Clayborn Injures Groin; Status Unknown

July 31st, 2013

Greg Schiano broke the bad news after this morning’s practice. Adrian Clayborn injured his groin very early in the session and “couldn’t practice.”

Schiano had no timetable for Clayborn’s return and said it’s “usually not a good sign.”

Joe doesn’t want to go overboard here, but the Bucs’ biggest question marks are along the defensive line, and there’s not a load of depth at defensive end.

Fingers are crossed across the Bay area.

I hope Clayborn will be ok. The Bucs have a lot riding on the big fella.

  2. traew01 Says:

Bucs put WAY too much faith in the return of a bunch of injured players.

Nicks hobbling. Who knows about Revis. Now Clayborn with another serious injury.

Depressing. Way too much hype for this team early on. Still a very avwrag and injury prone team.

  3. Bucky23 Says:

Really there isn’t a good reason why Dominik refused to either A. Re-Sign Michael Bennett, or B. bring in a proven veteran to provide some insurance. The cap room was there. For Schiano to preach that he wants competition at every position the same cannot be said for the Defensive End position. ( I know that they drafted Gholston and Means). I hope that this injury isn’t serious and he can at least be ready to rumble in a month. Bowers hasn’t shown an ability to play a full season. SCARY TIMES ahead.

  4. Ryan Mckay Says:

    Ugh

  5. Buc1987 Says:

    Oh noooooooooo I jinxed him.

  6. Robbie_G Says:

Joe, I think I am gonna’ be ill. This is the ONE area everyone was talking about, They did not bring in a vet to help the D line. They put all their eggs In the basket of Clay and Da’Quan, boy I sure hope Te’o. Means, who ever are ready

  7. BuccFanInHawkeyeCountry Says:

    Well that ruined my day

  8. Joe Strummer Says:

3..2…1.. Holy Crap the sky is falling, fire Dom

  9. Justin Says:

Still weeks away from opening day. Lets wait for the report until we go off the handle. Remember everyone thought Blount ripped his knee apart last year but he was back in a couple of days.

  10. ShutTheBucUp Says:

hopefully its just a strain. don’t soil yourselves quite yet. fingers crossed!

  11. J 2.0 Says:

Do they have John Abraham’s agent on speed dial yet?

  12. Bucky23 Says:

    @ J 2.0

    Abraham isn’t available anymore

  13. Matt Says:

John abraham already signed w/ the cardinals…Richard Seymour is still available though

  14. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Wow, today sucks already. Even if he is available this season I am pretty sure this is a lingering type of injury and will affect his play. Seems like we really can’t catch a break when it comes to injuries.

  15. Mitch Says:

    #*@$!!!

  16. Buc1987 Says:

Hopefully J-Fro 6 pack and Martin can drag the DL into the playoffs. LOL @ realist

  17. Buc1987 Says:

Joe please do try to get us status updates, cause now I’m freaking. I do like Teo though.

  18. Andrew 1 Says:

what is it with this team and injuries. its starting to become ridiculous now. somebody got some kind of voodoo curse on us or something.

  19. Tim Says:

    OMG! The sky is falling!

No not really, its likely a strain. Even if its a pull there is plenty of time before opening day. Groin injuries are lingering and can take along time to heal. I believe the Bucs are just being cautious and don’t want him to farther injure. Unless I see hear or else where that its a tear, I am on not even worried.

  20. robert Says:

Generally, speaking, Grade 1 symptoms usually disappear within a week; Grade 2 symptoms last 2-3 weeks; and Grade 3 symptoms can persist for 6-8 weeks or longer.

no worries. he’ll be back. means and gohlston get more reps.

  21. Buc1987 Says:

Andrew…every team has to deal with injuries. Hell, Percy Harvin just went out for the next 3-4 months with an injury.

  22. Nathan Schrader Says:

So whos going to Start Week 1 now? Any thoughts?

  23. Joe Says:

Joe please do try to get us status updates

Joe just did. You have the latest.

  24. robert Says:

harvin……lol he aint comin back. dude just got PAYYYYED!!!

even if he does he’ll probably pull a jamarcus Russell and be 50lbs overweight. he won’t be a factor this year. or maybe next…

  25. robert Says:

Greg just told me Teo will be your starter for now.

  26. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ Buc1987

I know, but you got to admit the amount of season ending injuries this team has every year is staggering. hopefully this one is nothing serious.

