone else with sense blames the coach for the team not being ready angry at the coach for not giving starters more time during the preseason and after the game you play freeman for use LOSING THE GAME ON A FIELD GOAL…meaning we were up when defense got on the field

  17. Couch Fan Says:

It’s ok Mike. You will forget all about Freeman once we get a competent QB for you to work with.

  18. buc4lyfe Says:

    lightningbuc

you have to be able to read to understand whats going on but its ok atleast your trying

  19. Couch Fan Says:

and the boos that rained down on him during home games last season.

    ———————-

That was just a small sample compared to what is about to happen if he keeps up this same crappy play.

  20. buc4lyfe Says:

lol wow there’s gotta be alot of people who rode the short bus with tinted windows in here. during the preseason everyone was mad at the coach for not playing the players more, for how out of sync they looked, him lying that they were ready as if they could turn it on in game one and when they play just like they did in game 1 you kill the qb and have nothing to say about the coach. im at a loss, im not saying freeman played great but seriously he isnt the issue. get rid of freeman for WHO, bench him for WHAT. you think we looked like were in the clowny sweepstakes because of 1 out of 22 players?

  21. Andrew 1 Says:

I wonder if we are going to see any of Jeff Demps. he could really help Freeman in the short passing if we throw him the ball because he can turn short gains into long ones with his speed.

  22. buc4lyfe Says:

my god ok so freeman is the one that decided AGAIN to run the ball 3 times and punt. if he doesnt trust freeman to seal the game then why is he in there. If freeman is the same qb as last year, schiano is the same coach who let nick foles and rg3 beat us in last second drives. if you want to beat the bucs just play a rookie qb.

if freeman gets benched i wont mind but dont sit there and treat freeman like an outcast but tell him to go win the game, it you dont like freeman sit him down or support him, i dont care either way but as a coach get off the fence and make a choice he wanted glennon so if he knows qb’s like he thinks he does stop waiting and let glennon get experience for next year

  23. lightningbuc Says:

    Andrew,

I’m pretty sure Demps isn’t on the active roster. They got some sort of exemption that gives them 2 weeks to try him out to see if they want to keep him. If they do, then obviously they’d need to waive someone off the 53 man roster.

Mark Sanchez is the INT leader.
    _______________________________________________________________

Nope. Coming into this year Freeman and Ryan Fitzpatrick were tied with most INTs the last 2 seasons with 39 a piece. Not sure how many franchise QBs have two season runs where they average 20 picks a season.

  25. Andrew 1 Says:

    @lightningbuc

Damn. well thats disappointing. they need to make room for this guy, he could really help out.

  26. BirdDoggers Says:

Freeman showed talent while playing for Raheem. He was sometimes inconsistent, but he was very young and just developing. He also showed leadership and a desire to get better. He had a positive attitude and took it upon himself to get the team together for practices during the lockout. Then Schiano gets hired and everything seemed to change. His progression seemed to slow if not stop an his attitude changed. It’s up to the coaches to get the most out of their players. It might not be just a coincidence. Regardless if Schiano wants his own guy or not, he had a promising up and coming QB already on the roster.

  27. DWC2 Says:

If Criticism Will Make Freeman “Better”
Then someone needs to let him read all these buc fan posts, we will have the best Quarter Back in football

  28. The_Buc_Realist Says:

    @BirdDoggers

you left out the 2011 season. also during the 2010 season there were times that the offense did nothing until the second half, and the team still finished in 3rd place of the division.

  29. Couch Fan Says:

The 2010 season is just like any other Freeman season. he sucked first 3 Qts. then finally decided to do something late in the game. Only difference is that schedule was so weak that he actually was able to have a few comebacks against a lot of bad teams….

  30. ATLBucsFan Says:

@ buc4lyfe. I see your point but Schiano has to consider the team. Whether he trusts Freeman in every situation or not, Freeman is still his better option for a qb on the field. We can argue that he’s not using Freeman’s strengths in every situation or he has a bad game plan or calls conservative plays when you and I would rather they play to Freeman’s strengths but I don’t think he has other immediate options over playing Freeman. For me, at this point in the season, sitting Freeman is not his better option. Only when the season is lost can he change directions @ qb.

  31. buc4lyfe Says:

oh my god there we go with the last two years crap…stop watching so much espn dude why not compare int’s over the entire career, they dont do it because freeman had that year when he had the best td to int ration in the entire league and we can criticize him now but wont give him any props, if you can do that once you can do it again people if you have a coach that knows what he’s doing

he talked about not pigeonhole theory with his linebackers and that they can play any position but you pigeonhole your quarterback knowing he is a running qb, every qb has to be a running qb at some point in a game lol he’ s basically saying dont run like you used to take the sack. if freeman is so slow at reading coverages why would you tell him not to run

  32. buc4lyfe Says:

    andy reid-michael vick
    chip kelly- michael vick

see how it works when the offense fits the qb? thats the way it works not the other way around…this isnt greg schiano’s offense its mike sullivan so why would he be telling mike sullivan or freeman anything about quarterbacking? he got beat down last week because he left his pen and pad at home because he didnt respect the jets and thought it would be an easy win why else would you think you could rest starters until gameday

  33. Free's A Boob Says:

Of course he doesn’t read the papers. No pictographs.

