The Lessons Of “Sackless” Kyle Moore

August 25th, 2013

Once a upon a time, rockstar general manager Mark Dominik and Raheem Morris gifted the starting left defensive end job to sackless Kyle Moore in 2010. Moore was a second-year pro with no sacks to his name, hence the nickname.

Moore was a liability and never did record a sack with the Bucs before landing in Buffalo in 2011. He revived his career there last season with his first three sacks.

Moore was cut today by the Bears, a team pretty darn deep at his position.

Joe brings up Moore because the Da’Quan Bowers mess always reminds Joe of Moore. Bowers was gifted the starting left end job this season for no logical reason. Double-digit sacks for Bowers was the rallying cry from Greg Schiano. But oft-injured 23-year-olds light on experience should never be anointed starting jobs.

To the New Schiano Order’s credit, it’s obvious the regime refuses to let Bowers become the next Kyle Moore and has stripped Bowers of his starting role.

Newcomer veteran Trevor Scott looks like he could help make up for the loss of Michael Bennett. And the Bucs remain high on the not-too-wild Samoan, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim. Perhaps the Bucs could bring back Moore to compete with Bowers.

He was hurt his first two season, and this season hasn’t even started,

    Bowers is hardly Kyle Moore.

Let’s let his first healthy season play out before we deem him a failure.

  2. FlBoy84 Says:

See 9-Lives Lewis is back on the street again as well.

  3. RBellBuc Says:

I thought your tone in the article was slightly condescending. You act as if you already knew that Bowers would struggle or be a bust. I mean we haven’t even played a regular season game and you’re comparing him to Kyle Moore who was a bust. The jury’s still out on him. Maybe you ought to be the coach, because evidently you know more than him. It’s so easy to judge after the fact.

  4. FlBoy84 Says:

Have to give the Lions credit for only taking 2 weeks to find out what took the Bucs 3 years to. :)

  5. Joe Says:

@RBellBuc – Joe appreciates your comments. Joe had no clue what Bowers would deliver, but Joe also knew Bowers had shown nowhere near enough to be gifted a starting job in the NFL, especially on a team with lots of salary cap room — in a regime that said it craves competition.

To disagree with you, Moore was not necessarily a bust at all. Fourth-round picks like Moore are not expected to be stars or even necessarily starters. The fact he had a solid fourth season in the league tells Joe he wasn’t a bust. Moore, in his Tampa days, was a guy who was not ready for what was put in front of him. That wasn’t all his fault, especially after the regime demanded he fatten up for Jim Bates’ scheme, which was scrapped.

  6. Doc Says:

How about a new G.M. check his record.

  7. Raphael Says:

Bowers just looks slow to me….and fat.. I would’ve concerned about Tuesday 4:00 PM if I were him.

Sry but there is no comparison to Moore , he is terrible

  8. BucsQcCity Says:

Maybe if he spent less time partying with ochocinco on a jet maybe he would had more time to get in shape:

“Models and females wanna party with @ochocinco and myself hit [email protected] send a bio n pic to help host in Columbia SC FEB 22″

Still too early to tell but the trend is down on thia player and that sucks because he’a clearly gifted

  9. ben Says:

Start trevor scott,he has already earned it.

  10. Andrew 1 Says:

even if he doesn’t start, i dont think theres any way we get rid of him. imagine him not on the roster and you will see we will be seriously lacking in depth at that position. imo anybody who thinks Steven Means is going to come in and become a sack master has delusions of grandeur.

I do like the way Schiano has handled this situation. put him as a 2nd stringer and make him earn his way into the starting lineup.