Percy Harvin is not the best example because hes always injured.

  27. robert Says:

    @ Andrew

I’m quite happy with bumps, bruises and strains. we’re doing great so far IMO. until someone goes down for months I’ll be happy.

    We’re lookin good right now!

  28. bill Says:

    Juqua Parker, anyone?

  29. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Sorry if this is premature but I have been anxious for an update.

    Stephen Holder ‏@HolderStephen

Initial word I hear is that Adrian Clayborn’s groin injury is not considered serious. There’s no major concern here right now. #Bucs

  30. TheRealVince Says:

    Oh no!! WE SUCK AGAIN

  31. fridgebob Says:

    Andrew 1,

The average number of games missed by starters, per team, due to injury is 47. That’s NFL wide. We are not alone.

  32. Buc1987 Says:

    Thanks WestCoast

  33. BucFan20 Says:

Strain, pull who cares. This shows how fast injury happens to KEY players. If we were in the season this proves the point. You have no good backup. You can almost wager Bowers will go down with his history. So who do we have? The only hope is someone gets cut we can use. And hope they pick them up or the defensive backs may look better but will still get picked apart.

  34. Andrew 1 Says:

    @ fridgebob

your probably right, but for some reason it just seems like we have an unusually large number of injured players each year.

its not so much the non serious injuries im worried about, its those pesky season ending ones. knock on wood we have slim to non.

  35. Andrew 1 Says:

but I will say even non-serious injuries still matter because its still taking time away from the field where they can learn and get better.

  36. robert Says:

bucfan you make it sound like the cupboard is bare

means, teo, gohlston, bowers and clayborn who is not serious that we know of yet. –that’s 5 and you can only start 2 last I heard.

there’s only a few guys in the league with huge sack #’s and some of those are not even DE’s. I’m glad we did not over pay for Abraham and we are grooming our own.

  37. You go Joe Says:

“@HolderStephen: Initial word I hear is that Adrian Clayborn’s groin injury is not considered serious. There’s no major concern here right now. #Bucs”

Good news. Now to get the proper word of the injury.

  38. dannymac Says:

Injury prone.Back up plan Mark? Oh yea as usual. NONE!

  39. stevek Says:

We better get more than 30 sacks as a team this year.

    Enought BS.

We need a 10+ sack guy, not had one since the great Simeon Rice….

Clayborn will bounce back, but do we have enough depth?

Maybe Dom can resign Haynesworth for depth, again. HA!

  40. Buc1987 Says:

“@HolderStephen: Initial word I hear is that Adrian Clayborn’s groin injury is not considered serious. There’s no major concern here right now. #Bucs”

Good news. Now to get the proper word of the injury.

^^^maybe he just got kicked in the nuts?

  41. Adam Says:

Here we go… I knew it.

  42. Oahubuc Says:

At least we have a proven viable starter in Mike Bennett. Oh wait…

  43. Buc'n Junkie Says:

This is why I hate training camp and preseason. Let’s get Revis out there so he can destroy his repaired knee again! and Bowers, and Clayborn, and Nicks, and Joseph. @$%^ why stop there. By the time the regular season rolls around we can trot out a team that resembles a mash unit. Four preseason games is stupid, and it takes to many good players out of the equation before it even counts for anything.

  44. Dan Says:

he was on the bikes… per http://www.bucsnation.com/2013/7/31/4574728/buccaneers-training-camp-returner-jobs-up-for-grabs

  45. Dan Says:

    so cant be that bad

  46. robert Says:

junkie put away the pipe. the starters play maybe one game in total during preseason. I’d rather that them have them go out there cold and suck or get even more hurt.

  47. the_buc_realist Says:

    Breaking news!!!!

the pop-star was seen on the roof of One Buc. And Jfro-6pak was yelling ” don’t jump, you haven’t given me my money yet!”

  48. Dan Says:

haha haha haha its so cute to see you try to garner attention with ridiculosity.

  49. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

I love that “realist” likes to blame ANYBODY let alone the GM when a player gets injured. Nicks, Clayborn, Bowers, Price, etc. Exactly how is that on the GM unless they had some serious medical history? Even the ones that did (Clayborn and Bowers), their recent injures had nothing to do with their prior ones.