  34. Stanglassman Says:

Freeman has ignored what people say and write his whole football career good or bad it has nothing to do with Raheem. I watched game one 3 times now and when you break it down Freeman didn’t have that bad of a game. The offense as a whole looked out of sinc to borrow a well wore phase from Dungy. The O-line needs to have a better play going forward for this offense to function properly and that’s just a simple fact. I can see why Schiano would want to blame Freeman for his poor performance as a game day coach to buy some more time but it seems a little soon to give up on this season. Without Freeman this team has no chance to win more than a couple of games this year. I just hope that’s not the plan.

  35. Miguel Grande Says:

LightningBuc said,”Does anyone know what buc4lyfe said?” LOL!!

If Freeman were to pick up a newspaper, he might be the only person in Tampa Bay under 70 years of age to do so.

Modern media is different, he can’t hide. He’s got a call in radio show. He has to sit on the Buc’s bench. He has a smart phone and Twitter.

Buc4lyfe did say and I took the liberty to correct the spelling, “We are still saying Freeman’s name, I watched the Patriots play this same team and TOM BRADY was like 19-33 and 200+ yards.”

If Brady had VJax and MWill, he would have completed 20-23 for 500 yards.

Take away #83 and Free would have 50 something yards. Geno outplayed Gosh and he had to deal with Revis Island.

I wish they had traded Josh Freeman when he could have gotten them a 1st round pick or maybe Ryan Mallett. Now he has absolutely no trade value. They would have to pay somebody $7 million to take him.

If they put him on waivers, nobody would even claim him. This debacle could spell the end of the Mark Dominick era.

  36. Stevene Says:

Stanglassman::: You have way to much free time on your hands

  37. buc4lyfe Says:

DAMN COUCH FAN YOU ARE A TURDBURGLER

HE HAD 20 TOUCHDOWN AND 6 INT’S IN 2010 AND IN THE YEARS BEFORE IT WAS ALL ABOUT JOSH FREEMAN, ITS ABOUT FREEMAN THEY SAID THAT FOR YEARS. HE HAD NO WEAPONS THEN HE GETS SOME WEAPONS AND ALL OF A SUDDEN HE’S THE PROBLEM.

YOU SOUND LIKE SOME KIND OF RACIST HATING THE BEST QB ON THE ROSTER OF WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE TEAM YOU LOVE……GO ROOT FOR JACKSONVILLE JAGS YOU…..FREAKING FOOL GOT PERFECTLY GOOD ORGANS THAT PEOPLE WITH COMMON SENSE NEED MORE THAN YOU. YOU DONT NEED YOUR EYES BECAUSE YOU DONT USE THEM

  38. buc4lyfe Says:

take away #83 lol what a simple minded dude….he just got vjack and the dude had the best statistical year of his career, mike williams almost had 1000 yards so vjack made it to the probowl but it had nothing to do with josh freeman lol dude your so slow…thats Fantasy football you talking when saying if tom brady had our weapons, brady doesnt need our weapons to be brady, he’s a hall of famer and in case you havent noticed theres only about 3-4 qb’s at this point in time. the rest of the top qb’s are to young in their careers to say that. dude is still 25.

  39. buc4lyfe Says:

WHAT KIND OF STUPID HEAD COACH SCHEDULES A DAMN TEAM PHOTO BEFORE AT 7AM ON LABOR DAY…I BET THAT WASNT THE CASE LAST YEAR, EVEN IF I SAID I HATED FREEMAN YOU WOULDNT EVEN SEE THIS GUY IS SABOTAGING OUR TEAM. IF FREEMAN IS ALL YOU GOT THEN HELP HIM WIN

  40. SteveK Says:

    buc4lyfe,

Quit day drinking with Gosh Freeman, and stop your disgusting and horrific hate on others.

It is just opinions, change your manpon. You’re attitude is experiencing toxic shock.

  41. rdbucfan Says:

    Buc4lyfe.

How is Josh Freeman a franchise QB?

Because he’s not a proven winner at any level. 1 decent year playing with the easiest schedule in the league does not a franchise QB make. 1 horrific year in 2011 where he had a tough schedule. An average year 2012 where the schedule was not as hard as the year before and some of you want to elect him to the HOF. The way the NFL has changed the rules to make it harder on defenses to defend the pass has made 4000 yards passing average.

How many 5000 yard passers were there last year?

More than 1 5000 yard passer never happened before last year even when air Corrielle was around that was unheard of.

Josh has had 2 seasons in his career (including college) with TD to INT ratio of 2010 and has never been a winner. 1 good year in college and 1 good year in the NFL are the exception and not the norm when talking about Josh Freeman. Freeman’s TD to INT ratio is a almost identical to that of his days in the NFL as it was in college. I guess the reason Josh sucked in college because it was his coaches fault, it can’t be that Josh is an average QB at best.

I guess you should pull out the race card on me also. Because I don’t want my favorite team giving 10 to 20 million a year to a QB that can’t read a defense, is inaccurate, can’t make a quick decision, thinks it’s ok to miss his own QB camp, late for meetings, miss team photo and stares down his WR’s. The QB is the leader of the offense, whether you’re voted team captain or not.

    Dan Marino:
    85-86 = 44 INT
    88-89 = 45 INT

    Current:
    Drew Brees:
    07-08 = 35 INT

    Peyton Manning:
    98-99 = 43 INT

    09-10 = 33 INT

    Eli Manning:
    06-07 = 38 INT

Just to name a few STARTING QBs! It took all of 5 minutes. Your argument is invalid. Get the fuck out! That is all.