  11. PRBucFan Says:

Wow the things people come up with ahahaha, comical

  12. loung Says:

the season NO!T STAR YET …. HOW YOU KNOW BOWERS BUST ???? COMMON MAN

  13. Pinnaql3 Says:

F*ckin’ retarded! That’s what this article is. Bowers has just as many sacks as Clayborn and McCoy this preseason. You know..the same preseason that is the explanation for Freeman not playing many snaps or having a terrible showing.
I used to come to this site because it was one of very few places that actually had BUCS news and different take on the Franchise. Now, the two clowns writing are just as bad as their collective fictitious character’s much loathed “BSPN”. Just making up dumb sh*t for traffic hits. Very saddening. Very f*cking saddening.

Joe is allowing this comment as an example of extreme ridiculousness and a crime against Joe in the comment section. Not one thing in this post is false, and it wasn’t Joe who demoted Bowers. McCoy and Clayborn’s limited snaps this preseason are completely irrelevant to everything in this post. Apples and oranges. Kinda sad that a simple commentary about a former Buccaneer and how he compares to a current Buccaneer at the same position can evoke such anger. Carry on. –Joe

  14. Anthony Gironda Says:

The Bucs should take a look at S Kenny Phillips. He was just cut by the Eagles.

  15. Illuminati Says:

    Clemson DEs drafted since 2000:

    Bryant McNeal
    Charles Bennett
    Gaines Adams
    Phillip Merling
    Ricky Sapp
    Da’Quan Bowers
    Andre Branch

That’s seven, and we drafted three of those.

First rule on draft day: Don’t draft defensive ends from Clemson.

  16. eric Says:

Really man I saw Bowers in the back field a lot yesterday when he payed it is pretty obvious Coach is mind screwing the kid. The funny thing is this guy come off the street with fresh legs running around like a mad man get three sacks you want hear nothing else from him lol! Daniel I saw a guy who did not get off the line of scrimmage all game give me a break!

  17. PRBucFan Says:

Can’t for the season to start, all this speculation is tiring

  18. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Illuminati

very interesting list you got there. to be fair though Charles Bennett was a 7th round pick so there was hardly any risk there.

  19. Couch Fan Says:

Im with PRBF on this one. Its his first season as a starter and we are calling him a bust before we even get to the final pre-season game…. thats sad.

  20. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Joe

there’s a difference between gifting a 2nd round pick the starting job and a 4th round pick the starting job. that’s the flaw in your comparison.

  21. Joe Says:

@Andrew 1 & Couch Fan – Joe didn’t call Bowers a bust. The regime has treated him as such over the past few weeks. And the comparison is not about draft position. Bowers, like Moore, didn’t prove a thing before being gifted a job. Again, to Schiano’s credit, they aren’t afraid to re-evaluate. Bowers himself said he’s playing like sh*t just a few days ago. Joe heard him say it, and it was in the Tampa Bay Times.

Don’t shoot the messenger. Obviously, Bowers will have every opportunity to re-impress

  22. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Joe

first, draft position makes all the difference. second, expectations are a lot higher for Bowers because he at least got 3 sacks in spot duty, whereas Moore got 0 sacks in starting duty. as far the regime putting him in with the backups, that doesn’t necessary mean the regime is treating him like a bust, imo it means they are trying to motivate him a little more.

  23. Kryq Says:

Why not take a look at Joshua cribbs at KR/PR ? Wouldn’t hurt.

  24. Couch Fan Says:

    @Andrew 1

I was more referring to some of the posts, not joe. But either way, how can you make a comparison before Bowers has even started 1 game yet?… doesnt make much sense to me

  25. Walter Says:

Lol guys, it’s obvious Schiano is motivating Bowers. We all know Teo-Neshiem isn’t better.

  26. Couch Fan Says:

    @Joe not Andrew 1 sorry

  27. vortexx66 Says:

Joe awesome article. On point as usual! Your take keeps me coming back for more.

  28. PRBucFan Says:

Plenty of players that are drafted with high expectations are “gifted” starting positions lol.

Difference between Bowers and others is that he was damaged goods upon being drafted.

Let the guy play before we stone him. He’s a humble guy and probably should think before he speaks and understand that not everyone especially the media has good intentions and will use whatever he says against him.