Just gotta gripe about something. I like the disappearing act you do whenever BamBamBuc, or anybody, points out your terrible logic. It will be a sad day for you when Freeman and Dominick get their extensions.

Second in the NFC South in 2012 and moving to first in 2013. 🙂

  50. the_buc_realist Says:

    @westcoast

I didn’t disappear, i just fell asleep reading Bam Bam’s game by game break down from last year. And i told you that we could remedy the pop-star’s ” bad luck” i thought that we were all going to send him rabbit’s feet and four leaf clovers.

8 more days till Bucs 1st preseason game,,,,,,can’t wait!

  51. Bobby Says:

My gosh people….it’s a friggin groin not an ACL. Get a grip kiddies. Do you think training camp has no risk of injuries at all? I’d much rather he injure a groin now than in game one. It’s football and yes, we have backup DE’s that are as good as everyone elses backup DE’s. Again, it always amazes me how little some of you know about football. You act as though every team in the NFL has pro bowl depth coming out the wazzoo. No one has the salary cap space to pay for that good of depth. You have the starters and then the rest are backups. I think we have as good as most teams in Teo. Yes we do have some rookies but my guess is so do a lot of other teams. I’m confident that we’ll find a way to get the job done in the event of injuries just like when Nicks and Joseph went down.

  52. Bobby Says:

Also, there will be cuts after training camp and need be we can pick up additional players then.

  53. PRBucFan Says:

    Any recent news about this?

I am confident we will get through this, Teo has been lights out.

He may just thrive in this situation.

  54. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I’m sure Clayborn will be fine…but this further illustrates that the 3rd rounder should have been Defensive Line this year.

  55. PRBucFan Says:

Yea I don’t agree we are not “set” at QB and until this season is done it is still an uncertainty on this team.

It was the wise thing to do to grab a QB and start developing him if anything.

    Just my opinion.

Plus we still got some help along the D line in the draft that I believe will produce.

  56. Adam Says:

I don’t blame the GM when a player gets hurt. I blame the GM when there isn’t depth behind him…. and I ESPECIALLY blame him when there was depth to be had for PEANUTS LATE INTO THE SUMMER.

  57. PRBucFan Says:

We have depth, if you don’t like it or agree, that’s another thing.

Stephen Holder tweeted that the injury is not considered serious.
    Hopefully this is true.

  58. Bobby Says:

Again….how is there no ‘depth’? Do you mean no used up veterans who are on the market because they are injury prone or at the end of their careers? How is that any better ‘depth’ than what we have? Rookies start on a regular basis in the NFL now.

Here is Atlanta’s depth chart for DE

    Umenyiora, Osi 10 yrs
    Thurmond, Brandon Rookie
    Massaquoi, Jonathan 1yr
    Matthew, Cliff 2yr
    Maponga, Stansly Rookie
    Henderson, Cam Rookie
    Goodman, Malliciah Rookie
    Biermann, Kroy 5 yrs

Two guys have been in the league for longer than 2 yrs and 4 of them are rookies. So….see my point? Nobody, and I mean NOBODY has quality depth at all positions because NOBODY can afford it. You have your #1’s and the rest are fillers at most positions. If they were good enough to get drafted most of the time good coaching can do wonders.

  59. Kevin Says:

This sucks but I think with the mentality of next man up and Schiano’s no nonsense for effort and toughness, I would put bowers across from Gholdston and rotate means. It’s not a season ending injury and there are is still over a month for week 1. Don’t panic

  60. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

Fell asleep or ran out of things to say?

Should he have just said that “you’re wrong”? I suppose it conveys the same message but it is more arguable than explaining EXACTLY how and why you are wrong. His statistics from Freeman’s best games seem to prove that Doug generally benefited from Josh’s good play, not the other way around as you claimed.

  61. PRBucFan Says:

“The run sets up the pass” is a famous saying

    Just sayin’ lol

Generally taught to players by coaches actually…

  62. Splengo Says:

I don’t know how bad this is but I do know about this type of injury. If this is not a grade III, meaning a tear requiring surgery, worst case Clayborn will be game ready after the bye.

  63. scubog Says:

Thanks for the insight Robert. Even Realist had a bit of sarcasm for the fans who are over-reacting to a minor injury. Bobby made a good point about Atlanta’s less than stellar depth chart. Gee, wonder why Abraham didn’t return? Maybe they got tired of his negative locker room impact.
