Communication Breakdown

Aside from Lavonte David’s game-losing penalty, an outcome that SiriusXM’s Adam Schein referred to Monday as “The dumbest play of all dumb plays,” Joe was simply aghast at the Bucs communication breakdowns during the first series. That resulted in a timeout and two delay of game penalties, on three consecutive plays, that killed the drive.
Monday, Bucs guard Davin Joseph stated the communication issues were due to crowd noise. This simply floored Joe. The Bucs practice calling plays with pumped in crowd noise and blaring music daily, sometimes up to 30 minutes of practice.
This has taken place since the first practice of training camp back in July. How exactly a team that spends so much time practicing for just such a circumstance can blow up mentally at the first occurrence of trouble absolutely blows Joe’s mind.
Thus, Joe tried to find answers Wednesday.
“There is a plan in place,” Bucs offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan said of what happens when headsets go out during games or the crowd amps up its racket. Sullivan said in such cases various people are to signal to Bucs franchise quarterback Josh Freeman whether to call a run or a pass. “We have to continue to reinforce that so we don’t continue to have those mishaps at the beginning of the game.
“There’s a lot [of ares] to point a finger. It’s disappointing we didn’t execute the way we are capable of… we didn’t coach the way we are capable of. A lot of time is spent [preparing for crowd noise]. We just have to continue to work on those things to make sure they don’t happen again.”
Joe also spoke with Joseph, who believes the communication meltdown was just first-game jitters and something the Bucs will consistently improve on as the season grows old.
“It is not an easy situation,” Joseph said of the communication issues Sunday. “Just like third downs. Hard to win in this league. Takes a little more focus and takes time and we will get better at is as the season progresses. We have to get better.”

At least Sullivan took some accountability for the mistake, something Schiano has yet to do. I can respect that, as I’m sure the players do. He better hope Schiano doesn’t get upset, because Schiano wouldn’t tell the media what the “protocol” was in that situation, but Sullivan let the cat out of the bag. Oh no, our secrets have been exposed to the masses!!!!!!

I can’t believe we’re 4 days into the season and this team is already a total mess. Call it overreacting all you want, I don’t see any other teams having players only meetings this early. I don’t think Freeman, Schiano or Dominik will be here this time next year.

@rbellbuc Schiano does have some say. He may not say what play he wants called but if he wants to take a shot down the field or WANTS TO RUN THE BALL ON A CRUICIAL 3 and 3!( sorry still mad about that) he can do that, but the actual playcalling is all Sully

good teams have good to great players at EVERY position that hold other players accountable. these guys have been playing football their whole life at this level. there is no such thing as a good team with bad players or a bad team with good players. the bucs will be a good team when they get good players at EVERY position. Of course there is an exception to this rule when the QB is Brady, P Manning or Brees

I think by the time they realized That Freeman was having problems there wasn’t much time left on the clock, so Freeman called a timeout. He then went to the sideline and handed the helmet to the equipment mngr. and he kind of banged on it a few times and said it was working. Freeman went backout onto the field with the same helmet and as he was getting the call again the helmet failed again and they try to signal the call in but theyb ran out of time and got a delay penalty. Then Freeman went back to the sideline and was exchanging his helmet for a different while the clock was running down. Coach Schiano should have just called a time out but elected not too and it resulted in another delay. By then it was already 3rd and forever. JMO purely speculative.

As for this players only meeting regarding the legitimacy of the captain vote: W-O-W!!!. If the players somehow find out the votes were manipulated by Schiano, it is OVER. He is done, as he should be. They will never trust him or believe in him again. This would be the only reason I would ever be in favor of firing him in-season. If this is found to be true, I want him fired today. He doesn’t deserve to be the coach.

Communications breakdown? I guess so. John Lynch, or another pundit, called that the worst opening series in NFL history. A massive breakdown – should have been handled better. If something similar happens next Sunday, what will be the excuse this time. Just another breakdown? Coaching has to get much better, much faster. No excuses.

I agree with you on that one. if he did in fact rig the player votes so that Freeman would not be captain, then his ass needs to be gone now. BUT I find it hard to believe that anyone would be stupid enough to take that kind of risk and jeopardize the trust of there own players. I also find it hard to believe that anyone would be able to know exactly what was said in a PLAYERS ONLY MEETING. I have a feeling this is some more media bull sh!t.

