Gerald McCoy Righting Past Wrongs

McCoy says vets didn’t help or teach him back in 2010

Today wasn’t the first time Joe has heard of how Bucs stud Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is bound and determined to help fellow rookies. As McCoy told Joe during minicamp, the quicker the rookies can improve, the quicker the team improves. And McCoy is all about winning.

No. 93 reiterated that stance and went a bit further this morning. McCoy talked about how he was shunned by veteran defensive linemen teammates his rookie year.

“A lot of us have been in the system for a year but for the new guys, the walk-throughs and the learning periods and the film sessions, the chemistry is starting to come together. We are starting to figure it out. Everybody is starting to get it. The old guys know how coach wants it. The new guys are starting to understand how we do things around here,” McCoy said.

The rookie linemen “have stepped right in and are willing to learn. I have been bringing them out every day early before practice We have a little extra time so I get all the rookie defensive linemen and I bring them outside with me and we work on different fundamentals. What I am doing to them I never got. I never had anyone to help me. Had nobody to coach me, had nobody to take me under their wing. I had none of that. I want to be that guy so they don’t have to say, ‘Well, nobody helped me.’ The vets didn’t teach me. The better the [rookies] are, the better we will all be. That’s just my mentality.”

No, Joe isn’t sure who GMC was referring to, sackless Kyle Moore, Ryan Sims, Stylez White, Tim Crowder? Granted, most of the vets expected the No. 3 overall draft pick to take their job, so it is somewhat understandable how they may have been less than proactive to help GMC, no matter how rotten that move is.

This is what Joe does know: You want a leader on your defense who is sick and tired of losing and doing whatever he can to turn the Bucs ‘ fortunes around? Look no further than GMC.

Well you had the worst coach in the history of the Buccaneers, Gerald. That’s why.

    @Joe

If possible if/when you interview Mccoy or another lineman, can you ask if they plan on rushing the passer different from last year? Point being I remember last year they somewhat complained about the scheme holding them back.

Or have they perfected in that scheme now which they should be able to attack the QB more?

    Thanks

  3. Raphael Says:

Glad he is on our team..dude will be a beast this year..

Who was that Moron that kept bashing GMC ? 2 . 3 or something ?

How does the crow taste ?

  4. Tampabaybucfan Says:

I wonder if “MyLew” will school Banks on how to play Cornerback?
Kidding aside, GMC is great….the real deal!!!

who was the one yelling that the young guys don’t need vets? They have position coaches for that?

Radio was one of the worst NFL coaches in NFL history.

I think that last year, because of the very bad secondary, they were trying as many things as they could to make things work on defense. Blitzing was not done as much as people claim, but they did do it. They also tried a lot of shifting around to get in the heads of offenses. And, in many cases, guys that should have been helping the line at various times were busy trying to help the secondary.

So we won’t have those issues this year.

I don’t know who it was, but I would like to point out that GMC is a home-grown vet. So is Mike Williams. So is Penn. And Joseph. And…well…most of our vets.

And it’s not that people were against bringing in Free Agents. People just felt it should be done at the right time. And it was.

3/4 of buc fans that I ran into online before last season on NFL.com said that GMC was a bust. Got sick and tired of defending him, because I knew they were wrong. Just like you clowns are wrong about #5. I do get your points though when you bash him. You have every right to bash him, because he’s brought us nothing…………..so far. This season I will be proven right again when Freeman sets the field on fire. It’s not even an I think, it’s an I know he’s going to.

  11. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Buc1987, I’ve always been a believer in GMC and Freeman. Heck, I felt Spurlock should have had more chances in the passing game too.

JOE, from what you’ve seen, is Spence moving any faster? I don’t expect him to be a bill rusher of course, but I would like to at least see him exhibit some energy.

  12. SteveK Says:

GMC is taking his game to new heights. Bravo! I am tickled pink to see this guy stepping up, tutoring the newbies and making it his sole responsibility to “win”. This guy is a “Buccaneer Man”. GMC has boss like symptoms.

Great piece Joe, outstanding to see the heart of the defense taking care of business.

Looking forward to seeing Bowers and GMC next to eachother. Who do you double?

  13. Miracle Says:

How do you teach someone who is better than you.. ha. Our “vets” knew they already sucked compared to McCoy

  14. Bucnjim Says:

Who was the guy that hated GMC? Used to be on here every single day telling everyone how bad he was. I think it was the same guy who used to argue with me that Ruud was a Superstar Pro Bowl linebacker. Maybe that’s why he’s not on here anymore…..0-2

  15. Buc1987 Says:

@SteveK…I thought Clayborn was going to line up on the right next to GMC and Bowers was on the left or did I miss something. I could be wrong though.

    Thomas 2.2

  17. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I have sought out all the video I could find and have not once seen Spence playing with the starters. Can anyone that went confirm this?

  18. BigMacAttack Says:

Gerald is a man of Faith. Amen

  19. Bucnjim Says:

Thomas that’s right! He’s either changed his name or found someone else to bother. Funny how very few man up to mistakes. I’m going to put all my eggs in one basket and say that Freeman & the entire offense kill it this year. If he screws the pooch I’ll be here with my hand up saying I was wrong. If he lights it up watch the incredible disappearing act.

  20. BucKing 3 Says:

Just proud to have GMC on our team. Making those around him better, just as Cox stated was needed for him to progress. Can’t wait for the season to start. Go Bucs!

  21. Buc1987 Says:

For this my next jersey purchase will be McCoy. I was going to wait to see how well Clayborn does and pull the trigger on that jersey. Now I have my sights set on GMC. Dude just wants to win. Period.

I whole heartedly agree with you on this statement. I hope that they will admit they were wrong, but from past experience I seriously doubt it.

  23. BigMacAttack Says:

I don’t care about who is wrong and who is right. I just want to win and win big. I want everybody on the bandwagon, sellouts, TV time and the whole nine yards. I believe they can and will do it. I think Schiano learned something after losing Davin last preseason. It sounds like he will be very careful with his horses and wait to turn them loose in Week 1.

I have to thank the Rays for making this past month most pleasurable and getting me through this off time. I have hated baseball for years but the Rays have turned it around for me.

  24. Buc1987 Says:

    Go Sox!

  25. Buc1987 Says:

^^^ lol let the attacks begin. seriously though my mom has me paying attention to the Rays and I now realize they are better than my Red Sox this year. They deserve to win the East.

  26. scubog Says:

Say it isn’t so 1987. If you live here you own ALL of the local teams. The ones I get a kick out of are the Steeler fans (my home town) who root for the Rays instead of the then losing Pirates. Frontrunners?

  27. chef paul Says:

This article alone is making me rethink my thoughts on GMC. Perhaps he is a better leader than i was giving him credit for. Good for him doing that for those youngins. Man Joe every article you write makes me like this team more and more. If you keep this up, I’m going to betting hundy sticks that they win the Super Bowl before the season starts
