Mark Dominik “Excited” About Penn’s Work

May 30th, 2013

After Fatgate exploded over the holiday weekend, when a report surfaced suggesting Bucs Pro Bowl left tackle Donald Penn may not be around One Buc Palace after 2013 because he’s too fat, none other than Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik weighed in (pun intended) on Fatgate after the Bucs OTA practice Wednesday.

In short, Dominik is happy with Penn and believes a playoff berth may just get Penn to eat pineapple again (and maybe loads of pork at a Hawaiian luau.)

Remember Dominik haters, it was Dominik, as the Bucs pro player personnel director, who targeted Penn off waivers when the Vikings cleaned their plate of him.

“I have been with Donald since he has been here as a member of the organization and I am very excited about what he has done in the offseason and what he has done in terms of his conditioning,” Dominik said. “Looking forward to a great season from him.

“I am sure [the inaccurate report about his weight] is disappointing to Donald. All I can tell you is what he had done and what he is doing is right on par with what [we] had hoped. I think everything else has been exaggerated.

“I thought [Penn had] a pretty good season. We were 7-9 as a team so it wasn’t enough, right? I am sure we are all looking to get this team back in the playoffs.”

This should put to rest all the chewing of the fat about Fatgate and the possibility that Donald Penn will eat himself out of a job.

As Joe has stated before, if Penn is not on the Bucs roster in 2014, it will be because of the size of his contract, not the size of his belly.

    I like it Joe. I like it a lot.

    Off the subject but just read that the Cowboys draft board was leaked & they had Jonathan Banks going in the 6th round…..are they nuts?

    Great point Joe! when the Bucs don’t make the playoffs for the 5th straight row of the Pop-stars career as Gm, Maybe the Glazers will just demote him, instead of firing him. Just cause someone is bad at something and good at 1 thing does not mean we should begone with him.

    @tampabaybucfan:
    …and they resigned Tony Romo to a $100MM contract. Not to bright are they? …

    “when the Bucs don’t make the playoffs for the 5th straight row”

    I thought you were a “realist” and not a “pessimist”? Predicting a playoff-less season sure sounds an awful lot like a pessimist to me…

  6. WestCoastBucsFan Says:

    “Realist”ically speaking, the Bucs were 7-9 in 2012. “Realist”ically, there problems were mostly with a historically bad defense. “Realist”ically, they added a Pro Bowler and an All-pro to the secondary. “Realist”ically, they are improved as a team and “realist”ically there win total should go up. “Realist”ically more wins means a higher likelihood of playoffs.

    Realism and pessimism are very different. Calling yourself a “realist” doesn’t make you one. When most analysts are predicting a winning season then it seems to be the opposite of “realist”ic to be predicting a losing season. Perhaps an analyst that doesn’t have a blind hatred for certain GM can be a little more unbiased when it comes to “realist”ically predicting the Bucs upcoming season?

    @Joe

    Mark Dominik was instrumental in discovering countless NFL Europe prospects including Shelton Quarles.

    I laid the story to rest after reading the first post.

    So Dominik gets credit for Donald Penn though he wasn’t even the GM at the time, but he isn’t responsible for trading up into the first round to reach for Josh Freeman when he was the GM?

    And let us not forget the alleged “rock star” basically called Penn a fat ass who couldn’t lay off the Ding Dongs and Doritos while speaking to some fans a few years back. But I spose that was just Dom being crafty.

    And if they make it 2 games into the playoffs? Will you change your tune?

    Penn has been a Godsend, one of the most important positions in football and we don’t have to worry about it. That’s very very fortunate for us.

    Yes, unless you are calling Dom and Raheem both liars? These aren’t things someone made up. These are statements made Dom and Raheem themselves.

    No problem. Takes a few minutes to update though. It’s not instant.

    If anyone needs a weight clause in their contract it’s Shaun King. I still can’t believe that’s him every time I see him on those NBC videos. What the heck happened there? Dude, you were a quarterback! Hop on a treadmill once in a while…

    lol Mark cook looks like a moron….again…pewter report sucks

  20. Joe Says:

    So lightningbuc, if you were Mark Dominik you would have ignored Raheem (who was the only NFL guy to work with Josh) and traded up to draft Curtis Painter?

  21. PRBucFan Says:

    @Joe

    Heller, just wondering about how long I will need to wait in order to have my new email moderated. 🙂

    Gracias

    All GM’s have successes and failures on their tally sheet. Discovering Donald Penn certainly is on the plus side for a young Mark Dominik when he was evaluating players. There have been some on the failure side as well; but drafting (not reaching for) Josh Freeman was not one of them. He’s been a starter since late in his rookie season and other than 3 to 4 games last season, played as well as any QB who has taken a snap here. While he may not be one of the elite handful of QB’s, he is no Ryan Leaf or even his draftmate Mark Sanchez. It’s as if some of you critics seek to validate your own mistaken first opinion. My guess is you didn’t like the choice of Josh Freeman and may have preferred DT Peria Jerry and go with Luke McCown under center. As Dr. Phil would say, “How’d that have worked out?”

  23. Biff Barker Says:

    Good on Dom and Schiano both for setting the record straight on Penn. Stand by, or in Donald’s case, around your man.
    Also, some of you cats need to seek some happy meds or enroll in the nearest anger management class.
