The Buccaneers “React”

July 7th, 2013

The Buccaneers have rolled out a new feature on Buccaneers.com that has all kinds of fabulous potential. In something called “Read and React,” the Bucs are steering fans toward select media stories and offering organizational feedback/commentary on each piece.

The Bucs have done this previously on a small and very intermittent scale, but now the feature has a fancy name the team is calling it a “series.”

Of note in this week’s edition, the Buccaneers want you know there was plenty of, um, interpretation involved when Tampa Bay Times beat writer Stephen Holder took a sarcastic jab at Greg Schiano’s public endorsement of Josh Freeman on NFL Network last week.

To which Holder reacts: “Well then.  No wavering there.

“This is only news because Schiano has so often left things open to interpretation when speaking about his quarterback situation. Although most astute NFL observers would agree Glennon is no immediate threat to Freeman, a four-year veteran, Schiano’s open-ended statements raised questions.”

Of course, in the sidebar to this column, there are five links, which lead to the following stories previously posted on TampaBay.com:

1. (May 20) “[C]oach Greg Schiano proclaimed – again – that Josh Freeman is the team’s unquestioned starting quarterback.”

2. (May 8) “Bucs draft pick Mike Glennon isn’t a threat to incumbent starting quarterback Josh Freeman, according to general manager Mark Dominik and coach Greg Schiano. Freeman apparently sees things that way, too.”

3. (April 9) “The Bucs, as an organization, aren’t all that concerned about the record-breaking Freeman and the quarterback position.”

4. (April 26) “The Bucs have considered bringing in competition for quarterback Josh Freeman, whose uneven play has frustrated coaches at times. Whether or not Mike Glennon qualifies remains to be seen, but the Bucs must have some conviction about him after selecting him in the third round of the NFL draft tonight.”

5. (April 26) “I think that’s hard with any rookie quarterback. It’s going to be a matter of how quickly he grasps our system. The fact is we have a starting quarterback in Josh Freeman.” – Schiano

You can click through above and read the Bucs’ complete reaction. The point was clear to Joe; the Bucs think Greg Schiano has been pretty darn clear with his message about who is the team’s No. 1 quarterback and Holder’s sarcasm was quite late in the year to be relevant.

Joe loves this new Read and React series. Perhaps the Buccaneers will one day find one of Joe’s takes worthy of dissection.

  1. Couch Fan Says:

There’s no doubt that Glennon was not picked to be the starting QB this year. Nobody disputes that. But Freeman’s play the last 4 years isnt indicative of someone who is so good that theres no way he can NOT be beaten out by a rookie.

If it was then this whole Glennon issue would be non existant. Anyways, let the man best man win and whoever that is will hopefully lead us to the playoffs!

In this new media age of the Internet & 24/7 Cable TV news there would not be much to keep us interested without some sort of controversy. It is only natural that writers & reporters would want to keep them alive or even create them at the onset.
And yes….this includes to some extent….You Joe. But thats OK as long as its not overdone. I believe Joe does a good job of reporting without overdoing it.
Lets create a controversy over whether Myron or Darrell will start at CB. Maybe Shaun King has some thoughts.
“Shaun King, one of two Buc Quarterbacks that lost a NFC Championship Game when his defense gave up 11 or fewer points.”

  3. tampabaybucfan Says:

    Darrelle

  4. BKNYfootballhead Says:

It’s always apparent that Joe is a big, big fan of Stephen Holder.

  5. Snook Says:

    Holder is a piss can.

  6. Bb Says:

Freeman will start unless he is hurt, hopefully he will be able to throw short passes at a least 80 percent. (less than 5 yards). He can already throw it up for grabs deep and that can work with great receivers . But if not than replace him. He needs to take this seriously, and not play with guns or do drugs. Or drink to much. Or whatever is his problems off the field .

  7. Piratic Says:

“Perhaps the Buccaneers will one day find one of Joe’s takes worthy of dissection.”
Yup. It’s only a matter of time.

  8. RachelWatson'sthong Says:

The Glazerhouses can tell me where to get my Buc info as soon as they put the message board back up. I rarely visit the official site anymore. I go there to check videos of news conferences when something important happens. That’s about it during the off season.