If it turns out to be not true,
That reporter or blogger who insinuated that, and then delivered as a probable truth should be tarred and feathered, then fired from his job. The Profootbaltalk should have to write a formal letter of apology to Coach Schiano and the Bucs org. If it is credible and turns out to be true, then whatever punishment the Bucs decide, I will be behind 100%.

i too must admit that if true, Schiano must go. There’s already rumblings that players aren’t buying what Schiano is selling. Considering the sources, I didn’t take much stock in it. If, however, this is true than Schiano will never be able to command a locker room or regain trust.

You’re starting to sound like Duemig, calling David’s penalty the “game loser”. That play was no more a “game loser than was Freeman’s INT or Jackson’ being caught from behind after his reception. It should NEVER have come down to only having a 2 point lead against a weak time like the Jets

I really, really doubt he would fix the vote. Davin and VJax are two highly respected vets, and while Freeman may be liked, I’m guessing he doesn’t carry the respect the other two do. But yes Schiano would be almost assuredly gone if he did.
The only positive I see is we’re such a mess we’re starting to look like a doppleganger for the 49ers pre-Harbaugh. Hopefully we can find our Kaepernick/Harbaugh like they did and turn this thing around.

A players only meeting usually means the team wants to correct BIGTIME issues. It usually doesnt happen week 1, so the media probably speculated it was over some scandal. Seems that they are obsessing over this Freeman not captain thing.
I look at this meeting as a good thing….the players care and know last sundays performance is NOT acceptable.
A scandal was my last thought and dont believe its the reason! Damn media…sorry Joe!

I was just reading the comments on profootballtalk. Make no mistake, we are the laughing stock of the NFL right now. As well we should be. That said, its freaking Week 1 and these things have a way of policing themselves. The players only meeting is on a whole new level though. This is extremely concerning and I am taking that very seriously.

I just read it. They covered their azzes by saying one league source. I’m really getting tired of all this sniper reporting. I still say a lot of the media still have it out for Schiano after they were proved wrong about the legitimacy of Schiano’s crashing the victory formation. They were all up in arms, including Mike Florio.

I know everyone is going to kill me for saying this, but I would go Sullivan. He’s been a head coaching candidate, and he actually had a good amount of success last year. I happen to believe he is being micromanaged by Schiano, but that is just my opinion. You certainly can’t bring in an outsider in midseason, and I really don’t see anyone else on the coaching staff more deserving of a shot than Sullivan (who will probably be gone to be a HC next year anyway if he has a successful year this year).

There is just way too much smoke for me to believe there isn’t any truth in this. There have been multiple reports that the players aren’t buying into Schiano by both local and national media. I know these are unnamed sources, but believe it or not, there have been times where unnamed sources ended up being accurate. I hope it’s not true and I hope the players love Schiano, but I don’t know.

The problem we had on Sunday is bigger than just one person. It’s not just Freeman, it’s not just Schiano. However, if (key word, “if”) Schiano is undermining the very principles he teaches (trust, belief, accountability) all within a couple days, then it’s over for him in Tampa.

Read the article on Pewter Report a few days ago. He mentions how the players don’t “love” Schiano. Read the article and draw your own conclusions, but I don’t think it looks good.

Some caller, “Paul”, was attempting to mention that after 5 years Freeman is yet to show us, the fans,….” And then, Doomigg took over argued between a “bad throw” vs “ill advised” throw terminology and ending the call.

Doesn’t matter whether there was tampering at the ballot box, if the players even think it’s enough of a possibility to have a meeting about it, Schiano has already gotten a no confidence vote. No matter what happens, this is a major distraction for the administration. Here’s a clue. See if Mark Dominik goes into a witness protection program as he did during the last days of Morris. If he can’t be found, then Schiano is a dead man walking.

Whenever a team says “we have to continue to work on…” it means it’s broken. You have the players and scheme or you don’t, nothing more. “We have to continue to work on stopping the run…” means your team is not stopping the run anytime soon.

