Freeman Team & League Status “Disappointing”

June 30th, 2013

Tampa Bay Times columnist and WDAE-AM 620 Sports Page co-host Tom Jones finds it very troublesome for the Bucs that Josh Freeman was not named to the NFL Network annual Top-100 list of current players, as voted by NFL players themselves.

Jones said over the WDAE airwaves Friday that it’s “disappointing” Freeman isn’t among the top tier of players on his team or among the upper third or so of quarterbacks in the NFL. Co-host Rick Stroud thinks Jones is out of line, as you’ll hear in the heated discussion below.

Joe, however, largely agrees with Jones for a simple reason that was not mentioned on the radio: Freeman was voted the 83rd best player in the NFL after the 2010 season. That means Freeman’s peers acknowledge his regression since leading the Bucs to a 10-6 record and only tossing six picks in 2010. Whether you’re a Freeman lover or not, that’s “disappointing.” (You can catch the entire Sports Page audio below.)

There is nothing to disagree with here. You nailed it Joe, its disappointing any way you look at it. I’m sure some will come up with excuses and needlessly interject the defense here.

  2. fridgebob Says:

This is Freeman’s year. He gets to leave it all on the field. Then we’ll talk.

  3. Buc'n Junkie Says:

We couldn’t get through one Sunday without some kind of Freeman bashing. Let it go Joe. We all know secretly you can’t stand Freeman, you just won’t take a complete stand and admit it. This ranking was based on last years performance, it has no bearing on this year. Yeah, Drew Brees makes it on name alone. Same with Eli. same with Matty Ice. Just like Freeman last year, they all threw four interceptions in one game but nobody remembers that. Josh had two really bad stinkers where he threw most of his interceptions for the year and it’s all everyone can remember. In fact Brees and Ryan threw 5 ints in a game last year.

  4. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Anyone with a bit of intelligence and honesty knows the reasons for Freeman’s regression. While the haters refuse to admit it and mock people for pointing out the obvious it really was the defense that put Freeman into the position of feeling he needed to take unneccesary risks. The defense gave up leads time after time.

Regardless, Josh Freeman is also responsible as well. Truth is he could have focussed more on his own stats and taken the losses in order to keep his percentages high. He would have come out looking better certainly.

But he didn’t do that. He cared more about getting a win. Unfortunately, things went badly. There were routes run wrong. Lots of drops. His frustration built and he got flustered. He started screwing up.

That’s the truth of it. The entire team was responsible as well as the defense and Freeman.

We did see what Freeman is capable of in the early part of the season when he doesn’t feel like he has to do it all. And before the “elite quarterbacks handle the pressure” comments, elite quarterbacks are older in most cases, more matured. That will come after he learns to trust his fellow players.

  5. Buc1987 Says:

blah blah blah…….did I forget to mention blah?

  6. Pete 422 Says:

I’ve always had a “so what” type of attitude toward that list. It looks like Drew Brees may have a similar outlook. I saw an interview with him in NFL Network & he said that he didn’t vote & doesn’t know anybody who did.

Just seems like a manufactured way for the network to fill air time.

Ok, I know us fans say this every year, we will be great, we will be better, and so on, I understand, it’s just fan wishes, I get it, but, I know one thing, by halfway of this coming season, all this pronosticators, even you Joe, will be praising the Bucks and Freeman, I am nobody, therefore; for all of you guys, my voice don’t count, I get it, but mark my words, the Bucs and Freeman will be so great, all these know-it-alls and you will think twice next year before pronosticating anything for any team. By God, you all will be remembering my words. This will be the year the Buccaneers will come back to greatness and for years to come, yes I said it. Oh, you guys will remember me, oh and please it’s not about me, it’s about the Buccaneers, and specially to all of you who call yourselves fans!!

Says a lot about what the League thinks he has to prove..

Most likely they aren’t going to acknowledge Free till he shows them some “consistency” not only within a 16 game span stretch but from year to year.

  9. Stanglassman Says:

Most of the consistent QBs in the league are in the same system for more than a year or two lets see what he can do now that he finally has some consistency around him. Most people think Free is the worst QB in our division but if I were drafting a team starting today out of this division he would be the 2nd QB on my list. Drew B. only has a year or two left and I like free over Cam, maybe not as a athlete but as a QB.

    Freeman – “Disappointing”
    YEP!

  12. chris Says:

2 time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning wasn’t on this list. I’d still take him over the 3 rookies and Kap. Here is where I rate Freeman.