  9. lightningbuc Says:

I find this a bit odd from the Bucs. It’s almost like they are getting in a pissing match with Holder. Kind of weird for an organization to do, in my opinion.

  10. stanglassman Says:

Bb- Why not throw some more wildly unsubstantiated irresponsible off the field accusations about Josh like girl friend beating, child molesting etc.. crap onto your list?

  11. Buc1987 Says:

@stanglassman …there are rumors though that Josh likes to party, and not only likes it but does it a lot.

  12. Mean D Says:

Freeman should begin the season as the starter for the mere fact that he has 4 years NFL experience and Glennon hasn’t taken a snap. But anyone who thinks Schiano and Dominik used their 3rd round pick on what they considered the best QB in the draft to have him on the bench eternally is living in the land of unicorns.

  13. Kennedy Says:

It’s good to see the Bucs stick it to the local media clowns. Bravo!!!!!

  14. Capt. Tim Says:

Anyone who believes the best QB in the draft lasted to the third round is pretty gullible. Hope the Bucs don’t sell you any bridges.

And anyone who watched Mike”the string” Glennon play- and believes he can be anymore than a backup, doesn’t have a clue. 3rd round is about right for a backup. And the Spagetti thin/ Girl Scout weak Glennon couldn’t hold up against NFL Defensive linemen for a long run. He needs about two years of weight lifting and pasta eating to fill out. Plus 2 years of coaching might help cure his “happy feet” and “lock on and throw” problems.

  15. Yeah It's me! Says:

Bout time! I get sick of reporters practically saying whatever they want without having any accountability. This is a perfect example. No matter how many times Coach Schiano says Freeman is the starter some (most) reporters still print what they want either out of ignorance, stupidity, laziness to do proper research or whatever there reason is.Bout Time! Thank You Bucs!

  16. stanglassman Says:

1987- I think we have all heard those rumors and that’s all they are, people who get all excited when they see him out and run to their computer or phone and write everyone they know to say they saw him out. I get that, but I also know people very close to Josh and that say otherwise. I will listen to His girl friend, best friend and what coaches have always said over star struck public any day. I was speaking of “playing with guns and doing drugs more than a 25 year old going out and having a beer in his rare and highly deserved free time.

  17. Buc1987 Says:

@stanglassman….yeah I know what you meant. I’m one of the Freeman supporters. I believe in him. Yes guns and drugs was a little nutty. I know he collects snakes, but never heard about drugs (which he would’ve tested positive for)guns and what have you. Just pointng it out again that partying on the weekends and during the season might be part of his regression. For everyonelse I’m not looking to start another 154 comments again on Freeman. So can we all just not start that again. Atleast wait a week or two to start it up again. Please Joe. Bring us more articles on my favorite defensive player Adrian Clayborn.

  18. Buc'n Junkie Says:

    ^^^^^ me too on A.C.

  19. PRBucFan Says:

Nothing new here, Josh has always been “the guy”

Till he forces the organization’s hand they will never show any kind of a waver in supporting “their guy”.

That’s the way it’s supposed to be done.

They like the rest of us are waiting in anticipation wondering which Freeman will show up this season. After this season we will really see whether he’s “their guy”.

  20. Fritz50 Says:

“throw short passes at a least 80 percent”

Just curious if there is any QB out there that achieves this mark , on a regular basis, for any length throw.

  21. Tackleblockwin Says:

This Freeman vs Glennon debate is so old. Freeman is the starter until he proves otherwise. Everything I have read points to Glennon not being ready yet. I like Freeman, but my guess is that it won’t be to long before Glennon is mentally ready to compete with him. I also don’t see us bringing in a FA QB at the moment. But next year (depending on how things unfold this upcoming season) that is a possibility.

  22. Buc1987 Says:

    ^^^^ yup

  23. Capt. Tim Says:

I’m glad to see some of this Areas irresponsible and talentless writers brought to task also.

Unfortunately, they will keep pumping out Freeman” controversies”.
If you check out another teams sites- damn bear every one is questioning their QB, and most are trumpeting some backup or rookie.

While ignorant, they get attention from the masses- who are also ignorant.
It’s a gimmick to keep reading- thinking there is a story when there isn’t.

