Depth At Offensive Line

Could the Bucs be looking to add depth to the offensive line, in addition to Jamon Meredith?
Joe knows there are some Bucs fans concerned about the offensive line. Not Joe. If healthy, there are few better offensive lines in the NFL.
That’s not to say the Bucs offensive line is the same as the Packers’ of the 1960s, the Raiders’ of the 1970s or the Hogs of the 1990s. Demar Dotson is a borderline NFL starter — a pretty good pass blocker but not the best run blocker, for example.
This led a Bucs fan to inquire of Woody Cummings of the Tampa Tribune what the Bucs plan to do about the offensive line in a recent TBO Bucs Q&A.
Q. One thing that concerns me is the offensive line, particularly depth. Who are the best options on the market in that area, and do you see Tampa signing one of those guys?
– Mike, Fitchburg
A. There are several good options. G Brandon Moore is still available. So are OTs Eric Winston and Jammal Brown. The Bucs will probably wait to see how the undrafted free agents they signed look, but there’s a chance they’ll dip back in to the market for someone.
– Woody Cummings
Joe has a hunch the reason why Winston and Brown are still out there is their asking price. The closer it gets to training camp, their prices may lower.
But Joe doesn’t believe Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik is going to throw much money at a right tackle. A backup maybe? Perhaps.
Who knows, maybe the Bucs found a hidden gem this weekend.

The “if healthy” part is what should conern us. Every year, injuries take the Bucs out of competing. EVERY YEAR.

The Bucs have James M, Ted L, and Wynn. 2 of them filled in nicely last year and Wynn his the ability. Hopefully they don’t need any of them this season.

You feel good about Meredith or Mike Remmers at tackle if one injury happens?

Yeah, adding Eric Winston or Jammal Brown on the right side would virtually allow the Bucs to pretty much run the ball at will.

So you are comfortable with Jamon Meredith (who struggled in space at guard) or Mike Remmers (rookie free agent in 2012) as a starter if the Bucs lose either tackle?

I think it is an area of concern. But Dom is on top of it, I guess. I suspect a vet will be added later. A couple of good ones still left.

I was born in 86 so correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the “Hogs” were dominating in the ’80s?
I surely wouldn’t mind picking up Winston. However, it is concerning that he has been cut by 2 teams in two years.
I think Dominik waits until training camps start to see who gets cut or placed on practice squads. Who knows maybe even one of our undrafted rookies makes team.

Dotson has only been in the league a couple seasons. You don’t think he can become the run mauler that Trueblood was?
Maybe the blocking icon Michael Clayton will bulk up and come back to us.

The problem is the offensive line weakened as the year went on last year, with those players. They were actually part of the reason for the problems Freeman had…part of the reason. Quality depth on the lines is very important.

Meredith is a mediocre starter, but a rock solid back up. I was hoping Bucs would pick up Barrett Jones to add another such versatile guy for depth, especially when he could have been had in the 4th.
