Darrelle Revis To Improve Pass Rush

Yes, it is quite possible the Bucs have gone from the worst secondary to the best secondary in the NFL. Joe is doing his best to try to forget that heinous pass defense last year, but it’s like having one of those nightmares where you swear your old man is yelling at you for something, only to wake up.

The Bucs’ horror show of a pass defense is seared into Joe’s brain and likely no amounts of alcohol or hours of counseling will be able to purge that from Joe’s memory banks.

Although one could argue — for how many years now? — the Bucs pass rush is a question mark, Rotoworld.com NFL guru Evan Silva believes free agent pickup Darrelle “Robin” Revis is such a good cornerback (when healthy), he will even help the Bucs’ pass defense. Silva explained while fielding NFL questions last night from his Twitter followers.

@dustinbuescher: Think Bucs have legit playoff shot? Does Revis make secondary that much better?

@evansilva: Yes x 2. He makes pass rush better.

Now this is something the co-host of “Movin’ the Chains,” Tim Ryan, heard exclusively on SiriusXM NFL Radio, told Joe this spring. Ryan said Bucs cornerbacks were so miserable, and wide receivers were so open at the snap of the ball just coming off the line of scrimmage, that opposing quarterbacks were able to get the ball off quickly, making it all but impossible for Bucs’ defensive linemen to even breathe on a quarterback.

Ryan’s theory, and Silva’s as well, is that Revis (and likely, Johnthan Banks) will be able to cover receivers coming off the line right away, which will at least give Bucs’ pass rushers a prayer of disrupting quarterbacks, or making them eat dirt.

No duh! I and many of my esteemed Buc fans have been saying this to everybody who is hung up on the quality of our pass rushers. Last year, if you go back and watch tapes you will see that most of the time we were a mere nano second away from getting the sacks. It was pretty hard to defend against a QB taking a 3 step drop and release. This new secondary should give us at least that extra nano second now.

  2. Buc'n Junkie Says:

I’ll say it again, I predict a total of 50+ sacks this year as long as Revis and the rest of the secondary starters stay healthy all season.

  3. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

This is why I wish training camp started three weeks earlier and they’d make the regular season longer. I’m getting tired of all the talk. I want to see the action on the field at this point.

Am I alone in this? Or is it common to most football fans this time of year?

  4. SeanyMac in SC Says:

BB, the season can’t come soon enough. I’d like to see only two pre-season games and add two games to the regular season.

  5. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    @SeanyMac
The only problem with that is we fans don’t really get to see more games. I can understand trimming down the preseason by a game or two, but what I really want is a longer season.

Plus, preseason is important to the guys coming out of college. Personally I think the NFL should make all preseason games free to attend. They are not worth full price and it might improve attendance in the long run.

But I’m greedy. I want MORE football. Add 2 games to the season and add a bi-week. expand the playoffs by one round.

And off topic…I think the Probowl should be based on stats, not votes. At least then people would deserve to be there in all instances and it would have more meaning.

I can remember many times when we got right in the QBs face and they still completed their passes. When the reciever is wide open that will happen. Finally, we have some coverage and those throws run the risk of interceptions. So….we have a sack, a throw away, a defended pass or an interception or completion…..four out of five ain’t bad.
Don’t forget we still have Myron in development!!!

  7. Mike J Says:

Most importantly, the Bucs’ brass has subscribed to this theory totally. It makes sense, but the proof is in the proverbial puddin’.

  8. Illuminati Says:

We haven’t had a dominant pass rush for a very long time. 50 sacks this season would be tremendous, considering we haven’t even cracked the 30-sack mark in any of the past five seasons.

Last time we had 30 or more sacks for the season: 2007, 33
Last time we had 40 or more sacks for the season: 2004, 45
Last time we had 50 or more sacks for the season: 2000, 55

Geez! Get over it and quit with your favorite big word. Yes the defense was bad. New Orleans has never been known for a stout defense and still wins. Freeman’s inability to manage the clock was just as much an issue. I have no idea why no one will ever look at the last series of the Philly game and his “heinous” clock management. Winners find a way to win.

Never fails an article about pass defense and Freeman gets thrown in. How did the Saints do last year with a bad defense?? OK?

Lets see how your buy here pay here Revis does….

  12. Capt. Tim Says:

Our secondary was do pathetic, there was no way to pressure the QB. The WRs were open from first step to last step. It was nauseating

Darrelle Revis will improve every aspect of our defense- especially the Pass Rush. He’s the best CB in the league( you wish, Richard Sherman!). He’s also, IMO, the best defender in the league.

Soon, Banks will be a great CB also. Then, this team will have a great defense

  13. scubog Says:

Absolutely amazing that someone blames the Eagles loss on Freeman. As I recall, when he sat down with little time remaining the defense allowed a rookie QB to drive down the field and score. Oh, I know, Freeman should have scored more points earlier. I guess same could be said of Brad Johnson when the defense and special teams allowed Manning to overcome a 35-14 deficit in 4 minutes. An article about Revis turns into another Freeman bashing. Unbelievable.

  14. Capt. Tim Says:

Scubog- it’s not that surprising. Freeman is the only player some if these simpletons can recognize. And we have some of the the most uneducated football “fans” posting here, that I have seen in my many travels.

It’s the reaction of the unwashed masses! They give the QB too much credit when we win, and too much blame when we lose.

As Vince Lombardi said” it’s a game of Blocking and Tackling. Nothing more”

My opinion- you have a great O-line, and great defense- then any NFL QB will win with them. Without those two, any NFL QB will lose.

QB is highly overrated, and O-line is underrated.

Bob Bostat gives me the most reason for Hope.

  15. Joe Tucker Says:

Not to mention I will help the pass offense as well. Freeman can finally play ab without constantly playing from behind. Therefore making far less mistakes! (In theory ofcourse)
