Schein: Freeman Could Be Benched

August 12th, 2013
Adam Schein of SiriusXM believes Bucs backup quarterback Mike Glennon could be the Bucs starter sometime this season.

Adam Schein of SiriusXM believes Bucs backup quarterback Mike Glennon could be a starter sometime this season.

Now before Joe gets rolling here, just because he likes a certain media personality doesn’t mean Joe believes everything he/she says. No one is perfect. The last guy alleged to have been a perfect man was nailed to a tree.

Joe is a big fan of popular sports radio personality Adam Schein. The New York-based footballholic, who can be heard weekdays on Mad Dog Radio, exclusively on SiriusXM, is all worked up about the coming football season as most red-blooded Americans are, and he offered a quick Bucs take Friday.

In short, this will get the Mike Glennon Mob panting; Schein firmly believes if Josh Freeman struggles, then he will be benched.

“I think Tampa has a deep and talented offense. Doug Martin is an absolute bolt, a legit feature back. The offensive line, if Carl Nicks is healthy, will be strong. Vincent Jackson is a star. They bring in Darrelle Revis – who knows if Revis is going to be healthy? But certainly if he is healthy that is an upgrade, no question about that. But Josh Freeman is the ‘Yeah, but… ‘ when it comes to the Buccaneers,” Schein said. “And don’t be surprised if Mike Glennon at some point outplays him and plays and/or starts for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I don’t think Greg Schiano is a fan of Josh Freeman at all. “

Joe does not believe this one iota. Again, Joe loves Schein, but this is just inaccurate. There is a perception out there, fueled in the offseason by unnamed sources via the fingers of prickly Pete Prisco of CBS Sports, that there is angst in the relationship between Schiano and Freeman. That simply is hogwash.

There is no way Freeman, short of him going Trent Dilfer, is benched. It is just not going to happen. Hell, if Freeman puts up Dilfer numbers and the Bucs make the playoffs, he returns next season as the starting quarterback.

The interesting element ot Schein’s take is that midway through the 2012 season, Schein said he trusted Christian Ponder more than Freeman. Sure enough, Freeman vanished in the second half of the season when the Bucs needed him the most, and Ponder, with two key wins over the playoff-bound Texans and the Packers, led the Vikings to the postseason.

Joe knows the Mike Gennon Mob sits in their backyards with pin cushions and voodoo dolls and rabbits feet hoping and praying that Glennon is the starting quarterback soon. That crowd would love nothing more than to dance on Freeman’s grave.

Let it go guys. Joe has a better chance of waking up next to curvy Rachel Watson after a long evening of wrestling between the sheets.

Nobody like this hack, Schein, stop bringing us his anti-buc takes. He never has anything good to say about the team, Josh or Darrelle.

We don’t care to read this…find somebody to quote who doesn’t bad mouth us every chance he gets.

  2. the_buc_realist Says:

Nobody wants to dance on the grave of JFro-6pak, Its just that the QB play has to be better with what this Offensive unit. At this point it could be any three of the Qbs on the roster as long as the ceiling is raised.

  3. Couch Fan Says:

I’ll just say this. The chances that Freeman struggles this year is high considering he’s had some big struggles every year so far. How much of a struggle will it be is a more fair question. Another fair question is how long will Dom/Schiano tolerate his struggles before trying something else?

I tend to agree with Schein, this is a vital year for all involved, not just Freeman. If he indeed struggles, everyones Job is on the line. Taking a chance on Glennon, to me, is no different than taking a chance on a struggling Freeman.

Freeman can shut all this talk up though with a solid year.

  4. bucrightoff Says:

The media seems to have a pretty big hard on trying to force a controversy that isn’t there. It needs to be the regular season already

  5. bucfanjeff Says:

Schein is an idiot. I’ve never liked him.

It won’t happen…IF it does – GIGANTIC IF – then we probably are looking forward to next years draft.

  6. Bucfan40 Says:

Would it really surprise people to see Josh start the year 1-2 with like 7-8 interceptions? Wouldn’t at all.

  7. tampabaybucfan Says:

Freeman…,might struggle, Glennon might replace him, Freeman might perform, Freeman might be franchised.
A whole lot of “mights’….doesn’t equal one “did”……

Shaun King….the expert… thought we should have already signed Freeman to an “el-cheapo” contract…..yea Shaun…

“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  8. robert Says:

Schiano did not spend a 3rd round pick when we had other pressing needs because he was enamoured with Free.

If J5 struggles, Glennon will come in!

    GLENNON FOR PRESIDENT!

  9. Ian_620WDAE Says:

7 or 8 ints after 3 games? the JF5 hatred has officially turned into a witch hunt.