Maybe JFro, upon learning he wasn’t voted captain, called the players meeting to see if that was really the case. And the players reaffirmed to him, that yes, they had voted VJax and Joseph captain, not him. Which would also explain why he melted down in the 1st quarter, knowing his team no longer believes in him.

Josh and his offensive unit which he leads LOST the team 2 points on the safety. He melted down when his helmet malfunctioned. He melted down taking multiple delay of game penalties. When the referee calls delay of games, they call it on the QB. Why? Because it is the QBs responsibility to get the play off in time, especially when coming out of a timeout. Not sure why Schiano is to blame for all that. Freeman was the one on the field – not Schiano. Maybe JFro needs to spend more time preparing for the game, less time drinking, which has been reported by two well respected former NFL QBs.

I doubt our chances of taking one at the Pats. In fact, I think Belichick will flex his muscles and put a whooping on us.

Lets be real too, this week is to avoid 0-3. New England and Belichick will have 10 days to prepare for the Bucs because they play tomorrow. A Belichick team with 10 days against a QB whose confidence level has to be hovering somewhere around 0. If the Bucs lose Sunday and win in New England it would be one of the most remarkable wins in franchise history. Almost enough to remove the stain of the Jets loss….almost.

Funny that two well respected NFL QBs – Esiason and Moon – go on the record to discuss JFro’s lack of preparation and study, which was on display this past Sunday, and they are dismissed at not knowing anything, vengeful, etc. Yet Mike Florio and his NFL paparazzi report on some anonymous source and everybody is already talking about “interim” coaches.

first of all, its Bull sh!t, I truly believe that. for all we know the players only meeting could have been met to discussed certain problems we faced during the jets, such as a lack of cohesiveness and/or the lack of discipline we displayed. the media sees a players only meeting as something negative and will spin it into the worst possible assumption
second of all if this is true, do you really believe the players would bust there asses to try and get a win for Schiano vs the saints? does anyone believe that? I dont. so yes, a win vs the saints will cool this thing off significantly.

What I’m trying to get at is this. Instead of putting together these long drawn out paragraphs about your hatred for this and that about the Bucs. Why not just make 1 clean short sentence of, I hate my team? It’s that simple. Just say I hate my team and get it over with.

Yes, I was looking back at 2010 highlights to try to find some love for Freeman. I stumbled upon Michael Irvin calling the “Baby Bucs” the potential next set of “triplets”: LGB, JF5 and MW19…
I would love to be on here thinking about having my team having just gotten the “w” at the end of the day because that is what is all about.
I can give a sh!t less about Freeman’s stats not being up there better, but can he win? Yes, he led us down the field and put us ahead, but why did we settle for a FG, was that on Schiano?
IMO, Josh should be able to control his destiny. Why didn’t he jump at the opportunity to call plays, rather than relying on the broken mic? Opening game, juices flowing, headset out, take advantage of the ability to audible and dial up some offense. This year is all about JF5 earning his pay day and proving his abilities to the Bucs. I also heard Freeman’s radio show response about not being a captain. Freeman really is first class, and communicates well verbally. However, Joe mentioned that he seemed to not be a “competitor” with his response of, “Davin and Vincent are two great leaders.”.
When is JF5 going to seize the moment? Is JF5 able to control his own destiny? Does Schiano have too much reign on these guys?

Just because they beat the Saints doesn’t mean they are doing it for Schiano. Maybe they would bust their butts because they want to win the game. You don’t think that a team has ever beaten another team, while still giving up on the coach? That’s ridiculous. If players think they have been lied to by a coach, they aren’t going to trust him – ever. It’s human nature. That doesn’t mean they will quit, but it does call on their professionalism. I guarantee you the Jacksons, McCoys, Martins, etc. won’t quit. However, there’s a lot of guys on a team, and they aren’t all those type of people. Winning doesn’t always cure everything. Do I really need to start naming specific examples?

If these players don’t try 150% with the money their getting paid regardless of their coach they can get the fuk off the team because as far as I’m concerned they have no integrity and are worth very little. Lets hope that’s not the case and they indeed haven’t given up on their coach. That’s pitiful to even think during week 1 of the season.
