“Not Prepared For A Full-Speed Football Game”

September 9th, 2013

“But I thought you’d yell at me if I called my own play.”

On the Bucs’ opening drive, Tampa Bay was flagged for consecutive delay of game penalties following a timeout. Joe was in stunned disbelief.

But then Josh Freeman was sacked and the Bucs were flagged for consecutive false start penalties before punting. Also unthinkable.

Former Bucs guard Ian Beckles went wild this morning on Freeman for the delay of game calls. “Put your head in the huddle and call a play,” Beckles said on the Ron and Ian show on WDAE-AM 620.

Beckles continued: “I’m putting it on Greg Schiano. They were not ready to play football. … They were not prepared for a full-speed football game.”

How could one argue with Beckles’ points? It can’t be done.

Yes, Lavonte David Sabbied the game away, but it was bad football like the exchange above that cost the Bucs repeatedly.

The New Schiano Order was not ready. And they’re all about readiness. Joe can’t help but be very concerned. This is the NFLs biggest coaching and advisory staff with established veteran players throughout the offense.

    I agree … 100%

  2. Celly Says:

I always find it convenient that its only the visiting teams’ headsets that malfunction during games.

  3. rhenry Says:

Can someone explain to me how we gave up a safety? I was still throwing up in the bathroom after the first drive.

  4. Scotty in Fat Antonio Says:

WOW….the NSO is taking quite the beating across the local media AND internet pages this morning. I am wondering how breakfast is sitting with the Dom and the Glazers this morning? The NSO is about to become like the NWO….defunct.

As the Chicago White Sox broadcaster the “Hawk” says…..HE GONE!!!!

  5. ShutTheBucUp Says:

Its week one. Most of the embarrassing moments in the game are correctable by the next game. It sucks losing to the team the media regards as the biggest mess in the NFL, but I think we’ll overcome it. Too many good leaders on the team for there to be any sort of internal meltdown.

  6. lightningbuc Says:

    rhenry,

    That made me laugh!

  7. Splengo Says:

Lavonte David may have Sabbied the game away, but had the college coaches made him aware of the NFL rules regarding a player that is clearly run ing out of bounds regardless of whether he is inbounds or out when he is hit? PFT sheds light on the rule that I doubt Lavonte was aware of.

  8. Bucnjim Says:

The only good thing to come from Sunday is my weight loss. I’m going to be sick to my stomach for probably the next three or four weeks.

  9. lightningbuc Says:

Yes, that whole debacle is on Schiano. He brought 9-volt batteries, and the headsets take “AA”‘s.

Good god, you take away Freeman’s pacifier, er I mean headset, and the dude goes all tapioca.

How do you get a delay of game after a timeout? I guess Schiano kept JFro on the sideline too long.

  10. Mean D Says:

Of course Raphael agrees. It can never be Freeman’s fault. Raphael is carrying Freeman’s baby.

  11. SteveK Says:

At what point is our starting QB, in his 57th start, expected to know what the hell he is doing.

This is frigging ridiculous, no excuses.

Get on the same page, everyone.

Dominick, your old TE and GM asst. took your ass to school yesterday, good job at finding a way to suck every damn year.

Schiano, Let’s go bro, it’s ok to practice executing in the preseason so you can build your team’s confidence Quit trying to hide your hand and open up about the BS going on.

It should not have come down to LVD making a mistake. It is a shame that we, Freeman, couldn’t score more points.

What gives? Geno Smith, in his NFL debut, outplayed Josh Freeman in his 57th start.

  12. Eric Says:

When your used to competing for third place in the Big East the NFL can be a little confusing. Having plays lined up and stuff.

  13. You Go Joe Says:

This really is not the first time that we experience a broken headset, however this goes to show A.) how strict Sullivan/Schiano are with Josh play callings, B.) Josh is incapable of play callings.

I’m starting to think our system is holding Free back to his potential. Our system is being forced to Freeman and that really makes him uncomfortable. That drive clearly shows that Free has 0 saying in play calling, and how is he supposed to work with coaches that keep calling running plays down the middle and other questionable play calling.

  14. BucsfaninChina Says:

Hypothetical Question: Teddy Bridgewater or Jadaveon Clowney?

