Bucs (?) Wide Receiver Steve Smith Retires

May 29th, 2013

Quick, name your favorite Steve Smith moment. You know, Bucs wide receiver, former Pro Bowl player. What’s that you say? You don’t remember Steve Smith making a play? Joe doesn’t either.

One of Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik’s free agent pick ups this year, Smith, has decided to retire, the Bucs announced this afternoon.

Even in watching two OTA practices, Joe doesn’t remember Smith sticking out outside of a dropped pass. Apparently, per the Bucs, the decision was his and his alone.

@TBBuccaneers: WR Steve Smith, who signed with the Bucs in April, has announced that he will retire from the NFL after 6 seasons. … Steve Smith’s 6 NFL years included a Super Bowl championship w/NY & a 107-catch season that set a Giants record.

Smith didn’t seem to figure into the Bucs’ plans and was looked upon more as a potential reserve who already knew Mike Sullivan’s offense, a derivative of the Giants’ offense.

Kevin Olgetree, also a free agent pickup at wide receiver, who logged a good practice this morning, just got handed a little more job security. Unexpectedly of course.

LOL this Pop-star really knows how to fill a roster…..He probably got sick of all the bad ducks that JFro throws and went home.

  2. Anthony Gironda Says:

First, Nate Kaeding. Now, Steve Smith

  3. PRBucFan Says:

Steve was just a camp body, IMO he wasn’t going to beat out Ogletree.

Best of luck to SS, but we only want those that want and have that fire to be a part of this new era of Tampa Bay Buccaneers 🙂

  4. Eric Says:

Another guy declining to participate in the pending super bowl run.

  5. PRBucFan Says:

Let me take back “camp body” he may have made the depth chart, just behind Ogletree IMO lol

What a terrible GM. A free agent WR competing for second string retires on him? This ship is going down!

Give me a break. How pathetic can you be to take every shot you can in every unrelated story.

Was your tirade aimed at the_buc_realist? Hope so. ..anyway Chris Owusu has to feel a little better too now. 🙂

@the_buc_pessimist: Personally, I’m completely against taking prescription drugs, but in your case it sure seems warranted. Your obsessive tunnel-vision is sad. You obviously hate your life, so please get some help. We have more than enough dumb, angry citizens to go around.

wasnt he the guy who made that helmet catch in the super bowl? if he is then Id say thats pretty memorable.

anywho, that was quick stint. not much of a loss really.

  10. JonBuc Says:

    Tyree # helmetcatch

  11. Andrew 1 Says:

oh thats right, it was David Tyree. thanks for the correction. so I guess Joe was right on this one, he did nothing worth remembering.

One big year and not much else. Amazing how some guys fizzle out, u would think if they could do it once they could do it again.

Maybe one DB finds a weakness and the rest see it on film?

    Lack of motivation?

    Injuries?

We had a blocking icon like that. Great rookie season then nuttin. Hope no one was eating when I mentioned him….

I agree with West Coast. Besides, I’m sure Raheem Morris pressured the alleged “rock star” into signing Smith.

    Yes.

    @Eric,

It was knee injuries. Hurt his knee after signing a big contract in NY. Never could get right after that.

I wish that other Steve Smith (the real one) would retire.

I am still not sure why they have not looked into or at least spoke to Brando Lloyd. He still had a great year last season in what some people would call a down year. I understand trying to bring in some depth at wr with smith and ogletree for cheap and hope it works out. I think ogletree defiantly has an upside but Lloyd, can be had a discount price and he is proven and would defiantly be a threat and great addition to the offense, especially given they do not have a legitimate TE threat. Freeman, would have plenty of places to go with the ball and Lloyd is use to sharing the ball they spread the ball around for sure in NE. Hopefully they have looked into it.

I think this is a very narrow-minded view. You seem to focus on immediate assumptions without delving into reasons. My brother-in-law is the same way. Drives me crazy.

Dominick likely knew there was a chance Smith would retire. But on the off chance he did not do so, he was worth getting the rights to…just in case.

Or, it could be that Smith came into OTAs and felt the heat, saw how hard he would have to work, and decided he wasn’t up to it if he could not be a starter. He wouldn’t be the first player to do so.

Regardless, signing him was a no-risk move. It cost the team nothing but a temporary roster spot, which is now freed up.