If Glennon takes any meaningful snaps this season, we are screwed

  10. tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Robert

I agree entirely.I am a Freeman supporter. Anyone that hopes he won’t do well isn’t a true fan.
That being said….we didn’t bring in Glennon to be a perrenial backup. If Josh gives them a chance, they will bench him and replace him with Glennon & save $90-$100 million to buy a TE & 3rd reciever for Glennon next year.
My bet, however is on Freeman performing at a high enough level to be resigned.

  11. robert Says:

I think J5 will do just enough not to get benched…..but will it be enough for the playoffs? that’s the question.

  12. bucrightoff Says:

If Mike Glennon plays 1 second this season, we better be tanking to get Jadaveon. Otherwise it would be a catastrophe to see him anywhere near the field.

  13. the_buc_realist Says:

    @tampabaybucfan

I agree with Shaun King. If the bucs had a cheapo deal with JFro, then we could trade him for a third or conditional 2nd round pick due to performance next year. The pressure to perform is very high this year. If the Bucs are down in the 3rd and 4th quarters the Bucs have to put up offense. If the Bucs are up 2 touchdowns in the 3rd and 4th the Bucs will have to put up offense Because the D-line cannot pass rush and the other team will be throwing the ball all over the field.

  14. Couch Fan Says:

And you base this off 1 pre-season game in which 1 of our starting DEs didn’t play at all and the other was playing a different position most of the game? Lol

  15. tampabaybucfan Says:

    @ Realist

Actually….I don’t agree with Shaun King….I don’t think Freeman would have signed a cheap deal. If he ends up performing, then we will have to pay. If not he is gone.
My only real concern is if he falls somewhere in-between doing well & doing poorly. In that case, I would let him go and take my chances with Glennon & the $90 mil.

  16. Justin Says:

How many Bucs practices has Schein attended? Did he watch the first preseason game? Has he ever seen Glennon throw the football in a Bucs uniform?

Guy is just blowing hot air.

  17. TBuc_40 Says:

On a side note, Belicheck doesn’t like Tom Brady (drafted Ryan Mallet in 3rd Round), Shannahan doesn’t like RGIII (drafted Kirk Cousins 4th Round), John Fox doesn’t like Peyton Manning (Drafted Brock Osweiler in 2nd Round). This is all BS. We drafted the player we thought was best available and because Schiano said he wants competition its all Chicken Little for Freeman.

  18. joseph mamma Says:

Anybody on the team can be benched if their play is bad enough. Not everybody on the team though has a third round draft choice waiting behind them if they falter.

  19. Chef Paul Says:

“My only real concern is if he falls somewhere in-between doing well & doing poorly. In that case, I would let him go and take my chances with Glennon & the $90 mil”

Me too. It’s easy to replace a QB that has a meltdown every year. Anybody can do that. If he has an in-between season I still want him on this team, but for 90 – 100 million? No thank you.

All we really NEED is a decent offensive manager for a QB. Plenty of veteran QB’s should be able to manage this offense. That’s why I have faith in Freeman. I firmly believe he can do it, but if he can’t, bye bye

  20. Tye Says:

I don’t know about Glennon being any better than JF or not, that will be revealed in time but all the comparing a 4 year starter to a rookie doesn’t speak highly of JF’s play….

What I do know is that if JF continues to play the same way as the past few years then he is the problem not the solution… As a Buc’s fan for so many years it is SO frustrating, aggravating and disheartening to watch preseason games and notice so many 2nd and 3rd string QBs seem to play better with greater accuracy than JF has shown the past few years!

  21. Jbeachbuc Says:

Personally,I like Schien, he seems to like the Bucs.

    Off topic:
Looks like Myron is now a Lion… Hmmmm

  22. BucNasty!!! Says:

Everybody keep bashing freehbut can anybody find us our defensive rankins since hes been the qb??? He put up franchisenumbers yet its all his faukt the TEAM isnt playoff bound he woukdnt have as many interceptions if he didnt havr to take as many risk or try to keep uo with teams when our offense is ranked 9th Ichallenge any one especially the buc realist to compare free stats wit the sb winner flacco free numbers are better but u see the results of having a bettet defense sure ya qb gotta stop the turnovers but the team can deff make it easier on him by gettin the ball back on third down providing him wit more chances an then hell stop forcing things cuz he wont have to lets go revis!!!

  23. BucNasty!!! Says:

Free year was better then flacco td and yrds he has more int but nore tds as well yet since he got ray lewis he gets a new contract while free gets to hear the glennon bs get it together bucs fans snap out of it dont drink the hate free is just what hes supposed to b a above average game manager an down n tampa where Warren sapp played ball thsts mote then enough from a qb n my book true buc fans can ask dilfer shaun king and jeff garcia plus gradkowski…. need I say more leftwich lol ok I quit

  24. rocmontana Says:

@ joe wish u would choose words more carefully that part in your article is offensive to christians u almost lost some readers that are here regularly

  25. Joe Says:

    Andrew:

Nobody like this hack, Schein, stop bringing us his anti-buc takes. He never has anything good to say about the team, Josh or Darrelle.