As much as our pass rush is horrendous, I believe our team has lost faith in its QB. Inknow i have, and we aint going anywhere without a competent QB

  15. lightningbuc Says:

    YouGoJoe,

Yeah, Free really showed his potential in 2011 when Schiano wasn’t his coach.

  16. BucsfaninChina Says:

Uh, what have you seen to show why Josh SHOULD have any say in playcalling? I see a scared little boy out there who cant tie his own shoes without fear of upsetting somebody.

  17. Bucnjim Says:

I’m not going to go into who’s fault it was because besides Vincent Jackson the other 21 or so starters played like crap. I’m a Freeman supporter, but he was BAD yesterday. The most disappointing thing about this game was the fact that they practiced ALL SUMMER in the heat & rain and this is the best you can come up with? I watched high school games Friday night that were more organized than the Bucs. There was NO attention to detail! You’d think after the headset problem in preseason there would be a plan in place….Guess not!

  18. Mark Sanchez's Hairband Says:

    Nice caption!!!

  19. Adam L. Says:

@BucsFanInChina No more drafted QBs… this offense is built to win NOW. A veteran should be creaming his jock to come here and play with these weapons. With Freeman, the Bucs are Mercedes with water in the gas tank.

  20. Rahb Says:

A QB not forced to walk on eggshells, would have just called plays himself forcing the sideline to call a timeout signifying distrust in the QB. WHAT HAPPENED TO HAND SIGNALS?

This falls directly into the Schiano Regimes Wheelhouse!
    1. An Unprepared Football team {Preseason was not a Mirage}
    2. An Undisciplined Football Team

KUDOS: To Goldson for BRINGING THE PAIN!

  21. SteveK Says:

    BucsfanfromChina,

In the even the Bucs run the table, presason included, and lose their way to the 1st pick, I’d say trade back to #2 and take whoever is left from Clowney or Bridgewater.

Clowney is a freak, but Bridgewater is looking like a QB.

  22. John Ensch Says:

I’ve been saying this for a long time now, not ready for prime time Schiano is the real problem for the Bucs. No team can look this bad unless they are poorly coached. I saw it in preseason when they constantly showed no improvement from game to game. Everyone says well it’s only preseason, well preseason games are nothing more than an extended practice and if you don’t look good in practice, then you won’t look good in games. I see us being 0-3 and licking the boots of all the NFC South.

  23. Architek Says:

    @Raphael,
The time is about to come when your intentions here will be revealed. Are you a Bucs fan or Josh Freeman – on a bad team there are many truths but one thing is for sure; it shows the real fans.

This loss again is a culmination of the laid back approach of the preseason. Doesn’t get easier with the Saints coming and the Pats. 0-3 or 0-4 almost guarantees a qb change.

  24. bucrightoff Says:

Can we please all accept he 2010 Freeman season was an anamoly? Derek Anderson had a great season once too. So did Scott Mitchell.

  25. Oldguy Says:

Can’t disagree. The most troubling coaching decision, to me, was repeatedly (12 times?) running Martin into the line (same play) and stopped every time. Where is the logic in such play calling?

  26. SteveK Says:

What is going on with Freeman, everyone moved on the safety fumble?

Burnt a time out, and then is still penalized with delay of game?

Freeman has had 57 starts, Joe, call it out. Geno outfoxed our regressing veteran QB.

  27. Raphael Says:

Architect , Josh freeman gave us the lead with 40 seconds left …. You cannot deny there is no way the defense should let them win !

This loss is 100 % on the defense and Lvd .

Why aren’t you guys on Lvd ???

  28. Couch Fan Says:

Its rather obvious that Freeman will never take any blame by the Freemanites. No matter how bad or obvious it is. The Defense was FAR better than I expected and I think most. 250 pass yards and 90 rush yards allowed. 5 sacks 1 Int., 2 fumbles recovered 16 points allowed. Yea I’ll take that anyday….

For all that talk about the 9th ranked offense… Ppffttt.. Plan and simple if it werent for V-Jax, we would of got blown out by one of the worst, if not worst teams in the league…. Thats embarrissing. I’m almost scared of what NO might do to us. It’s looking a lot like it could be another 41-0 game.