    1. Aaron Rodgers
    2. Peyton Manning
    3. Tom Brady
    4. Drew Brees
    5. Ben Roethlisbuerger
    6. Eli Manning
    7. Joe Flacco
    8. Matt Ryan
    9. Phillip Rivers
    10. Tony Romo
    11. Andrew Luck
    12. Russell Wilson
    13. RG III
    14. Matt Schaub
    15. Jay Cutler
    16. Josh Freeman
    17. Matt Stafford

I wouldn’t ever put Matt Stafford in front of Josh Freeman except for last year. Stafford is extremely overrated. He locked on to Megatron 90% of the time. His numbers wouldn’t be any good without Calvin.

I’m hard on Josh Freeman. But we’ve seen great from him. However we’ve seen bad. If he can find the balance, he’s going to take us places. He needs to show more poise in the pocket on a consistent basis. I compare Josh to Warren Moon.

  13. Adam L Says:

He’s not that good. He wasn’t the reliable. I’m not surprised and I would call in to question the credibility of the list had Freeman appeared on it.

  14. Biff Barker Says:

    @ Bonzai
Too bad you can’t delete that last post. It’s crap,
Freeman simply didn’t deserve the rating and yet you are preaching honesty and intelligence?
Need to take your head out of Alstptts’s locker!

  15. buccanay Says:

“Freeman lovers” and “Freeman haters” …what a cess pool this has become!

  16. PRBucFan Says:

Apparently not the league view jajaja 😉

  17. Pete 422 Says:

Remember Drew Brees spent 5 years in San Diego & was labeled a disappointment. Experience & and an offense the QB is comfortable with is the key.

  18. Architek Says:

Pete no comparison between Freeman to Brees in any scenario. He’s not listed because simply he’s not good. Simple as that!

  19. Sneedy16 Says:

    @buccanay

It’s gotten to the point where I’m just waiting on the season to start already. The commenting on Josh pops up even when Josh isn’t mentioned in an article. After the midway through the season is where I will make my evaluation. It should be obvious by then if Josh sucks or not.

  20. PRBucFan Says:

No he wasn’t labeled a disappointment, not to many people.
The Chargers just made a boneheaded move.

  21. PRBucFan Says:

    A controversial one at that

  22. grif4foozball Says:

@buc n junkie, none of these qbs. u mentioned make it on name alone,LOl,they all made a name for themselves in this league based on their style of playing like winners and not mediocre, inconsistent headcases like Josh has shown half the time, now being a bucs fan true and blue I am routing for Josh but it is this year or bust reguardless of any sandbagging numbers he puts up.

  23. Buc'n Junkie Says:

that’s fair grif. Freeman needs to help his own cause. agreed!

  24. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

    Biff Barker Says:
“Need to take your head out of Alstotts’s locker!”

Just because you remember that and are the only one to recognise me…I’m going to give you a pass on the other comments…assuming you are referring to what I think you are and that isn’t just a lucky comment.

I don’t actually mind if people disagree with me though. It’s expected in these environments.

  25. Buc'n Junkie Says:

“I don’t actually mind if people disagree with me though. It’s expected in these environments.”

I have yet to find one person who I totally agree with on every subject. But there are a few of you out there that are reasonably on the same wavelength as I. lol

  26. Mean D Says:

How can this surprise anyone? Freeman is not that good.

  27. Buc1987 Says:

Oh lord why do I bother clicking on the comments button when it’s a story about Josh? We’ll all see soon enough. Joe it really is a waste of site space to continually post this stuff, but I guess you have to. I trust Freeman more than I trust these experts. I think he’s going to deliver the goods this year. Time will tell.

  28. scubog Says:

Well said Buccanay and Buc1987: And that’s without they typical 7th grade comment from Robert and Realist to add to the foray. I agree, I think Joe does these daily Freeman articles on purpose. Heck, Robert and Realist might even be on Joe’s staff.

  29. BuccaneerBonzai Says:

Joe pretty much puts up all news having to do with the Bucs. News we sometimes don’t see ourselves. That is, afterall, what this website is for. At least Joe expresses a level of knowledge. Unlike certain other media bloggers out there.

  30. Buc1987 Says:

@Bonzai…yes I understand that Joe puts up all Buc related news and I appreciate (almost)every bit of it. This is the best site on the net for Buc news. I would pretty much whine like a lil girl if Joe ended this site. So then I’ll blame the media. Sorry about that Joe. I guess Freeman is all the media wants to talk about these days.
Definition: redundant= no longer needed or useful= every Buc fan knows and gets it already.

  31. Tomcin Says:

Let me just say Tom Jones is an IDIOT. I don’t read anything he writes since he doesn’t really have anything to say.