This is patently inaccurate. Schein actually likes the Bucs but does not trust Freeman. That’s a very fair statement. Even in the quote Joe posted he raved about a few Bucs players.

If, as you suggest, “nobody” listens to Schein, exactly how did he get a promotion? Generally, radio hosts who cannot get a listener are selling siding to old ladies over the phone to pay for rent.

  26. Couch Fan Says:

    @Rocmontana

I’m a christian and I’m not at all offended by what he said. Us “christians” need to stop being so sensitive. I can’t speak for Joe and I have no idea what his religious views are but not everyone believes in god, some dont believe in anything. Relax, take this for what it is, a blog that is intended for football, fans. The Buccaneers specifically.

  27. Biff Barker Says:

There are $19 million reasons why Freeman won’t be here next year Joe.
The writing on the wall is the Bucs keeping Dan O on the roster this year.

  28. Buc1987 Says:

@ TBuc_40…. everyone needs to scroll back up and read your post again. Especially robert. Especially the people that think if the Bucs are drafting high next season because Freeman sucked it up, are not going to take a QB in the 1st round vs Glennon.

I saw nobody even reply back to you. As if your statement was meaningless. When it was the best point made on JBF in the past month. –Bravo man bravo.

  29. robert Says:

brady and manning are getting AARP papers in the mail and RGIII is hurt.

    go finger yourself 87.

[That's enough violations for "Crimes Against Joe" to be run. -- Joe]

  30. robert Says:

    test

  31. joseph mamma Says:

Nobody trusts Freeman completely. He, so far in his career, is not a very good starter. At times he is great and at other times he is terrible. His turnover’s come in bunches. If he is inconsistent another year, this coach is not hitching his wagon to him. I don’t think it matters if they have a good relationship or not.

  32. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

    @rocmontana

” joe wish u would choose words more carefully that part in your article is offensive to christians u almost lost some readers that are here regularly”

Being an atheist in Amerika today is like being the only sober person at a party, yet no one will let you drive.

Seriously, the Freeman supporters will never get the Glazers to let loose $100 million plus to a Michael Jackson clone.

  33. James in Memphis Says:

Didn’t Adam once say that Freeman would be an eventual NFL MVP? Come on Schein.. I know you read this blog. Stick your guns bro. Freemanhas the worse accuraccuracy out of any QB in the NFC. I said it from day one..

  34. BigSombrero Says:

While it most likely wont happen, its not as implausible as Joe has made it seem the past 3 months. If Freeman goes through one of his droughts I don’t think Schiano is going to sit idle and let him kill our season. In my eyes, skill-set wise they are interchangeable. Maybe Freeman has more overall talent but hes so wildly inconsistent that it doesn’t matter. If he pulls the same stuff this season, he might get benched and rightfully so.

People keep saying “Free is our best option, we need him” well sorry to burst some bubble around this joint but the last thing any NFL team needs is an unreliable QB.

  35. Buc1987 Says:

Putting Glennon in would mean our season IS killed already.

  36. Bobby Says:

Give me a wildly inconsistent QB that throws 27 TD’s and goes for over 4000 yds. Just give me a good defense to go along with him.

  37. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

Putting Glennon in would be part of the JCP. (Jadaveon Clowney Project)

  38. Tye Says:

    @ rocmontana

As a man of faith and of God I say to you through love that true Christians should not get offended but rather notice signs and opportunities that show us when, who and what to pray for… You never know, Joe might be a fellow believer and he just hasn’t yet come to the full knowledge of God or rather fully matured in faith…

  39. PRBucFan Says:

    @Rocmontana
Yea, I hear ya, I didn’t care much for the thrown in useage for the word “alleged” but it is what it is, everyone has their beliefs and are entitled to them. However incorrect they may be.

  40. PRBucFan Says:

  41. PRBucFan Says:

    Welcome back Miguel!!!

Still as chipper as usual I see ;)

  42. Miguel El Magnifico Says:

Thank you PRBucFan. I am happy to be back. Go Bucs.

  43. Andrew 2 Says:

    @joe

hes a NY reporter, who reports about NY teams

his view on the Bucs is irrelevant

  44. SeanyMac in SC Says:

Could someone please explain to me what Glennon is doing with his left hand?!? Is this really “good mechanics”?

  45. john Says:

Guys, everyone is saying it won’t happen, but why won’t it? What are your reasons? Personally, I know it could easily happen and I’ve seen it happen with Schiano.