Nothing that’s speculated about him matters one iota until he’s proven on the field DURING the season that he’s not cut out for the job.

  29. Vic Says:

Poor, Joe. He makes a writes an intelligent article and a bunch of emotional ninnies pile on because they can’t read.

  30. Neil Says:

Hey, all I know is he hasn’t done anything in the offseason worth being excited about….similar to Freeman. A guy comes in off the street and has more sacks being thrown in there, doesn’t bode well for someone who’s been in the system for 2 years and is an athletic, promising young guy. Hopefully results during the season outweigh his lackluster offseason. If you told me Doug Martin had a terrible offseason and was lazy, accomplished nothing during preseason then put up monster numbers in the regular season….I could care less. Frustrating to watch these scrimmages and seeing nothing from him (or Freeman). Jury is still out. Expectations have been lowered though haha.

    Joe Says
“To disagree with you, Moore was not necessarily a bust at all. Fourth-round picks like Moore are not expected to be stars or even necessarily starters.”

I have to disagree with you here. A 4th, 5th, 6th or 7th rounder can still be busts. If you get drafted and are so bad you cannot make a career of it, that makes you a bust.

It is alo too soon to label Bowers anything either way. Just because he didn’t start in a preseason game doesn’t mean he won’t in the regular season. Schiano probably wanted to see just how good Scott was.

And even if Scott ends up getting the starting role in the regular season it doesn’t mean Bowers is not good…it means Scott, in theory, is better. And the jury is still out on that.

While I agree Bowers hasn’t lit things up, it IS preseason. We’ve seen players have contrasting results in regular season many, many times before. In both directions.

  32. Joey Lacey Says:

I have said it before we should hv signed a veteran defensive end or kept Bennet> We did neither so we hv to hope Trevor scott does good> As for Freeman our Oline is terrible And wwe had several drops last night so blame Schiano and Dominik for having all the cap money and didn’t sign no one to rush the psser

whatever… the fact is he has been demoted for the time being and needs to fight his way back into the starting lineup. will he be the week 1 starter? cant wait to find out.

I like Dominick. He has the same record that McKay had after 4 years…slightly better actually. The next couple years will be the deciding factor. Schiano is here for at least 3 years after this one and Dominick will be here as long as Schiano.

As much as I like Schiano, Dominik has 1 year remaining on his contract. Dom has been here 5 years now. Schiano has a better chance at staying then Dom after this year if it is a dissapointment. In my opinion, if they let Dom go, they’ll hire Hickey within and Schiano will have more control on WHO HE WANTS to build.

I just listened back to the condensed game on nfl gamepass and to be fair Bowers had a decent night. I’m puzzled as to why they feel the need to stunt almost every play on defense. I hope Joe will try to dig what’s the philosophy under that.. Did Schiano defense at Rutgers was a heavy stunt defense?

  41. Max Says:

I saw him just clowning around on the sidelines with GMC during preseason. GMC of course was soaked in sweat because he’s a starter and bowers was completely dry.

I think he’s on his way out after this season.

I’m willing to lay down a huge wager on that. The Glazer family really likes Dominik. Joel has said that Mark is practically part of his family, and they admire, and have deep respect for him. That’s a big endorsement, and doesn’t sound like he will be going anywhere soon. Even if you got an army to follow your fire Dominik campaign, they still wouldn’t do it. They’re committed to Dominik for the long haul.

Thankfully you’re around to set everyone straight, all knowing one. Please, bless us with your insightful breakdown of Dominik’s choices as a GM versus any other GM’s moves during the same time span.

  44. scubog Says:

Good or bad; Mark Dominik’s roots are in scouting, not administration.

  45. BirdDoggers Says:

Scott could handle the bulk of the snaps and Bowers could rotate in throughout the game. Hopefully Bowers shows something throughout the season. The defense will struggle without a pass rush, regardless of who’s in the secondary.
