Play For Spence Cost A Sixth-Round Pick

April 27th, 2013

TCDominik11If you’re wondering how the Bucs landed Illinois defensive tackle Akeem Spence so early this afternoon in the fourth round of the NFL Draft, it’s because the Bucs traded up with the Raiders.

Rockstar general manager Mark Dominik gave up the Bucs’ slotted fourth-round pick and one of the Bucs’ two sixth-round picks (No. 181 overall) in order to move up 12 spots in the fourth round.

The Bucs still have another fourth-round pick, the one they fleeced from the Patriots in the Aqib Talib trade.

    still have a pick in the 6th so its a good move if he wouldve been gone by then

  2. 4everBucsFan Says:

    I agree with Macabee, the pick was ok but the trade up baffles me. I don’t think there was any danger to wait another 11 picks. We unneccsesarily gave up a 6th rd. pick for no reason.

  3. Oldguy Says:

    Too late now but I also think we didn’t need to lose that pick.

  4. BigSombrero Says:

    It was our 2nd 6th round pick to move up and get a quality player with a ton of upside. Well worth it.

  5. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Stop complaining. No one here has access to other teams’ boards and saying he’d still be available 11 picks later makes you sound ignorant. You’re not Nostradamus or some biblical prophet. You have no clue how other teams had him ranked.

    Giving up a sixth rounder, who would never have started anyway, to move up and grab a high value DT in the fourth round with starter potential, is well worth it. That’s why you guys are making lower middle class incomes at some boring job and why Dominik & Schiano are playing in the big leagues with multi-million dollar salaries.

    We have to trust Dom…..he must really like Spence and didn’t want to take the chance. Would rather have a sure thing than a late 6th rounder. Benefit of the doubt goes to Coach & Dom.

  7. Joc Says:

    This is doms worst draft and that is saying alot.

  8. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Back to the draft, I wouldn’t be surprised if the next pick is William Gholston, David Quessenberry, Ryan Swope, Johnathan Franklin, Da’Rick Rogers, Chris Gragg or Malliciah Goodman.

    Or maybe a flier on Marcus Lattimore for a 2014 return? Maybe? We’ll see.

    @Joe

    Maybe it saves the checkbook for the Glazer Family?

  10. Bucs Fan #238 Says:

    Would anyone be mad at a Jesse Williams pick?

  11. Oldguy Says:

    No complaints. I like the pick. Next one could be a RB. The coach doesn’t seem to have much faith in Blount.

    Well, I guess that tells us which of the “Dominic must go” debate you’re on!

  13. Fritz50 Says:

    which SIDE of the debate.
    Dohhh Bart !!!

    @238

    Jesse Williams has zero pass rush ability so I’m not sure the Bucs want another guy like that. He’s more of a zero-tech NT in a 3-4 defense. The Bucs are after more guys like Akeem Spence who are very quick and strong and can shoot the gap when one-on-one and also hold ground against doubles. Williams can hold his ground but he can’t get into the backfield at all.

  15. PRBucFan Says:

    They got their version of a better “upgraded Roy Miller” in this guy.

    If that indeed ends up being the case than great job.

    I however have been eager to land the LB Greene

  16. BullDog Says:

    Just watched 20 minutes of highlights. Got tired of waiting for one. Seems like everyone in the war room had blinders on for anyone who wasn’t a CB. Go Bucs !

  17. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    Ahahahahah! Nailed it baby. Been banging the table for Gholston for days now. Yes!

  18. BullDog Says:

    Agree flyboy,,,he’s has freak ability just needs someone to teach him how to use them a tad more efficiently. And for the record , I like the job Dom’s doing. I can disagree with some of the choices and it NOT be a kill Dom post. Just my take from an old D lineman. Of course I’m going to be D line biased. lol GO BUCS!

  19. FLBoyInDallas Says:

    @BullDog

    Yep, totally agree. The Bucs coaches will get the best out of him and that freakish athletic ability for such a big player. Our d-line starters and depth are now very well-rounded with Spence and Gholston. Very happy with this draft.

    Joc as much as I love Freeman Dom Plugged holes and this Draft is not Flashy it’s extremely Solid. Time never lies you will look back and see it soon enough

    As my “Glennon Hangover” clears im actually starting to sorta be okay with this draft, I Love the Banks pick and yo hear him say the Buccaneers have been hia number one choice only put.me over the top.

    I need more info to feel more settled on the Spence pick hoeever they must have really felt confident, but Gholston has some potential and I love the eay he uses his arms similar to J J Watt