  29. Couch Fan Says:

Architect , Josh freeman gave us the lead with 40 seconds left …. You cannot deny there is no way the defense should let them win !

    ————————————-

What about the other 55 minutes of the game where, you know, he stunk it up to the high heavens? Oh thats right, let’s just let him pass….

Amazing our D played there ass off all game, while Free takes a squat until the last few minutes then finally does something and you are proclaiming he did his job LMAO…

  30. Raphael Says:

Couch ? 40 seconds left and no timeouts .. How can you not hold the defense accountable ? Freeman had some great laser throws and saved 7 points with the safety… Free had a few bad passes , int was a horrible throw. . Ogle tree had 2 drops and mike Williams had a pass bounce off his hands . TRUTH is the OL sucked and the defense lost the game… But go ahead and point the finger at JOSH …. It shows you don’t know football

  31. Couch Fan Says:

IF Free did his job for 60 minutes, we would of had a huge lead in the final drive and that FG would of meant nothing…. The defense blew that final drive yes… but not the game. The game was determined by a pathetic offense lead by a crap QB with horrible Play calling… Defense was fantastic for a majority of this game…. Just Because Free pulled his head out of his butt for a couple minutes at the end doesnt earn him a pass in my book.

  32. bucrightoff Says:

Freeman manufactured one drive over 60 yards, and that was the FG, and that was VJax saving him. 57 starts and we can’t count on 2 TD drives a game from our QB? Why does it matter who wins games for us? Glennon, Freeman, Bridgewater, Boyd, Manziel, the guy working at Dunkin Donuts, Tebow, a CFL QB…I just don’t care who it is. We need someone who gives us the chance to compete every Sunday and win more often than not. After 4 full seasons, Freeman still hasn’t proved it.

  33. bucrightoff Says:

Raphael is like logicalvoicesays on PFT. Except RGIII proved more last year than Freeman ever has. 2010 was a fluke ladies and gentlemen. He has a better supporting cast now and looks even worse. How is that possible?

  34. Couch Fan Says:

250 pass yards and 90 rush yards allowed. 5 sacks 1 Int., 2 fumbles recovered 16 points allowed.

Theres our Defensive stats again since you Freemanites just Love stats. Thats an excellent defensive outting and miles better than anything we had last year. Isn’t that what you’ve and the rest of the Freemanites have been saying all off-season? With a better defense, we would win games? Lol, well… We got a better defense… so now what?

Let’s just be honest for a second. Even if you dont want to blame Freeman. You can’t possibly say it was the defense that let us down… You just can’t. It makes no sense. it was penalty that screwed up that final drive… not the play of the defense… And even if you dont want to admit it, Freeman should of had us a MUCH bigger lead.

  35. BirdDoggers Says:

This loss wasn’t on Freeman , the defense or the unfortunate play by David. This loos is squarely on the shoulders of Schiano and his staff. They had an entire offseason to prepare for the Jets game. They were simply outcoached and fielded an unprepared team. Schiano is touted as a details oriented, disciplined head coach. That wasn’t evident on Sunday. Hopefully he’s not caught up in all the small details, like the temperature of the meeting room, to overlook the big picture. It was a horrible loss, but they still have 15 games to play and the mistakes made on Sunday are fixable.

  36. Patrick Says:

Raphael……..Freeman played like crap for most of the game. What game were you watching yesterday? His played worse than Geno Smith, a guy who was making his first career start! Freeman failed to build on our lead the entire game and is the reason the Jets were still in a position to win the game at the end. He didn’t “drive” us in the end either. He made ONE pass to Vincent Jackson to set us up for a field goal. If Josh was SO good, why didn’t Schiano opt to let him try to pass the ball into the end zone?? He ran Doug Martin 3 straight times cause he knows Freeman sucks.

The defense did its part yesterday, with the exception of Lavonte David’s dumb penalty. I don’t think Freeman played AWFUL, but he wasn’t effective.

  37. lightningbuc Says:

“saved 7 points with the safety”

Raphael has jumped the shark. When he is praising the QB for kicking the ball out of bounds (which he did do better than throwing the ball), it’s comedy time!