In a few more weeks- we will be able to discuss real football issues. Right now- the NFL is pretty much daytime TV- like your wife’s soap operas.

Lotta noise about nothing. To occupy people with emotionless drivel, instead of anything meaningful or important.

  24. Biff Barker Says:

Meh, too bad we won’t be seeing anything meaningful on the Bucs site. Nothing like straight up manna for the poor and hungry. It’s like the state run media with them. You’ll read only they want you to read.
The Glazers yanked the official message board after the comments about Mush, aka Radio, Morris. Also, it became bitch fest central with many former season ticket holders. The Glazers didn’t want their ex customers telling the truth about constant price hikes, not upgrading seats, unsavory billing practices etc. After 5 long years of them pocketing the payroll and leveraging fans for a crappy product, now they want you back folks!
Love my team, its too bad the owners let the franchise go into decay to save Man United.

  25. PRBucFan Says:

Is that why we don’t have the bbs.message board anymore?

  26. andres Says:

joe please find a new reporting angle this shiano/freeman vs. the pundits has been going on for months, for the love of god SOMETHING else ANYTHING!

  27. Joe Says:

joe please find a new reporting angle this shiano/freeman vs. the pundits has been going on for months, for the love of god SOMETHING else ANYTHING!

    Why?

  28. Joe Says:

Is that why we don’t have the bbs.message board anymore?

At the same time the message board went away, the Bucs — and all other NFL teams — redesigned their sites to compy with a league-wide network-type of design/format, much like what baseball did.

Joe knows other teams had message boards too that vanished about the same time. The Falcons still have a spicy team message board that Joe will look at now and then. The Panthers have one; The Saints do not.

  29. PRBucFan Says:

Ahhh ok, thanks Joe I used to love that board and have been waiting for its return but I guess this will be the only place I actually take part in.

    Which is fine with me.

  30. BigMacAttack Says:

Holder has zero cred with me. He is arrogant and condescending at times. He believes that he is The Source for Buc news. I can’t stand the guy and I have avoided the Times’ site for few years now. Useless is the best way I can describe Holder and his site. They have chronic hoof in mouth disease.

  31. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

I REALLY miss those message boards.

On topic, I love this new feature. For years the local and national media has taken liberty with their interpretations of what coaches and team staff say.

Now they are being called to task. It’s about time!

  32. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Love this statement
the coach himself believes that some of his comments right after the 2012 season were unfortunately misleading in terms of competition at the position – but Holder’s most recent post this week certainly present a coach who is fully confident in his starter. Whether or not there has been any inconsistency in Schiano’s statements – reasonable folks could disagree on that point – there’s nothing vague about his most recent comments.”

    That’s calling them to task!

  33. Bayfisher Says:

“Calling them to task!” Is that fan-speak for damage control?

  34. Buc1987 Says:

@BigMacAttack….yes but which one is worse Tom Jones or Holder? I say Tom Jones. I’d spit in his face if I saw him in public. Also have a few choice words for him before the spit left my mouth.

  35. BigMacAttack Says:

No disagreement about Jones. I like Stroud but he sometimes says crazy things too. I do like Roy Cummings but for a while he was hating hard on Chucky. I don’t read or listen much to any of them. I either read it here on JBF or on Bucs site. I do watch Dan Lucas on Sunday nights and Chip Kelly. I like them both. Just tell me what’s going on, who
Did what and how. Leave the spin out, I can spin it myself.

  36. Buc1987 Says:

yah unfortunately my wife gets the slanted Tampa Bay Times. I do enjoy Gary Shelton though. He’s one of the bright spots of not only the sports page, but the entire paper.

  37. Free's A Boob Says:

All of them put Freeman’s quotes into something that borders on English.

  38. Piratic Says:

    ^^^This kid’s like a jilted lover!!^^^

What, did you ask for an autograph or something, and he didn’t comply?

  39. scubog Says:

What’s wrong with a little partying? signed Bret Favre. Wow a guy even threatens to go Hardy Nickerson and hawcker on a reporter. Be careful out there Joe.

  40. SombreoBro Says:

I just wish I was the megaphone in that picture.