BTW, Raphael, he only saved the Bucs 5 points.

  38. 76buc76 Says:

I’m heading to Miguel’s house. I believe and now I am signing up with his cult. The Geno’s. If thing’s go bad on Sunday. You will hear all 20,000 fan’s at the saint’s game chanting….Glennon…Glennon. This is it fellow mobster’s…Freeman’s last stand. Choke Freeman choke the last thing I wan’t is him going on a late season run (by then we’ll be out of the playoff’s) then sign him for 10M per. This guy will make 3M per as a backup next year. All you guy’s were worried (if he win’s the superbowl we’ll have to pay him 20M per) hahaha. Let’s take a look at Glennon now befor the team quit’s. If Freeman stink’s the place out Shiano will bench him. This week possibly at the half. I think Glennon is smart enough to just call a run in that. 1st quarter sequence of peneltys and false start’s. Somehow Goldston get’s away scott free of blame for those stupid hit’s. He should be benched next time. The defence played great. Any one that think’s they didn’t should have there head examened. 16 point’s against, that turnover on the Jet’s 5. So much for that “oh they’ll be so much better 2nd year in sullivan’s offence crap”. The only play that worked was the quick slant. Over and over again. Geno played great and my hat’s off to him. The guy went from a top 10 pick to the second round basically because of rumor’s. When he shocked the world and ran a fast 40. The rumor’s still outweighed his 40. Too bad he didn’t fall another 10 spot’s

  39. Oil Derrick Brooks Says:

Going against a rookie QB, and a rookie CB, TB should have blown them out. They should have had the backups in by the 4th quarter.

  40. passthebuc Says:

    The Bucs

    Not ready for Prime Time.

  41. Cannon Says:

Did Freeman look like a deer in the headlights? Yes.

However, I can’t blame him too much… That OL did him zero favors.

I mean, seriously, every time he’d drop back, defenders were in his face.

  42. bucrightoff Says:

Why are people so willing to give Freeman a pass? The Carolina front 7 yesterday apparently looked terrific, and Russell Wilson went 25-32 for 330 yards. Stop making excuses for Freeman, hes a middle of the road QB, good enough to get us beat a lot. He has 3 games before he loses the entire fanbase except the people who have some bizarre desire to see him and only him be our QB.

  43. SteveK Says:

    Freeman can’t get it done.

  44. Chef Paul Says:

“250 pass yards and 90 rush yards allowed. 5 sacks 1 Int., 2 fumbles recovered 16 points allowed.”

You are right Couch, that is a good stat line. I’ll take it any day. Except against the worst offensive team in the league and a rookie QB and an offensive dumbass head coach.

I’ve said numerous times yesterday and today, that I’m done with Freeman. He’s toast. He’s not the future or the present. So I’m obviously not giving him a pass what so ever. But the defense was not as good as it seems. If Josh had a good game against the worst D in the league would you say he is a great QB now?

  45. Sharkcoasttactical.com Says:

Why didn’t we sign a veteran qb in the offseason? What were they thinking hiring Schiano? Cause he’s friends with bellicheck? 0-4 going into the by. We had John fricken Gruden and winning records. We’re laughing stocks again. A good coaching staff would have gotten a veteran. We have the talent to be a playoff team. Call Gruden up. It’s going to be bad this year. Dammit I’m so sick and tired of football being crap. #occupyonebucplace

  46. Chef Paul Says:

These comments are just plain laughable. There’s too much blame going towards Freeman, yet there’s also not enough blame going towards Freeman, depending on who’s typing. The only thing this TEAM did uniformly was look like a bunch of women out there. They got together and sucked as a team. Singling out one person or even one side of the ball is ridiculous at best.

  47. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

    76Buc76

    Mi casa es su casa!

  48. Chef Paul Says:

If there is one person on this website with his face in Josh’s jock, its SteveK. I know you hate what you smell, but its definitely lodged up there pretty far. Look at the rest of the team man. Your tunnel vision is making you blind to the big picture

  49. Terry Says:

Doug Martin looked like crap. Slow with sloppy hands and indecisive. That was the biggest disappointment.
